It is well known that clays affect the flotation performance, and many of the refractory gold ores around the world contain clay minerals. Therefore, an ore sample from the Carlin Trend was selected for this study as these ores contain large quantities of clays. The presence of clay minerals in an ore makes it susceptible to a range of variables, such as the solution chemistry determined by pH and the chemistry of the rheology modifiers. The viscosity of the ore slurry was measured as a function of solid concentration and particle size distribution, in addition to using different rheology modifiers and pH regulators. The results were correlated with the ore flotation performance. It was found that various reagents known commonly as dispersants or rheology modifiers have different effects on the ore slurry viscosity. This study revealed that the gold flotation recovery can be improved by changing the pulp rheology.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S, Bradshaw, D and Dunne, R, 2013. Os aços carbono são materiais metálicos muito importantes na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica. Parafusos, hastes, eixos, pistões, engrenagens são fabricados a partir desse tipo de aço, mais especificamente do aço SAE1040. O objetivo desse trabalho foi de avaliar a influência da presença de 0,2% em massa de cromo nas propriedades mecânicas e metalúrgicas de um aço com 0,4% em massa de carbono. A liga padrão SAE1040 e esta liga modificada com cromo foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de normalização, recozimento, têmpera e revenimento, e comparadas às durezas e microdurezas das diferentes amostras entre si. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram que a adição de cromo é um método eficiente quando se deseja aumentar a resistência de um material. Observou-se que os valores de dureza e microdureza para o aço com a adição de cromo apresentaram-se maiores em relação ao aço padrão, como consequência das microestruturas obtidas, principalmente após têmpera e revenimento. A adição de 0,2% em massa de cromo no aço carbono influiu na melhora das propriedades mecânicas do aço tornando-o mais interessante na fabricação de peças para a indústria metal-mecânica.

The technically troubled new LANDSAT-4/Thematic Mapper (TM) land observational satellite remote sensing system has provided dramatically new and important short wave infrared (SWIR) data, which combined with Landsat's Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) visible (VIS), very near infrared (VNIR), and thermal infrared (TI) data will greatly improve regional geological mapping on a global scale. The TM will significantly improve clay, iron oxide, bauxite, and nickel laterite mapping capabilities over large areas of the world. It will also improve the ability to discriminate vegetation stress and species distribution associated with lateritic environments. Examples of the application of remote sensing for nickeliferous and aluminous laterites are illustrated. Nickel laterites on Gag Island, Indonesia are defined by MSS imagery. Satellite imagery of the Weipa, Cape Bougainville, and the Darling Range, Australia bauxite deposits show the potential use of MSS data for exploration and mining applications. Examples of satellite and airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for Jamaica and West Kalimantan, Indonesia document the use of this method for bauxite exploration. Thematic Mapper data will be combined with the French SPOT satellite's high spatial resolution and stereoscopic digital data, and U.S., Japanese, European, and Canadian Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to assist with logistics, mine development, and environmental concerns associated with bauxite and other lateritic deposits worldwide.

"This two-part paper summarizes the design and implementation of a distributed PIbased control strategy installed at the B grinding circuit, at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. Part I details the design of the control strategy using a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG). The first step consisted of sampling campaigns and data processing to calibrate DYNAFRAG. Then, several control alternatives were designed and tested with the simulator. The main feature of these strategies is their ability to regulate or keep within an upper and lower limit five output variables (circulating load, rod mill density, cyclone feed and overflow densities and pump box level) with only three manipulated variables (rod mill water, pump box water and rod mill tonnage). By simulation on DYNAFRAG, it was possible to discriminate among several control structures. The preferred control strategy uses a saturation algorithm, which allows the adequate regulation of two measured variables with only one actuator. Controllers located in interacting loops are appropriately tuned, taking into account the existing process coupling. Part II will present the implementation of the selected control strategy.IntroductionSteady state simulators are used to predict the stationary state of a given process under specific operating conditions. Tradi - tionally, steady state simulation has been applied for process flowsheet design, for evaluating process modification benefits or for determining key operating parameters in process operation optimization. Dynamic simulators add a new dimension to process simulation since they allow the prediction of the process transient behaviour, resulting from the application of a different set of operating conditions and/or from natural disturbances or equipment failure. Dynamic simulators can also be used for the training of new operators or for the design of control strategies."

This paper presents a computer program package for predicting surface movement and deformation caused by under-ground coal extractions. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

"It was developed in this work a computational tool to aid in anomaly detection present in the operation of ball mills. The tool uses a torque estimator that is based on measurements taken exclusively in the drive motor. The ball mill equipment widely used in the mining industry has, inherent to its principle of operation, high energy consumption and low efficiency. These characteristics are accentuated when the mill operates outside the ideal conditions of velocity and loading. Direct measurement of these variables is extremely difficult because it requires the installation of sensors in moving parts of the mill. Thus, systems that can help monitoring the operating conditions and predict anomalies are useful because they contribute to improving the performance of the process, help to reduce the energetic consumption, wear on the mill surface and frequency of maintenance shutdowns. The detection strategy implemented in this work is based on the fact that operational anomalies such as an inadequate percentage of balls and incorrect angular velocity manifest itself as a change in spectral components of the torque signal in the mill driven by an electric motor. The mill torque was estimated by processing motor variables measured by sensors commonly used for control purpose and installed exclusively in the motor. The mill was operated at various fault operating conditions and signals from electric motor and vibration on the mill shaft were measured. The spectral components present in the estimated torque signal were then compared with signals from a vibration sensor in order to establishing a correlation with anomalous operation condition of the mill. The experimental results showed that the signals obtained has an excellent correlation with other variables obtained by direct measurement and have potential to be used to construct a system for automatic fault detection in the operation of ball mills."

A laboratory-scale investigation of the effect of milling operation and catalyst addition ( K2CO3) on the partial reduction of low-grade pyrolusite ore pellets was carried out using coke as a reductant. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to understand the correlation between milling and catalyst addition parameters with the reduction temperatures. DTG analysis of pyrolusite pellet reduction showed three distinctive peaks associated with a three-step reduction mechanism (i.e., MnO2→ Mn2O3→Mn3O4→MnO). The results showed that the grinding and addition of the catalyst have a significant effect on lowering the MnO2 reduction temperature independently. But maximum reduction temperature drop is obtained when combining grinding and catalyst addition in this work. By 3 h milling and 10 wt% catalyst addition, the reduction temperatures were reduced by more than 200 °C compared to the raw ore pellets. These results obtained from the DTG analysis were further supported by XRD analysis of the reduced samples.

Marine design and construction methods are presented on the caisson foundations for the tower piers at the Brooklyn, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial 1st, Tappan Zee, Walt Whitman, Throgs Neck, Verrazano Narrows, Delaware Memorial 2nd, and Newport Bridges. All of the bridges are founded on caissons, bearing on bedrock, soil, or piling. Caissons at the Tappan Zee Bridge are partially supported by piling and partially by buoyant forces. General subsurface conditions for each are provided. The purpose of this paper is inform engineers how bridge foundations using caissons were built over major waterways in the Northeastern USA in the past, anticipating a surge of new bridge construction in the near future.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. High stress conditions in underground mines push the performance envelope of support systems to their limit. In weak rock masses these conditions lead to large deformation and breakdown of the rock material, while stress release events in hard rock mines can lead to sudden and usually violent rock and support failure. In typical support systems, a combination of different reinforcement and support mechanisms provide the required convergence control and retainment. These systems usually involve a multi-pass support installation. The advantages of a single pass support system are investigated and several bolting combinations are compared. Criteria for design are reviewed and new criteria are proposed to include cost and effectiveness in commonly used engineering approaches. Field observation and testing is used to illustrate the difference between the proposed approach and more conventional systems.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Normally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now being used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present picture will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time.

[Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar as correlações entre o IPM (Índice de Permeabilidade Magnética) das pelotas queimadas, as trincas formadas durante o processamento das pelotas no pelotamento/endurecimento e o FeO de cada amostra. As análises evidenciaram que o tipo de trinca presente na pelota impacta no IPM fazendo diminuir a correlação entre IPM e FeO. O entendimento do fenômeno possibilitou desenvolver uma metodologia para determinação de um parâmetro que pudesse ser correlacionado ao FeO das pelotas de minério de ferro, estendendo sua aplicação ao pellet feed, baseado nas propriedades magnéticas do material. O método consiste em medir a variação da indutância de um solenoide, provocada pela introdução do material que se deseja determinar o parâmetro no núcleo de uma bobina, determinando-se relativamente a permeabilidade magnética das pelotas e pellet feed. Para tal, foi definida uma metodologia nas quais alterações devidas à variação da densidade da amostra, causadas principalmente devido a trincas nas pelotas, sejam mitigadas, garantindo a repetibilidade dos resultados. Assim, foi possível a determinação do FeO das amostras através da medição deste novo parâmetro, de forma mais rápida, fácil e com um custo consideravelmente menor que na química analítica clássica.

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. Growing awareness of selenium bioaccumulation has resulted in selenium management becoming an important environmental issue for mining operations. Selen-IX™ is a novel ion exchange based technology developed by BioteQ to provide an effective solution for removing selenium oxyanions from mine impacted water to single-digit µg/L levels. The technology offers significant potential benefits when compared to incumbent biological treatment processes, including substantially reduced capital and operating costs and significantly reduced production of a selenium-containing sludge for final disposal. This paper reviews the key features of the Selen-IX™ process and presents the results of recent pilot testing on selenium impacted water.

"Abstract - The Owl Creek Mine is located near the west end of the Neo-archean Abitibi greenstone belt, 17 km northeast of Timmins, Ontario, and 4 km north of the Destor Porcupine fault. Gold occurs in epigenetic quartz veins and their pyritic wallrocks in two zones within a package of east striking, steeply north dipping, volcanic and sedimentary rocks. At the West Zone, 1 729 603 t of ore with a grade of 4.83 g/t Au (268 587 troy oz.) were produced from an open pit centered on a wedgeshaped unit of Tisdale Group basalt that occurs between two overturned, south facing units of Porcupine Group graywacke and argillite. Basalt/graywacke contacts are locally marked by graphiticcarbonaceous argillite, strike-parallel faults and massive quartz veins.Deformed quartz+/-ankerite veins occur along the graphitic sedimentary/volcanic contacts and in gently to moderately dipping fractures in basalts, and, to a lesser extent, in graywackes. Veins also occur sub-parallel to steeply dipping 070° foliation. Altered host basalts are composed of iron carbonate, sericite, quartz, carbon, chlorite and disseminated pyrite. Gold occurs as inclusions in pyrite, and less commonly as free gold in fractures and along graphite-quartz grain boundaries in quartz veins. Fractures preferentially developed in more competent basalts during pre- to syn-ore deformation are interpreted to have provided the permeability required for emplacement of mineralized quartz veins. Carbonaceous basalt/graywacke contacts further enhanced gold deposition by acting as chemical traps. The interaction of hydrothermal fluids with these carbonaceous sedimentary rocks led to the characteristic local darkening of host basalts due to carbon impregnation and chlorite development."

Esta conecta con áreas de trabajo situadas por debajo de las ya inundadas de modo que, para efectuar el desagüe, solo tendrá qµe perforarse en plano inclinado. Los túneles Graton tendrán poco más de 11 km, los cuales pueden perforarse desde accesos en el Valle del Río Rimac, poco más arriba del pueblo de San Mateo, en un punto denominado "Carbonyacúpalabra" quichua que significa «agua de carbón». Asimismo, estos túneles gemelos se terminarán bajo el pozo de la mina Aguas Calientes de Casapalca. Una vez terminado, una perforación servirá para desaguar las áreas de trabajo y la otra, para la respectiva ventilación.

Sophisticated control systems require sufficient and reliable information from the process to be controlled. At the Pyhasalmi concentrator two novel measurements, a particle size indicator (PSI) and a mill level monitor (MLM), have led to significant progress in the control of the grinding circuit. The PSI and the MLM measurements have brought additional information from the process. The PSI has been an absolute prerequisite for determining the overall grinding circuit efficiency and the design of the integrated grinding and flotation control system. The MLM measurement has enabled studies on the volumetric filling of a mill to be utilised for maximising the mill throughput. The paper describes the operation principles of the PSI and MLM devices and the additional process information received. The results of a metallurgical pre-control audit are discussed and finally the design of the integrated control system is outlined.
