The properties of iron ore sinter – commonly defined by measures of tumble strength, reduction degradation and reducibility – have a major impact on blast furnace performance. These properties are largely influenced by raw material properties, in particular the bulk ore composition. Despite this importance, there is a lack of quantitative data on the impact of ore chemical composition on iron ore sintering. This is surprising since the levels of Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, P, MgO and other elements, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore, play a major role in determining the abundance and type of high-temperature bonding phases that form during sintering. It is the abundance and nature of the high-temperature bonding phase(s) that directly influences sinter quality. This study combines in situ diffraction experiments in model sinter systems with laboratory-based compact sinter tests using natural ores to examine the links between iron ore composition and sintering temperature and their effects on standard metallurgical sinter quality test methods. Results help to establish the critical compositional and thermal parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry, which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter matrix. This information should enable operators to predict optimum sinter operating conditions based on the initial chemistry and mineralogy of the iron ore fines and recognise the chemical modifications to the original iron ore fines required to produce high-quality iron ore sinter.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, Webster, N A S, Manuel, J and Ware, N, 2015. "The froth ability, froth stability and the froth structure are strong influences in flotation process i.e. on water recovery, bubble size, entrainment of gangue particle, flotation rate constants, grade and recovery. The labscale flotation of rich apatite ore with a high mass pull leads to significant changes in pulp and froth properties over time. The froth stability decreases with increasing the flotation time. These changes can be related to different solid contents, reagent concentration, froth heights and bubble size distributions. This study presents the results from froth studies and discussions on the particle size of fully liberated silicates and degree of entrainment based on automated mineralogy size-by-size analysis. The change of entrainment in a rich apatite ore batch flotation with time will describe more precisely by measuring froth properties using a Dynamic Foam Analyzer. It is concluded that the degree of entrainment is not only dependent on particle size but also the pulp density due to its effect on particle settling and also froth properties in varying resistance to particle drainage. Furthermore, entrainment models are applied to predict the effect of size, flotation time on entrainmentINTRODUCTIONFroth flotation belongs to the group of heterocoagulation separation techniques. Froth flotation is classically divided into two active zones, the pulp zone (where particle collection occurs) and the froth zone. A schematics drawing of the interaction between both zones is plotted in Figure 18 (Yianatos and Contreras, 2010). In froth flotation, the collision probability in the collection zone is governed by the physics of the process or hydrodynamics (Wills and Finch, 2016). The true flotation event in the pulp occurs when the hydrophobic valuable mineral particles collide with bubbles and formation of a stable particle-bubble aggregates moving upwards against gravity to the froth phase (Yianatos et al., 2009)."

"A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

O Laminador Reversível a Frio 4-Hi de uma cadeira da CSN-PR não foi projetado para reduzir 100% da Bobina Quente Decapada (BQD), ficando sempre o trecho de miolo e capa fora da espessura de especificação. O descarte deste material é realizado na entrada da Linha de Galvanização Contínua (LGC) da CSN-PR, sendo o processo de descarte feito de forma manual baseado em critérios visuais, acarretando em diferentes resultados por turno de operação, assim como o descarte desnecessário de material bom como sucata na maioria dos casos. Este trabalho aborda o estudo e desenvolvimento de um projeto conduzido através da metodologia do Lean Seis Sigma, automatizando a decisão do descarte e atingindo à máxima utilização do material dentro da especificação de espessura, diminuindo assim o trecho fora de bitola descartado como sucata na entrada da LGC, o que afetava diretamente o indicador de Rendimento Metálico da linha.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. operates an ISASMELTTM furnace for the smelting of copper concentrate at the Miami Smelter in Claypool, Arizona. In May 2017, the furnace was restarted after incorporating newly designed copper cooling elements from just above the tap hole to the underside of the roof. The objective of the improved cooling design was to extend campaign life by eliminating existing failure mechanisms with the wall refractory. In addition to upgraded bathline coolers and complete coverage of the gas offtake transition, or ‘kettle’, with plate coolers, a novel arrangement of coolers was installed in the remaining freeboard area. The shell required significant cutting and re-stiffening, as well as extensive modification of the cooling water piping. Based on performance observed to date, it is expected that smelter throughput will be increased due to extended ISASMELTTM refractory campaign life.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. "Near-net-shape casting is an important area of research in the iron and steel industry today. Among the near-net-shape casting processes, the single-belt caster seems to be the most promising, since it is the only one that can achieve levels of productivity similar to those obtained with conventional continuous casting machines. One of the most important aspects in the single-belt casting is the feeding system used to deliver liquid metal over the belt. This system determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal and affects the quality of the strips. In the present work, a metal delivery system having a simple geometry was proposed. Using the CFD code CFX 5.6, a mathematical model to simulate three-dimensional turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer in that system has been developed. This model was used to analyze different configurations of the metal delivery system and the free surface shape of the fluid was also determined. A physical model of the feeding system was built and used to validate the predictions of the mathematical model. The fluid flow calculations have been validated by dye injection experiments and laser doppler anemometry. Measurements of the free surface levels have also been performed. These experiments provided supporting evidence for the predictions of the mathematical model.IntroductionTo maintain its competitiveness in the present market, the metallurgical sector, particularly the steelmaking companies, are developing new techniques of production. Some of these new processes are focussed on the strip casting technologies. Among these technologies, the SingleBelt process is considered the most interesting option, reducing the number of rolling steps and, consequently, the final cost of the product, especially the part associated to the energy consumption (fuel and/or electric energy). This process can also reach levels of productivity that can not be matched by other strip casting methods(1). One of the most important aspects concerning these new processes is related to the liquid metal delivery system. This system can have a significant effect on the final quality of the strips, since it determines the velocity distribution and the levels of turbulence of the liquid metal."

"Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the Gas produced with crude contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion.Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no carious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks,be equally effective in counter- acting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1920, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a ""composite"" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co, in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the toot being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, and the Parkersburg Rig and Reel Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistance to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the tanks were not subjected to contact with the quantities o highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of the aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in large quantities of brine would be handled, for pact experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines."

The molybdenum ores currently utilized in China are mostly molybdenum sulfide ores whereas oxidized molybdenum ores, being finely disseminated and difficult to process, have not been exploited and utilized effectively. In this article the beneficiation process of a molybdenum ore occurred in an oxidized ore zone was investigated in order to provide a new way for the development and utilization of the oxidized molybdenum ores in China. The molybdenum mineral in the ore was mainly wulfenite and the associated minerals included barite, limonite, quartz and small amount of cerusite. Limonite in the ore occurred in a crust and honeycomb-like colloidal state and composed the framework for the formation of the other minerals in the ore, which filled the pores in the framework. Wulfenite was mainly fine-grained and occurred in the fine porous crust and honeycomb-like framework. The finely disseminated ore structure made the separation and recovery of the molybdenum mineral in the ore very difficult. On the basis of the mineralogical study of the ore, experiments were conducted to compare the various mineral processing methods for the beneficiation of the ore, including single gravity concentration, single magnetic separation, single flotation, and a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration. The results indicated that with single gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 5.85 % Mo with a yield of 11.76 % and a Mo recovery of 43.5 % was produced. With single high intensity magnetic separation it was very hard to obtain a molybdenum concentrate product. With single flotation process a molybdenum concentrate containing 7.06 % Mo with a yield of 15.14 % and a Mo recovery of 62.63 % was produced. With a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 6.46 % Mo with a yield of 11.81 % and a Mo recovery of 42.11 % was produced. In conclusion, compared to the other methods the flotation process can produce more reasonable technological and economical results and is the best process for the exploitation and utilization of the finely disseminated oxidized molybdenum ore.

Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

John M. Cairns, in an interesting letter dated June. 19, 1918, tells us of his experiences in Italy. He says, "It may interest you to know I came out to Italy after being on the Afghan frontier of Indian Baluchistan, in August last year, and for some time was posted at Turin as Railway Transport officer. At that time Turin was in the toils of the riots which were the forerunners and preliminaries which led up to the great Italian retreat (Capretto). Since then I have been all over Italy from (deleted by the censor) in Transportation intelligence, and now have just been transferred to the Directorate of Requisitions and Hirings, which now permits great opportunities of going nearly all over Italy (deleted by the censor). Stanley C. Bullock, Captain, Royal Engineers, has been awarded the Military Cross. Charles L. Cantley was commissioned Lieutenant in the Fifth Royal Highlanders of Canada and went to France with the first Canadian contingent early in 1915, being Quartermaster of the Battalion. He went through the second battle of Ypres, Festubert, St. Eloi and the other engagements in which the Canadians were engaged up .to July, 1915, at which time he was promoted to the rank of Major. He was later ordered home by General Sir Sam Hughes, then Canadian Minister of War, and his services were loaned to the Nova Scotia Steel & Coal Co., suppliers of shell steel and forgers of shells in Canada. He continued with this company as chief officer in charge of munitions until the latter part of 1917, when he sailed for England with his old regiment. John D. Cooner was wounded on Apr. 9, 1918, by shrapnel, and is now in a hospital in Paris. He is getting along nicely. T. C. Gorman was killed in action in France on Mar. 18, 1918.

Chlorination of sulfide minerals and several prepared metal sulfides was studied. The resulting data were analyzed with respect to kinetics of the reactions and application to nonpolluting methods of winning metals from sulfide ores. Sulfides of iron, copper-iron, nickel, lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, arsenic, rhenium, molybdenum, and tungsten were investigated at temperatures up to 600° C. Copper-iron, lead, and zinc sulfides showed at least some product-controlled (parabolic) kinetics at the lower temperatures within the temperature ranges studied, but only nickel and silver sulfides had chlorination rates controlled by parabolic reaction kinetics in the commercially important temperature range of 450° to 600° C.

"The metal content of ore blocks can be calculated by the use of many different methods. These methods range in sophistication from manual calculation to computer. oriented techniques. In this case a cubic polynomial regression model is developed to depict the grade distribution of an orebody. Mine production, in stope dimensions, is then simulated on a computer to predict the output of metal content. The volume, grade and variance of the grade are estimated by triple integration and matrix algebra. A case study shows reasonable agreement between the results from the mathematical model and the mine geologists' estimate of production and ore reserve grade and tonnage."

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. The performance characteristics of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS's) were evaluated through full-scale testing in the Strategic Structures Testing Laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Center. Safety issues pertaining to the operation and design of these supports for pillar extraction during retreat mining are examined. A unique load frame, called the mine roof simulator, provided a realistic simulation of mining conditions by inducing vertical, horizontal, and lateral loading on the support. The purpose of these experiments was to determine the capabilities and limitations of the supports and to investigate factors that influence the measurement of loading and loading rate. An evaluation of the support design and load conditions that can cause support failure or loss of support capacity are discussed relative to the laboratory tests. In general, lateral loading perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the canopy is most severe, although horizontal loading in the direction of the long axis of the canopy can also produce critical loading in some cases. The experiments indicate that both setting force and leg pressure measurements are influenced by the staging of the leg cylinders. The implications of these factors on load rate measurement are evaluated. A comparison of MRS capacity and stiffness characteristics is made to conventional timber supports.

The iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in a 340 to 750-foot thick, Precambrian cherty iron formation termed "taconite." For about 65 years, extensive natural iron ore bodies were mined, and the ores either shipped as a direct ore or processed by gravity methods to a shipping grade iron ore. Since 1956, magnetite taconite ores, occurring in magnetite-rich horizons in the Biwabik iron formation, have been commercially concentrated and agglomerated. The transition from natural ores to concentrating-grade ores is progressing rapidly so that, in the near future, a major percentage of the iron ore shipped from the Mesabi Range will be as iron ore pellets produced from taconite. Natural iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in the Biwabik formation as trough ore bodies in elongated channels and as irregular and tabular deposits in fractured areas associated with faults and folds. Ore bodies range in size from a few thousand tons to hundreds of millions of tons and may occur in any part of the iron formation. In some areas of strong ore development, ore was formed from the hanging-wall argillite to the footwall quartzite. The natural ores and beneficiating-grade natural crude ores were formed by the oxidation of the iron minerals, magnetite, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and siderite, to hematite and goethite and by the removal of much of the silica in the cherty quartz and in the associated silicates by leaching. The ores are believed to have formed by the oxidizing and leaching action of surface waters. Magnetite taconite ores occur as stratigraphic zones in the Biwabik formation where it contains sufficient magnetite to be concentrated profitably, by magnetic methods, to give a magnetite concentrate that is agglomerated into a high quality product. Unoxidized taconite has an extensive distribution away from and between channels of oxidation and leaching but only a part of the unoxidized taconite is of ore grade. Two general types of magnetite taconite ore occur: ( 1) magnetite taconite of the Main Mesabi Range, generally west of Mesaba, which is composed of magnetite associated with cherty quartz, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and carbonates and (2) magnetite taconite of the Eastern Mesabi, generally east of Mesaba, composed of magnetite associated with quartz, cummingtonite, actinolite, ferrohypersthene, hedenbergite, fayalite, hornblende, pyroxene, garnet, and biotite. The Mesabi taconite is a metasediment derived from an iron- and silica-rich chemical sediment that has been regionally metamorphosed and, on the eastern end, additionally metamorphosed by the Duluth Gabbro Complex.

"Energy efficiency in mining and minerals processing forms part of Mintek’s long-term research strategy which includes a specific programme designed at overcoming the challenges faced by the South African pyrometallurgy industry.The electric smelting industry is currently severely constrained by the global economic downturn as well as by the availability and increasing cost of electricity. Efficient utilisation of electricity through energy recovery systems and improved smelting process flowsheets can significantly contribute towards creating sustainable operations.Apart from efficient engineering design and solid process control, smelting of either cold or hot pre-reduced ores has been shown to decrease furnace electricity consumption by more than 40%. Various methods of solid-state reduction tests have been carried out at Mintek in order to select the most appropriate process option in the context of the South African industry. This paper summarises a subset of the results obtained, specifically on pre-reduction tests done on South African chromite and manganese ore pellets.In this set of tests, it was found that the use of an organic binder, together with B2O3 as flux, promotes manganese ore pre-reduction, but retards the pre-reduction of chromite. By pre-reducing the manganese ore feed, significant cost savings can be achieved in subsequent smelting processes and there is potential to minimise manganese losses as a result of fuming, due to possible lower operating temperatures."
