This report is the fifth in a series presenting equilibrium vapor - liquid data for helium- bearing natural gases . It covers a 0.41 - mole - percent - helium natural gas that may be processed in the Department of the Interior's longrange helium conservation program . A Bureau of Mines phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain 139 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 85 experimental conditions at temperatures from 0 ° to -299 ° F and at pressures from 100 to 500 psia . An appendix covers phase data at 100 , 200 , and 300 psia and at temperatures from -125 ° to -275 ° F for the dehydrated gas containing its original concentration ( 0.2 mole - percent ) of carbon dioxide , and the effect of a preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon subsequent vapor - liquid compositions .

Cooling crystallization was used to separate iron (III) and nickel (II) from acidic sulfate solution produced by leaching of molybdenum-nickel black shale. The effect of K2SO4 concentration, crystallization temperature, solution pH and crystallization time on recovery of nickel (II) and precipitation of iron (III) was investigated, in order to obtain effective separation of nickel and iron. The optimum parameters determined were as follows: 200 g/L K2SO4, 10 °C crystallization temperature, solution pH of 0.5 and 24 h crystallization. Under these conditions, 97.6% nickel (II) was recovered as K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals and only 2.0% of the total iron (III) was precipitated. Recrystallization yielded K2Ni(SO4)2, 6H2O crystals with a purity of 98.4%.

While the production of crude oil and condensate in South Arkansas increased only 1.7 per cent over the 1940 figure, complete utilization of gas produced with the oil and condensate, and heretofore wasted, was beginning to be evidenced. There were 26,229,264 bbl. of oil and condensate produced in South Arkansas during 1941, as against 25,790,380 bbl. for the year 1940. (Fig. I.) Since 1936, deep producing sands have been discovered in 18 fields and during that period only 40 per cent of the total state production has come from Upper Cretaceous formations while 60 per cent came from the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic formations. The gas produced with crude oil and condensate from the latter formation contains large quantities of hydrogen sulphide, the maximum being 6900 grains per 100 cu. ft. in the Patton pool of Lafayette County. Gas Utilization During the latter part of 1940 and the early part of 1941, pilot plants were placed in operation to determine whether the hydrogen sulphide and deleterious material in South Arkansas gases could be removed economically. The Federal Government desired to build a large aluminum plant in the Ouachita Valley and was seeking cheap fuel for the generation of electricity. The fact that the gases were produced with appreciable quantities of crude oil and condensate made it available at a very low price, since the state's conservation law prohibits the flaring of any gas. As a result of these experiments the first large-scale unit for the processing of gases containing hydrogen sulphide was placed in operation on Sept. I, 1941. The plant is in the Magnolia oil field, Columbia County. It processes residue gas from the Shell Oil Company's gasoline plant in that field and also raw gas from the Village field, 6 miles east of the Magnolia field. The gas entering the desulphuri-zation unit is laden with approximately 1400 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft. and is stripped to a content of 4 grains per 100 cu. ft. The capacity of the plant is 15 million cu. ft. of gas treated daily under a pressure of 160 lb. per sq. in. The cost of treatment, exclusive of depreciation, is appreciably less than I per 1000 cubic feet. Two other plants of much greater capacity have been announced and priorities have been granted, which should bring the total amount of gas treated to 150 million cu. ft. daily. The gas to be treated will have a maximum hydrogen sulphide content of 4500 grains per 100 cu. ft. and will be processed under a pressure of 600 lb. per sq. in. These developments are something entirely new in field practice for the industry. The fact that this heretofore wasted gas is available at very low cost has led to the location of some eight war industries within the state, in addition to the alu-minum plant. A research program to aid development of better petroleum-recovery technology is in progress at the Appalachian Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va. The work is part of the overall effort of the Federal Bureau of Mines to effect true conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Knowledge of the magnitude of the interstitial water content of oil-bearing formations is important to petroleum-reservoir engineers because of the influence of water on fluid flow during oil production and because of the significance of water volume in oil-reserve evaluation. Such information on Appalachian oil-bearing formations is needed to aid in planning secondary oil-recovery projects. Generally, the interstitial water content of oil sands can be estimated by one or more of the following methods: Analysis of cores obtained with oil-base drilling fluid, electric logging, restored-state or capillary-pressure tests, centrifuge tests, evaporation tests, or mercury-injection tests.

The Vicksburg mining property lies in the southeastern foothills of the Star mining district, Beaver County, Utah (fig. 1). Within a few miles of the Vicksburg mine, lying in a semicircle from south to northwest, are such past producers of lead-silver ores as the Moscow, Hoosier Boy, Red Warrior, Wild. Bill, Harrington-Hickory, and many others. Farther to the north, in the San Francisco district, are the famous Horn Silver and Cactus mines. The formation at the Vicksburg property consists of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomitic limestone. These beds have been metamorphosed by the intrusion of irregular masses of porphyritic igneous rocks grading from quartz-monzonite to granodiorite. Ore deposition is in north-trending fissures of sheeted zones, contact metamorphic in type. These depositions were subsequently altered to gossan. A preliminary investigation of the Vicksburg property involving surveying, mapping, and sampling was made by W. A. Young and F. H. Gunnell, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in the fall of 1946. As a result of the investigation, a project was set up to investigate the possibility of ore occurrence at greater depth on the fissures under the mineralized zone by diamond drilling.

To facilitate increase in the rate of coal production the Bureau of Mines conducted a study several years ago, on the basis of which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives in single-hole blasting was raised from 1.5 to 3.0 pounds. Further demands for accelerated production led to consideration of multiple blasting in coal, a practice that is deemed hazardous and is not permitted by most States in this country. In multiple blasting, 10 to 20 pounds of explosive or more may be detonated in a coal face within a fraction of a second, which might result in blown-out or blown-through shots with possible ignition of gas or coal dust. As experimental evidence was lacking, in January 1949 an investigation was undertaken in the Experimental coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., principally to study and compare with single blasting the condi-tions under which simultaneous multiple blasting and particularly multiple short-delay blasting may be practiced without danger of igniting gas or coal dust in mines. The first report on this subject was presented at the last international conference of mine safety research. Since that time numerous additional experiments have been made; because of other pressing problems the work has been brought temporarily at least to a conclusion. This paper is the second report on the problem. It does not contain a detailed description of all test conditions and test arrangements, many of which were described 2 years ago in part 1 (now available as Report of Investigations 4868), but the conclusions are based on the entire study. A more complete review, which will incorporate data from the entire investigation, is being prepared as a Bureau of Mines bulletin. Up to the present time, short-delay blasting of coal in commercial mines has been introduced only experimentally in Washington and in a few mines elsewhere. If the system is adopted more generally, new problems may arise, and the study may have to be reopened.

Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. This has led to an exploration of how process simulation modelling could be used, in conjunction with production data, to provide a benchmark for the expected change, which could be expressed in monetary terms.The next goal, which is currently being achieved in operating plants, is to realise the greater value now available through the optimisation of cyclone configuration, which becomes practical when the confounding effects of cluster instability are removed through equal loading.CITATION:Doig, S G, Algie, S H, Lovatt, I A and Knoblauch, E J, 2018. From October 1943 to March 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted core drilling at the Victory fluorspar mine, Hardin County, Ill. to test the Fredonia limestone and the included sub-Rosiclare sandstone zone beneath the existing stopes. Twenty-one vertical holes were drilled to an average depth of 60 feet. Ore was penetrated in six holes. Since its discovery in 1927, the Victory mine has produced approximately 5 percent of the total fluorspar mined in the United states after that date. The ore discovered in the early mine development is now exhausted, except that contained in pillars drifting to the northeast has partly developed one substantial ore body, and company drilling has indicated another nearby. The increasing need for fluorite for war use in 1943 suggested the desirability of mining the pillars, provided it could be established that no ore beds existed below the stopes or in areas to which access would be obtained through the present workings. This work describes the work accomplished during the project and presents the data obtained.

The preparation of graduate talent for the mining industry is a challenging process, given the multifaceted and complex array of decisions mining engineers make in discharging their responsibilities. As leaders, mining engineers must manage operations, lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, chart the technological directions of companies and deal with several organizations for maintaining the technical and economic feasibility of operations within strategic and tactical framework. Traditionally, the completion of the bachelor of science degree curriculum, with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA), has been used as a graduation measure by Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Companies have long realized the limitations of the CGPA for recruiting graduates because mining engineering is an applied engineering discipline. Company recruiters have sought to correct the limitations by factoring experience and behaviors into the selection process when recruiting knowledgeable and well-rounded graduates. In this paper, the authors introduce a new metric, which combines the current CGPA (knowledge) with experience and attribute (KEA) metrics to gauge the job readiness of graduating engineers. The KEA metric, also called the job-readiness factor (JRF), is the sum of K (50%), E (30%) and A (20%). The KEA process has been applied to a graduating class in Missouri S&T to demonstrate the value of the new metric system. The results show a fairly positive correlation between CGPA and the KEA metric, with a coefficient of determination of about 70%. Overall, the KEA metric system provides a better picture of the capacity and job readiness of graduates entering the workforce.

THOUGH the largest volume use of natural gas has been, is. and in all probability will continue to be as a fuel for domestic and industrial heating, it has various market outlets, both as a fuel and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Natural gas is a preferred type of fuel where ease of control, fuel uniformity, and freedom from ash are of primary importance. Other industrially important uses are as a source of carbon black and as a fuel in various low-cost heating operations. Many other uses are of varying importance and new potential uses are continually being uncovered, some being of economic importance to the gas indus¬try as a whole, but most of them involve such small volumes of gas that they are only of passing interest. Since various products extracted from natural gas and recovered as by-products from petroleum refining, such as liquefied petroleum gas and fuel oil, are being utilized in many industrial and domestic heating applications, some consideration will have to be given such materials in order to present a reasonably complete story of the importance of natural gas. Some of these materials may prove to be transient competitors and will not be available when more profitable uses are found for them. Meanwhile, however, the potential volumes of such materials available, the current volumes being marketed, and the nature of the utilization are considered as constituting an essential part of the over-all fuel picture.

Most cyclic plasticity models used in multiaxial fatigue life predictions are based on a concept of a yield surface, which divides the elastic and plastic domains. Plastic straining occurs when the stress state reaches the surface and tries to move outward. Subsequent plastic straining causes the stress state to remain on the yield surface, which will translate to prevent the stress point from moving outside it according to a kinematic hardening rule that models the Bauschinger effect. The accurate modeling of the yield surface shape is fundamental to predict stress-strain relations. In this work, the main yield surface equations for isotropic materials are compared. Even though most materials can be modeled using Mises and Tresca surfaces, other need to consider the effect on the yield strength of the hydrostatic stress or the normal stress acting on a critical plane. It is shown that pressure-sensitive models originally devised for concrete can be applied to predict yielding in some materials, and even fatigue life for metallic structures with short cracks.

ZJ 201 (modified starch) is a non-toxic, odorless, and biodegradable polymeric depressant, which selectively depressed galena in batch flotation tests while chalcopyrite was not significantly affected. In a plant trial, copper-lead separation was successful for the first time without using dichromate. Moreover, the plant process could be changed to sequential Cu-Pb flotation using ZJ 201 for higher grade lead concentrate. A copper concentrate was obtained with a Cu grade of 24.91% and a Pb grade of 5.11%, which recovered 76.6% of the copper from the original ore; a lead concentrate was also obtained with a Pb grade of 21.90% and a Cu grade of 5.31%, which recovered 52.6% of the lead. In addition to the effective copper-lead separation observed in the plant trial, another improvement observed is that gold was recovered mostly in copper concentrate, which could be sold for higher prices. Au grade reached 230.64 g/t, and its recovery reached 65.8% in the copper concentrate. Au grade in lead concentrate was only 18.90 g/t.

In its strict application the name is limited to the fibrous varieties of the monoclinic amphiboles. Commercially, however, the most important of the asbestiform minerals is chrysotile, a fibrous variety of serpentine. About 95 per cent. of the asbestos used in manufacturing is chrysotile, and it commands a much higher price than any of the other fibrous minerals now on the market. Although the production of asbestos has increased rapidly in recent years, comparatively little has been published concerning its origin. AFTER nine years of extremely de- pressed business, marked mostly A with red ink on the balance sheets of most coal companies and with an increasing internal competitive struggle for diminishing markets, somewhat of a change appeared during 1939. Shipments increased and prices generally firmed, giving the coal industry increasing optimism and encouragement for the future. Specifically, it now appears that bituminous coal production for 1939 will approximate 378,000,000 tons, and anthracite production will approximate 47,500,000 tons, bituminous production being around 14 per cent ahead of 1938 and anthracite production 12 per cent better. The curve on p. 31, showing both bituminous and anthracite production, furnished by the bituminous coal division of the Department of the Interior, shows graphically most of the 1939 monthly production and clearly illustrates the increased production.

This report traces the development of techniques for the preparation of high-purity rare-earth metals. Rare-earth metals, excepting samarium, europium, and ytterbium, were prepared by converting their oxides to anhydrous chlorides or fluorides and reducing the rare-earth halides with active metals such as lithium or calcium. High-purity, anhydrous rare-earth chlorides were prepared by dissolving the rare-earth oxides in hydrochloric acid to form hydrated chlorides and by subsequently dehydrating the hydrated salts in the presence of ammonium chloride at temperatures ranging from 70° to 360° C. while under reduced pressure (50 microns to 1 inch Hg). The chlorides were also prepared by direct chlorination of rare-earth oxide-carbon mixtures. Reaction efficiencies in excess of 95 percent were obtained by either method; however, purer chlorides were prepared by the aqueous ammonium chloride conversion method. Purification of yttrium chloride by high-temperature vacuum distillation proved to be an effective method of separating, oxygen-bearing compounds from the chloride. Yttrium metal prepared from purified chloride contained significantly smaller amounts of oxygen (990 p.p.m. oxygen in yttrium metal prepared from raw chloride and 200 p.p.m. in that prepared from distilled chloride).

A new approach to resource estimation at the exploration stage is emerging, based on the application of simple software techniques. The techniques combine the power of interactive graphics with proven database, analysis and estimation tools. With effective use of these tools the geologist now has maximum chance of deriving a reliable structural and grade model from the limited exploration data. Unlike cutoff-based polygonal methods, the resultant geological model can immediately be used to evaluate any economic scenario.These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system. With the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, MINEX-3D makes the power of this new 'desktop geological modelling' accessible to most exploration geologists.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to treat waste water that contains cyanide. This report describes a new method that removes heavy metals and all forms of cyanide. In the first step, hydrogen peroxide and sodium thiosulfate are added at pH 7 to 9 in a 1:2 molar ratio to convert free and weakly complexed cyanide to nontoxic thiocyanate. Then steryldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is added to precipitate ferro-cyanide, and finally, ferric sulfate is added as a sweep floc and sequestrant for heavy metals. After the suspended solids settle, the water is polished by filtering. The water initially contained 1 to 5 mg/L Fe, 1 to 5 mg/L Cu, and 10 to 30 mg/L total cyanide; the level of each of these constituents was reduced to less than 0.02 mg/L.

Some months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter he had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908, and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel. A brief examination of the tests in Table 1 shows that certain treatments of, for instance, 0.30 per cent, carbon steel are not represented by any test data. Had this been a laboratory research, this information would undoubtedly have been furnished, but as this work was done for commercial purposes the omissions are due to the fact that, at the time the work was done, we saw no advantage in trying every composition of steel with each treatment discussed in the paper.
