"Oxide-facies banded iron formation in the Third Portage Lake area is hosted by ultramafic and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and related sedimentary rocks of the Archean (2.8 Ga) Woodburn Lake Group, 80 km north of Baker Lake. These rocks record at least two phases of metamorphism/ metasomatism. Greenschist facies metamorphism, in the temperature range of 370°C to 520°C and at pressures above 2.3 kbar, has affected all rocks on a regional scale. Later mineralization and alteration of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated volcanic rocks resulted from metasomatic fluids which carried Mg, K, Ca, S, As, Cu and Au. These fluids were confined to ductile to brittle, cross-cutting and layer-parallel micro-shears developed in the thickened hinge region of a shallow plunging recumbent fold. Metasomatic reactions yielded cummingtonite + biotite-bearing assemblages which are associated with strongly mineralized iron formation. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide phase and occurs within ductily deformed iron formation where it pervasively replaces magnetite. Minor fine-grained chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite generally occur as inclusions within pyrrhotite and recrystallized magnetite, and rarely as individual grains. Pyrite is restricted to brittlely deformed iron formation, and to the contact between iron formation and altered ultramafic rocks, where it is associated with quartz veins. Pyrite typically replaces pyrrhotite. Native gold is associated with both pyrrhotite and pyrite, but higher gold concentrations are associated with pyrite. Grunerite/Ca-amphibole + stilpnomelane and sparse pyrrhotite and pyrite characterize weakly mineralized iron formation. Within adjacent ultramafic rocks, metasomatic reactions yielded assemblages of interlayered Ca-amphibole + biotite, and talc + Ca-amphibole + carbonate + biotite. K-Ar geochronology on metasomatic biotite from mineralized BIF yielded a 1791 ± 32 Ma age.An epigenetic model is favored for the emplacement of gold. The age of the gold mineralization in the Third Portage Lake area is uncertain, but may be Proterozoic based on the preliminary isotopic age and by analogy with Proterozoic gold deposits elsewhere in this part of the Churchill Structural Province. "Frac sand is industrial silica sand much like glass, foundry, filtration and blast sand. The sand must meet certain specifications set forth by the industry that consumes the product. The production and consumption of frac sand has experienced record growth in the last 10 years because of new oil and gas drilling, new horizontal well drilling, multi-stage fracturing and the stimulation of older wells that have little or no production. Frac sand is needed to “prop open” the fractures in the rock reservoirs to allow oil and gas to flow out more freely.According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated production of frac sand in 2015 was 71 percent of the total production of industrial silica sand or 67.4 Mt (74.3 million st). This is a decrease of about 12 percent from 2014. However, the silica sand industry and other industry sources estimate only 50 Mt (55 million st) of frac sand were produced in 2015. In recent years both the USGS and industry studies have been very close in estimating the production of frac sand but with the recent downturn in frac sand production, perhaps, reporting to the USGS was not as accurate. These discrepancies may be that the USGS statistics are based on voluntary reporting by the industry and some companies report their approximate production, others may not. It is always difficult to obtain accurate production figures of any industrial mineral or construction aggregate operation as most companies tend to keep those figures somewhat confidential. It is certainly accurate to report that the production of frac sand had decreased since the last quarter of 2014 and through 2015. The oversupply of oil and natural gas has led to this decline in frac sand usage. Oversupply has idled drilling rigs and well completion activities. World Oil Magazine reports that 2015 was the worst year for rigs in a quarter century. The only wells being completed are those that have contract agreements to do so, others have been capped. Very few new wells are being drilled. Since about 98 percent of well completion is sand and water, the sand supply has caught up with the demand. There are some bright spots in the “oil patch” as the Permian Basin in Texas and the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma have kept pace somewhat with drilling and completion. It has been reported that the frac sand producers in the Brady-Voca, TX area are producing to nearly capacity. The northern frac sand producers like those in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota are feeling the downturn because of the cost of shipping sand to these moderately active basins and plays. The “rule of thumb” is that freight is 2/3 and sand is 1/3 the cost."

The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

INTRODUCTION The work described in the following paper was under-taken with a view to determining, if possible, the relative importance of some of the phenomena on which flotation seems to depend, in the hope that, if this information could be obtained, it would be of value in dealing with the problem as a whole. At the outset, brief reference will be made to three papers which had a considerable bearing on the course followed in the present investigation. In 1919, Langmuir, in a paper on 'The Mechanism of the Surface Phenomena of Flotation', showed that mono-molecular films of very great stability could be produced on solid surfaces with oleic acid, but that pure paraffin oil, though spreading readily on a dean dry surface, was easily displaced by water.

Os Sistemas de Nível 2 de Otimização da ArcelorMittal Tubarão impactam diretamente no processo produtivo (Qualidade, Produtividade, Produção), sendo que parte considerável destes sistemas são executados em plataforma legada de hardware (Alpha Digital). Em 2011/2012, o fim do ciclo de vida da Plataforma Alpha (Open VMS) anunciado pela HP trouxe este tópico para um lugar de destaque na matriz de risco da Engenharia de Automação. A principal estratégia é a migração para novas plataformas, porém associa-se a esta opção um custo e tempo elevado, principalmente se tratando de sistemas de alta complexidade e disponibilidade. A gestão de um estoque de sobressalentes também se torna cada vez mais difícil devido à escassez destes equipamentos no mercado global. Considerando estes fatores, a busca de soluções alternativas de curto prazo se fez necessária. Uma tecnologia de emulação e virtualização de plataforma foi validada e um projeto piloto implantado no sistema responsável pela otimização do processo de reaquecimento de placas do Laminador de Tiras a Quente. O uso desta tecnologia promoveu uma portabilidade direta do sistema para um hardware padrão de mercado (Intel x64), em curto prazo e sem impactos operacionais, podendo ser disseminada para outros sistemas, garantindo um pulmão para futuras migrações.

The annual production of mineral and mineral-based wastes in Canada is conservatively estimated to be 400 million tons. Over 90 per cent of this amount is waste rock or mill tailings from the mining and mineral processing industry. The remainder are slags and ashes from the metallurgical industry, and sludges from the chemical industry. Because of impurity content, remote location, or both, most wastes have limited usefulness and, indeed, are a liability in that they must be transported to waste disposal sites and contained therein. Certain mineral wastes do, however, have potential value. Some contain small percentages of metals that may be economically recoverable with price increases; others consist of mineral material that may be used for such purposes as road base, construction aggregate, railroad ballast, and in the manufacture of bricks or blocks. Increased interest has been shown in mineral wastes in recent years. This paper reviews the types of mineral wastes available in Canada, briefly describes a number that have potential value, and notes possible uses and related research by CANMET and other organizations.

Hydroseparation (http://www.cnt-mc.com) was used to concentrate sized fractions (from <38 ¦m to 150 ¦m) of various ore products ahead of carbon-in-pulp (CIP)-treatment. The resulting size-by-size concentrates were mounted as monolayer polished sections and subjected to automated unattended precious metal searches by image analysis (see Lastra, Wilson and Cabri, 1999). Systematic variations in Au-deportment permit quantification of Au reporting as discrete grains from fresh-feed through to pressure oxidation (POX)- and CIP-feed. Application of hydroseparation, image analysis and assays to characterising tailings (from <10 ¦m to 106 ¦m) from four mine sites is also described. Results are encouraging enough to predict that the combination of hydroseparation (HS) and automated image analysis could become a standard methodology for study of precious metal ores and metallurgical products.

There is no doubt that the dominant future source of gold will be the so-called refractory ores, especially those with gold in a pyrite/arsenopyrite matrix. Minproc Engineers is taking an active role in establishing detailed design criteria for a number of apparently competing processes. This involves generating a detailed understanding of the metallurgy involved, systematic pilot plant testing, and the application of advanced engineering technologies. This presentation outlines the approach adopted by Minproc as well as the design criteria for several current projects.

Este artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar a capacidade de remoção de íons Pb2+ de um argilomineral oriundo da região sudoeste do Pará. A caracterização do argilomineral foi feita através das técnicas de Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). A metodologia utilizada foi a do sistema de banho finito para determinação da percentagem de remoção (%Rem) do argilomineral. Foram utilizadas três concentrações sintéticas de chumbo (10, 30 e 50ppm) com diferentes pH (3, 4 e 5) para avaliação da absorção de íons pelo argilomineral. Ainda, este argilomineral foi revestido com quitosana com previsão de aumentar a adsorção dos íons Pb2+. Os resultados mostraram o potencial de adsorção acima de 95% para todas as concentrações em pH 5; e a adição de quitosana aumentou esse potencial para acima de 99%. Em pH 4, a, a quitosana proporcionou aumento na percentagem de remoção na concentração de 10ppm. Isso implica em uma potencial aplicação para remoção de metais pesados em efluentes da região sudoeste do Pará em vista da extração de minério presente nesta região.

Elevated temperature electrical resistivity measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines on arc-melted, spin-cast, and hot-pressed columbium carbide¬carbon (CbC-C) and zirconium carbide-carbon (ZrC-C) materials up to 2,000° C. The CbC-C materials displayed electrical resistivity values ranging from 35.20 microhm cm at 23° C for hot-pressed material containing 12 wt pct carbon to 242.64 microhm cm at 1,622° C for arc-cast material containing 17.0 wt pct carbon. Electrical resistivity values ranged from 29 microhm cm at 20° C for arc-cast ZrC-C containing 16 wt pct carbon to 279 microhm cm at 1,951° C for hot-pressed ZrC-C containing 21 wt pct carbon. Data from a previous report were included to establish comparison between the electrical resistivities of the CbC-C, ZrC-C, and HfC-C systems.

Ilmenite from the Everett deposit in Quebec was characterized both chemically and mineralogically. The sample investigated contained the following main components: 40% Fe2O3, 21% TiO2 and 21% SiO2. The ilmenite grains contained about 20 to 25% hematite intergrown blades, with widths ranging from 2 to 30 \u03bcm. Crushing the sample to less than 0.85 mm led to significant liberation of the ilmenite from the gangue minerals. Gravity separation followed by magnetic separation of this size fraction led to a TiO2 concentrate grading of about 30% TiO2, with a recovery of 94%.

An architect representing the Atlanta office of the Brick Institute of America periodically presents a slide lecture to interested groups entitled "The First 10,000 Years of Brick". The title signifies the fact that brick, man's oldest manufactured building material, has been around for quite some time and will continue to be utilized by architects and builders in the foreseeable future. This is not to say that the brick industry can rest on its laurels and ignore the competition presented by newer more innovative products. The industry will have to be equally inovative and market oriented in order to maintain its market share of the predicted construction boom between now and the year 2000. The implication is made, however, that brick can be produced under rudimentary conditions and that the desire to use the product has been long standing. In addition, history has sham that there has been plentiful clay available to produce the product. This paper is an attempt to assess the climate in which the brick industry will operate during the next 26 years. An analysis of regulatory conditions affecting the manufacture of the product will be followed by an assessment of the materials environment in which the industry will be operating. These factors are then reconciled with a projected demand for the product to determine the ability of the industry to satisfy future demand for brick. From a mineral point of view this paper will address itself generally to the availability of and demand for clay. However, other than a brief overview of the uses of other specific types of clay, it will concentrate on the clays utilized in the production of structural clay products, specifically brick.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the slurry transport and deposition properties of coal waste. A 188.5-ft pipe test loop was constructed with instruments to measure density, flow, and power and discharge, suction, and differential pressures. A 20-ton ample of Western coal waste was crushed and screened to 100 pct minus 1/2 in. Eight loop tests using this graded waste were run at slurry densities ranging from 1.15 (25 wt-pct solids) to 1.46 (60 wt-pct sol-ids) 0 The resultant friction-'pressure gradients ranged from 0,06 to 0.24 ft of water per foot of 4-in standard steel pipe. Particle-size degradation was significant.. In a typical loop test lasting 25 min, the minus 200-mesh fraction increased from 19 pct to 34 pct. Deposition tests showed that without the use of a flocculant, the slurries would not dewater when left to stand for 1 week. With flocculant, additional water was releas2d; however, the settled slurries remained thixotropic. Further testing is necessary to determine their suitability for use as backfill material in active mines.

Mine safety personnel reported occurrences of excessive "glove-fingering" and other problems with resin-grouted roof bolt installa tions. To study these problems, the Bureau of Mines designed a test plan to (1) obtain baseline information on several resin cartridges and (2) investigate the variables involved in the installation of a resin bolt. Three brands of resin representative of the industry in January 1983 were selected for cartridge evaluation. The installation variables selected for study were the method of installation, the hole depth, and the hole annulus. These variables were studied by installing a series of bolts in concrete blocks using different values for each variable. Results of the research show overspinning the resin may cause problems, but they can be avoided by using the spin times recommended by manufac-turers. Excessive glove-fingering is not a problem if the manufacturer-recommended installation procedures are followed.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. During the fall of 1942, the Bureau of Mines put down nine diamond-drill holes at the Cape Rosier zinc-copper-lead mine in Hancock County, Maine, that aggregated 2,883 feet of bore. These holes supplemented 13 holes, aggregating. 5,501 feet, put down on the property about 2 years earlier by the St. Joseph Lead Co. Veins of mixed sulfides were intersected in 15 of the holes drilled. Beneficiation tests were made on samples of ore obtained from old dumps. Zinc-copper-lead sulfides occur at the Cape Rosier mine as lenses in a zone of altered agglomerate beneath and between a series of diorite sills. The mineralized zone strikes F. 17° E. and dips southeast. Between July 1881 and September 1883 the mine produced about 10,000 tons of ore reported to have contained 20 percent zinc, 2.8 percent copper, and some lead. The crude ore was hand-sorted, and some. 3,000 tons were reported shipped.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

The Bureau of Mines undertook research to determine the bromide and iodide content of Mississippi and Alabama oilfield waters of the Tertiary and Cretaceous Period to determine genetic relationships of the ions, to determine their origin, and to determine their genetic relation to petroleum. The 280 samples were analyzed after a pretreatment to remove interferences. The iodide was oxidized to iodate and was titrated with thiosulfate. The bromide was oxidized to bromate and was determined iodometrically. A computer was used to calculate the correlation coefficients of iodide to bromide and to other ions. The other ions are sodium plus potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate, and sulfate. The mineral content of the samples ranged from 52 to 1,760 mg/l for bromide and from 2 to 65 mg/l for iodide. The mean bromide-to-chloride and iodide-to-chloride ratios were 0.0065 and 0.0002. The correlation coefficient matrix and linear plots indicated a definite bromide-to-calcium relationship for the brines investigated.
