In order to guarantee the quality of the sinter and process control some measurements are made such as RDI and FeO (Fe2+). However, the behavior of sinter during reduction in the blast furnace is not always understood, when it is analyzed only metallurgical, physical and chemical quality. Therefore, it is necessary to find alternative techniques to understand more this behavior. In this work four experimental trials were performed to obtain sinter samples with different FeO (Fe2+) contents. Optical microscopy was performed to identify and quantify the phases in sinter and to evaluate the magnetic behavior of each one, the Magnetic Susceptibility technique was used. The results obtained between Optical Microscopy, Magnetic Susceptibility and quality parameters were compared and then was identified that Magnetic Susceptibility may be an alternative to help the understanding of sinter behavior in Blast Furnace.

Ground support requirements for safe and economical design of room and pillar coal mining layouts are reviewed. The design methods for mine roofs and mine pillars are discussed and the role of the geotechnical aspects is considered. It is shown that current support design procedures in the United States do not utilize fully the latest research findings and the need for more effective technology transfer in coal mine ground control is emphasized. Promising new developments in ground support are identified and possible research areas are suggested.

An investigation was made of the lensile proper-ties of recrystallized high-purity tungsten and a W-1 pel ThO2 dispersed-phase alloy over the temperature region of 800° to 2400°C. The thoria addition resulted in a modest strengthening effect over the entire temperature region. A decrease in ductility of both materials occurred above 0.5 Tm which was caused by void formation. Current theories of IT has long been recognized that a second phase of hard particles has a strengthening effect on a pure metal. At low or intermediate temperatures (<0.5 Tm), the strengthening effect is thought to arise mainly from the interaction of dislocations with dispersed particles. Above 0.5 Tm, dynamic recovery processes greatly alter the deformation mechanisms from those simply involving glide, and grain bound- strengthening by a dispersed second phase do not adequately explain the tensile results. Melallographic examination suggests that the improved strength of tire alloy results from the effect of thoria on the mierostructure. Stress-dependent thermally activated processes were found to occur high temperatures. aries may act as sources of weakness rather than strength because of grain boundary sliding. Grain boundary sliding at high temperatures has been postulated to be the primary factor giving rise to the formation of voids or cavities at grain boundaries1-3 which in turn cause premature failure and poor ductility.4 Voids, once formed, can grow by the condensation of vacancies from the equilibrium concentration&apos; or from the excess vacancies produced by the deformation.4,5 The high-temperature tensile properties of unalloyed tungsten have previously been investigated by Sikora and Ha116 and also by Taylor and Boone.7 The purpose of the present work was to investigate

The objective of the study is development of an analytic process based on rock and explosive properties which allows the prediction of the stress distributions and fracture zone around explosive charges. A computer program has been written for this purpose, using a finite difference approximation to the momentum equation, to describe the motion of the surrounding rock by step-wise integration. Its application provides ground motion data such as stress components, displacement and particle velocity as a function of position and time with respect to a spherical charge. The effect of tensile and shear failure on these ground motion parameters can be included. The analytic procedure contained within this program has been used to predict peak stress as a function of distance in rock for rock-explosive combinations for which field data exists to determine peak stress levels directly. Two methods have been used for the spherical charge which in the analysis replaces the actual cylindrical charges: instantaneous application of peak pressure to a charge having a radius equivalent in contained volume to a charge having a length to diameter ratio of 1, and gradual pressure build up to peak pressure with a charge radius equivalent in contained volume to the total charge used in the field test. The agreement with field data would appear best with the latter treatment. The peak stresses obtained are in closer agreement with field measured peak-stress and a better approximation to field stress wave duration exists in the case of gradual pressure build up. Heavy mineral sand exploration drilling prior to the 1970s generally utilised open hole auger and air-blast type drilling. However, mining reconciliations were poor and limitations on accuracy and precision of drilling results were severe.Working with the exploration companies, Wallis Drilling principals designed various systems, including what was termed the ‘Eneabba System’ and then the ‘Capel Twin-Tube System’. Eventually the company with its improvements developed and patented the Aircore Drilling System.Aircore drilling has subsequently become recognised as an excellent drilling system for exploration and mine-sample drilling that gives good precision and accuracy in sampling both above and below water. Its use has also been extended to many other commodities and is used in a number of overseas countries.This paper documents anecdotally the development of the system, identifying problems encountered during the times it was evolving and of the means to overcome the problems as being the documentation of the story by the inventors and developers in Wallis Drilling Company. Aircore drilling system is a Western Australian technological development owing its existence to the designing and incorporation of a number of discrete improvements along the way and recognises the tenacity and inventiveness of all who contributed to the system, in both Wallis and also in a number of companies that gave the impetus to succeed.

"Despite the difficult economic climate for the mining industry, more than 6,300 people joined SME for its 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 21-24.Nearly every commodity has been bruised and battered during the past year, leading to one of the more difficult cycles for the industry in the past decade. Coal has taken some of the hardest hits and other commodities, such as copper and iron ore, have felt the sting of a slower growth in China and an oversupply on the market.The difficult conditions could not be ignored, but they did not deter SME from offering a forum for the industry to share knowledge, network with peers and learn about the best products and practices while visiting the sold-out exhibit hall (844 booths and 627 vendors) or while attending any of the 121 technical sessions that were offered.The current state of the industry was one of the overriding themes of the conference and during the challenging times there are often cutbacks as operations look to become leaner and more efficient, however, there is one area that cannot be cut – health and safety.The conference kicked off with a fascinating presentation from Colonel Mike Mullane, a former NASA astronaut who, in 1978, was selected as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Air Force in 1990.In his speech to a packed audience, he warned of the dangers of cutting corners to get the job done more quickly by guarding against the “normalization of deviance.”Normalization of deviance is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm. Usually, the acceptance of the lower standard occurs because the individual or team is under pressure (budget, schedule, etc.) and perceives it will be too difficult to adhere to the original higher standard. Their intention may be to revert back to the higher standard when this period of pressure passes. However, by getting away with the deviation from the higher standard, it is likely they will do the same thing when the same stressful circumstances arise again. Over time, the individual/team fails to see their actions as deviant."

"Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. This bulletin presents the results of 36 tests made on a 468-horsepower Edge Moor boiler fired with pulverized coal at the Oneida Street Station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co., Milwaukee, Wis. The tests were made by the fuel section of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation. Illinois coal was used as fuel; the furnace, burners, and feeders were designed by the Locomotive Pulverized Fuel Co. The object of the tests was to determine what over-all boiler efficiency could he obtained with pulverized coal under various conditions of furnace operation and with coal of different fineness and moisture content. The investigation was thorough. The pulverized coal, as it was supplied to the furnace, was weighed in specially designed tanks placed on platform scales. Twenty-nine of the tests were of 24 hours duration, three of 16 to 18 hours, and four of 12 hours. All tests are reported excepting two-8 and 20-which had to be stopped abruptly, No.8 because a motor actuating the coal-feed screw burned out and No. 20 because of trouble with the feed pump. Tests 1 to 27, inclusive, were made with round burners and tests 28 to 3Rwith spreading burners. In the first nine tests a large excess of air was supplied in an effort to prevent the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. In tests 10 to 16 the supply of excess air was reduced in order to get a high efficiency, regardless of the slagging of ash at the furnace bottom. Tests 17 to 27 were made with a water screen about 10 inches above the bottom of the furnace, to make possible the burning of coal with a small supply of excess air without the ash fusing at the bottom of the furnace. Tests 28,29, and 30 were made without the water screen and with a small supply of excess air, and tests 31 to 38 with a water screen around the walls near the bottom of the furnace. Tests 32, 33, 34, and 35 were run with coarser coal than that used ordinarily at the plant. Tests 36,37, and 38 were made with undried coal.

Bureau of Mines investigated the progressive impact that petroleum (crude oil and condensate) operations in the Gulf of Mexico have had on onshore operations and the expected effect of increasing activities in this area on future petroleum supplies from domestic sources. The data analyzed include capital expenditures, number of wells drilled, success ratio for exploratory wells, daily production per completion, annual producing rates, and oil reserves. The report compares offshore and onshore data and ascertains trends in petroleum industry operations. Observed data and trends indicate that in the near future Gulf of Mexico development and production will continue to increase relative to total U.S. petroleum activity. By 1975 annual oil and condensate production from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to be in the range of 750 million bbl to 1,150 million bbl, and account for approximately 20 to 30 pct of the estimated total domestic production.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has played an integral role in many large scale tunneling projects globally. Until recently, it has been regarded as a complementary monitoring tool. On the Los Angeles Metro Purple Line Phase 1, InSAR was proposed as a primary means to replace weekly and bi-weekly surface monitoring requirements on surrounding critical infrastructure. This paper will summarize the statistical analysis approach engaged in order to compare and contrast a year of historical InSAR data to known geodetic survey data, in order to utilize InSAR as an operational monitoring tool on this project.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining’s East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and RailSystems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km(3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

"THIS IS THE THIRD of the consecutive Annual Forums on Grinding that were instituted by Mr. L. E. Djingheuzian in 1957. The first was on the subject of Ball Milling (Transactions, Volume LX, 1957) and the second on The N on-Cataracting Ball Mill (Trans-actions, Volume LXI, 1958). From the discussions at these forums it was evident that one of the most important factors affecting the efficiency of grinding is the shape of the liners. In order to make a study of liners in use, it was •decided to seek the co-operation of operators across the country by sending out questionnaires requesting basic information. Additionally, these operators were urged to set down briefly any pertinent information on the subject acquired through experience and experiments at their own particular plants. A compilation and analysis of these data were to form a basis for discussion at the Forum on Liners at the Annual Meeting in Montreal, April, 1959. The response of the milling fraternity to this solicitation was most gratifying, and clearly indicated the importance attached by the operators to the effect of liner design upon overall grinding performance."

Every few weeks United States newspapers of 25 or 30 years age ran scare-heads telling of some mine disaster, which was a first-page attraction for a day or two and then was forgotton until another disaster occurred a few weeks later. Interspersed with these disasters were the so-called sniping mine accidents, causing the death of one or two mine workers. The summation of all types of mine fatalities usually exceeded 3,000 a year. In the period 1906-10, inclusive, there wore 84 major explosion disasters (or about 17 per year) in united States coal mines; the fatalities resulting from those disasters numbered 2,388 for the 5-year period. These frightful catastrophies helped to cause the total number of fatalities in our coal mines for the 5 years (including the fatalities from major explosions) to reach the enormous total of 13,288, an average of 2,658 per year. In addition, some hundreds of other typos of mining accidents swelled the annual fatality list to upwards of 3,000. This admittedly deplorable condition created so much Nation-wide comment that Congress was impressed with the necessity of having something done by the Federal Government with a view to trying to halt at least sonic of the excessive loss of life in our mines; in consequence, the Bureau of Mines was created and began to function in July 1910.

This paper explores the financial impact of the initial version of the Saskatchewan Potash Reserve Tax; first, a one; and second, in conjunction with the other taxes affecting the industry&apos;s profitability. A though the introduction of the Reserve Tax is shown to lead to a substantia increase in a hypothetical firm&apos;s effective tax burden, the more unusual outcomes frequently attributed to this levy on y occur after the imposition of other non-provincial tax rulings. Despite this qualification, the results obtained suggest that the Reserve Tax undoubted y acted as a catalyst in the polarization of attitudes during the ear y period of industry/government confrontation

Lithium is a key component for future electric vehicle batteries and energy storage. The future availability of lithium to meet the growing demands remains in question. Around 60% of lithium resources exist in the form of continental brines. Traditional methods to recover lithium from brines use solar concentration with precipitation and have found limitations in lithium extraction due to interference of Mg in high Mg/Li brines. Thus, there is a need for highly selective adsorbents. Recently, spinel structured delithiated lithium manganese oxides have demonstrated promising results. However, due to the small particle sizes, it is economically difficult to recover the adsorbents and thereby limits industrial applications. In our work, LiMn2O4 ion sieve was synthesized and immobilized on diatomaceous earth. Fundamental adsorption studies were carried out in lithium buffer solutions to understand the nature of adsorption and kinetics. The adsorbents were also tested for recycle stability, as well as recovery of lithium from Great Salt Lake water samples.

During 2001 the Ridgeway Gold Mine, driven by company initiatives and recent NSW legislation (General Rule 2000), developed and implemented Major Hazard Management Plans to control significant hazards identified at the underground mine. The paper presents the objectives, issues, outcomes and process involved in the development and implementation of the plans at Ridgeway. The sharing of the experience gained and an overview of the intended way forward will offer a valuable insight for other mines considering embarking on a similar journey.
