The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal mines. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to deter- mine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m5 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to be attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

The reclamation of an open dragline pit (Pond A3P-2) at the Gibbons Creek lignite mine in east-central Texas required neutralization of acid mine pit water. At the start of treatment with hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) on March 28, 2000, the pond had partially filled with 913,000 m3 (740 acre ft) of pH 4.9 water. Another 666,600 m3 (540 acre ft) of pH 3.3 water was pumped in from an adjacent pit (PitA3P- 1). By the end of the project (July 5, 2000), a combined volume of 1,579,000m3(1,280ac-ft or 417milliongal) in PondA3P-2 had been successfully treated to pH 8.2 with 431 t (475 st) of lime. This was two to three times more neutralizer than laboratory trials and detailed chemical titration had predicted. The main reasons for the difference are thought to be the inadequate representation in a laboratory setting of some of the chemical reactions that occurred in the field, including incomplete mixing of reactants, reactions with clay minerals in the pit walls, the kinetics of biologically-mediated reactions and the kinetics of aluminum oxyhydroxide polymerization (aging).

METHODS in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the color of a definite volume of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance' present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are; (1) the quantity of the coloring matter, (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution, and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is pre¬pared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles, or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. Continued expansion of United States energy requirements has focused ever increasing attention on this tremendous resource, particularly as efficiency in mining and transporting of coal, as well as in electrical energy generation and transmission have improved and as hydrogenation and gasification of coal approach economic feasibility. This "total energy" concept for coal includes all of the energy uses that coal offers and has resulted in mergers of oil and coal companies and acquisition of coal re- serves by oil companies, as well as by coal companies and others. There is no doubt that these coals are entering an exciting new era of exploration and development that will result in greatly increased production. As a matter of fact, increased consumption for energy generation is well under way and recognition of the economic feasibility of high-Btu pipeline gas and synthetic petroleum products from coal is imminent. As coal is gradually displaced in steam electric generation by the more exotic fuels and processes, it will be increasingly used as raw material for the synthetic petro-chemical industry and the organic chemical industry.

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. DEVELOPMENT of the lime industry- in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there are today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. GEOLOGY The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft. of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaC03; 0.35 Si02; 0.3 R203; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 S03. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 ½ º. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevieve crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 ½ º the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile

The federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal industries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Because of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The taxes indicated above, therefore, are not final and may conceivably be very materially increased. For 1918, the taxes are expected to be still greater, but no compilations are yet available. Taxes at a high rate are to continue indefinitely. The subject is clearly of gravest import to the mining industry in particular. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is charged by law with the administration and collection of the taxes, is determined that these functions shall be performed in a just and businesslike way. Fairness and finality are to be the chief objectives. In view of the peculiar conditions that attach to the tax program as applied to mines and other wasting industries, like oil, gas, and timber, the Commissioner has resorted to professional advice and assistance by manning a Sub-division of Natural Resources with competent engineers, brought in from the several industries, into whose hands he has placed for solution the technical questions involved. These engineers have a two-fold duty: (1) to devote to the solution of these problems their own knowledge and experience; (2) through their acquaintance with their respective industries, and with the men engaged in those industries, to focus upon these problems, by conferences and otherwise, the best opinion of the country. The laboratory investigations which are necessary to evaluate the mineral processing effectiveness usually include density separation of narrow size fraction of the feed and one of the products. In each size - density fractions the content of valuable mineral has to be determined. These data and yield in each size - density fraction can be specified by a matrix of partition coefficients. They are counterparts of recoveries. These coefficients can be compared with the mean recoveries at each density or size fraction or the total recovery, to determine which density - size fractions are processed in the best or worst way. The basic categories are: vector of metal content l _i 1711, 7t2, òòò, ltM I ò vector of particle size distribution x = I d1, d2, ..., dN I ò matrix of partition coefficients P11, P12, Pi N P _ P21, P22, ..., P2 N PM1 PM2..., PMN These three conceptions allow one to determine all the basic metallurgical parameters of a mineral processing unit. Losses of valuable mineral are connected with: ò mineralogical composition of the ore (types of minerals, their properties, dissemination, crystallochemical affinity, type and properties of gangue minerals), ò applied technology and technical equipment (beneficiation as a stochastic process, processing methods, process control, intergrowth liberation, water quality). Examples of application of the analytical method proposed are given for zinc - lead and coal processing plants.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

The present status of the National Bureau of Standards program is that many magnetic tapes of analog data have been recorded in four major mines. Each mine uses different types of equipment. In addition, some surface measurements of noise have been made at two additional mines. Two types of recordings have been made: (1) broadband measurements for spectral plots and (2) narrowband measurements for amplitude probability density (APD) plots. Only data from one mine (Robena #4) has been processed and was, presented at this workshop. The short-term goals are: (1) finish processing data from the other mines, (2) establish or reduce measurement system uncertainties, (3) put Robella report into final form for distribution, and (4) hold a review to determine what has been done, to distribute and to interpret the preliminary data, and to determine what still needs to be done. Long-term goals are: (1) complete final reports on each of the mine trips, (2) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines already visited and establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions, and (3) establish techniques for predicting noise in mines that have not been visited (but that use similar equipment to those visited) and also establish uncertainty bounds for these predictions. Specific factors or formats to be presented include: (A) For underground broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 100 kHz spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 384 kHz spectral plots 3. 300 Hz to 192 kHz spectral plots 4. 300 Hz to 6kHz (subject to change to 3 or 12 kHz) spectral plots (B) For surface broadband measurements: 1. 300 Hz to 6 kHz (or 12 kHz) spectral plots 2. 300 Hz to 3 kHz spectral plots (C) For underground narrowband measurements : 1.
