THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. Between March and June 1962, the privilege of holding a Carnegie Corporation Fellowship enabled R. A. L. Black to travel extensively in the northeastern and western U.S. and in Canada, seeing mining schools, mining research establishments and a cross-section of the American and Canadian mining industry. Visits were paid to 12 university mining schools, 7 research establishments and 19 mining operations. The author had previously spent two months in Britain in a similar manner and eventually returned to his home in South Africa after a short period studying mining problem in Australia. Thus, although the following remarks are mainly concerned with the educational problems of mining in North America, a comparison of impressions of American and Canadian conditions could be made with impressions gained from first-hand experience of other mining centers in the English-speaking world. The conclusion was reached that the problems and conditions of mining, research and mining education are very similar in all areas visited.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. Until well into the 20th century, most construction work was performed under the auspices of a master builder or in a manner that would be described today as design-build. In addition, many civil engineers served as ?interns? under the tutelage of a master builder in order to learn how to design and construct a certain type of structure. This was certainly the case for tunneling projects with various individuals having been identified as tunneling experts as a result of successfully completed projects The master builder approach began to change in the early 1900s to a model that would be referred to today as design-bid-build. A design-bid-build approach to project procurement gives the owner more control over the final product and al-lows the contractor to know exactly what is expected of them before the work is constructed. As a result of this transition in project procurement, civil engineering schools placed a greater emphasis on the training of ?design? professionals. This article will document how the training of tunnel design professionals progressed within the United States. Although it is difficult to generalize about the hundreds of tunnels that were constructed in the first four decades of the 20th century, there is one project that stands out as having resulted in a university program related directly to tunneling and that is the Chicago Subway. During a visit to the United States in 1938, Dr. Karl Terzaghi met a student named Ralph Peck who was then studying at Harvard University in a pro-gram established by Arthur Casagrande. Shortly thereafter, Terzaghi traveled to Chicago for a lecture and was asked to consult on the Chicago subway project that was then under construction. The Chicago subway was being constructed in clay, and the owners were worried about possible settlements to nearby buildings. Terzaghi asked Peck to serve as his field engineer for that project. Thus was established one of the most productive relationships in the history of civil engineering in the United States. Peck, who would become Dr. Peck, moved to Chicago in 1939 to participate in an extensive research project that con-tinued until subway construction was halted in 1941 because of World War II. During that time, the cost of subway construction in Chicago was reduced substantially as a result of Peck?s observations and Terzaghi?s recommendations. In fact, it was reported that subway construction in Chicago cost less than one-half of similar projects in London even though the clay in London is considerably stiffer compared to Chicago. Upon the completion of his work on the Chicago Subway, Peck accepted a professorship with the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana.

"At the request of Philip S. Hoyt, the Eagle Mountain fluorspar deposits in section 35, block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, were examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines during March 1943: As a result of this examination; a preliminary program of trenching, sampling and core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was begun in. June 1943.4/ Eight deposits were explored.The Federal Geological Survey mapped the properties and furnished geologic information throughout the program, while the Texas .Bureau of Economic Geology6/ made preliminary maps that facilitated planning the exploratory work on section 35.The eight deposits explored by the Bureau of Mines are in block 68, Texas & Pacific Railroad Survey No. 9, Hudspeth County, Tex., approximately 7-1/2 miles south of. Hot Wells and 12-1/2 miles south of Allamoore, which is 10 miles west of Van Horn and 20 miles east of Gierra Blanco on U. S. Highway 80(fig. 1). A graded gravel road, built by the Public Roads Administration, leads from Hot Wells to the deposits in section 35, and there are unimproved roads, passable,by automobile, to all the other deposits.Carload shipments can be made to and from Hot Wells on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and complete railroad facilities are available at Allamoore on the Texas & Pacific Railroad.Van Horn and Sierra Blanca are the only local source of labor and. supplies. The prevailing wage for common labor is 60 cents an hour. Living accommodations are obtainable in Horn and Sierra Blanca.No electric power lines pass near the deposits. Diesel and gasoline motors are employed to furnish power for mining and milling operations.Two recently 'drilled water wells on section 35 furnish water for the mill. Other wells will be drilled if the present supply is inadequate for prolonged Peak operation.The properties lie in the foothills on the northeast side of the Eagle Mountains at 5,500 feet altitude. The Eagle Mountain Range rises sharply from a broad, flat valley known as Eagle Flat. Eagle Peak, the highest in the range, has an altitude of 7,510 feet. In the vicinity of the fluorspar deposits the topography is moderately reliefs ranging from 50 to 300 feet."

"Using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy we have carried out a systematic study of the measurement of concentrations of organic free radicals in freeze-dried lung tissue. Sixty-six tissue samples were obtained from the National Coal Workers' Autopsy Study (NCWAS). The samples were characterized in terms of the concentration per gram of the free radicals, and examined in relationship to the histopathological parameters such as age, numbers of years in the mining atmosphere, the degree of disease, and smoking history. Preliminary results indicate a positive correlation between the free radicals in the lung tissue and the severity of pneumoconiosis.IntroductionThis paper summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of the concentration of organic free radicals in the freeze-dried lung tissue of autopsied coal miners. This work was undertaken because it is well known that most coals contain carbon-centered organic free radi¬cals,(1,2) and recent studies from our laboratories indicated that reactive free radicals might play a role in the biochemi¬cal mechanism of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) (3) Thus we obtained 144 lung-tissue samples from the Nation¬al Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Morgantown. The samples came from the data bank of the National Coal Workers' Autopsy Study (NCWAS). This selection was unique because fairly detailed histopathologi¬cal information was available for each sample.Other recent studies in this field are those of Ohta et al (4) who conducted ESR measurements on black dust deposited in autopsied human lungs, but no coal miner was included therein. Earlier Retcofsky (2) had examined one lung-tissue sample via ESR spectroscopy and had concluded that the free radicals in the lung tissue reflected simply the fusain (narrow component) ESR signals. The present study was thus undertaken to complement the earlier work (2-4) and the results indicate a positive correlation with the disease severity fairly strongly."

After the close of the Revolution, settlers began to pour over the mountains, to settle in the western parts of Pennsylvania, of Virginia, to move down the Ohio into Kentucky, and in the late seventeen-eighties to settle on "the Indian side" of the river, now Ohio. With the growth of population the interest in coal increased and it was not long before the production of coal west of the mountains was larger than that east of them. Foreign nations, too, became interested in the young republic and in 1783, at the instance of the Swedish government S. A. Hermelin, an engineer, visited this country to investigate its iron industry. He made a very interesting report, not published until 1931, in which he gave many details of the iron plants in the eastern United States; apparently he was not west of the mountains, but was well informed about conditions there. He says, "that some coal near the first branches of the Schuylkill River has been mined and utilized by the blacksmiths," referring, of course, to anthracite; again that "coal mines have also been worked for several years near Pittsburg," and that "great supplies of iron ore are available at the Ohio Falls and further to the west, at Coney Creek, a part of the Green River, where there is also coal."' In 1788, Dr. Johann David Schoepf, who came to this country with the Hessian troops, visited Pittsburgh. He was an intelligent man and acquainted to some extent with minerals and methods of working them. From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

INTRODUCTION Preparation of this article, at the request of the Committee on papers, has been undertaken in the hope that it may stir up helpful discussion and constructive criticism. The Canadian mining industry is in the dumps and there is no use trying to deny the fact; nor does it help to say that other industries are in as bad or a worse condition. Let us face the situation honestly and see just how serious it is. The entire financial and industrial world is in a state of depression. The gravity of the case is no doubt exaggerated by contrast with the wave of optimism and false prosperity which pre-ceded it. The prevailing gloom and pessimism are just as irrational as was the former super-optimism. As far as we mining engineers are concerned, the causes are quite beyond our control, and it is the effect upon our own industry which interests us most. This effect is an accumulation of mineral products with consequent depression in price to a point where profits have almost, if not quite, disappeared. Whether this accumulation of stocks is the result of over-production or under-consumption is difficult to say, but it would seem likely that there is a combination of the two. The introduction of selective flotation has brought about a large increase in the production of zinc, a moderate increase in the production of lead, and a comparatively small increase in copper. It has turned relatively small mines into great producers, as in the case of the Sullivan, revived expiring mines like La Cananea, and brought-in new ones like Flin Flon

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

"Originally developed in 1993, LaModel has aided mining engineers and researchers alike in improving the design and safety of underground single- and multiple-seam mining operations (Heasley, 1998). Through the years (Heasley, 2011), the use and capabilities of the LaModel program have grown immensely while adapting to ground control concerns and problems within the mining industry. Presently, MSHA specifically mentions the use of LaModel for the analysis of, “complex non-typical roof control plans,” defined as either room-and-pillar retreat mining greater than 1000 feet, bump- or bounce-prone mines, or other criteria considered unusual by the District Manager (Stricklin, 2013).With an ever increasing number of users and an increase in available solution options and complex analyses, there is now a significant demand for better education and training in the practical application and detailed analysis using LaModel. This paper presents the development of an electronic user’s manual and comprehensive online training course created in an open online learning environment in order to better inform and train industry professionals as well as engineering students and new users. The development of both the user’s manual and online training course will ultimately increase the ground control design effectiveness of mining engineers, leading to safer and more productive mine designs.INTRODUCTIONOver the past 20 years, mining engineers and researchers have used the LaModel program for improving the design and safety of single- and multiple-seam mining operations. LaModel uses a laminated, displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element method which simplifies the overburden into a stack of frictionless homogeneous laminations and limits the detailed analysis to the seam itself. This approach is fundamentally simpler than either finite-element, finite-difference, or discrete-element approaches; and, therefore, the program provides a significant reduction in computational time and efficiently calculates the displacements, stresses, pillar safety factors, multiple-seam interactions, subsidence, etc. for thin-bedded deposits such as coal, salt, potash, limestone, etc. (Heasley and Salamon, 1996; Heasley and Agioutantis, 2001). The laminated overburden model in LaModel is different than previous homogeneous elastic formulations and more realistically represents the natural flexibilities of the stratified sedimentary overburden typically associated with coal seams (Heasley, 2008)."

When compared to average shale composition, average coal is enriched in sulfur and selenium, has similar amounts of arsenic, beryllium, lead, antimony and molybdenum, and is depleted in at least 26 other elements. Within a coalfield, or region, some coals are enriched (10X average shale) in silver, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, germanium, molybdenum, nickel, lead, selenium, uranium, and zinc. Important factors controlling element distributions in coal include geochemical conditions (primarily pH) in the peat swamp, composition and depositional environment of coal roof rocks, thermal maturity (rank), nature and intensity of any epigenetic mineralization, composition of ground waters that come in contact with the coal, and degree of weathering.

Bauxite was discovered in the Springvale district in 1916. About 16, 000 tons was mined in the period 1916 to 1922, but no bauxite mining has been done since that time. The Bureau of Mines explored for bauxite in the district from September 5 to November 18, 1943. During the life of the project, the Bureau of Mines obtained mineral exploration agreements covering a total of 11,330 acres from 50 property owners. A total of 388 holes were drilled on five of these properties and 164 samples were taken and analyzed. The Springvale bauxite district includes an area of about 30 square miles in the northwestern part of Randolph County, Ga. The village of Springvale is in the west central part of the district, and Cuthbert is 8 miles southeast of it (fig. 1).

Branch and needle-shaped intermctallic compounds of iron, silicon and aluminum normally exist in the molten aluminum. If a suitable amount of manganese metal is added into molten aluminum, the shape of the intermallie compound particlcs may become lumpish and spherical. According to the difference in electric and magnetic properties of these impurity particles and molten aluminum, these impurity intermctallie compound particles can be separated by applying an alternating magnetic field. In this experiment the alternating magnetic field was formed by a "C" type loop with AC (50Hz) current. The inner vacuum of the fireclay refractory separator is 25>< 15" 130mm3 with a lateral baffle inside. The separator was put into the interspace of the "C" type loop. It was found that the longer the separation time, the larger the amount transferred of impurities. The amount of transferred impurities increases with the increase of separation time and intensity of magnetic field. The addition of manganese metal enhanees signifieantly the efficiency of impurity separation.

"The literature contains many cases where the shape of hydrocyclone efficiency curves vary from the ideal “S” shape. These often appear as changes in slope, or inflections. These inflections can be divided into two categories: “coarse” inflections, which are caused by differences in the density of the minerals being separated, and “fine” inflections, for which there are a number of competing hypotheses concerning their cause. The existing literature addresses either the fine inflection or the coarse inflection, but no studies have reported both types of inflection occurring at once in a single hydrocyclone test. This paper presents hydrocyclone results from both in-plant studies and laboratory experiments that show both coarse and fine inflections. The industrial significance of both types of inflections is discussed. Hydrocyclone efficiency curves show the probability of any given particle reporting to the hydrocyclone underflow as a function of its size. Selectivity functions, S(d), are used to represent the fraction of the feed material in size fraction “d” that reports to the hydrocyclone underflow. Plotting this selectivity function against particle size leads to the standard S-shaped efficiency curve shown in Fig. 1. In the “uncorrected” curve, the tail of the curve does not go through 0%, because a portion of the solids are bypassing classification. This happens as a result of their being carried along by the water, and is most important for the finest particles. The curve can be “corrected” based on the fraction of the feed water that reports to the underflow, represented by the bypass fraction, Rf. The corrected curve then normally passes through 0%, as shown in Fig. 1.The act of correcting the curve shifts the value of the d50 size, which is the size that has an equal probability of reporting to either the overflow or to the underflow. Correcting the curve to account for the bypass fraction makes it easier to compare cyclone performance under conditions that cause the quantity of water in the underflow to change, but that do not alter the actual corrected cut size (d50c).The corrected efficiency curve can be expressed closely by equations such as Plitt (1976):"

"FOLLOWING the Leduc discovery •by Imperial Oil in 1947, The California Standard Company began to acquire land in the area immediately west of Edmonton and in line with the Leduc reef trend (Figure 1).The California Standard Winter-burn Province No. 1 in Lsd. 10, Section 4, Township 53, Range 25, West 4th, which was spudded, on the basis of a seismic anomaly, in December, 1949, failed to find reef. This well was located on the eastern .edge of a large land block which California Standard and Imperial Oil had pooled as a joint venture, with California Standard a:s the operator (Figure 2).The culmination •of an extensive exploration and land aquisition programme was the drilling of the California Standard-Acheson Province No. 1 well .in Lsd. 13, Section 2, Township 53, Range 26, West 4th. On August 24th, 1950, a drill stem test was run in the D-3 zone which had been encountered at 4,969 feet, and a flow rate of 702 barrels per day •of 36° gravity oil was obtained. Just previously, Imperial Oil had completed a similar programme in the Stony Plain Reserve with the swabbing-in of Imperial Stony Plain No. 1. These two discoveries set off a drilling programme to determine the extent and value of the oil accumulation.Subsequent drilling of wells some successful .and others not by several other companies as well as California Standard bias, .to date, still left much to be determined as to the approximate delineation of the productive limits of the Ache-son-Stony Plain area. However, to August 31st, 1951, there were twenty-one D-3 producers north of the reserve and three in the Stony Plain Reserve."
