It has been found that the MnO content of a slag decreases sharply when direct current is applied to a 1T1£tal-Slagsystem consisting of liquid Mn-Si-Ccsat metals and MnO-SiO2-CaO-AI203 slag in graphite crucibles. This paper reports a preliminary investigation into the electrochemical effects of direct current on the metal-slag system, the silicon content of the metals, and the MnO content of the slag. The results show that, when a direct current of 7 A is maintained, the MnO content of a metal containing 10 to 11 per cent silicon by weight is reduced rapidly from 26,5 to 17,2 per cent by weight. This reduction seems to proceed further when the process is continued. When the direct current and the voltage are kept constant at TA and 4 V respectively, the MnO content of a metal containing 1 to 2 per cent silicon by weight is reduced to 1 from 25 per cent by weight, which results in a manganese yield of 96 per cent.

The Mary Arnold Mining Co. in 194.3 owned 292 acre s of mineral land in Christian County, Mo., and was one of two companies with milling facilities in southern-central Missouri. Production from this property between 19.37 and 1941 amounted to 1,718 tons of zinc in the form of zinc concentrate. Because of the urgent war requirements for additional zinc and the existing facilities for treatment of zinc-lead ores at these mines, in the winter of 1943-44, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposits by churn drilling in an endeavor to outline enough ore to maintain production of zinc from this district. Five holes aggregating 1,043 feet were bored.

Open-cut method is most widely used for shallow utility lines installation. In urban areas, unexpected utility lines buried underground potentially turn open-cut construction into a highly risky operation, increasing the construction cost while presenting additional safety hazards. Examples include: breaking existing water main leads to flooding the downtown area; hitting an unexpected gas line causes an explosion. To prevent those accidents, the current practice is to stake out the underground utility lines before the open-cut construction based on the as-built information collected from various utility companies and government agencies. However, the as-built information is not always complete and accurate. To verify the locations of some important utility lines and protect them against damages caused by open-cut construction, new techniques and technologies are used but have their limitations in revealing underground utility lines, such as hydro vacuum method and ground penetration radars (GPR). The emerging technology of ultra-wide band (UWB) radar holds the potential to provide a cost-effective, non-destructive detection method. In this paper, a critical review of current practices and established methodologies is given. The functionality and working mechanism of UWB radar technologies are described. Application potential in open-cut construction is demonstrated by conducting lab experiments. Testing set-ups for detecting unexpected utility lines in soil along with preliminary results are presented. The effects of soil moisture content on the detection range are discussed. Research findings are summarized and constraints are discussed in conclusions.

Increasingly stringent global environmental regulations are forcing steel producers to continually improve the efficiency of sinter waste gas treatment. With the Selective Waste Gas Recirculation (SWGR) system from Primetals Technologies, lower production costs can be achieved and the size of downstream waste gas cleaning units can be reduced for investment savings. SWGR features the extraction and reuse of hot sinter off gas from selected wind boxes along the sinter strand, which contributes to improved energy efficiency and off gas treatment in the sintering process. ALTHOUGH bad grammar, the above query is probably, at the present moment, good sense. Why was the Institute started and why does it continue to exist? The small group of men who worked out the original idea felt keenly the necessity of mining engineers and metallurgists getting together in order to discuss their professional problems. That necessity still exists but it does not strike the present generation of engineers so keenly because they have always had the Institute: they do not know what it is to be without it. The Institute is a great graduate school of mining and metallurgy. All of its members who have something to say worth saying are the teachers; all the rest may be learners or critics. No university or technical school can match the experience and information which the authors of its papers possess, no institution of learning has a body of potential listeners so extensive and so vitally interested.

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

A new optical sorting system based on a complex image analysis and high definition imaging has been developed by Comex. The image analysis is based on high definition cameras of different types and advanced filtration tools for verification of waste particles. Different mineral properties are used to identify the processed material. The system is further combined with a high speed rejection mechanism based on FPGA technology and operating in real time conditions. This provides a minimal error when removing waste particles from the sorted material.

Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.

This paper describes a mineral dressing process for the upgrading of tin ores. The process described is called 'agglomeration' and. is similar in many respects to flotation. Many variables have been examined experimentally both on batch and continuous operations and are reported upon herein... Using a Mt. Pleasant tin ore, assaying 0.5% Sn, an upgrading to 8% Sn, with a recovery of 95% could be obtained by this process.

The microstructural relationships in dolomitic fluxed taconite pellets were studied. The influence of basicity (in the range 0.75 to 2.1) and firing temperature (to 1340°C) on the grain structure, macrostructure, and mineralogical phase relationships are described. Extensive slag bonding of hematite grains begins at temperatures between 1220 and 1230°C, and results in fundamental changes in grain structure. Successive temperature increases result in little change in grain structure until 1340°C, when extensive coalescence of the hematite grains begins.' Increasing flux additions have little effect on grain structure but greatly influence pore character. The compressive strength decreases with increasing flux addition, increases with increasing firing temperature, and is related to the macrostructure of the pellet. The compositions of the slag phases are represented on the CaO-Fe2O3-SiO2 phase diagram, and the compositional path of slag development is described.

These notes are based on observations made while on a recent trip through the West, for the purpose of studying the practical operation of the ball-mill. The writer takes this opportunity to express his thanks for courtesies extended at the many plants visited as well as for the valuable data received: While there are several types of ball-mill on the market, particular attention will here be given to the diaphragm type, as the open-trunnion type, especially the conical mill, has been thoroughly discussed in the Transactions. There is a prevailing impression that the ball-mill is a recent development; however, ball-mills were used extensively in Montana and other western states for crushing ores for concentration as far back as 1808. Its present prominence is due in part to its recent successful application by one of the large copper companies. Without any reference to dry grinding, the first successful ball-mill for wet crushing, which is still in operation, was built 10 years ago.l This mill, designed by Erminio Ferraris for crushing Sardinian ores for concentration, is of more than passing interest. It embodies the peripheral discharge with grates, large forged-steel balls, and the principal features of the modern ball-mill. The results approach present-day practice, the chief differences being that the mechanical construction has been improved in the modern types. Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

"A laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the applicability of a radium selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The results of this work showed the ion exchange complexer, Dowex XFS 43230.00, to be efficient in removing radium from contaminated water of uranium mining operations with the ultimate loading capacity of the resin on one type of water treated being determined as approximately 1,600 Bq/cm3 of new resin. Although this resin has potential application for treatment of effluent streams in uranium operations it has been identified that the resin efficiency and capacity is directly related to the chemistry of the water being treated and site-specific testwork is required in order to establish reliable design data for full-scale operations.IntroductionThe possible applicability of a radium-selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents had been identified and discussed as a possible alternative to present radium removal methods during a review of disposal technology options for the National Uranium Tailings Program of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources(1). Work by other workers(2.3) had shown the complexer to be very efficient in removing radium from contaminated water. Also, plant trials on contaminated minewater at the Mt. Taylor uranium mine in New Mexico is reported to have shown the resin complexer to be efficient under plant operating conditions.As a result, a laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the suitability of this resin for Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. (MCEL) under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."

Experiments were carried out by adding CaF2 as catalyst in a Ar atmosphere to study the isothermal reduction kinetics of vanadium titano-magnetite carbon composite pellets under high temperature in the range from1473 to 1673K. By analyzing reduction mechanism, it was found that the rate controlling step was gas diffusion, and the activation energy was 178.39kJ•mol-1 without adding any catalysts. Adding CaF2 of 3% to vanadium titano-magnetite carbon composite pellets can decrease the apparent activation energy of reduction, and the decrease extent was 14.95kJ•mol-1. In addition, temperature is an important factor influencing on reaction rate.

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.

St. Marys Cement Company operates two cement plants in Southern Ontario, Canada. The original plant, located at St. Marys, a town 20 miles north of London, Ontario, began operations in 1912. A second plant, located at Bowmanville, Ontario, 40 miles north east of Toronto, began operations in 1967. In June 1973, St. Marys Cement began feasibility studies of modernizing their wet process plant at St. Marys. Over its 61 year life, this plant had been expanded from 335 m. tons per day (375 s. tons per day) to 2000 tpd (2200 s. tons per day), with all the original equipment retired several years ago. The objectives of the feasibility study were to develop a conceptual plan for a dry process plant and to de-, fine the appropriate process method and equipment. This study proceded along four fundamental fronts: a) How could the clay raw material, a glacial till with up to 20% boulder content, be processed in dry form and beneficiated? b) Were the raw materials suitable for the most efficient form of dry process kiln, the 4-stage preheater? If a 4-stage preheater kiln is selected should it utilize a precalciner? c) What type of clinker cooler should be used? d) What environmental constraints would be imposed on this plant and how can they be reconciled with capital and operating limitations? During the feasibility stage, pilot plant work was done on two possible solutions to the clay problem, operating plants in Europe were visited and discussions held with kiln and mill vendors.

M ETHODS by which Americanization is developed among the foreign workers at the mines in the United States, with particular reference to mines of the Pennsylvania coal region, were discussed in a most constructive way at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute. Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute's Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."
