"A preliminary examination of the Bi-Metallic molybdenum prospect was made in October 1944, as a result of which it was recommended that a trench exploration project be undertaken on the property. This report presents the information obtained from project work done during June 1945.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lanes has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and. economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due S. H. Lorain, chief, Albany Division, Mining Branch, for aid in preparing the report.The property is situated in the NW1/4, sec. 26, T. 39 N., R. 29 E. about 21 miles northeast of Tonasket. Tonasket (population 643), the nearest town, is a way point on a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. The prospect is reached by a good gravel road through Havillah to Vincent's ranch, about 3 miles northeast of Havillah. From the ranch, an abandoned dirt road extends to the portal of the Moly alit, about 1 mile distant. The mine road could be kept open without difficulty if properly graded and surfaced."

A rapid method of determining natural fracture trends in collieries has been developed. The method will yield information that is precise enough to permit fracture domain boundaries to be delineated in a coal seam. Instead of a survey of cleat trends in a colliery taking several man-weeks or even man-months, a reconnaissance survey can be carried out in only a few man-days. At each of a sequence of sampling sites along a traverse, five measurements of trend are recorded for each set of fracture directions. A sequential plot of the medians of each fracture set is then made manually underground or by a computer in the mine office. Changes in fracture pattern can be detected easily in colliery development work if a geologist visits advancing faces regularly, and forecasts can be made about the likelihood of forthcoming faults and dykes. A full description of this method is given in Shepherd and Fisher (1981). The concept of mapping fractures rapidly in a colliery is based on using a geological traverse (Compton, 1962), along which observations can be made at chosen, regular intervals. The technique has been widely used for surface mapping across outcrops and in follow-up work in photogeological studies (Hepworth and Kennerley, 1970). In these cases, the geologist surveys the traverse line as mapping proceeds. In a colliery, however, ready-made traverse lines already exist in panels and along main roadways, often in several directions. It is thus possible to traverse a colliery in different directions and record the fracture trends at intervals, generating a reconnaissance fracture map. This can also be done on a continuing basis as mine development takes place. Generally, a sampling traverse should be longer than 0.5 km with sampling sites at relatively close-spaced intervals along the traverse. For example, in room-and-pillar mines pillars are commonly formed on 40-m centers and the sampling sites can then be arranged at 20-m intervals [(Fig. 1)]. The sites might have to be closer together for mines known to have bad mining conditions. The predominant fracture trend is normally the face cleat and the subordinate trend is the butt cleat (McCulloch et al.. 1974). Various changes can occur in the cleat or joint pattern: the face and butt sets may disappear or an entirely new set or sets may appear. Therefore, it is best to record all prominent fracture sets. Sometimes there is only one; in other cases there may be as many as three or more. An odd number of measurements of each fracture set are made (generally five or more) to enable the median value to be determined easily. The median value can be plotted underground using graph paper or a computer plot can be made in the laboratory or mine office [(Fig. 2)]. The sequential linked median (SLIME) plot draws the median trend for each sampling site as a unit line segment. The segments from successive sampling sites can be connected together to form a long chain [(Fig. 2A)]. The needle plot, on the other hand, draws a straight line to represent the traverse and then plots out the median trend for each sampling site [(Fig. 2B)]. The SLIME plot is better for visual display, as it highlights small irregularities and gross changes in trend. However, some work is required to relate the individual segments to their site location along a traverse. In this respect, the needle plot is more convenient because each segment -can be plotted-at a point corresponding to its location. Also, there is precise match-up if needle plots of face and butt cleat are compared. A description and listing of the SLIME program is given by White et al. (1981). An example of the use of this method is given for Wallsend Borehole colliery in New South Wales (Australia) [(Fig. 2)], where domains II and IV are associated with mining hazards. Domain II is coincident with a normal fault of 2.6-m throw, and domain IV with a basic dyke 12 m thick. These hazards were approached driving in a southwesterly direction, and a pronounced change in trend of the cleat to a northwesterly direction occurred at a distance of approximately 45 m from each one. The northwestern joint trend is parallel to that of the dyke and fault, and it occurs at a higher frequency close to these structures. The association of a particular joint set with faults has been found elsewhere (Shepherd and Creasey, 1979). The two minor cleat direction changes within domain V are narrow joint zones that are less than 5 m wide. The fracture trends derived from a SLIME traverse can be verified by collecting larger quantities of data at selected sites, as shown in the balloon density (rose) plots depicted in [Fig. 2C]. This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

"SynopsisSouth Africa recently announced a resurgence in its commercial nuclear power programme. The implications for the development of the necessary high-level manpower within South Africa’s tertiary educational system and its national research and development (R&D) capacity in materials science and engineering, as well as in other engineering disciplines, are placed into perspective. An organized national process of developing this manpower by moving away from the previously high-risk and costly ’large programmes’ to rather a selection of ‘small and better’ research projects and a redefinition of what constitutes ‘nuclear materials’ are proposed as parts of this strategy.IntroductionSince 2008, and more particularly in 2014/2015, South Africa has woken up to the fact that significant steps need to be taken to ensure sufficient electricity generating capacity for the future, even beyond the coal-fired stations at Medupi and Kusile currently under construction. It is, therefore, encouraging to see some active large-scale wind farms in the Eastern Cape near Jeffrey’s Bay, in the Couga area, and others in the Western Cape already in operation. In addition, many solar energy projects are also progressing from the small localized scale to larger programmes in the Northern Cape, which may contribute some capacity on a national basis. South Africa needs to tap into its renewable resources of wind and solar much more, but will these projects solve the country’s long-term industrial needs? Unfortunately not. One cannot run mines and trains on solar cells. Industry needs reliable baseload capacity, and with very limited easily accessible hydrocapacity this leaves really only coal, possibly natural gas, and nuclear power as options. South Africa’s current over-reliance of about 90% on coal–fired power, however, places it in an internationally vulnerable position, and diversification into a more equitable energy mix should be a national priority for the medium to long term. South Africa cannot significant climate change confronting the human race, as the IPCC cautioned in 2013, and will have to adjust its future energy reliance to a more balanced combination of sources."

The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and 'the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.

In ,1993, the WMC Resources Ltd.-owned Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, underwent a capacity upgrade. This capacity increase was offset by .air quality control restrictions limiting the smelter's availability to 80%. As the direct. result of this limitation, WMC Resources Ltd commissioned a double absorption contact ,acid ,plant for the desulphurisation of furnace waste gas in August 1996. The history and the impact of the acid plant on S02 emissions and air quality is reviewed. General descriptions of the other aspects of the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter's Environmental Project are also included in the paper. Information on 'the design features? and operating practices that relate to or contrast with practices at operations visited by KNS personnel prior to acid plant commissioning provide the paper's focus. Smelter operation has changed markedly from unstable operation prior to 1997 to continuous" operation with little down time due to mechanical or process failures resulting in increased smelter availability to more than 90%

THE Executive Board of The American Engineering Council met in Pittsburgh, May 26 and 27. Its actions on the licensing of engineers and on the Employment Bureau are printed at length elsewhere in this issue. The board announced plans purposing the solution of the national problems of water power and forestry, upon which "the industrial development of the nation and the standard of living of future generations largely depends. The whole Federal water-power situation is in so critical a condition that immediate constructive action by the Government to conserve the public interests, involving vast consequences of economic and Federal policy, is necessary. After a long discussion during which the water-power problem as it affects Government reorganization was reviewed and Henry Ford's Muscle Shoal's plan was discussed, the board decided to lay the entire question before President Harding. A national movement to conserve the nation's forests, in which engineers, the U. S. Forestry Service, the forestry services of the states, universities and technical schools, and other groups such as the farmers, the railroads, and lumbermen, shall pool their efforts, was set in motion by the engineers. The work will be in charge of a Reforestation Committee of the Council, headed by Charles H. MacDowell of Chicago. Mov-ing picture interests will be asked to aid. The board pledged its support to President Harding in his plan for Government reorganization. In adopting the report of its Committee on Public Affairs, headed by J. Parke Channing of New York, the Executive Board of the council determined, in the event of the failure of the President's efforts to bring about greater economy and ffieciency in national affairs by regrouping of Federal functions, to press independ-ently a nation-wide movement for the establishment of a Department of Public Works. Progress in a national survey of the two-shift day in American industries was reported by the Council's Committee on Work Periods in Continuous Industries. This survey, called the most extensive of its kind ever made, has been in progress for more than a year; and purposes an exposition of industrial conditions which shall form a basis for establishing the relative merits of three shifts of eight hours each and two shifts of twelve hours each.

In 1948, it became clear that the ventilation system of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines, would be inadequate for future operations. The,paper describes in detail the process of designing an entirely new ventilation system for a large underground mining operation. The system was based on a single new upcast airway to be located on the boundary of the two properties, which were to be ventilated in parallel as two separate ventilating districts.From calculations of resistance, and assessments of future air requirements, the duties of a new exhaust fan to be located on the collar of the upcast airway were specified as 700,000 cubic feet per minute at 2·6 in. w.g. total pressure for initial operation in 1953 increasing to a maximum of 900,000 c.f.m. at 3·6 in. w:g. total pressure ten years later. The economic size of the new airway was calculated from a consideration of the first thirty years operation of the system, and it was decided to provide a 20 ft. diameter concrete-lined shaft.The new system went into operation five years after the initial planning, and the effect of the difference between actual and predicted rates and distribution or production are discussed. The final result was entirely satisfactory.INTRODUCTIONThe first proposal for an investigation of The Zinc Corporation Limited-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited ventilation system with a view to putting it on a proper technical basis was made in 1938. A new Main Shaft was then being sunk, and it was decided to postpone the enquiry until this had been completed to No. 14 Level, when operations would be temporarily suspended and the shaft commence to operate as a major airway. "The purpose of this study is to understand how ore loss and dilution affect the mine call factor, with the aim of subsequently improving the quality of ore mined and fed to the mill. It was necessary to know the relationship between ore mined and delivered for processing in order for the mine to operate efficiently. A review of the literature suggested the mine-to-mill integration approach as a standard intervention to address declining mine call factors. A case study was undertaken at a gold mine in the Free State on the influence of the fragment size distribution on ‘free gold’, the effect of ore loss and dilution on the mill efficiency, and time tracking of ore movement from source to the plant. The study revealed that fragmentation, underground accumulation of ore, and dilution have a significant influence on the mine call factor and mine output. It was difficult to quantify the total ore loss due to the time lag between mining and milling, which is extremely variable, when estimating the mine process inventory. However, it was possible to estimate the total dilution with some degree of precision by analysing the daily blast and head grades. It is therefore recommended that mines accept that some gold loss and dilution will always occur during blasting and transport of broken ore, and this loss must be minimized.IntroductionThe mining of high gold grades is obviously very beneficial for the economic viability of an operation, but optimum recovery of the product is required to maximize profits (Chapman and Bindoff, 2010, p. 13). Although integrating these two requirements is very difficult, due to the various activities occurring between mining and processing, it is indispensable. The main driver of this integration is the impact that different ore types and characteristics have on head grade. According to Isokangas et al. (2012, p. 871), mining and processing operations involve a series of well-defined sequential stages that are complementary in an efficiently operating mine, with the performance of one operation affecting that of another. An attempt to optimize each function separately without considering the whole extraction process will not result in the optimum efficiency of the entire mine. Several researchers have developed a proven methodology for revealing these inefficiencies (Dance et al., 2006, p. 1)."

EVEN though most of the program of the joint meeting at Easton, Pa., on Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. was devoted to the interests of combustion engineers rather than to coal-mining engineers, nevertheless the A.I.M.E. Coal Division was well represented, with 83, or close to one third of those in attendance giving this as their affiliation. The fuels division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers had 108 representatives, and an equal number reported no society affiliation. Added to the men's total registration was that of some twenty ladies so the total attendance was in the neighborhood of 325, exceeding that of the last two joint meetings, at Birmingham and Columbus, and equaling the 1938 crowd at Chicago.

"IntroductionIN UNDERGROUND mining operations, the mine hoist has become one of the most important and one of the most expensive single pieces of equipment. As the means of transporting men and materials to the face, broken ore to the mill, and waste to the dump, it is often the very lifeline of a mine and must operate with dependability and efficiency or the whole operation will suffer. The mine hoist has become synonymous with safety. In few other types of mechanical equipment do so many men so frequently and completely place their lives. In Canada, more has probably been done to assure safe hoisting than in most other countries, but, unfortunately, this has resulted, in many cases, in the mines having to pay a high price for equipment. Hoist manufacturers have carried out much research in recent years in the endeavour to keep down these costs and at the same time maintain or improve the efficiency and safety of their products. Broadly classified, the bases for design research are dependability, efficiency, safety, and first cost.Probably the greatest single factor influencing the design of mine hoists was the introduction of electric motor drives. It was not until about 1905 that an effective start was made in the development of electric mine hoists, and then only with machines of small size. From that time on, however, progress was rapid, as may be gauged from the fact that by 1910 one large group of mines in Johannesburg had in use, or on order, fifty-four three-phase hoists and four Ward-Leonard. type hoists."

The results of laboratory, large-scale laboratory and commercial scale investigations regarding the process of slag melts cleaning by oxidizing-reduction gas mixtures with a wide range of Po2 and the use of matte of various compositions as an extracting phase are presented. The copper, nickel and cobalt behavior during the cleaning process has been studied based on SEM and x-ray Microprobe of the quenched slag melts. The general cleaning mechanisms have been found. On the basis of the obtained data the most efficient cleaning methods have been proposed.

When water enters the EAF, some chemically dissociates to H2 while some remains as H2O vapor. Depending on operating conditions the levels of combustible gases (CO and H2) and H2O are continually changing throughout the course of any individual heat and on a heat-toheat basis. The EFSOP® system has been implemented in more than 80 installations as a powerful tool to reduce furnace operation costs but with water detection technology the off gas technology is a valuable solution to improve safety. This paper describes the latest results when using Tenova Goodfellow’s new standalone water detection technology that for the first time provides real-time analysis of both H2O vapor and H2 from start-to-end of a heat. It involves a newly designed water cooled probe and heated line that eliminates condensation during off-gas sampling and an analyzer equipped with a proprietary system for analyzing both H2O vapor and H2.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

Due to the known disadvantages of the use of iron silicate slag in the nickel converting stage, i.e., high metal losses, high magnetite content, and low fixation of impurities in the slag, the development of the new proposed "ferrous calcium silicate slag" for smelting and converting processes of nickel is very promising. Hence, considering the successful experimental results of using CaO base slag for the nickel smelting process, a study based on a detailed comparison for the phase equilibrium, and the minor elements distribution between the Ni3S2-FeS matte with either FeOx-CaO or FeOX-Si02 base slag was investigated. The main results are summarized as: no difference in the nickel losses between both slags was found at high nickel content in the matte, and the fractional distribution analysis for arsenic and antimony pointed out their preferential fixation in the calcium ferrite slag rather than in the iron silicate slag. Considering the energy and pollution issues, the technical feasibility of using calcium ferrite slag in a converting process of the Bessemer matte will have a prominent future for the nickel industry.

"Seafloor massive sulphide (SMS) deposits, similar in composition and genesis to terrestrial volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, are generally found in volcanic seafloor environments along major rifts and mid-ocean ridges. Theyare associated to extensional tectonic settings such as nascent-arc, rifted-arc and back-arc environments. They may represent important source of base metals and be an alternative to on-land resources. Seafloor massive sulphide deposits have particular mineralogical compositions and textural features differentiating them from terrestrial one. When extracted from salty water and exposed to the ambient air, massive sulphide samples strongly oxidize and soon become covered by thin layers of iron, copper and zinc rich sulphates and oxides, as well as elemental sulphur. The textural properties vary according to the degree of maturity and the sample position within the hydrothermal deposit. The total porosity of that type of samples is also relatively high, especially for immature samples such as black smoker chimneys, which can reach 15% of total porosity. Because the secondary mineralization and porosity level are different, seafloor massive sulphides ores respond differently from terrestrial ore to processing methods. Froth flotation, commonly applied to separate all type of sulphides from the gangue, is one possible technique for processing seafloor ore. Sulphide recovery rate is, in most cases, excellent (>90%) however separation of the various mineral phases is difficult to obtain even when applying known methods used for terrestrial ore. Moreover, the flotation behaviour decreases drastically with the time of conservation at the surface, even when the samples were stored in a confined environment. High pH values, which is a good way to depress pyrite and therefore to favour the flotation of copper and zinc sulphides, do not have the same effect on seafloor ore. Consequently, careful flotation procedure must be elaborated to obtain efficient mineral separation technique for this specific marine ores."

This article gives an account of the latest developments in the use of TBE for sink-float separation of silicate minerals. A number of minerals for which the process has been tested and found suitable are reviewed. Specific examples are discussed in relation to the particular problems of sink-float separation and recovery of TBE as compared with non-silicate minerals. The economic aspects are outlined. Silica and silicates comprise the most common and abundant group of minerals, and since they are present in variable amounts in most ores, they constitute an appropriate subject for the review and discussion of the recent developments in the use of TBE for mineral concentration. The silicates considered as a group have an extremely wide range of chemical and physical properties. Some of these properties, which are common to all minerals, are of importance to concentration by TBE and are discussed in some detail in this paper, as well as the development of methods and apparatus for concentration and recovery of TBE and several examples of concentration of silicates. PROPERTIES OF MINERALS WITH RESPECT TO CONCENTRATION BY TBE The properties considered as most important to concentration by TBE are specific gravity, structure, surface and shape. The specific gravity of a mineral is a fundamental property and is constant between very close limits for the same species of different sources if particles are pure and free from cavities or cracks. In many species, however, solid inclusions and changes in chemical composition due to replacement of elements cause variations in the specific gravity. The plagio-clase series of feldspars between albite and anorthite illustrate this point (specific gravity from 2.60 to 2.77). Fig. 1 shows the specific gravity distribution of some of the common silicate minerals.' The highest specific gravity is about 4.7 (zircon) and the lowest is 2.0 (sepiolite), with most of them ranging between 2.6 and 3.5. Although most of the silicates given in Fig. 1 are found as constituents of rocks, those generally considered as rock making minerals are comparatively few. They include quartz, feldspars, nephelite, sodalite, leucite, mica, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chrysolite, kaolin, talc and serpentine. These minerals may appear in igneous rocks as coarse crystals in granites, syenites and diorites or as very fine grained dispersions in basalt and felsite. When the latter rocks occur in an ore, their specific gravities depend on the minerals present and structure. The same is true for the sedimentary and metamorphic rocks (sandstones, shales, gneiss, slate, schists). A comparison of specific gravities for the minerals listed in Fig. 1 with that of TBE (see Table I) shows that the important rock-forming minerals, with the exception of pyroxenes, amphiboles and chrysolite (olivine), lie in the specific gravity range of less than 2.96 and can therefore be separated by TBE. QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.
