Although Tantalum is not usually regarded as a precious metal, its pricing structure is very similar to that of Silver. Different from precious metals, Tantalum has only industrial applications and its use is about 1000 metric tons per year. The intrinsic value of Tantalum already in .the past was a driving force for its recycling. Based on these facts the Tantalum industry world-wide is approaching the closed-loop concept of its recycling. A detailed material flow of Tantalum processing as well as recovery of residues and used products will be discussed.

"The DC continuous casting of a grain refined AI-4.5%Cu round ingot with realistic boundary conditions is numerically simulated. Of particular interest are the effects of the transport of free solid in the form of equiaxed grains on the macro segregation patterns and the final grain size distribution. The study uses a previously developed two-phase model that incorporates descriptions of heat transfer, solute redistribution, melt convection, and solid transport on the system scale with microscopic models of solutal undercooling, microsegregation and grain impingement. The numerical results indicate that grain transport inhibits the formation of inverse segregation in the ingot shell and promotes negative centerline segregation. This is explained by the reduction in the solid coherency next to the mold and the advection of solute-lean grains towards the centerline. Comparisons with the experiments of Finn et al. [5] illustrate the need for considerable improvements in the model. IntroductionMacrosegregation continues to be one of the concerns in DC continuous casting of aluminum ingots. The variation in composition over the ingot cross section results in the need to adjust alloy composition in order to meet mechanical property specifications in finished products. The extent of macrosegregation is greatly affected by the casting conditions, such as casting speed, superheat, cooling rate, mold size, alloy composition, and grain refining practices. Thus, it is of great interest to develop a comprehensive mathematical model to simulate the casting process, enabling the selection of conditions that minimize macrosegregation while maintaining a high productivity."

The proposed EU directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment promotes the substitution of lead in consumer electronics to reduce emissions from lead in the end of life phase. In this paper, the consequences of substituting lead in solders is assessed using the Eco-Indicator-99 method for the examples. The base metal production system is considered as an interconnected network modeled dynamically in Simulink 4 and Matlab 6 (Mathworks Inc 2000), where the recovery and production of metal components of the assessed product partially overlap. This approach requires global modeling of metal production processes and mass balances and resulting allocation choices. It also reveals the susceptibility of LCA scores to different choices in the modeling and data availability and uncertainty. Besides the comparison between lead-free and lead-containing solders, other side effects are revealed. Lead is carrier material for the recycling and production of many co-elements in the interconnected production and recovery system. Substitution may have adverse effects such as temporary shortages of other connected metals that are often not considered in normal LCA assessments, thus leading to erroneous results. The suggested approach provides directions for including these extemal effects and for further assessment of the environmental effects of substituting lead. This paper shows that in order to assess the environmental aspects of metallurgy, dynamic modeling of the total system is required based on the fundamental thermodynamics in each metallurgical reactor, the basis of this dynamic model. With this the true environmental impact of metallurgy can be explained. In the case of lead free solder, it is shown that the mining of substitutes has a very much larger impact.

Sticking phenomenon occurring during hot rolling of two STS 430JlL ferritic stainless steels was analyzed by hot-rolling simulation tests. The sticking started from the initial nucleation stage in which the rolled materials were stuck onto the roll specimen surface, proceeded to the growth stage in which stuck fragments grew further, and reached the saturation stage. The modified 430JlL steel had a smaller number of sticking nucleation sites and slower growth rate than the conventional 430JlL steel because of higher high temperature hardness, thereby leading to less serious sticking. When the simulation test was conducted at 1070 °c, Cr oxides were formed on the surface of the rolled materials, and thus the sticking was drastically reduced because of the increased surface hardness of the rolled materials. In order to prevent the sticking, high-temperature properties of the rolled materials should be enhanced when rolled at 900°C or 1000 °C, and rolling conditions and alloying compositions, under which the oxide formation was promoted, were more important than high-temperature properties when rolled at higher temperatures than 1000 oC.

"Technology advancements in fossil fuel based energy generation and consumption are currently being aimed at minimization of CO2 emissions. To attain energy security, India must accelerate the pace of economic development, while achieving reduction in CO2 emissions per unit of energy consumed. It would need access to advanced coal utilization technologies to be demonstrated on indigenous coal characteristics. Of specific importance would be: improvement in coal quality, increasing energy efficiency and suitability of other CO2 sequestration technologies for reducing CO2 footprints. There is need to address related risks and financial burden through adoption of policies and regulations including the issue of open access in energy research. In this paper, seven important areas of strategic plan that need to be pursued for managing CO2 emissions in steel energy sector in India are discussed.IntroductionWorld is facing a crisis of climate change, which follows in the footsteps of global energy and environment crises. Accumulation of carbon dioxide from the generation and utilization of energy is leading to greenhouse warming and climate change. The global warming is causing the boundary between four seasons to be fuzzy and resulting in more spiky weather. Significance of its impact on environment is also determining the technology development needs in various sectors of economy for taking remedial measures.To respond to climate change concerns, the steel industry is undergoing a transition. It is at the threshold of a rapid change in technology as it targets innovation to achieve 50% reduction of CO2 emissions per ton of steel produced. Fossil fuel use is the main contributor of increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The control of air pollution and CO2 capture are thus relevant for a coal based industry, whether thermal power plant or a demand side energy intensive industry. World steel production has shown phenomenal increase in first eight years of 21st century increasing from 780 Mt in 2000 to 1343 Mt in 2008 [1]. It was merely 28 Mt in 1900. The global CO2 emissions from steel industry are also increasing and became 2550 Mt (3-4% of total GHG). Indian industry contribution was 161 Mt (15% of direct emissions from industry). It is likely to grow further to keep pace with the accelerated economic growth of 8-9% per annum."

Cylinders of commercial aluminium alloy 6063 were homogenized under different conditions. The experimental results indicated that the general mechanical behaviour as related to curves of 0.2% yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and Brunnell hardness versus homogeneizing process is the same in both cases. The mechanical properties as compared to those required by plant specifications, tend to be better with increasing values of % Mg2Si in the alloy, as expected. The electron microscopy investigations revealed that in both homogeneizing processes the resulting microstructure consist of significant spheroidizing of the alpha phase (AlFeSi) and fine-needle type structure of beta phase. The alpha phase was also present in a Chinese type scripture. Furthermore, the slow cooling within the furnace resulted in the nucleation and growth of Mg2Si precipitates generally along the grain boundaries.

The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has an interest in the recovery and processing of rare earth elements. At Montana Tech, elevated temperature chlorination of rare earth oxides is presently being investigated as a potential methods leading to the selective separation and recovery of rare earth elements from mineral ores and concentrates. After preliminary evaluation, ytterbium oxide was selected as a representative surrogate material for more extensive chlorination studies. Methods used to determine the conversion and recovery include X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis. These data have been used to establish and confirm process conditions that consistently yield high conversion efficiencies. Based on the promising results, further experimentation is underway to ascertain the metallurgical response of other rare earth oxides and carbonates to the roasting process. The end goal is to create a robust process for industrial application that has greater efficiency and reduced costs as compared to current practice.

The acid-ferric sulfate leaching of low-grade sulfide copper mine waste provides more than 10 percent of the U.S. supply of new copper, but recoveries and leaching rates are very low. In Federal Bureau of Mines research to improve the leaching process, experiments on 5- to 10-ton lots of mine-run ore were more revealing than bench-scale tests on fine ore. This report discusses the results obtained by leaching run-of-mine and minus 6-inch plus 112-inch samples of low-grade chalcocite-bearing mine waste. The samples were leached for 461 days and 61.6 and 37.7 percent of the copper was extracted from the minus 6-inch plus -112-inch and run-of- mine samples, respectively. A mixed kinetics model was applied successfully to the leaching of the sample with the fines removed where bulk solution transport was not rate controlling. The model, when applied to the run-of- mine ore, gave somewhat higher predicted copper extractions than experimentally determined. Subsequently, oxygen was introduced into the run-of- mine ore, leaching continued for an additional 312 days, and an additional 53.0 percent of the copper was extracted. Before the leaching experiment was dismantled and the residue sampled, the ore was treated with sulfur dioxide and its permeability was improved markedly. The results of each of these procedures are interpreted in relation to the attendant condition of the test.

"Two types of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films with different microstructures were prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering, and the tribological properties of the nanoscaled DLC multilayer coatings consisting of alternating layers of graphitelike and amorphous-like microstructures were examined. The DLC microstructure was characterized by certain features of graphite-like clusters, in that some of them had onion-like structures. The films filled with the clusters were obtained in a condition with an incidence of high influx of energetic electrons, and the other films without apparent cluster structures were formed in a condition with ion bombardment controlled by negative bias voltage applied to substrates. Stacking each film layer-by-layer, the nanoscaled multilayered coatings showed superior tribological properties to individual single-layered films due to the combination of properties induced by the difference of microstructures.IntroductionIn various tribologiql applications, it is necessary for diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings to have adequate adhesion, significant hardness and a concomitant low friction coefficient. A number of deposition techniques and coating structures have been proposed to achieve suitable DLC properties [1-3]. However it is still difficult to obtain a satisfactory level of combination of the properties particularly desirable for engineering applications.In this study, the features of unbalanced magnetron sputtering were demonstrated with the effect of ion and electron bombardment. Two types of microstructures , namely amorphous-like and graphite-like, were prepared by changing the condition of the charged particles bombardment during deposition. Using the difference of properties induced by the microstructures, nanoscaled DLC multilayered structures were examined in an attempt to improve tribological properties."

"Non-isothermal combustion experiments of different additive amount of bituminous (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 wt%) were conducted by synthesized thermogravimetry analyzer(STA409PC) from room temperature to 900°C in air. The changes of combustion characteristic parameters o f pulverized coals in different atmospheres are analyzed. The results show that DTG curves of coal combustion move to low temperature zones when the amount of bituminous increases. It indicates that both ignition and burnout temperature are lower, burnout time decreases, combustion characteristic index obviously increases, and combustion performance of blending coal are improved. The iso-conversional method involving Kissinger-Akah-Sunose (KAS) method was used for the kinetic analysis of the main combustion process. The results indicated that, when the additive amount of bituminous varied from 0 to 100 wt%, the value of activation energy which would sharply reduce if the additive amount of bituminous was under 60% increased from 133.94 kJ•mol-1 to 78.03 kJ•mol-1by using KAS method.IntroductionPulverized coal injection (PCI) to blast furnace (BF) is an important way for saving energy and reducing resource consumption during the ironmaking process. In order to acquire higher coal injection quantity, the relevant research topics in the field of pulverized coal combustion technology such as enhancing the efficiency of pulverized coal combustion, improving the combustion characteristics and reducing the harmful gas emissions and so on received extensive attention in recent years [1,2]. The combustion of blending coal when the appropriate proportion is selected for coal and also mixed well- distributed could give full play to the advantages of various types to make up the defects of single coal which is widely used throughout the world. So the blending coal injection to BF could produce a good impact on safety and economy for productive process. Therefore, a large amount of experimental researches on the combustion characteristic of blending coal for anthracite and bituminous were carried out by experts and scholars around the world [2-7].Nevertheless, the systematic research on the combustion behavior of anthracite with different content of bitumite in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) is less. So in this paper, using the method of multiple scanning rate of conversion method, bituminous to promote the pulverized coal combustion reaction was studied to analyze its promotion mechanism of pulverized coal combustion reaction process, and the kinetic parameters of activation energy was also calculated, which to provide theoretical basis for the rationalization of resource utilization."

"Environmental regulatory requirements for discharge of solutions and closure of operations for the gold mineral processing industry have been gradually lowered and in certain instances have been targeted to USEP A inorganic drinking water standards for dissolved ions in solution. The use of jar tests for water treatment process development is suitable for preliminary scoping work to be conducted in the research laboratory, as well as for optimization studies at the site of the treatment requirement. This paper will describe experimental methods which were performed using standard jar test equipment in efforts to produce solutions which meet USEP A inorganic drinking water standards after chemical treatment of cyanide solutions. The materials tested included gold bearing pregnant solutions from heap leaching operations, gold plant barren solutions from the Merrill-Crowe zinc cementation gold recovery process and gold heap leach wash solutions after carbon-in-column gold recovery. Experiments included cyanide destruction with sodium hypochlorite and arsenic and selenium co-precipitation coupled with mercury precipitation.IntroductionCyanide leaching solutions are used to selectively dissolve metallic gold from commercially viable mineral deposits. The heap leaching process involves stacking of gold bearing ores on specially designed solution containment pads and percolating alkaline cyanide solutions through the ore to dissolve the gold. Pregnant solutions containing the dissolved gold are collected and sent through a gold recovery process. After selective recovery of the gold, the barren solutions are recycled to the gold extraction process after adjustment of the solution alkalinity and available cyanide concentrations."

The effect of change in slag composition upon metal losses to the slag and the relationship between slag composition and slag matte separation was investigated at 1400°C. The synthetic slags containing CaO, MgO, SiO2,, A1,0, and FeO were similar to those employed in the electric furnace smelting of sulphide Cu-Ni concentrates containing PGM (Precious Group Metals) from the Merensky Reef of South Africa. The matte with a grade of 9.3% Cu and 16.0% Ni was a typical electric furnace product. The results indicated that the Cu and Ni solubility in the slag increases with the increase of the basicity ratio and CaO and MgO contents of the slag. At constant CaO/MgO ratios the rise in basicity decreases the metal losses. When FeO and SiO2 contents of the slag are kept constant, the substitution of MgO with CaO decreases the metal losses. The relationship between slag composition and matte-slag separation was found to depend primarily on the basicity ratio and the FeO content of the slag. The net effect comes from a strong interaction of the two in such a way that increasing basicity and decreasing FeO contents deteriorate the clean separation of the two phases.

Low grade sulfidic-carbonaceous refractory ore from Newmont Gold Company's Carlin deposit was microbially pretreated. The biological pretreatment process gave partial oxidation of the sulfidic components of the refractory ore but the preg-robbing carbon continued to be active resulting in approximately zero cyanide gold extraction. A 495 ton pilot plant test heap was conducted using acidic thiourea leach following biooxidation. Activated carbon and cation exchange resin adsorption were tested for gold recovery from the thiourea pregnant solution. The results obtained from the test heap were not satisfactory. Gold extraction was low due to slow reaction kinetics which was caused by relatively large particles and very low winter temperatures. Problems existed in the thiourea-test heap and are discussed in this paper. An alternative heap leach process using thiosulfate has been successfUl at the pilot scale for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of refractory sulfidic-carbonaceous ores.

Montana Tech has been engaged in fundamental research on the processing of critical materials for more than a decade. Efforts include examining novel reagents for the flotation of Rare Earth Minerals (REMs). For this paper, research results on a collector, salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA), are presented. Various REMs were examined and include the rare earth oxides (REOs), carbonates (RECs), and phosphates (REPs) of a suite of Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Differences are attributed to solution and surface chemistry, coordination number, and ionic diameter. SHA adsorption follows an ion-exchange process that leads to chemisorbed and surface-precipitated states, depending mostly on pH. Many effects are directly attributed to lanthanide contraction. Results should also be applicable to other REM/collector systems and further suggest that REM flotation should consider dual collectors.

Methods for simulation of settler reactions, matte-slag separation and matte settling in copper flash smelting have been examined. The reaction, separation and settling phenomena of slightly oxidized chalcopyrite samples and cuprous sulfide-magnetite mixtures in fayalite type slags were examined at about 1300°C under inert atmosphere. Two methods based on introduction of molten samples of oxidized chalcopyrite concentrates or synthetic matte-magnetite mixtures onto the surface of molten iron silicate slag were tested. In the first method the samples were water quenched and polished specimens were studied and analysed using light optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer. In the second method processes taking place after the introduction of samples onto the slag are followed "in situ" using X-ray transmission image monitoring. Great differences were observed in separation and settling behaviour of low and high grade copper mattes produced as a results of interaction of initial samples and slag.

"We present a parallel lattice Boltzmann - cellular automaton model of the two-dimensional dendritic growth during solidification of binary alloys. The model incorporates effects of solute and energy transport under melt convection. The parallel performance of the algorithm is assessed. A loss in the parallel efficiency is observed when multiple computational cores per processor are utilized. Excellent strong scaling up to thousands of computing cores is obtained across the nodes of a computer cluster, along with the near-perfect weak scaling up to forty thousand cores. The presented solidification model shows a good scalability up to centimeter size domains, including millions of dendrites.IntroductionLattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is an attractive numerical technique for solving fluid dynamics problems. Its advantages are simple formulation and locality, with locality facilitating parallel implementation. In the present model, interface kinetic is driven by the difference between local actual and local equilibrium liquid composition [1]. The cellular automaton (CA) technique is deployed to track the solid-liquid interface [2]. A serial version of the present LBM-CA model with a small number of dendrites was validated against theoretical and experimental results in the previous publications [3, 4]. In this work, it is the first time that simulations with millions of dendrites were performed, something not possible with the computationally much more costly phasefield method [5].This research effort examines a technique for simulations of millions of dendrites in centimeter size domains, including thermal, convection, and solute redistribution effects. Nearly ideal scaling properties of the model are demonstrated. This extensively large landmark was achieved because of• the CA technique being two orders of magnitude faster than alternative, phase-field methods [5]• highly parallelizable LBM method, convenient for simulations of flow within complex and time dependent boundaries• availability of the powerful NSF Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) supercomputing resources"

"Complete and accurate analysis of subgrain microstructural features must include three-dimensional information. Three-dimensional electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) data can be used to characterize these features; however their boundaries first must be determined. This cannot be accomplished simply with pixel-to-pixel misorientation thresholding because many of the boundaries are gradual transitions in crystallographic orientation. Fast Multiscale Clustering (FMC) is an established image processing technique that we have combined with quaternion representation of orientation to segment this kind of data. Segmentation algorithms often have issues handling images with both distinct and subtle boundaries. Our implementation of FMC addresses this by using a novel distance function and statistical analysis to take into account the variance in orientation of each feature. Although FMC was originally a twodimensional image processing algorithm it can be generalized to analyze threedimensional data sets. As an example, a segmentation of microbands in cold-rolled aluminum is presented.IntroductionThree-dimensional electron backscatter diffraction (3D-EBSD) is a method for mapping the local crystallographic orientations of points in a volume. The technique uses a dual beam platform consisting of a focused ion beam (FIB) and SEM with EBSD, where FIB is used for serial sectioning and EBSD for orientation mapping of 2D slices. These 2D slices may then be stacked to create a 3D volumetric data set.Typical uses of such a data set include characterizing the geometries and crystallographic orientations of surfaces between structures in 3D [1-5]. This involves identifying boundaries accurately, either in 2D slices with subsequent 3D reconstruction (as illustrated in Figure 1) or in the 3D data set. All such data sets present the challenges of i) aligning data slices to correct for instrument drift, ii) identifying relevant boundaries, and iii) implementing appropriate smoothing or interpolation algorithms. Large quantities of sea sludge containing halogenated organic compounds, such as PCB, oils and metals like arsenic and lead have accumulated throughout the years at the bottom of sea channels and harbors and are obstructing navigation and creating environmental problems which need to be resolved. A sludge from a California port would be dredged by suction pumps, it would be processed in a plant which would be built either on firm soil or on floating platforms. The sludge shows contents of up to 1 ppm of PCB, 15 % oil and 10 ppm of arsenic, which generates a very fetid odor. Bench scale work indicates that most of the contamination concentrates on the solid phase, in fact, only minor amounts of oil report to the sea water and can be readily removed by physical means. After separation of the sea water from the solids of the sludge by decantation, it is possible to solubilize the PCB, the oil and the metals into an organic solvent leaving a non-hazardous soil for disposal near the harbor. The PCB is dehalogenated during the solubilization process leaving a liquor solution containing the oil and metals. The oil is extracted leaving an aqueous solution containing the arsenic. Further process extracts the arsenic from this solution rendering the liquid non-hazardous. Transportation and disposal of the sludge is impractical. There are hundreds of thousands of tons of hazardous soils accumulated in each harbor, which would fill the hazardous waste disposal sites available and it would be, prohibitively expensive to do so. It is not possible to compare the costs of decontamination with a competitive method. If it were, the proposed process would be less expensive than transportation and disposal and it has the advantage of removing the liabilities from the Responsible party. After a full scale continuous pilot project is run to decontaminate a small, 500 cubic yards accumulation of this type of sludge in a California harbor, a full scale environmental project would be initiated. The decontamination of one million tons of sludge would be completed in five years.

"Zinc-Tin alloys were solidified in horizontal form and the obtained results were analyzed. During solidification the distribution of temperatures were measured by using thermocouples located strategically along the length of the samples. From the measured temperatures the following parameters were derived; the local temperature gradient, the cooling rate and the velocities of the liquid and solids fronts. Comparing the structure of the samples and the values of these parameters it was found that the temperature gradient reaches minimum values of as low as - 0.6 °C/cm, and velocities of the fronts of around 0.1 cm/s. In addition, the grain size was measured along the samples. The results are presented and discussed in the frame of the results previously obtained for other alloys.IntroductionGenerally solidification leads to two types of grain morphologies: columnar and equiaxed. The origin of each one has been the subject of numerous theoretical and experimental researches in the field of metallurgy for many years [1-7]. The columnar-to-equiaxed transition, CET, is considered as an object of high technological relevance with respect to the directional solidification of metallic alloys. This structure transition may be sharp or gradual and it has been reported to be dependent on thermal conditions associated with the casting process, including melt convection, heat transfer coefficients at the metal-mold interface, growth rates, thermal gradients, cooling rates, transport of solute, alloy composition, melt superheat, mold temperature, mold design, casting size, casting geometry, and the concentration of nucleating particles. As a consequence, it is critical for industrial applications to understand the physical mechanisms which control this transition during solidification. Many studies highlight the importance of the relative growth of the equiaxed and columnar grains and develop expressions or numerical procedures to describe a criterion for the CET. A number of experimental investigations reported in the literature suggest that the CET occurs when GL in the melt reaches a minimum critical value [5-7]."

Today the BOF filter dusts and sludges are mainly dumped due to their zinc contents. By typically ranging from 2 to 5 % they prevent the filter dusts and sludges from beeing recycled via the blast furnace route. Based on the different discharge kinetics of Iron and zinc during the main blowing period In a bottom stirred BOF a simple and efficient system for recovery allow zinc fractions has been developed. The obtained material Is suitable for recycling without nsc of shell formation In the blast furnace. Different subsequent development steps have been performed. By starling with a very simple lime dependent model the sludge from the BOF off gas cleaning system was collected in two different sludge channel systems. This model based an the fact that most of the scrap based zinc Is discharged from the melt within the first eight to ten minutes of the BOF process. To Improve the system a spectroscope zinc sensor was Installed at the hot section of the off gas cleaning system to get more reliable informations on the actual zinc concentation of the BOF dust. By use of the system up to 50 % of the BOF sludge can be recycled.
