Predictive geochemical and limnologic modeling of pit lakes is an important aspect of modern permitting. One of the key assumptions of many predictive pit-lake models is that highwalls and pit backfill become unreactive once submerged by the filling pit lake. Existing pit lakes provide useful data to test this assumption. The Sleeper pit lake (northwestern Nevada) is near hydrologic equilibrium and contains good-quality water that generally meets regulatory requirements for pit lakes. Despite the overall stable geochemical composition, seasonal trends in the hypolimnion indicate the generation of solutes and fluctuations in pH. This work applies mass balance, analysis of subaqueous pyrite oxidation, and trends in solute concentrations to evaluate the potential causes of long-term solute generation in the hypolimnion of the Sleeper pit lake. Results will aid in refining the effect that inundation of highwalls and waste rock has on ultimate pit lake chemistry and long-term closure planning. In the case of the Sleeper pit lake, ongoing solute loading does not substantially change the closure plan at this time as influent groundwater contains abundant alkalinity. INTRODUCTION As mine pit lakes become more widespread, regulatory agencies are increasingly requiring advanced predictive modeling of pit-lake geochemistry during permitting. The end goal of all those involved in these permitting actions (i.e., the mining company, the regulatory agencies, and the public) is to have pit lakes become geochemically and hydrologically stable for the long term, which may then allow mining permits to be relinquished. The modeling endeavors therefore are important to inform long-term closure of pit lakes. The conceptual models and numerical methods used to predict pit-lake water quality are complex and require substantial amounts of data and a variety of assumptions (Castendyk et al., 2015). One of the common modeling assumptions is that solute generation via acid mine drainage is eliminated (or at least decreased) by the filling of the pit lake and inundation of highwalls and any in-pit waste rock. However, few studies have reported on observations that support or refute this assumption. The water-quality record of the Sleeper pit lake is an ideal dataset with which to test these assumptions. The former Sleeper mine is located in northwestern Nevada (Fig. 1), and has been inactive (in terms of ore extraction) since 1996. The mine extracted Au and Ag from the famous high-grade Sleeper vein and associated widespread stockwork mineralization (Nash et al., 1995). Water quality in the pit lake has been monitored since the cessation of dewatering in 1996. The current pit lake actually occupies three separate sub-pits, the Sleeper, Wood, and Office pits (Fig. 1). The Sleeper and Wood pits undergo regular water-column monitoring using a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) probe, and sampling for dissolved inorganic constituents at several depths (~10, ~130, and ~330 ft. below lake surface). Groundwater quality is also monitored using a series of wells (Fig. 1).

Preliminary test results at Occidental Research Corp.’s Irvine, CA, research facility indicate the viability of a new induced fluorescent sorting technique for preconcentration of limestone, coal, and oil shale. The patented “Oxylore”* process is a preconcentration stage that takes advantage of selective surface chemistry to label either ore or gangue particles with a fluorescent coating that can be detected by activation with ultraviolet light. The technology was originally developed by Ted Matthews (SME-AIME Fall Meeting, 1974, Preprint 74-B-328) and was acquired by Occidental in 1977. The firm has continued development of the process since its acquisition.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. Nino study demonstrated (Hale and Govett, 19677 Govett and Hale, 1967) the feasibility of geochemical prospecting relative to other exploration methods for the location and delineation of disseminated copper occurrences, the major source of metal in the expanding mineral industry of the Philippines. Two counties in Illinois, Ope and Hardin, and three counties in Kentucky, Crittenden, Livingston and Caldwell comprise the entire Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar district. The output from these five counties, however, makes up over 60 percent of our domestic fluorspar production, amounting to some 175,000 tons of finished product in 1956, The area is rough and hilly. It is bisected by the Ohio River, and has numerous smaller rivers and creeks. Add to this a generous average annual rainfall, in excess of forty inches, and it is understandable that the-area-can boast of an ample water supply. An abundance of water, however, is unfortunately not always conducive to ideal mining conditions. The faulted structure of the area and the soluble Mississippian limestones make the subsurface sediments' willing hosts to the surface water. Limestone cavers and sinkhole topography also compound the occurrence of underground water. It is little wonder, then, that water frequently presents an economic problem in the area, particularly in vein-type mining.

It is a generally accepted and widely discussed fact that the world in general, and the United States in particular, face a shortage of energy at the present time which will become worse in the future. There is, however, no sign of a similar concensus as to the actions which would prevent or overcome this expected shortage. An immense variety of solutions has, however, been put forward, ranging from the purely political to the outer fringes of sophisticated technology. One resource which surprisingly is often only cursorily included in this discussion is the immense known petroleum reserve lying within the United States. When this subject is discussed, indeed, it is usually in the context of the improvements in production or new discovery rate that could be expected to result from possible politico-economic actions that would raise the real price obtained for domestic crude. This interest in the potential for improved domestic production is undoubtedly justified, but very little attention is normally drawn to the fact that even under the most favorable policy framework the majority of the oil that has been, or will be, discovered will remain in the ground due to the inherent limitations of production through surface wells.

Minerações Brasileiras Reunidas S.A. - MBR is a brazilian iron ore mining company geared for the export market. It is controlled by Companhia Auxiliar de Empresas de Minerações - CAEMI through its subsidiary Empreendimentos Brasi leiros de Minerações - EBM which holds 51% in MBR and is formed by CAEMI, the six major japanese steelmills and five japanese trading companies, Universe Tankships, Inc., and Indústria e Comércio de Minérios S.A. - ICOMI. The remaining 49% of MBR's capital are held by St. John del Rey Mining Company, a subsidiary of The Hanna Mining Company. MBR iron ore reserves exceed 1.5 billion tons of high grade ore distributed in 36 deposits located in the so-called IRON QUADRANGLE in the State of Minas Gerais. The Aguas Claras Mine is the largest presently known and highest grade deposit owned by MBR. Other mines such as Pico, Mutuca and Jangada are in operation at a combined rate of production of about 2 to 2. 5 million tons per year. The project consists of mine, railroad and marine terminal (slide). The Aguas Claras deposit, which is located about six kilometers southeast of Belo Horizonte the Capital of Minas Gerais, was selected for initial development. The Sistema Regional Centro of the Rede Ferroviária Federal, through its 6th Division known as the "Central " is responsible for the transportation of MBR ore, and provided the necessary railway construction to connect Mine and Terminal. The Terminal is located on Guaiba Island near the entrance to Sepetiba Bay, at about 120 kilometers west of Rio de Janeiro.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed, and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear-flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, mean particle size increased rapidly in the first 1-2 min of reaction; in the second stage, an equilibrium was set up between the rate of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear-flocculation to occur and was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier which kept conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. INTRODUCTION Historically, pollution control in the metal-ore mining industry has been very limited. Unless mine water contained large quantities of solids, it was generally discharged without any treatment. If treatment was used to control solids, it was principally the provision of a settling basin in the form of a tailings impoundment used in conjunction with an associated metal ore dressing facility. Recently, however, a growing awareness of the adverse environmental impacts of mine drainage, coupled with strict environmental laws, has prompted the mining industry to look at new technologies and to refine the existing methods to further treat the wastes generated. This industry is unique in that waste loadings are extremely variable, and a "typical facility with typical waste loads" does not exist. Consequently, one waste- water treatment system cannot be utilized on an industry wide basis; rather, each treatment system must be designed specifically for the pollutants in each individual discharge. Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) Amendments of 1972, became effective on Oct. 18, 1972. This law completely restructured Federal laws and philosophies underlying the Federal approach to water pollution control. Prior to the 1972 amendments, the principal Federal regulatory tool had been water-quality standards based on a designated use for a particular body of water. The concept was that waste disposal into water bodies is a desirable and acceptable use of the water body if it does not interfere with other beneficial uses. This had the effect of requiring various degrees of treatment and, consequently, various economic hardships on industries de- pendent upon their location. In many waterways. it is very difficult to quantitatively relate discharges to water quality. The 1972 amendments changed the basic philosophy, as stated in the Senate Committee report on the bill, to ". . . no one has the right to pollute . . . that pollution continues because of technological limits, not because of any inherent right to use the nation's waterways for the purpose of disposing of wastes." Pursuant to Sections 301, 304(b), and 306 of the FWPCA Amendments of 1972, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required to establish effluent standards applicable to all industrial discharges. These standards must be based upon the application of the "best practicable control technology currently avail- able" (BPT) and the application of the "best available technology economically achievable" (BAT). The BPT and BAT levels must be achieved industry-wide by July 1, 1977, and July 1, 1983, respectively. WASTE SOURCES The waste-water situation in the mining segment of the ore mining and dressing industry is unlike that encountered in most other industries. Most industries (e.g., the milling segment of this industry) utilize water in the specific processes they employ. This water frequently becomes contaminated during the process and must be treated prior to discharge. However, in the mining segment, process water normally is not utilized in the actual mining of ores (exceptions are hydraulic mining operations and dust control), but it is a natural occurrence that interferes with mining activities and must be removed before mining can commence. Water enters mines by ground-water infiltration and surface runoff, and it comes into contact with materials in the host rock, ore, and overburden. The underground mine must pump large quantities of ground water to prevent flooding of the mine. Water from surface mining operations generally occurs as a result of surface runoff of rainwater. Generally, mining operations control surface runoff through the use of diversion ditching and grading to prevent, as much as possible, excess water from entering the working area. Nevertheless, some surface runoff does come into contact with the working area and may become contaminated. The quantity of water from an .ore mine is unrelated, or only indirectly related, to production quantities. De- pending upon its quality, the mine water may require treatment before it can be discharged into the surface drainage network. The variability of water quality from mines can best be demonstrated by looking at Table 1. This table shows the range of pollutant concentrations in untreated discharges from three different categories of mines (as categorized by EPA in the development of BPT and BAT effluent standards for the metal-mining industry). Data for this table were obtained during EPA's preparation of effluent standards for this industry. The parameters shown on the table are the pollutant parameters of primary interest in this industry; blanks in the table indicate that data were not available, and the parameter is not expected to be present in significant quantities. Other pollutant parameters are present in mining waste water, but they are either incidentally removed in the treatment process or are found only in trace amounts. The three categories comprise more than 90% of the metal production value in the United States and approximately 95% of the total mine discharges. It is important to note that not all parameters are found in significant concentrations at all locations. IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY One of the most troublesome mine-drainage problems is acidity. Although generally associated with coal mining, acid mine drainage frequently occurs from other types of mines. Although the exact mechanism of acid mine drainage is not fully understood, it generally is believed that pyrite (iron sulfide, FeS,) is oxidized by oxygen (Eq. 1) or ferric iron (Eq. 2) to produce ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) . The mining of ores associated with pyritic material exposes the pyrites to water and oxygen and grossly accelerates the natural oxidation processes, resulting in the significant production of acid mine drainage.

In the present study, the use of horse residue as an alternative reducing agent in the roasting of a low-grade goethite ore containing 17.60% Fe was investigated. Additional roasting experiments were carried out with corn starch and without reducing agent for comparison. Each roasted product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic hysteresis (MH) loops analyses. The optimum roasting conditions (roasting temperature [400, 500, and 600 °C], reducing agent/ore ratio [0.04, 0.08, and 0.12], and roasting time [10, 20, and 30 min]) were investigated based on the Taguchi approach. The magnetic susceptibilities of the roasted sample with the addition of reducing agents were higher compared to that of the roasted sample in the absence of reducing agent. Experimental findings indicate that the horse residue can be used as the reducing agent. Finally, an iron ore concentrate assaying a Fe grade of 62.12% with a recovery of 56.93% was prepared using wet magnetic separation at a magnetic intensity of 0.5 T from the ore roasted under the following roasting conditions: roasting temperature of 500 °C, reducing agent/ sample ratio of 0.08, and roasting time of 30 min.

Even though project management is successfully used throughout the world in various construction projects, underground mining has unique characteristics that require approaches that vary from classical project management theory. Typically, a project includes four main stages: definition, planning, implementation and control. Definition and planning are often the most overlooked stages, but are arguably the most important. This paper addresses practical techniques for the definition and planning of projects for underground construction.

The precious metal refinery process is divided into the five process stages: 1 .copper/nickel leaching in autoclave 2. selenium roasting furnace 3. doré metal smelting furnace 4. silver electrolysis 5. gold recovery system. The process has been developed during the years in Outokumpu Harjavalta Metals, which treats about 600000 kg /year copper anode slime. The slime treatment process route in Outokumpu Pori plant has been developed from year 1941. During this period the process has been improved radically. The major changes has been the atmosphere leaching into the autoclave leaching, the sulfuric acid roasting furnace was changed into sulfuric dioxide / oxygen roasting. The old doré smelting furnace has changed into the TROF converter and the gold electrolysis / aqua regia process has changed into the quick hydrochloric acid leaching process. The current production in Pori plant is 30000 kg of silver, 1000 kg gold, 30000 kg of selenium and some hundred kg of platinum- palladium concentrate.

The Chino Mines Co., a Kennecott- Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, NM, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/concentrator modernization commenced in 1980, and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was con- structed near the mine using semiautogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of saleable copper.

In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

When Ralph Banks called and asked if I would agree to present a paper on environmental health in the coal industry, I was reluctant because I have not been actively involved in coal mine dust control on a day-to-day basis for a number of years. Ralph reminded me that I am one of the few industry people with an industrial health background who remembers the pre-1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety era. This marks the second time within the past year that I have had a similar request based on the same basic reasons. While I was pleased to have been remembered, I'm beginning to feel like the football player who has played one too many games. In responding to Ralph's request to present an overview of the past, present and future of environmental health in the coal industry, I have attempted to take the broad approach of someone who, having been intimately involved in an area of endeavor for a number of years and then leaves, has an opportunity to revisit that area at a later date to see what has changed and what remains the same, what have been the successes and the failures. Since none of us can foresee the future, trying to project too far ahead is fraught with frivolity, except that unless one is foolish enough to accept a future invitation to review those predictions compared to actual events, no one will recall how accurate or inaccurate those projections might have been. I can assure you that I will not ask to accept that challenge, so you can rest comfortably that five years from today you will not be asked to sit through a similar presentation by me - and that's a promise.

A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

Basic laboratory tests initiated the. Rock Mechanics program. The stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, the uniaxial rock strengths, Mohr's envelope, the stress at failure, and creep were investigated. A series of underground problems were then approached using this information; and various field measuring devices, most of which were developed by the Bureau of Mines. Initially, stress concentrations near mine openings were evaluated using the stress relief technique. This required an accurate determination of the pre-mining stress field. Later, stress concentrations associated with the cave line .sere studied. After about thirty stress reliefs over an appropriate time interval the effects of one type of mining could be compared against another. The microseismic technique was used to investigate a possible application of warning devices near the cave line. A study of mane reorientation was made Problems related to the shape and size of pillars and barriers were studied. Partial extraction mining systems were evaluated. The effectiveness of roof bolting patterns were examined. Control of roof stresses was attempted. A new system of mining in heavy ground has been developed using the information secured in the Rock Mechanics program without this system, mining in more than one instance would Nave been next to impossible. Indeed; from this one discovery alone, the Rock Mechanics program has paid off in improved safety as well as in dollars.

The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. The environmental controls for a belt conveyor system are those which will restrict the emission of fugitive dust particles and can be considered as follows:

The incidence of heat stroke in the South African gold mining industry is today small (less than 1 in 10 6 shifts worked). Acclimatization and selection procedures have been developed and applied throughout the industry, underground working conditions have, and are being improved, and personnel are to-day made more aware of heat stress and its consequences than ever before. Although these actions have, over the years, brought about a steady reduction in the incidence of heat stroke (see Figure 1) the small incidence of heat stroke which persists indicates that heat stress is still a problem. This realization provides the stimulus for the work presented in this paper, which has as its primary objective the development of reliable heat stress limits for men working in South African gold mines. [ ] In keeping with recent trends3I4 the approach followed in this paper is based on the physical principles of heat transfer. Detailed studies of heat transfer from humans have been undertaken,5-l1 and certain of the results form an important aspect of this Paper -
