Building a new tunnel to accommodate CN North America's needs for double stacked container traffic for the next 100 years presented new and unprecedented challenges. Innovative approaches to contracting, especially the Negotiated Compressed Process (NCP), TBM design, project management, and the regulatory and approval process, were all required to deliver a new tunnel to meet the needs of CN North America within the approved completion schedule of 39 months compared to a traditional approach of 45 to 48 months. The NCP resulted in trimming 6 to 9 months from the project schedule, at a great saving of direct and indirect costs. The Negotiated Compressed Process is an innovative formalized approach to risk sharing for complex infrastructure projects. Ads were placed in the international trade journals and a short list of "approved" contractors and suppliers was developed. The approval process for this international project involved contacts with over two hundred agencies, departments and interested stakeholders.

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.

It is common practice in Appalachia, when extending the life of an existing mine, to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. Also, often the existing mine is renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may be modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (M.V.S.) that require proper planning and control procedures. The authors describe and present the study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine located in the Appalachian coal region. Discussed first is the process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine. Then, some of the stages of controlling the expanded system are discussed. Finally, numerical data for these steps are presented.

The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al(III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al(III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism, whether or not Pb(II) is present, when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8, and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al(III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminopropionic acid is used as collector, good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al(III).

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

"INTRODUCTION Industries around the globe have been making significant advancements in recent years due to innovations in automation technology. With the implementation of modern automation technology, professionals in process automation or plant operations can expect significant and exciting change, and the mining and mineral processing industries are no exception. From 2000 to 2010, the International Council on Mining & Metals (ICMM) reported that an increased output and increased value of most metals has resulted in a rise in global metal and mineral process industries from $214 billion to $644 billion. [1] Since most productivity increases in mining and mineral process industries have been achieved through the ability to process lower grade ores with improved efficiency and larger equipment, these industries have begun to adopt advanced automation and control technologies. Despite a growth slow-down, the mining and mineral processing industries are poised for continued and sustainable growth and development due to an increasing demand for energy minerals and emerging technologies requiring minerals and metals previously not demand. However, as these industries becomes more automated, new challenges are arising on the horizon. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB John Payne from BP is credited with first using the term Demographic Time Bomb to describe the upcoming crisis in the process industry in finding experienced operations personnel. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years. This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, this implies that these skilled mining and mineral process professionals are an aging population with irreplaceable knowledge and experience that are expected to retire in the next 5-10 years. While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences."

Lightweight aggregates are classified as those minerals, natural rock materials, rock-like products, and byproducts of manufacturing processes that are used as bulk fillers in lightweight structural concrete, concrete building blocks, precast structural units, road surfacing materials, plaster aggregates, and insulating fill. Other uses include architectural wall covers, suspended ceilings, soil conditioners, and other agricultural uses (Mason, 1989). One unusual agricultural use recently reported was for bedding on a crocodile farm on the south coast of Natal. It seems that female crocodiles became upset because there was no vermiculite in which to lay their eggs due to the late arrival of a consignment of vermiculite. The vermiculite was being used as a substitute for river sand to nest crocodile eggs (Griffiths, 1989). The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1. Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials, such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2. Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing shale, clay, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3. Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. This group of lightweight materials, with the exception of slag, has become less significant and will not be discussed in this chapter. Other lightweight aggregates are beginning to appear in the marketplace. Some are the result of manufacturing processes on industrial byproducts and/or waste products, such as fly ash and incinerator residue (Bigner, 1992). 4. Manufactured Insulating Ultralightweight Aggregates-pre- pared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite, perlite, and diatomite. The application of diatomite in brick and in extruded and aggregate forms has declined in recent years (Kadey, 1983) and will not be considered in this chapter. Lightweight aggregates for structural concrete and concrete masonry units, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (1986) consist of "aggregates of low density used to produce lightweight concrete, including: pumice, scoria, volcanic cinders, tuff and diatomite; expanded shale, clay, slate, perlite, vermiculite or slag; and end products of coal or coal combustion" (Mason, 1989). Lightweight aggregates are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weights-1 281 to 1 602 kg/m3 or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates-as com- pared to 2 002 kg/m3 or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other common mineral aggregates. The specific gravities of these lightweight aggregates are also used to classify them for use in concrete; they range from the extremely light materials, used for insulative and non-structural concrete to expanded shale, clay, slate, and slags used for structural concrete. Vermiculite and perlite are sometimes referred to as super light- weights. Insulating concrete (non-load bearing) weighing as little as 240 kg/m3 can be made with these aggregates. Natural aggregates such as pumice, pumicite, and scoria are normally made into concrete weighing about 400 to 480 kg/m3. Expanded shale, clay, and slate produced in a rotary kiln make structural concrete ranging from 1 201 to 1 842 kg/m3. Expanded shale and clay produced by sintering make concrete that ranges from 1 442 to 1 922 kg/m3. Air-cooled slag produces concrete ranging from 2 162 to 2 403 kg/m3. The low density lightweight aggregates are used primarily for insulating purposes. They have relatively low compressive strength. The middle density aggregates are used for insulation and for fill. Those at the upper end develop excellent compressive strength and are used in many structural applications (Anon., 1971). In recent years, the production of lightweight aggregates in the United States for all uses (including insulation and construction materials) has averaged about 19 Mtpy (Table 1). The production and consumption of lightweight aggregate is closely tied to the fortunes of the construction industry and the need to construct energy efficient buildings. Recent years have seen the production of lightweight aggregate approach the levels of the early 1970s. The period of 1979 to 1981 was a low point in production levels. The low levels of production were caused by significantly higher plant energy costs due to the large amounts of fuel and energy used in the production of most types of lightweight aggregate. Lower levels of construction activity also affect production levels. This chapter focuses on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and on both the production and use of manufactured structural light- weight aggregates. Some additional comments are made on byproduct materials. Separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders are elsewhere in the volume. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials.

The Falconbridge Dominicana laboratory receives samples from all parts of the operation. Ore, metal and oil samples are taken by operating departments, gas and water samples by the laboratory staff. Physical sample preparation is essentially standard and produces comminuted samples for wet-chemical analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). T he main operating sections of the laboratory are described indicating in each case the type of instrumentation and method used, sample types analysed and comments on problems experienced. Emphasis is given to the sample preparation and X-ray sections especially with regard to the difficulties caused by our heterogenous ore material, calibration of the instrument and operational malfunctions. General problems related to our remote location and the tropical climate are discussed. Limited statistics on instrument availability, and stability, accuracy, precision, etc., are given.

Simulating a ventilation network of an underground mine can help in solving complex ventilation systems with many features, selecting proper fan specifications, location and settings. Early computer systems running simple network simulations were able to provide solutions to the most common and immediate problems regarding underground mine airflow. The more advanced systems available today can perform more sophisticated modeling and simulation of a mine?s ventilation network and present their results in a more understandable and easy to communicate form. This paper presents a ventilation network case study from an underground mine. All aspects of mine ventilation network modeling and simulation are discussed as well as the results from the simulation process. The algorithms and techniques used are thoroughly explained. Some useful guidelines for the application of ventilation network software are also provided in the text.

Discrepancies in raw materials properties informed by both producer or consumer is a common problem in most areas of the industry. Commercial contracts in the mineral industry normally penalises the producer, if contaminants in the ore exceed established limits. In some situations, the supplier is penalised if the quality of the ore is below a contracted amount. Differences in lab analysis are due many sources of error, such as distinct practices used in two laboratories for sampling, preparation or analysis. Rigid contracts impose to the miner the use of rigorous quality control program and in these situations sampling plays a major role. Sampling theory provides the tools to analyse errors involved in sampling, preparation and analysis. This paper proposes a methodology to check the precision and accuracy of a given sampling protocol emphasising the application of Gy's sampling theory to broken ore. A procedure to measure the error on each step of the protocol is introduced and the results compared to the fundamental error measured by Gy's theory. The results show the applicability of the method and its relevance to audit sampling procedures aiming at error minimisation. The methodology is illustrated in a case study at a major coal producer in Brazil.

Erie Mining Company, a pioneer in the iron ore pelletizing industry, has continued to develop methods and equipment to improve cost and quality. Under the management of Pickands Mather & Co., this property, owned by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., and Interlake, Inc., has initiated a number of operating improvements for the taconite industry. One of the most noteworthy of these, which is applicable to the entire mineral industry, is the principle of fine screening with rappers (FSR). Erie's original efforts in the field of fine screening, which date back to 1961, were described in the April 1967 issue of the MINING ENGINEERING magazine. In that same month, Erie placed into operation a full scale PSR and regrind plant addition, capable of processing 10.3 million long tons of iron ore concentrates, produced by conventional taconite grinding, classification, and magnetic separation methods. Since this first successful commercial operation of the PSR principle et Erie, it has been applied in eight other iron ore beneficiation plants end is being tested by other U.S. and foreign companies. In addition to the use of PSR units at Erie Mining Company, Pickands Mather has applied PSR to other of its managed properties end to projects under development. This paper covers these applications as well as a now application at Erie Mining Company.

In 1994, Cyprus Twentymile Coal Company and Scandura formed a joint task force charged with the purpose of developing the highest rated fabric belt for underground longwall coal mining. This paper details the development efforts and concepts utilized by Cyprus and Scandura to meet the challenging demands of Twentymile Coal's East Mine District (EMD). The finished panel consisted of a 5,500 meter (18,000 feet) conveyor with 245 meter (800 feet) of drop over the first 3,660 meters (12,000 feet) and 245 meters (800 feet) of lift out-by over 1,830 meters (6,000 feet). The panel was designed with an operating capacity of 4,500 tph (5,000 stph) and 4.1 m/s (800 fpm) belt speed.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. Low-flow reactive-transport processes in Wightman Fork downstream of the Summitville Mine, south-central Colorado were simulated using the OTIS and OTEQ solute-transport models. The simulation was calibrated using data from a synoptic study conducted during October, 1998. Discharge over the 8-km reach from just below the mine site to the Alamosa River confluence ranged from 0.077 to 0.17 m3/s; travel time was 10.7 hours; pH ranged from 4.6 to 5.7. Simulations revealed that mass balance for SO4 was maintained, and that pH, Fe, and Al were non-conservative. Simulations allowing hydrous ferric and aluminum oxide or hydroxysulfate precipitation matched observed water quality conditions more closely than simulations without precipitation.

The revolution in development of new technology and practices in the gold mining and metallurgy industry continues unabated despite the ups and downs in the gold price. Some of the new cutting edge technologies are listed in Table 1 overleaf. There is room to discuss just a few of these here, but many more are identified and described in RANDOL (1992). Cutting edge advancements in gold recuperation, can be sorted into three categories. The first category includes fundamental advances that offer major improvement with significant economic benefits. Second would include evolutionary developments that offer smaller, but nonetheless commercially valuable improvements. Finally there are those "advances" that are interesting but of trivial or question­able economic benefit to industry. It is essential to adopt a "systems approach" philosophy towards developing and applying new technology. Practical innovation often comes about as a result of having to solve a problem. Innovation for innovation sake is an ego trip. Environmental management has become an important part of the system and the environmental implications of new processes and practices in the mine and mill have to be carefully considered for potential benefits and/or liabilities.

Bioleaching is an environmental friendly process that has gained much interest for the production of metals from metal-bearing wastes or materials. The process decreases carbon footprint by reducing consumption of fossil fuels. Iron is a key factor in acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria’s activity, which is used extensively in the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. In the present study, the effect of different iron sources is investigated on sphalerite (ZnS) bioleaching. For this purpose, the effects of FeSO4  .7H2O, Fe2(SO4  )3 and FeS2 (pyrite) were studied on bacterial activity, and zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) dissolutions were monitored from a ZnS concentrate. Under optimum conditions, the dissolutions of Zn, Pb, Cd and As were found to be 39.8, 0.1. 0.03 and 10 percent, respectively, in 25 days.

Prior to initiating construction of a new mineral development project, sponsoring organizations must be convinced that the operation will be viable. Proof is typically provided by the feasibility study. Considerable man hours will be spent in assessing and evaluating data on the deposit, its environment, and the means of development. Impact studies must be made for various scales of operation, inclusion of by-products, new methods of treatment, deferent levels of integration, and infrastructure configuration. Examples of current materials handling cost estimates are provided from the ongoing investigation in which Amoco is a participant at Ok Tedi in Papua New Guinea and Gag Island in Indonesia.

This paper reports on a study of the impact of fast growing new technologies on the market for copper over the next 15 to 20 years. The greatest threat is clearly the inroads of fiber optics on the traditional market for copper in communication cable. Opportunity areas identified include heat pumps, solar power and heat, desalination, electric vehicles and others. The overall impact of new technologies on copper is expected to be modestly positive if adequately encouraged by effective R&D.

The rapid and continuing expansion of computer and communication capability is giving birth to profound changes in the business environment. Some commentators hold that the basis of the world economy has already shifted from industry to information. Regardless of the overall implications of these changes, it is now clear that every company potentially has both access to and a need for much more information for decision making than was the case a few years ago. The importance of information to the mining industry has been underlined by the rash of unexpected economic and political developments and by the accompanying market volatility that have marked the past decade. It should be abundantly clear to even the smallest mine operator that the price for his output can be instantly affected by unexpected developments halfway across the world. Nevertheless, many mining companies still are much less sophisticated about information than they might be. For many, the historical feeling that information is an unnecessary luxury for a production-oriented business still seems to linger. On the other hand, the overwhelming volume of source material, uncertainty as to its accuracy, and the problems of finding relevant material when needed, presents stumbling blocks to viable systems of information management. Introduction When a company needs certain information, it has two basic alternatives. It can either research and develop the information in-house or pay for someone else to do it. Few mining companies have the in-house capability to assemble information needed for careful planning. On the other hand, companies often engage consultants to find information that is in fact easily accessible. All too often companies give up on procuring needed information because of the frustration of not being able to find it, and of not wanting to pay seemingly exorbitant sums for someone else to produce it. The result is poor planning. This article addresses two aspects of the information problem-finding the right sources and then accessing the particular information desired, especially as it pertains to nonferrous metal exploration and development issues. In the first section, major English-language sources that report on exploration and development (excluding primary sources of geological information, such as technical journals) are discussed.* In the second section, some available techniques for efficiently accessing this information are presented, focusing on the new MINESEARCH database system. Part One: The Information Following the News The most obvious way to follow exploration and mining developments from a distance is through regular mining media. Many active mining districts have local newspapers, usually published in the district's major towns, that give extensive coverage to miningrelated activities. For instance, to follow activities in Idaho's Coeur d'Alene silver district, one might subscribe to the Kellogg Wardner News and/or the Wallace Miner. Similarly, one might get the Sacramento Bee for news of current mining developments in north-central California. The American Metal Market, published in New York, is the daily newspaper that covers the metals industry as a whole, both in the US and abroad. Its coverage is weighted towards the refining, manufacturing, and consumption end of the business, but it frequently carries stories on mining activity, company dealings, and market outlooks. For news of major mining companies, the daily Wall Street Journal provides occasional coverage of North American companies, while the Financial Times of London serves as probably the best single source for worldwide company information. International Coverage There are three metals industry weeklies that have broad international coverage and readership. These are Metal Week, Metal Bulletin, and Mining Journal. Each has its strengths. Metals Week, a McGraw-Hill newsletter, focuses primarily on news of the metals markets, concentrating on those developments that are seen to most directly affect the price of nonferrous metals. Since 1974 researchers at Michigan Technological University have been studying mine subsidence in the Iron River District of Northern Michigan. The district, which was active from 1881-1978, has had numerous cases of subsidence. Much of the subsidence resulted from rock mass failure but some appeared to have developed primarily in the thick glacial overburden which is a typical feature of this area. This latter observation led to the recognition that some of the surface subsidence was due to piping; i .e., loss of overburden material to the mine voids by groundwater flow (Johnson and Frantti, 1978). The Sherwood Mine was the last mine to operate in the district. With its closedown scheduled for late summer of 1978, a unique opportunity to monitor the mine as it flooded was presented. It was reasoned that with the cessation of pumping, groundwater would rise in the overburden and the mine would flood. The physical characteristics of the mine were favorable for piping to occur as the mine flooded. With the permission of Inland Steel Mining Company and the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, a project to monitor the Sherwood Mine for piping subsidence began in June of 1978. This paper present aspects of this study pertinent to the piping-induced subsidence events which occurred at the Sherwood Mine in 1980 and 1981, including acoustic emission monitoring of the subsidence activity, hydrologic monitoring of the groundwater regime and the flooding mine, laboratory modeling of the piping mechanism, and analytic procedures which are under development.
