Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another evaluation system becoming increasingly more common for proposed projects is the Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluate potential impacts on public health, and its ecosystem services approach to assessing biodiversity impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. Conducting an ESHIA for a proposed mining development is not without its challenges, with costs, scheduling, regulatory concordance and other constraints to be considered. This paper examines some benefits and challenges of ESHIAs and summarizes lessons learned using a case study approach.

The Disputes Potential Index (DPI) is a computer program designed to help team mem¬bers assess the likelihood of contract disputes on a construction project. The program's predictions are based on data from 159 construction projects that encompass a variety of public and private projects. The impact of three categories of project characteristics are included in the DPI program, specifically, people, process and project characteristics. Ultimately, DPI returns an overall project score that indicates the likelihood of exces¬sive contract disputes. The output of a DPI analysis can be used as part of a contract readiness review or to define the need for extraordinary dispute avoidance procedures. This paper examines the development of DPI and presents the results of DPI analyses on several tunneling projects.

The design methodology of the planned Second Avenue Subway Project (SAS) led to development of the initial support design to estimate cost and quantities in the Preliminary Engineering (PE) stage. Careful selection of the cavern design rules that recognized the impact of rock quality, rock cover, excavation geometry, and excavation sequence helped to overcome the design challenges of large, shallow caverns for the initial ground support. In the course of the design verification process prescribed by the design methodology, the design team was continuously reviewing and updating the support quantities. The design procedure includes methods using different approaches of empirical, continuum, and discontinuum analyses, which are currently advanced in the Final Engineering (FE) stage. The paper is a continuation of the RETC 2005 “Trials and Tribulations” and focuses on the procedures that led to the changes in the initial support as a result of the ongoing design development.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL)1 of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Technical Support Center has devised a prototype hand-held instrument which can provide a direct assessment of the potential explosibility of a coal and rock dust mixture. Current Federal regulations require that rock dust be applied in all underground areas of a coal mine to mitigate the propagation of a coal dust explosion. To determine compliance with the Federal regulation, mine inspectors collect dust samples from sections of underground coal mines for an MSHA laboratory analysis of incombustible content. However, the laboratory analysis may not be completed for more than a week or two, during which time the mine area from which samples are taken may be inadequately protected. The operation of the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM) is based on the difference in optical reflectance between light rock dust and dark coal dust. For a given coal volatility, the optical reflectance of such mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of explosibility, independent of the coal dust particle size. The CDEM is not intended to replace the current MSHA laboratory analysis of coal mine dust samples for incombustible content, but to serve as a supplemental device for enhancing mine safety through improved rock dusting practices.

Universities are not immune from the large number of retirements facing the mining industry. Department heads anticipate that we will need to replace all of the senior mining engineering faculty in the U.S. by 2020. Long term studies of Ph.D. completion times and success rates indicate that in Engineering disciplines in the U.S., the ten year completion rate is 65% at best and the four year completion rate is less than 8%. We do not have accurate data on completion rates and times for mining or metallurgical engineering Ph.D. students in the U.S. but students self-report their expected completion times are around 4 years. National data on doctoral students indicate that younger, full time students with sufficient financial support have a higher probability of success in completing their degrees in a timely manner. Students in Eastern U.S. mining engineering programs are on average 32 years old, 85% are full time, and the gap between support and cost of attendance is $5,000 per year. Students in Western U.S. programs are on average 38 years old, 78% are full time, and the financial gap is $8,483. Further, it appears that domestic graduate students are not very geographically mobile. The current demand for new faculty is higher in Western programs but the longer term retirements are higher in Eastern programs. While all Ph.D. students who responded to the 2010 survey indicated an interest in a faculty position at some point in their careers, very few were applying for the open positions. Over the past 35 years for which data could be obtained, the maximum number of Ph.D. students enrolled in mining engineering in the U.S. is 115 with a maximum of 27 degrees granted in one year. On average 89 students are enrolled in doctoral programs in mining engineering in the U.S. with average degree production of 15 Ph.D.s per year.

Australia is the world's leading exporter in coal, iron ore, alumina, lead and zinc; and second largest in gold and uranium. While driving the economy, this resource boom has also created a demand for professional and operating talent that has far outstripped the capacity of Australia?s 21 million residents. I moved to Australia some 10 years ago and have not looked back. This unique island continent with its mix of Indigenous and diverse immigrants ? many still proud of their convict ancestry ? has offered life long memories both professionally and personally.

The $980m (€750m) Dublin Port Tunnel, Europe’s biggest urban highway tunnel project, was opened in December 2006. The culmination of this immense scheme is set to transform the environment, mobility and road safety of Ireland’s capital city. This paper summarizes the key aspects of a project linking both sequential and parallel construction of individual tunnels and describes various approaches to bored, mined and pre-support cut-and-cover tunneling in a wide variety of ground types and depth of cover. Examples of innovative approaches to deal with structural and geotechnical problems while maintaining full operation of both road and rail traffic and the integrity of properties in a dense urban corridor are described.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. In 1974, Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited started a 48 million dollar expansion programme at their property in Bathurst, New Brunswick. A portion of the expansion plans includes a 26 foot diameter 4,525 foot deep shaft, underground crusher and conveyor excavations and lower level access development. J. S. Redpath Limited was awarded the contract for the new shaft and associated rock work in May 1974. Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited, a member of the Noranda Group, operate this 10,000 ton per day lead, zinc, copper plant with proven reserves in excess of 90 million tons. While most of the ore is provided by the underground operation at the Number 12 ore body, some tonnage is produced from the open pit at the Number 6 ore body. Long range plans indicate a phasing out of the open pit and an increase in production from the underground operation. Existing facilities at the underground mine could not provide additional tonnage, thus the requirement for a new shaft. (Figure 1) The new shaft will also provide access to ore below the 2,800 level which is currently the bottom level of the existing facility. The contract called for sinking a 26 foot inside diameter, nine compartment concrete shaft 4,525 feet deep (Figure 2). Station access and ramp development from existing workings would be required to the bottom of the new shaft. In addition, development work for new crushing and conveying facilities was needed simultaneous with the shaft sinking.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations reluted to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 3’% to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 1% sulfur.

The underground industry has been forced to reconsider risk management sincethe introduction and implementation of the “Joint Code of Practice for Risk Management of Underground Works in the UK” published in 2003 and the subsequent international version published by the ‘International Tunneling Insurance Group’ (ITIG) in January 2006.What does this mean for major tunnel projects in the US and elsewhere? The discussion will highlight the implementation of the Codes to date, risk management principles embodied in the Codes and the use of risk registers as a projectmanagement tool and the management of risk.

A gas–solid fluidized bed using magnetite particles is an effective methodology for coal beneficiation in the field of dry coal cleaning. Broadening the size range of magnetite used in the bed decreases medium preparation cost. In this study, a tapered fluidized bed was used to investigate a magnetite particle size range of −0.5 + 0.074 mm. The results showed that a tapered fluidized bed effectively strengthens mixing of magnetite with a wide size range (−0.5 + 0.074 mm). The results of beneficiation experiments indicated that with increasing tapered angle, separation efficiency increased and then decreased. The highest separation efficiency was obtained at a tapered angle of 10°. The optimal results showed that the ash content of the concentrate decreased from 31.82% to 12.33% with a probable error of 0.11, which indicated that a tapered fluidized bed was efficient to improve fine coal beneficiation performance.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

Concentrating Line 6 just went down again. The control room operator checks the graphic display. Only one piece of equipment shows an alarm. Clicking on the ball mill icon, he discovers the culprit was the low flow lube switch. The flow looks okay now, but it is the third time this week the switch has stopped the line. Maintenance is called, the switch replaced and the line is up running again. Sending the right person to the right spot immediately can save hundreds of hours of downtime every year. This paper discusses the principles behind implementing smart First-Out Fault Detection to dramatically reduce equipment downtime in new, or existing control system architectures. Methodologies are presented to maximize the system benefits, while minimizing development costs. Case histories are presented for a number of successful implementations in mineral processing plants.

A case study is provided that highlights the successful use of high efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) adapted from the oil and gas industry for a large scale, open pit mine dewatering operation. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito Mine, Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit development areas in Zacatecas, Mexico. At the time of publication (July 2012), there were 18 vertical bedrock dewatering wells producing an average flow rate of 350 liters per second (lps) from the Peñasco and Chile Colorado development areas. Average pumping rate per well was 18 lps, with a maximum of 44 lps. The depth of wells varies from 330 m to 500m, and includes both in-pit and perimeter (ex-pit) pumping centers. A network of 50 piezometers was used to monitor the response of groundwater levels to pumping. Since dewatering operations were initiated in 2007, groundwater elevations decreased overall, from approximately 1950 m above sea level (masl) to around 1625 masl, for a total of 340 m of drawdown. The pit floor elevation was approximately 1655 masl. All of the producing wells were constructed with 16-inch boreholes, completed with 10-inch diameter blank casing and louvered screen sections and equipped with ESPs. The application of ESPs has proven to be highly effective in the case of Peñasquito?s dewatering operations. Noted advantages include the following: ? Small diameter pump allows use of smaller diameter boreholes (16 inches) and casing / screens (10 inches) reducing well drilling and construction costs ? Greater application range for flow rate and total dynamic head ? Variable speed drive systems for greater energy efficiency and flow rate optimization ? Integration of downhole instrumentation into the motor and pump assembly The advantages and benefits of using high efficiency ESPs revolutionized the dewatering program at Peñasquito open pit mine as evidenced by the number of deep vertical well installations and high dewatering flow rates and total dynamic head requirements.

A large lab apparatus was designed using a scale-down methodology based on the design legacy of the current FLSmidth commercial forced air flotation machines. This new apparatus, along with a new test methodology, was used to evaluate new rapid prototype concepts. The apparatus was designed to monitor bubble size, power, pumping capacity, Jg, velocity profiles, froth character, and tip speed. The methodology developed follows a sequence that goes from hydrodynamic tests and solids suspension tests to a flotation kinetic test. This methodology has been demonstrated to be a good tool to determine the effect of machine design changes on flotation.
