The amenability of carbonate separation from a sedimentary phosphate ore using a bioflotation process was studied. Two types of bacteria were chosen for this study. The experiments were performed using oleic acid as collector. The flotation experiments were carried out using statistical designs for optimizing the main operating parameters. A concentrate containing 0.78% MgO and 30.15% P2O5 with a recovery of 92.31% was obtained from a feed containing about 2.45% MgO and 27% P2O5. These specifications could not be obtained using conventional flotation experiments under similar conditions in the absence of bacteria. Measurements of zeta potential, adsorption of bacteria and collector, as well as froth power, were performed to explain the role of microorganisms in the surface modification of both dolomite and phosphate and in their interaction with the collector.

In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to be done, wet or dry or a combination?

An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s origins can be traced back to 1871. This was when 22 Pennsylvania coal mining engineers founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). The organization’s objective was to “promote the arts and sciences connected with economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in those industries by all lawful means.” Metallurgy and Petroleum were added to the AIME name in 1919 and 1956, respectively. Divisions of AIME were formed throughout the following years in recognition of the increasing trend toward specialization among mineral industry engineers. At the time, SME’s divisions consisted of the Coal Division (1930, now known as the Coal and Energy Division), the Industrial Minerals Division (1935), the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division (1948) and the Mining and Exploration Division (1949). The Environmental Division was created in 1997.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

When overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in openpit coal mines, the use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play. However, stability in the highwalls is always a major safety concern during such mining. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that highwall mining operators follow ground control plans that specify the pillar sizes necessary to prevent collapse that would threaten highwall stability.

The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

Ball Clay -- Four companies - H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Imerys Group (formerly Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co.), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. - mined ball clay in four states during 2010. Production, based on preliminary data, was 910 kt (1.11 million st) with an estimated value of $42.9 million. That was a 10-percent increase in tonnage from 831 kt (916 million st) with a value of $37.7 million that was produced in 2009. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of domestic production. It was followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 70 percent of production was airfloat, 20 percent was crude and 10 percent was water-slurried.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. The contract called for construction of two independent parallel concrete-lined tunnels in rock, soft-ground and mixed-face

Naturally occurring asbestos in aggregate and other mineral deposits, and the release of asbestos fibers into the ambient environment, is a public health concern. Determining the presence of asbestos in an ore body also presents a considerable sampling and analytical challenge. Improper and inaccurate identification of asbestos can result in unwarranted public and worker panic leading to significant costs to mine operators both in terms of dollars and company image. Some companies have been forced out of business simply because they had the non-asbestiform, prismatic variety of one of the six asbestos minerals. In the late 70’s, asbestos was found as a contaminate in a trap rock quarry in Rockville, Maryland. This discovery led to a massive overreaction by federal, state and local governments. In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule that regulated the common non-asbestiform mineral habits of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite as if they were asbestos. The rule was reversed after a six-year struggle. Recently, the Libby, Montana, W. R. Grace vermiculite - asbestos, as well as the California chrysotile in serpentinite, and the New Jersey Southdown quarry – asbestos events have rekindled the entire issue of naturally occurring asbestos. It is time to get this concern addressed with sound science so that real asbestos is properly identified and controlled.

The combined 79th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 67th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 11 and 12, 2006, in Duluth, MN. About 300 mining professionals attended, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s theme was “Success in the New World of Mining.” The SME Minnesota Section meeting included a keynote session, a special projects update, a general managers update and technical paper presentations. The University of Minnesota Mining Symposium program featured a panel discussion on Minnesota’s relationship with China. The combined meeting included a trade-show consisting of 64 booth spaces. Tradeshow demand exceeded expectations, and an additional 10 booth spaces were added in the registration lobby. Also included were an SME short course on pump basics and social events.

This work presents and discusses the influence of the surface tension (gLV) of methanol/water mixtures on the flotation response of apatite versus gangue minerals conditioned with flotation reagents (75 g/t cornstarch and 100 g/t Berol 867) at pH 10.6. Berol 867 is a collector composed of sodium alkyl sarcosinate plus nonionic surfactant. The highest Schulz efficiency of separation (recovery of apatite minus recovery of gangue) was achieved at ?51.0 mN/m. The critical surface tension of wettability (gC) of apatite was found to occur at 34.7 mN/m when determined by means of gamma flotation experiments, and it was 33.9 mN/m when determined by Zisman?s approach.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

G.F. Learning The paper by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard is a wonderful description of the labyrinthine web that has been spun about the mining industry by energetic bureaucrats and politicians over the past 50 years. The remedy for the problem, however, is not more of the same, but less. That may be difficult for the industry to achieve, for it is not a technical solution but a political one. And the current fervor for more detailed planning at all levels of government and private enterprise has become deeply ingrained. The authors recommend the provision of more information about mining and mineral resources to "macro" (i.e., government) land use planners. They apparently overlook, however, the already strong tendency on the part of most government land use planners to consider themselves omniscient. Thus, giving them more information about the technical problems of mining will only make them want to get more and more involved in the "micro" (private, site specific) mine development and production plans of the individual mining firm. In fact, this has already happened at all levels of jurisdiction from municipal to federal government. Examples are legion. The most effective way to ameliorate the adverse impacts of government land use planning on existing and potential mining operations is to: (1) introduce greater flexibility in the definition of land use zones by local and state governments; (2) adopt realistic and relevant ambient environmental performance standards in governing relationships between mineral land uses and concurrent or subsequent nonmining land uses; (3) allow greater leeway for economic considerations in land use decisions in contrast to the explicit legalistic approach now in vogue; (4) recognize that all minerals are not the same and that sand and gravel mining should not be treated the same as underground metal mining, coal stripping, oil field production, or in situ leaching; and (5) eliminate the notion that mining operators should be responsible for determining in detail the use of land by subsequent owners of mined land. This last bit of conventional ethic really makes no more sense than requiring the builders of every shopping center or government office complex to provide detailed plans for the use of that land when its use for shopping or government is ended. Did the builder of Ebbetts Field plan for Brooklyn after the Dodgers went to Los Angeles? Should the developer of the Bingham Pit plan for suburban Salt Lake City after the copper mining goes to Chile? The nation's mining industry must address these questions before further bankrupting itself to provide more data to planners and spending thousands of dollars per acre to create land that when reclaimed is worth only a few hundred dollars per acre. Reply by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard We thank Mr. Leaming for his valuable contribution. His views on the problems of land use planning and mineral resources are most welcome additions to our paper. As the title indicates, our paper was more concerned with the impacts of land use planning on mineral resource conservation than with the details of the planning process. On the whole, his five recommendations would be helpful for mineral resource conservation. However, we would suggest that the argument he presents for his final recommendation does not address the differences between mining as a land use and commercial or institutional uses. We believe that this difference is the crux of the issue. We share Mr. Leaming's desire to ameliorate the adverse impacts of land use planning. Possibly the most detrimental impact is the loss of mineral resources. Any development, whether mineral or community, that does not give proper consideration to other resources can result in permanent loss or sterilization of resources. With proper planning, some of these losses can be avoided. As our paper indicated, one factor that limits the consideration of mineral resources, and ultimately leads to their sterilization, is the generally inadequate levels of resource characterization and understanding of the unique nature of mineral resources and mining operations. The last point raised by Mr. Leaming is also important. In terms of reclamation and land use planning in mining districts, we certainly do not advocate spending more than what the results are worth. The main thrust of the paper was to explore the avenues for conserving the mineral resources so that, at some appropriate time, the issue of mining and reclamation can still be addressed.
