Since 2001, CVRD is carrying out a modernization project in it’s pelletizing plant’s automation systems, that comprehends instrumentation, control and information systems. In addition, the project includes implementation of advanced control systems, using artificial intelligence techniques, including fuzzy logic, expert systems and dynamic physical models, to increase production, reduce fuel and energy consumption and improve quality. This paper reports CVRD’s experiences in carrying out an optimization project.

In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.

MARTA, The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is building a 53 mile heavy rail transit system to serve the City of Atlanta. Phase A of the Rail System, consisting of approximately 14 miles of at-grade, aerial and subway construction is underway. Metropolitan Atlanta lies in the Piedmont Geologic province of Georgia and is underlain by rocks of essentially granitic and gneissic nature. The soils encountered are primarily silty sands which are in-place weathering products of the parent rock and exhibit their relic structure. In general, these materials have presented no unique construction problems other than those created-by proximity of manmade structures, local availability of ground water, and top of rock elevation. The subway sections of primary interest in this paper consist of hardrock and soft ground tunnels and extensive cut-and-cover sections. The cut-and-cover construction includes excavations as deep as 80 feet. Temporary support systems in these deep excavations consist of soldier pile-timber-lagging or soldier pile-tremie concrete (SPTC) walls with internal bracing or tiebacks. In shallow cut-and-cover sections, where right-of-way economics permitted, slopes were laid back partially or fully to reduce or eliminate the need for bracing systems. Operations at the Sweet Home Mine transformed the mineral specimen industry, not only in the development of new innovative extraction techniques, but also in the fields of sample preparation and marketing. Principally as a result of the activities at the Sweet Home Mine, there is now a better appreciation of minerals and the market they encompass. Individual Sweet Home rhodochrosite specimens have been sold for more than $1 million, with many more in the five- and six-figure dollar range. This article is a review of the Sweet Home operation, with emphasis on its extraction techniques. District history The Sweet Home Mine is located within the Alma mining district in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado, approximately 6 km (3.7 mile) northwest of the town of Alma at the base of the Red Amphitheatre in Buckskin Gulch at an elevation of 3,440 m (11,286 ft). Other nearby mining districts include Climax, Leadville, Breckenridge and London. All are considered part of central portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt (Fig. 1).

The LCLS project at SLAC will allow new insights into material properties, chemical reactions and biological processes. The project includes half a mile of new underground construction. Excavation in weathered rock is by NATM, using AM 50 roadheaders. Construction began in 2006 and is expected to be completed in 2008. This paper details the construction of the tunnels and cavern on the project.

Many changes have taken place in the "World Cement Market" since Joseph Aspdin discovered portland cement in the early 1800's. At the turn of the century, production of cement world wide was a few million tons; today, it is over one billion tons. By 1995, world production is estimated to reach 1.2 billion tons. Cement processing has changed from inefficient, small vertical kilns to large efficient, precalcining kilns, and large automated crushing, blending and grinding systems. Consequently the cost of production has declined in real terms, resulting in significant economic benefits to the general public. In addition, quality and uniformity of cement have increased, strengths have increased, and at least 25% fewer pounds of cement are needed for each cubic yard of concrete. Today, cement moves thousands of miles on the inland rivers and great lakes of the U. S., across Siberia and across the oceans of the world. The volume of cement moving more than a few hundred miles is almost 100 million tons, or 10% of world production. Today, on a per ton basis, it costs no more to move 40,000 tons of cement to the United States from the Western Pacific rim or from Europe than it does to truck cement 200 miles. For example, cement shipped by water from Spain costs $5.00 to $7.00 per ton compared to cement shipped by truck 200 miles at $16.00 per ton. This low cost water transportation has been a major factor for the increased movement of cement between countries. Table 1, Cement Production Summary-World, gives a global picture of production, export and import tonnages in recent years. Figure 1 is a graph showing CEMENT PRODUCTION SUMMARY WORLD WIDE.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. PSC has been involved with the mineral sands business for several years with senior staff having in excess of 30 years global industry experience. In the Canadian mining industry, there are at present no comprehensive regulations or standards for valuation of mineral properties. In January 1999, the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. The authors were subsequently appointed Co-chairs of the CIM Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). A committee of experts from the mining industry, consulting, financial and legal communities was established with the task of reviewing available information, investigating various valuation methodologies and practices, soliciting input from interested parties, and recommending a Canadian code or standards plus guidelines for the valuation of mineral properties. As an initial stage of its work, the CIMVal Committee organized a one day session at the Mining Millennium 2000 Convention in Toronto in March 2000 on valuation of mineral properties. The 10 invited papers have been published by CIM. As a second stage, CIMVal has requested input and comments from all interested parties. The next stage will be to prepare a preliminary draft with a recommended code or standards and guidelines. This will be circulated for further input and comments prior to revision and publication of another draft. The final CIMVal report should be completed in early 2001. A variety of methods are in common usage for the valuation of mineral properties, depending on the stage of development of the property, the data available and the experience of the valuator. For example, the discounted cash flow method is commonly used for properties in production or at the feasibility stage, but is not generally considered appropriate for exploration properties. Market approaches such as comparable transactions are in wide general use, and various cost approaches are used for exploration properties. The option pricing approach has promise for valuation of marginal properties, but is not commonly used.

The beginning of 21st century has heralded the global strategic importance, as evidenced by increase in energy prices and energy generation-emission-utilization dilemmas. In January 2008, the South African energy supplier, ESKOM had tabled the concept of power conservation and acknowledged the energy crisis until 2016. The concept is required of all energy users to reduce their electricity consumption, intensify energy efficiency and cautiously proceed with new projects. The generation of energy results in by-products called ?green house gases? (GHGs). To make a positive response to climate change and their effect on the environment, every energy user must ensure efficient energy use through technical and administrative means referred to generally as energy savings. This paper identifies mine ventilation engineering, in particular the electricity consumed by main fan units, as an area of potential energy savings. For a major mining company, electricity consumed by main ventilation fans alone can be in the order of 120 MW. Although a known fan engineering technique but scantly applied technology identified as the Hermit Crab can be seen as a ?quick win? project, due to its success in other industries such as cement and steel. The ?Hermit Crab? technique® involves upgrading or replacement of an impeller - whatever its origin - with a design impeller to suit the actual ventilation requirements, resulting in increased fan efficiencies. The cash flow benefits associated with a case study and its rollout of this technology have been calculated. For a 10% increase in main fan efficiency, would have a net present benefit of US$ 16.08m over 10 years. With the inclusion of carbon credits, this benefit rises to US$ 29.40m in total. Application of other available technologies, viz., composite materials, ventilation-on-demand and variable speed drives are discussed.

Recent advances in digital cameras and image processing allow photographers to produce excellent high-resolution action shots in low light and high contrast conditions commonly encountered underground. Digital photography is often used for construction and inspection documentation for underground structures. Designers, owners, and contractors benefit from quality photographs that document incremental progress and project milestones. Documentation photos serve as a lasting record of as-built conditions, are an important marketing tool, and help the owner build public support for expensive public works projects. When the project is complete, the only mementos that the participants will hold onto are the photographs.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). Diffusion phenomena in mine airways are important to trace gas and dust introduced into mine ventilation flows. Authors have carried out tracer gas measurements to check mine ventilation using concentration-time curves measured in mine airways, however dispersion mechanism to enhance effective diffusion have not been cleared. A numerical model using discrete tracer points dosed into tube flow has been presented to simulate their movements in consideration of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation. Numerical simulations have been carried out to predict distributions of dosed points in tube flows with turbulent velocity profile, turbulent intensity profile and Reynolds stress. The numerical simulation results show that a combination of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation creates extremely large dispersion of points in longitudinal direction and concentration curve with long tail was observed. This dispersion by velocity profile and fluctuation contributes large effective diffusion coefficient compared with original diffusion coefficient dominating in uniform velocity fields. Furthermore, the effect of Reynolds stress on the concentration-time curves is discussed.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a multi-purpose urban public works project with a total cost of $3.7 billion. Currently 51 miles of TARP tunnels are completed and operational and 34 miles are under construction. The excavated TARP tunnels have been constructed in rock utilizing 29 tunnel boring machines, ranging in size from 6.5 to 35.3 feet in diameter.

Pre-excavation grouting is a predictable and reliable technique performed to prevent or minimize settlement in advance of, or during the tunneling operation. It safeguards the infrastructure above the tunnel alignment. Cement based suspension grouts and sodium silicate based grouts are frequently injected to consolidate and strengthen the formation and create a reinforced canopy above the tunnel trajectory. Grouting is typically performed through permeation and permeation in conjunction with hydrofracturing. Multiple injection passes through steel sleeve pipes are ideal, since they create an effective forespiling system to facilitate tunneling without causing unacceptable settlement, even with minimal overburden thickness. Ten pre-excavation grouting projects performed in the North America are discussed in this paper.

Hydrogen is regarded as being a high temperature indicator of spontaneous combustion. It is currently used in underground coal mines to detect advanced heating?s. Previous work has mostly consisted of small scale tests with high air flow to mass ratios. A large-scale test rig has been used to investigate the gas indicators of coal self-heating. In particular, the relationship of gas evolution, the location of its evolution and the temperature at which it is evolved has been examined. It has been found that there are two distinct zones of hydrogen production: one at the hot spot and the other in an oxygen deficient moist zone downstream from the hot spot which is at a relatively low temperature of approximately 100°C. This has implications for the interpretation of mine atmospheres.

Tunnel damage from explosion and earthquake excitation is correlated with strain and particle motions. Critical strains and motions are then correlated with focal distance, which is so small that permanent strains are highly likely. The shaking process is then numerically modeled to investigate the effects of excitation frequency and joint orientation. The models confirm that near cavern blocks slide intermittently only at relatively high particle velocities during periods of low joint normal stress. Larger displacements occur with relatively small shear wave lengths or relatively high frequencies. Variation in joint orientation and rock mass dilation result in changes in displacement.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. Radon progeny have been a health and safety concern for miners since the mining of radioactive minerals began. Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.
