This paper reviews some of the factors involved in selecting amine flotation reagents used to remove silica from ores. A comparison is made between the chemical reagent design approaches used to identify flotation reagents that are used to recover silica- and oxygen-containing minerals and the chemical reagents used to recover sulfide minerals. This introduction gives practitioners who are involved with oxide- and carbonate-type minerals and who may not be familiar with sulfide mineral flotation some ideas of the chemical reagent design challenges that exist with froth flotation on a broader scale and why oxide type mineral flotation reagents are what they are. This is followed by several sections that discuss various classes of available amines. The closing sections emphasize that the optimal choice of an amine collector depends not only on that amine's specific chemical characteristics and costs but also on the operating conditions, especially the flotation feed particle size distribution.

The Reverse Curve Tunnel Project was located in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado approximately twelve (12) miles east of Glenwood Springs. The Project was one of many being constructed over a period of time by the State of Colorado, Department of Highways to improve Interstate 70 to four lanes as it travels thru the environmentally sensitive Glenwood Canyon. The Project consisted of excavating and concreting a tunnel approximately five hundred fifty (550) feet long, forty two (42) feet wide, and thirty two (32) feet high. The designer was Parsons, Brinkerhoff, Quade and Douglas, with geotechnical consultation provided by Woodward Clyde. CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES There were several significant construction challenges presented primarily by the physical location of the Project. In this study each problem will be discussed, as well as how it was overcome by construction methods and/or design requirements. Portal Excavation - One of the most difficult areas of work on the Project consisted of excavation and stabilizing the East and West Portal rock prior to tunnel excavation. The Reverse Curve Tunnel passes through a sheer walled cliff face which is approximately two hundred fifty (250) feet high. Geologically the cliff consists of primarily sedimentary deposits with open, weathered joints and vertical faulting. Application of shallow, seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection and environmental evaluation has been successful in many geologic settings. The increased dynamic range of recording equipment and the decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow, seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m (10 ft) in coal seams as thin as 2 m (6.5 ft) at depths of 200 m (655 ft). Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m (65 ft) can he detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt. Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been mapped with high-resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 m (260 ft) to more than 300 m (985 ft). Faults in sulfur-hearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

John D. Maefadyen Subject paper unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that sulfur is the major source of production problems in cement kilns. This is not the case. Sulfur is not a problem as long as the mole ratio of sulfur to alkali oxides is less than, or equal to, 1. This is attributed to the sulfur preferentially combining with the alkali oxides and not acting as a clogging agent due to the nature of the pre-heater vessels. Where the mole ratio exceeds 1, many methods are available to eliminate or reduce the clogging problems such as using the preheater bypass or a precalciner with up to 100% kiln gas bypass. In non-preheater kilns, the presence of sulfates is hardly ever a problem anyhow. Thus, the level of sulfur in the fuel and raw material that might cause problems is not a fixed amount, but is predictable. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the economics of conversion of kilns in the Indonesian and Phillippine cement industries from oil firing to coal firing. This economic analysis has very little to do with the sulfur levels. Thus, the section of the paper on sulfates is actually rather meaningless. The economic analysis is also rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow accepted economic analysis procedures by including interest charges. They have fallen into the trap of confusing financing with economic evaluation. When the accepted methods of economic evaluation are used, the return on investment increases to about 35%. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous.

The Northeast Raw Water Tunnel transports untreated water to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department's (DWSD) Northeast Water Plant where it is treated and distributed. The occurrence of a subsidence area which was attributed to the tunnel prompted the DWSD to have the tunnel investigated. After an extensive historical and geotechnical investigation, two access shafts were constructed along the alignment in the vicinity of the subsidence. Following completion of the shafts, the subsidence area was inspected in the wet prior to dewatering the tunnel. Upon the completion of dewatering, a dry inspection was performed. During the dry inspection, an area of significant distress was encountered where sand and silt were boiling into the tunnel along with large volumes of groundwater. This distressed area was located 800m (1/2 mile) north of the original subsidence area. The tunnel was immediately refilled with water and an emergency repair program was planned and implemented. As a result of the distressed nature of the secondary tunnel liner, dewatering of the tunnel could not be performed until the secondary liner and the surrounding soils were stabilized. This paper presents a case history of both the investigation and the repairs of the Northeast Raw Water Tunnel including the various grouting and unique tunnel stabilization methodologies which were utilized.

The study area is located in the Alpine-Himalayan zone in Turkey. Geologically, this is a very complicated region, and the rock units generally are divided into two groups as either allochthonous and autochthonous. Tectono-stratigraphically, the units are Paleozoic quartzite, black limestone, arkosic sandstone, interlaminated radiolarite and Triassic limestone, thick Jurassic limestone, detritic limestone with alternating Eocene Nummulites beds and cream-green marl, Miocene siltstone, and ophiolite. Trachyte, trachyandesite, feldspathoidal trachyandesite porphyry, tuff, and pumice formed by volcanism during the Plio-Quaternary also are present. Recent alluvium and slope detritus locally cover all the other rock units. A number of sulfur outcrops occur in the area. Among them are outcrops at Keciborlu, Yelliyatak Hill, Buyuk, and Kucuk Kukurt Dere. The most important sulfur deposits are found in volcanic tuff and siltstone-marl, and they include highly organic material. Sulfur may accumulate around recent gas diffusions and also as massive formations. The information about local geology and sulfur isotopes shows that the sulfur originated From the crust and probably comes from organic-rich Paleozoic and Triassic units. The sulfur did not move between Triassic and Pliocene time. However. Plio-Quaternary volcanism did cause movement of the sulfur, and this was followed by formation of the secondary sulfur due to post-tectonic thermal activities and the mixing of other surface waters.

During the production of silicon carbide a by-product is generated, which contains a mixture of crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide. Utilizing the difference in density, shape and surface properties of the crystalline and amorphous silicon carbide, separation tests were carried out with gravity concentration and flotation equipment. The flotation results of the fine fraction of the silicon carbide mixture were not encouraging. The processing of the coarse fraction of the silicon carbide mixture by jigs resulted in a high grade crystalline SiC concentrate with the desired specifications. The separation was largely influenced by the shape factor. An IHC-jig with a newly designed hydraulic drive was used to carry out the test program.

The general role of geology in the location of different types of large underground chambers is discussed. Aspects of structure, rock type and state of stress are discussed at some length. Some practical implications on stability of observations about the attitude, spacing and persistence of structural features are made. Characteristics and likely problems inherent to rock types (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) are discussed. Observations regarding the uniformity of stress conditions within a physiographic province are presented. The influence of stresses parallel to the chamber axis on wedge movements is briefly discussed.

In 1911, Miami Copper Co. began a block caving operation at its Miami, AZ property. A gravity mill was used to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. Until 1932, the mill tailings were deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill. In 1928, the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed. By 1932, it was receiving all tailings. In 1925, Miami Copper converted the gravity mill to flotation with sulfide copper recoveries. From 1934 to 1943, Miami, Copper ran a leach-precipitate float (LPF) circuit on mined ore and, in 1943, began sulfuric acid in-place leaching of a portion of the caved area formed by block caving. The pregnant solutions were collected underground and pumped to the LPF precipitating drums to harvest copper. In 1954, the company started mining low-grade ore. This led to the running an old LPF plant on select mill tailings from April 1957 to March 1959. In 1959, block-cave mining ceased. Solution mining became the only source of production using a launder precipitation plant. In the mid-1960s, Miami Copper merged with the Tennessee Corp. In the latter part of the decade, Cities Service Co. bought the combined properties. In 1976, Cities Service commissioned a 15-t/d (16.5-stpd) solvent extraction electrowinning(SX-EW) facility at its Miami copper property to replace the precipitation plant. In 1982, Occidental Petroleum Co. bought Cities Service. In 1983, the Miami operations were sold to Newmont Mining Corp. and set up as a subsidiary company, Pinto Valley Copper Corp. Finally, in 1987, Newmont Mining spun off a combined Pinto Valley and San Manuel unit as Magma Copper Co.

Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

P. T. Pacific Nikkel Indonesia (PTPNI) was incorporated in Jakarta, Indonesia in February, 1969 by a group of Dutch and North American companies. At the same time, a Contract of Work with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia was signed, granting Pacific Nikkel all the necessary licenses and permits to explore and develop all nonradioactive minerals in two separate areas in Irian Jaya, eastern Indonesia. Nickel mineralization occurrences were confirmed by Dutch geologists in the two areas in 1952 and 1955, however, detailed exploration began in June 1969 after the Contract of Work was signed. Since that time, numerous studies and investigations have been conducted to determine the feasibility of producing metallic nickel in Irian Jaya. Four engineering studies, two bulk sample tests, an oceanographic survey, and a preliminary site investigation indicated that construction and operation of a nominal 100 million pounds per year metallic nickel plant on Gag Island were technically feasible. The fourfold increase in the price of oil in late 1973 without a corresponding adjustment in the price of nickel necessitated a reevaluation of the project, the results of which showed that the project required other conditions to be viable. Subsequently, analysis of: the future projected nickel supply-demand and cost-price relationships, the economics of treating a higher grade feed, and participation by the Government of Indonesia, indicate that the project will be viable. Therefore, planning of the Gag Island Nickel Laterite Project is continuing with the objective of commencing production to supply the market in the 1983-1984 time period.

The contribution of the various outby sources to the contamination of the panel intake air has been the subject of a relatively small number of studies. In this paper, after a brief review of past studies, results from recent experiments on rates of contamination of intake air by outby dust sources are presented. Present study indicates that each outby source by itself may not be a major contributor. The loading point in the continuous miner section did not appear to be of major concern from contamination point of view. Belt entry including transfer point contributes significantly to the intake air dust level, though reentrainment was not a major source of dust. In longwall panels, the stageloader-crusher was the most dominant source. The panel-to-main belt transfer point was not a major source. Taken collectively, the contribution of all outby sources can be significant. In one longwall section, at the beginning of the longwall face, the contribution of all the outby sources and the headgate cut-out operation was observed to be about 80% of the permissible exposure limit (2 mg/m3). In modem high production longwalls, the application of effective dust control measures to reduce the dust generated from the outby sources is essential to achieve compliance with the dust standards.

The American Borate Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Owens Corning Fiberglas Company under a management contract to the Hanna Mining Company, owns and operates an underground borate mine in Death Valley, California. The mine, named the Billie Mine, is located 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Furnace Creek along Highway 190. The ore body is under Death Valley National Monument with the major portion of the surface facilities located just outside the monument boundary. (See Figure 1.) The Billie Mine produces approximately 227 000 metric tons of crude ore per year. About 65% of finished product is supplied to Owens-Corning, the remainder is sold to other fiberglass producers. Geology The borate minerals in the Billie ore body were deposited in the lower main member of the Furnace Creek Formation, which is Pliocene in age. The ore body is thought to have formed from volcanic springs in or near a small lake basin. The deposit is essentially a limestone breccia that is permeated with borate minerals and surrounded with limey lake bed mudstones and shales. The ore body is mineralized with two main borate ores, colemanite and probertite. A third borate ore, ulexite, mainly occurs in the upper part of the ore body. The original mineral of deposition is thought to have been ulexite. Ulexite is a sodium-calcium borate hydrated with eight molecular waters. Due to heat and pressure from burial by later sediments, the ulexite had water forced out of its structure and recrystallized as probertite. I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, I. K., and Ramani, R. V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability char¬acteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting. September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design." 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium. September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important
