The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has constructed two biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water from the Forest Queen Mine near Silverton, CO. The bioreactors coupled with a natural wetland provide treatment to the Forest Queen Mine drainage. The central objective of this paper is to review the performance of the bioreactors and wetland treatment system. The bioreactors have been in operation for nine years and along with the natural wetland are still removing a high percentage of the influent metals.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. The zeolites review arrived too late for the June issue. The natural zeolite industry continues to grow even as some companies look for the exits. Production for 1993 was estimated at between 42 and 44 kt (46,000 and 48,000 st). That is between 7 and 9 kt (7700 and 9900 st) above 1992 production. GSA Resources, Saint Cloud Mining, Steelhead Specialty Minerals, Teague Minerals, UOP and Zeotech all reported continued growth last year. At the same time the East-West Minerals' Eastgate mordenite mine, and American Resources' Ash Meadows clinoptilolite operations both shut down their processing plants and are attempting to sell the mines and facilities. In addition, Tenneco Minerals continued its attempt to sell the Mud Hills clinoptilolite deposit. Unimin entered the natural zeolite industry through its acquisition of several properties of Aimcor. This paper presents the use of the Jaggi-Freedman model for deriving composite environmental sustainability indicators at the mine level (i.e. indicators which focus on both the environmental and economic dimension of the sustainable development) using environmental, economic and/or integrated indicators (i.e. indicators which inter-relate two dimensions of sustainability). The derivation of composite environmental sustainability indicators by means of the Jaggi-Freedman model concerns the South-Field lignite mine of Public Power Corporation (PPC) in Western Macedonia. In the light of the results of the present paper it is evident that the performance of South-Field mine, during 1986-1990, was the exclusive domain of large production yearly activities. The considerably low indicators? scores during the 1986-1987 period are attributed to the increased environmental impacts and electrical energy consumed. The merit of this framework is that it can be used both internally, for benchmarking purposes and externally, for sustainability reporting.

In 1989, William A. Vogely created the Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS). He did this after SME disbanded the Minerals Resource Management Committee, a group dedicated to technical programming of minerals economics and management issues. A few years later, SME reinstated this committee. MEMS held its fourth annual conference "Mineral resources: Managing dilemmas and opportunities," in Boulder, CO March 9-11, 1995. Some of the MEMS programs are similar to the Minerals Resource Management Committee programs. However, MEMS conferences cover more diverse issues. These include minerals policy, environmental legislation impacts on the minerals industry and minerals economics issues. The 1995 MEMS conference included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. Papers topics included US and Canadian mineral policy, financial strategies for managing mining companies, Latin American mineral investment opportunities, quantitative economic modeling and the impact of environmental interest groups on the minerals sector in the United States and Canada. One session was dedicated to students who competed for $1900 in prizes for outstanding papers.

It is common knowledge that there is an endless stream of possibilities, proposals, and projects - each representing a demand on available capital - for improving the mining company's performance measure. It is true that these proposals go through an increasingly stringent evaluation process as they move up the echelons of management for approval. Therefore, there is every reason to expect that a proposal or project accepted for deployment will make a substantial contribution to the organization's performance. The reality, too often, is otherwise. Castle (1985) reveals some significant insights into the difficulties in predicting the performances in the mining industry. A sample of eighteen mining ventures, which have been developed over the years, was selected by Castle to illustrate the problems. The actual performances were compared with the original projection. The sample encompasses both surface and underground mines, a large number of commodities, and a wide geographic distribution. The experiences in these mining projects were analyzed through answers to four specific questions.

Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. (KACC) had been discharging spent bauxite-generally referred to as red mud-into the Mississippi River for almost 20 years when, in 1972, it agreed to store the waste solids on land. KACC decided to utilize a DREW system (decantation, drainage, and evaporation of water) where the spent bauxite is deposited in a large drying bed, surrounded by a 9-m-high levee. At the bottom of the bed, corrugated, perforated plastic pipe is encased in filter sand. The company built one DREW bed at Gramercy, LA, in 1973 and a second at Baton Rouge in 1974 using draglines, tractors, and rubber-tired scrapers. When a third bed was needed in 1977, the estimated construction cost using draglines was judged too high and KACC personnel began searching for a better, less expensive method for constructing the levee. A bucket-wheel excavator and conveyor system was selected and has proved to be less costly than more traditional earth-moving systems.

CRYSTALLIZATION from aqueous solution is a simple and old method for the recovery of metal values from leach solution. Practically all the methods for the recovery of aluminum from clay are based on the crystallization of an aluminum salt from the leach solution. Differences in solubilities may be used to advantage for separating two metals from the same leach solution. The classical method of Marignac (1866), which makes use of the difference in solubilities of K2TaF7 and K2NbOF5 to separate niobium from tantalum, has been used successfully in the manufacture of these metals (Fig. 10-1). The slurry containing the metal oxides is dissolved in 70 % hydrofluoric acid, diluted, and heated near boiling. A potassium salt is added in sufficient quantity to form the complex fluorides of the niobium and tantalum present. The solution is filtered and allowed to cool. At room temperature most of the tantalum salt crystallizes out while the niobium remains in solution.

Robotics is topical for mining owing to deterioration of miner's safety as a depth of winning, limited functions of traditional mechanization and automation, rise of miner's labor cost. Mining robot is an autonomous mining machine with a free programmable control that provides a multifunctional use of working head. After analysis of world publications the database “Technological applications of robotics in mining" has been built. In most cases robots are suggested for imitation of miner's motions. The following shapes of robotics had been classified for mining: technological robot as a flexible controlled mining machine, remote manipulator, mine rescue robot. The problems of both non-repeated environment recognition and telepresence without direct visibility must be solved. The more a robots integration is the less investments and the more efficiency are. Computer simulation of robotics-based mining is founded on a base of 6 robots functional models, Petri nets and library of 30 robotized technologies. There are some examples of mine robotization in the paper.

The Department of Control Systems and Instrumentation, VSB - the Technical University Ostrava, has been involved in a project dealing with utilization of landfill gases, when the methane gas utilization and minimization of its release into the atmosphere was the main concern. The landfill site is generally a place, where technology for energy production can be built. The conditions for this technology implementation vary and depend on various factors. This paper is presenting findings and experience gained regarding a method of methane gas utilization for energy production. This method is concerning building bioreactors at the landfill sites, which are already operated. Every bioreactor can be thought of as a process, which is controlled in order to maximize energy production and minimize the methane gas escape into the atmosphere. The bioreactor landfill can represent a number of environmental and cost savings and, at the same time, is able to comply with all legislative issues.

Shotcrete, a useful support material in underground openings, is a sprayed concrete, and, when used with fast-setting agents, is immediately self-supporting. Although shotcrete has been used extensively for tunnel support, the technique has not been readily accepted by the mining industry because of the lack of essential information on such basic items as material properties and rock interaction. The Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) of the Bureau of Mines has been active in the field for the past 2 years, including research on fibrous reinforced shotcrete. IIT Research Institute, Chicago, under Bureau of Mines contract, is investigating physical properties of shotcrete as affected by (1) type of process (wet or dry) and (2) fast-set agents and controlle-dset cements. Already the contractor has shown the advantage of a regulated-set cement over normal cement and fast-set additives for the dry process. The regulated-set cements can produce high early strengths with no decrease in ultimate strength.

Volcanogenic base metal ores contain about 0.5 to 7 g/T Au, commonly as an intermetallic compound with Ag and/or Hg, and to a small extent • "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase (electrum, Au-Ag-Hg alloy, etc.) generally occurs as fracture fillings in pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, and rarely • minute inclusions in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Au-bearing phase in fractures generally occurs • small grains, and is frequently associated with galena, tetrahedrite and other late minerals. The gold is readily liberated from fractures and recovered by flotation in Ca concentrates. Copper concentrates usually recover around 60% of the gold when the ore grade is around 3 g/t. Higher recoveries are obtained for higher ore grades, and lower recoveries for lower grade ores. Lead and zinc circuits act as scavengers for gold, and recover all the exposed gold attached to small particles. Only unliberated gold, "invisible gold" and very minute gold grains attached to large particles are lost to tailings.

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems are currently recognized as a necessary tool for the management of projects. Currently, CAD is used for TBM and conveyor setups, concrete lift design and overall constructability reviews. Typically, such CAD models exist only in 2 dimensions. The advent of more powerful computers, enhanced CAD programs and after market animation packages provides tremendous potential to the Tunneling industry. In particular, effective application of these technologies enhances cost, time and quality in field operations.

The data of Dunn and Martin (1978) is reanalyzed using a rigorous application of Hertzian theory to the impact process. The Young's modulus of steel required to fit their data to the theory is a factor of about 10 3, too low compared to the values quoted for steels. Thus, doubt is thrown on the validity of their experimental technique, and it is possible that their values for maximum impact force and stress are far too low.

Beat exchange in an open air-water system is considered. The system incorporates a vertical cooling tower, and a horizontal multi-stage spray chamber with unlimited number of stages. Mixing of two streams of both water and air is permitted. A spread-sheet implementation estimates temperatures of outgoing water and air for given mass flow of water and air, factor of merit for heat exchangers, barometric pressure, wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, and the temperature of incoming water.

Specifically, the activities of well installation, deposit data acquisition, leach testing and equipment development are reviewed. Installation and operation of the test facility are described.

The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.
