"The Port Mann Main Water Supply Tunnel involves a 1km long tunnel beneath the Fraser River from Surrey to Coquitlam, BC. At depths of up to 60 m below ground, the earth pressure reached 6 bar. The tunnel is constructed using an EPB TBM and gasketed precast concrete segmental liner. The tunnel and two shafts were constructed in a variety of soil conditions ranging from soft to stiff clays and silts, to compact to very dense sands and gravels. After approximately 800m of mining, a very dense and highly variable soil group consisting of cobbles and boulders halted the TBM. Several options were considered to stabilize the TBM face so an intervention could be conducted. Although de-watering was considered, there was risk of settlement to the Port Mann bridge piers, which was within 500m of the tunnel. Hyperbarics were also considered, however, the cost, schedule and uncertainty of the work that needed to be done, made it a risky option. Ground freezing by Liquid Nitrogen was chosen as the best solution, which would provide a frozen block around the face of the TBM. A temporary platform on the river was designed and constructed to enable drilling and installation of the freezing pipes and temperature monitoring equipment. The operation required close coordination among the tunnelling, marine and freezing sectors. Following the intervention, the TBM successfully broke through the reception shaft, and the remaining project was completed. This paper describes the design, construction and operational approaches used for the freezing and serves as a basis for future projects requiring expedited ground freezing."

Based on extensive investigations on the effect of design variables on process performance, during 1982-85, Nordberg developed a 1000 hp cone crusher, with the objective of boosting crushing productivity in existing plants. The 2390 fits on the same foundation as the 7' SHD Symons cone, but is designed to give two times the capacity of the 7'. The economies of scale involved give the customer substantial cost savings. In this paper process performance of the Nordberg 2390 relative to the 7' SHD Symons cone, while crushing the same ore, will be presented. Also, implications of such a crusher scale-up to associated cost savings will be addressed.

Dealing with a trend in inverse distance estimation, IWD, is presented. A measurement is proposed to be consisted of a portion due to a mean and a portion due to a residual. The procedure consists of de-trending the measurement via a linear or nonlinear regression. Residuals are computed, and IWD parameter estimation is conducted on the residuals. Estimation at un-sampled points is then computed by estimating the mean and adding on the estimate of the IWD on the residual. A possible BOXCOX transform is also proposed.

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

INTRODUCTION The Nuclear Energy Agency plays an active role in promoting international cooperation among its member countries in the field of nuclear energy. In addition to various other functions, it plays a major role in encouraging harmonisation of government regulatory policies and practices, promoting exchange of information, and coordination of research and development in the field of radiological health and safety associated with nuclear fuel cycle activities. The work of the Agency is carried out through a number of specialised standing committees. In particular, the Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) is responsible for the Agency's activities concerned with radiological protection and related environmental problems. Its functions include review and discussion of national radiation protection policies and practices, review of developments in radiological protection, interpretation of ICRP recommendations and the study of the means of their translation into practical applications, including the establishment of radiological protection standards. Its functions also include the preparation of technical studies and reviews on specific problems requiring attention, and coordination of further research and development at the international level. Major attention is presently being given to the NEA programme of work on problems associated with radiation protection and environmental impact of nuclear fuel cycle activities, with particular attention to the front-end (uranium mining and milling) and the back-end (waste management) of the fuel cycle. In this context, the increasing attention that has been given in several countries to the problems associated with the exposure of man to radon, thoron and their daughters, and with their dosimetry and measurement, were readily appreciated by NEA, which began an active programme of work in this field in 1976. Because of the detrimental health effects,as demonstrated by epidemiological studies,caused by prolonged exposure to excessive levels of shortlived daughters of radon, particularly in poorly ventilated underground mines, the bulk of attention and needed effort has been focussed on radon and radon daughters in uranium mining. In certain countries some concern has been expressed also about the significant levels of exposure experienced by workers in non-uranium mines,and members of the public who live in particular areas or in dwellings built with particular materials which produce higher than average levels of radon and radon daughters. However, at the time of the first NEA involvement in this field it was considered that one of the most urgent problems to be solved was that of ensuring adequate personal dosimetry for uranium miners. Consequently, the NEA was urged to organise a specialist meeting on personal dosimetry and area monitoring for radon and radon daughters to provide an international forum for exchanging information and reviewing problems in this field. The meeting was held in Elliot Lake, Canada, in October 1976. A second specialist meeting, on the same subject, was held in Paris, in November 1978, to review further developments in this area. These meetings demonstrated that the overall problem associated with exposure to radon and radon daughters had many facets, each of which in recent years has been the subject of considerable attention in many countries for different reasons. It emerged from the meetings that further work was required on a variety of issues in two main areas: 1) dosimetry 2) metrology and monitoring. Conclusions and recommendations which emerged from the two NEA specialist meetings were discussed by the CRPPH. As a consequence the Committee approved, in September 1979, a detailed programme of work in the area of dosimetry and monitoring of radon, thoron and their daughters, and approved the setting up of an international Group of Experts on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring to undertake the work. The work has been divided into two phases - phase I, on dosimetric aspects, and phase II, on metrology and monitoring aspects. The terms of reference of the work are given in Appendix 1. A list of national representatives on the Group of Experts on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring is given in Appendix 2; many of these persons are participating here in the Conference. The Group of Experts met for the first time in April 1980 and met again in September 1981. The work of phase I is nearing completion and a report is expected to be submitted soon to the CRPPH for its consideration. Three technical papers providing interim information on the study appear elsewhere in the proceedings of this Conference. The papers cover the three principle areas examined in the study so far: 1) dosimetric aspects 2) review of the "working level" 3) review of objectives and requirements for measurement and monitoring of radon, thoron and daughters. The authors, their affiliations, and the titles of these papers are listed in Appendix 3. A brief overview follows giving the principal results.

Knife River Coal Mining Company's Beulah Mine is a multiple seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production at 450,000 metric ton and now produces 2.2 mm ton. As development progresses, operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost effective manner. Additional studies are on-going to determine what changes will be implemented as we encounter deep wet sands in the reserve area.

A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.

Data from many case histories reporting tunnel boring machine penetration rates in rock with unconfined compressive strengths greater than 70 MPa (10,000psi) are summarized. The case history data are useful for comparing estimated penetration rates with historic performance in similar rock types, particularly in granitic and metamorphic rocks. TBM exhibit higher penetration rates in sedimentary rocks than in granitic and metamorphic rocks. Data for the two groups of rocks are summarized separately.

Normal process development for pressure-preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests. That is followed by continuous autoclave pilot-plant testing to confirm the process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of grind size, time and temperature. And it will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several test programs have shown that the cyanide-leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot-plant autoclave. It has become apparent that laboratory investigations should extended to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. Santa Fe Pacific Gold conducted several months of metallurgical investigations for a major refractory sulfide gold deposit. The project started with batch tests to investigate and optimize the primary variables, such as grind size, retention time and temperature. These tests were conducted using a representative whole ore composite.

Introduction An earth science teacher at the junior high school level has the potential of working with 450 students per year. And these young people are at an age where they can be properly informed about the importance and necessity of a viable, domestic minerals industry. It was with this philosophy that a course was developed at Eastern Washington University for science teachers entitled, "The Minerals Industry of the Pacific Northwest." The two-week course is sponsored by the Northwest Mining Association and the Idaho Mining Association. It was first taught during the summer of 1971 and will be taught during the summer of 1986 for the sixteenth straight year. It is a two-week mini-version of the very successful six-week course taught at the Colorado School of Mines. In 1971, Russ Chadwick was President of the Northwest Mining Association. He suggested that such a course should be developed and offered at Eastern. It was determined that tuition scholarships would be necessary. This would ensure that a reasonable number of teachers would register for the course. Say a teacher has five classes a day, with 30 students in each class. Some 150 students come into contact with that teacher each term. With three terms a year, an instructor works with about 450 students per year. So, with 20 teachers in the course, it was possible that 9000 students a year could learn from our informed teachers. And now, after 15 years, more than one million students have learned about the minerals industry from teachers who have completed the course. The course is designed to take the teachers through all aspects of the minerals industry. Most of the lectures are given by the working geologists and engineers who talk about their jobs in the industry. This is extremely important for the credibility of the course. The teachers realize that the lecturing professionals really believe in what they profess. Industry fundamentals The course begins with a lecture on the need for minerals in a modern society. Most of the teachers do not realize how critical minerals are to every aspect of our daily lives. The lecture is followed by the US Bureau of Mines movie, "Minerals Challenge." The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

Airblast, the focus of the paper, is defined as blast induced atmospheric pressure waves. High overpressure levels may cause breaks of windowpanes, and plaster cracks. Additionally many mines come across psychological responses of residential areas. In this paper the monitoring of air blast is explained and evaluation procedures are defined. The allowable limits of the air blast are presented. The scaled distance approach developed for the prediction of airblast is explained. For the very rapidly growing cities, like Istanbul, the required raw materials for the construction industry are supplied from quarries in the vicinity or from inside of the city. With further growth of the population density, many quarries approach suburban areas and it will be more important to minimize the adverse effect of the blasting operations in the near future. In this paper the airblast levels that monitored in Cendere Region Quarries near Istanbul are presented. The suggestions put forward to control airblast levels.

Silica sand is one of the world's most plentiful resources and is a basic necessity in our way of life. The end uses of silica sand are an integral part of our homes, transportation, and places of work. The environmental legislation enacted in the early 1970's, coupled with the oil embargo and higher than normal inflation, have had a very real impact on the industry and its primary consumers, the foundries and glass producers. The present environmental laws directed at air and water pollution and the working environment can, in most cases, be met, but not without large capital expenditures for equipment. These expenditures must reduce the funds available for expansion and modernization of existing processes which are necessary if the costs to produce industrial sand are to remain at acceptable levels. The concern for the future is the enactment of more stringent laws, and the available technology and equipment to economically comply with them.

The paper examines the objectives, motivations and responsibilities of each party, discusses some common causes of claims in underground work, and makes some suggestions for improvements. The viewpoint and bias are those of an engineer. If a subtitle were required for the session, "Sharing the Risk" would be appropriate. Sharing the risk is an important aspect of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships because when a risk is shared, all parties have an incentive to minimize it. INTRODUCTION Decision-making in the design and construction of underground facilities must be made under conditions of varying geologic uncertainty, uncertainty which can have a major cost impact if not properly regarded. Of the two approaches for dealing with this variability, preparing for the "worst" anticipated conditions and optimizing design and construction in-situ, preparing for the "worst" conditions is the more if not solely conventionally practiced method in the United States. While the conventional approach is recognized at times to be extremely overconservative, it will remain preferred until a more adaptable method is shown to be economically superior. This paper presents research aimed at providing just such answers as to when and if an adaptable tunnel design and construction approach is more cost effective than a non-adaptable one. To fully understand the characteristics of this choice between adaptable and conventional tunneling alternatives a summary discussion of adaptable methods is presented. An acknowledgement of the importance of geologic and other factor uncertainties in making this decision leads to the adoption of decision analysis as a quantitative methodology for formalizing the problem. Exercising this methodology on three prototypical tunneling scenarios--urban deep, urban shallow, and transmountain--allows an isolation and ranking of the most crucial factors in making the basic approach decision. One scenario, a transmountain highway tunnel, is carried further through a detailed probabilistic analysis to show under what conditions of varying uncertainty adaptable approaches possess economic advantages.

Environmental protection, economic prosperity and respect of the need for social equity promotion, constitute a prerequisite for any modern industry aiming to operate in a sustainable manner. The Natural Stone industry in Europe, a sector comprising mainly of SMEs, despite the fact that consists a dynamic extraction sector, often lucks the resources to apply novel techniques and management schemes towards achieving sustainable performance. I-STONE, an EU Integrated Project funded by the 6th Framework Programme, is aiming to contribute in the improved performance of the Natural Stone industry. A primary project objective is the re-engineering of the stone production chain, in order among others to considerably in-crease its efficiency and productivity, and minimise the amount of stone wastes disposed. The present paper, resulting from the research con-ducted on environmental management within I-STONE, is focusing on the use of sustainable indicators as a tool for the assessment of the stone industry?s performance. Based on Commission Decisions and reported studies, a list of indicators was selected and used within I-STONE, including environmental and socio-economic indicators. A set of selected environmental indicators were quantified based on operational data of a number of Greek and Portuguese quarries examined as case studies. The analysis indicated that an integrated strategy, including the application of novel operation techniques and equipment, waste minimization and systematic environmental monitoring and reporting, constitute key factors for the sustainable operation of natural stone industry.

CANMET/MRL has been contributing to an industry/government program to assess the quality of air in mines, and improve the working environment for Canadian miners. The ultimate aim of this program is to recommend a sampling methodology and appropriate concentration limits for both the soot (diesel particulate matter - DPM) generated by diesel equipment, and respirable combustible dust (RCD) as measured underground. The program was conceived by the Canadian Adhoc Diesel Committee, which consists of representatives from seven major Canadian mining companies, three provincial inspectorates, one union representative, two manufacturers of diesel equipment, and CANMET, a Federal Canadian research agency. This paper describes the modification and laboratory confirmation of an existing methodology for the sampling and analysis of DPM/RCD, including: sampling problems, filter selection, filter efficiency, DPM size distribution, the approximate performance of fractionating devices, and it reports the results of current ambient measurements of exposure levels in Canadian underground mines. Because of the concern about the health impact of DPM/RCD on mine workers, North American agencies are in the process of establishing limits for these aerosols. So far, the Province of British Columbia is the only jurisdiction in North America to legislate the maximum exposure level of RCD in its underground mines, i.e. 1.5 mg/m3 interim level recommended by the Adhoc Diesel Committee. It has also recommended the use of the CANMET/ADHOC RCD sampling protocol.

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. Introduction This article discusses the unique range of properties of platinum and its applications as a high technology metal. World reserves of this strategic and precious metal are confined mostly to South Africa and, to a far lesser extent, the Soviet Union. An analysis is given of past trends in world platinum output. The timepath is computed for the world platinum output rate, covering a period of more than 350 years. This is based on the postulate that the industrial conversion of a virgin resource progresses according to a Sigmoid curve. This computation is performed by means of a nonlinear, three-stage optimization model employing a multiform Sigmoid function. Finally, the price dynamics are examined. Platinum is the most important of the group of the platinum metals to which it gives its name. Other platinum group metals are iridium, osmium, palladium, rhodium, and rhutenium. The metals occur in nature in close association and are chemically very similar to each other. Three members of the group - platinum, iridium, and osmium - are the heaviest metals known to man. Platinum's density is 11% heavier than gold and about twice the weight of the same volume of silver or lead. Properties Platinum is a typical grayish-white metal. Its special properties were known 1000 years ago to the American Indian craftsmen of what is now Ecuador and Colombia. From those distant beginnings, platinum is now firmly established as the most precious and distinctive metallic element known to mankind. It is shown in Table 1, platinum has a unique wide range of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties including high melting point, resistance to chemical attack, high catalytic activity, mechanical strength, and malleability. These properties make it indispensable for use in many industries. Application Platinum is first and foremost a high technology metal. During the last few decades, fertile scientific minds searched for and developed widespread cost-effective uses for this precious metal. Its unique properties render it irreplaceable in many key industrial processes. Important major fields of application include: • protection of man's natural environment (pollution control), • defense, • fuel production, • fertilizer manufacture, • glass and glass fiber manufacture, • pollution-free energy generation - replacement of nuclear and fuel operated power plants, • electronics, • dentistry, • medicine, and • jewelry. Besides these industrial markets, platinum is increasingly finding a place in investment portfolios around the world as investors switch from gold and silver holdings to this relatively scarce and strategic commodity. Platinum has a growing popularity among private investors. This is being accelerated by the predicted "big crash" of the US dollar and its associated weak currencies, which American financial analysts are expecting towards the end of the decade. Figure 1 shows the demand for platinum in various applications throughout the western world in 1986. The total demand amounted to 88.6 t (97.6 st) of which autocatalyst usage accounted for 32.8 t (36 st) or 37%, the biggest share. Catalytic converter technology is increasingly centered on rhodium-platinum three-way catalysts. These catalysts are able to deal with all three pollutants - carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides - in a single catalytic unit. The introduction of these three-way converters will result in a further steep rise in the platinum demand for autocatalysts.
