The Detroit Upper Rouge Tunnel CSO Control Project will capture and store up to 201 MG of combined sewer overflow from 28 outfalls in Detroit, Dearborn Heights and Redford Township during wet-weather events. The history of rock tunneling in the area is associated with high groundwater inflows, artesian pressure, and hazardous and combustible gases. This paper presents the geotechnical considerations for designing the 11.28-km (7-mile) long, 9.14 m (30-ft) finished diameter tunnel and its associated adits, chambers and shafts, including the discussions of geotechnical investigations, rock mass characterization, estimated groundwater infiltration during construction, and the selections of excavation methods and lining system based on anticipated ground behavior to be encountered.

The first part of this article is a review of industry techniques and styles during the past 50 years. It is followed by my career history during the same period. The second part covers my ideas about what works in mineral exploration. These include estimates about discovery costs, thoughts about education of explorationists, organization of exploration groups and my opinions about the relative value of exploration techniques. Evolution of exploration techniques [Table 1] shows the evolution of mineral exploration techniques and styles from 1950 to 2000. During the first half of that period, there was a progressive increase in exploration drilling. During the second half, there was a decrease in prospecting and an increase in high technology, indirect exploration and a rapid increase in discovery cost.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

A conveyor belt fire presents a serious safety hazard in an underground coal mine. A review of underground coal mine fires involving conveyor belts which occurred within the past two decades was made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Belt fires that occurred during this period of time have burned as much as 610 m of belting before the fire was extinguished. In an effort to improve safety, MSHA has undertaken a program to study the flammability of conveyor belts in large and small-scale tests. Large-scale tests were conducted on various types of mine conveyor belts using a range of airflows from 0 to 6.1 m/s. Data were obtained to evaluate the effect of airflow on flame spread and other combustion properties of the conveyor belts. The results from the large-scale tests were utilized to develop a new MSHA laboratory-scale test for evaluating the flame resistance of conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. Agreement of results based on a pass/fail criterion was obtained between the large-scale test and new laboratory-scale test. A summary of test results from the new test is shown for different conveyor belt formulations. MSHA also performed a series of fire tests with wood samples using the new laboratory-scale tunnel apparatus. These tests were conducted at airflows from 0.5 to 5.1 m/s to determine the effect on flame spread and burn damage. The data were also analyzed to determine if wood could be used as a calibration standard. The results indicate the flame spread behavior of the wood follows trends similar to results obtained with conveyor belts. The data did not show the precision needed to use wood as a calibration standard. MSHA intends through rulemaking procedures to replace the "20g" conveyor belt acceptance test with the new laboratory-scale test. MSHA also plans to implement a voluntary acceptance program. Under this program, a. conveyor belt manufacturer could obtain an MSHA acceptance for belts meeting the new test criterion. A belt accepted under the voluntary program could then be used underground. Use of conveyor belts meeting the new test would limit the propagation of fire and reduce the probability of igniting other combustibles in the belt entry.

Selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during desliming and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at very low concentrations of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration of calcium, ions to achieve the same effect. This difference may be attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to their larger size, can only adsorb to every other hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every other surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

The Aynak copper deposit, located 30 km south of Kabul in Afghanistan (Figure 1), was discovered by Soviet geologists in the 1970s. Extensive exploration undertaken in the area between 1974-80 included several hundred boreholes, seventy trenches and nine exploratory adits. This work identified a “drill-indicated resource” of 240 Mt at 2.3% Cu (ESCAP, 1995).

Pneumatic flotation is rapidly becoming accepted in the main stream of flotation techniques. Imhoflot is a pneumatic flotation process that in recent years has undergone progressive development. It combines short flotation times with excellent selectivity by employing intense pre-aeration and dispersion. K+S GmbH (K+S), Germany, has installed a complete Imhoflot flotation plant at its Sigmundshall plant. The plant treats hard salt consisting of sylvine, halite, anhydrite and kieserite. The reason for selection was that Imhoflot achieves the required grades of plus 60 weight percent K2O whilst offering lower operating costs than conventional flotation installations.

The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. Sensor derived data can add value across the mining operating chain ranging from resource definition, extraction, pre ? concentration, mineral process monitoring and assessment of product quality. Most documented studies on the use of sensors in mining focus on specific technologies for specific applications. These studies do not take into account different aims, objectives and operating conditions at different steps in the value chain. The first part of this contribution assesses key physical performance and discriminatory requirements of sensors applied in each portion of the mining value chain. The second part proposes a framework of methods for quantifying the value added by additional sensor information. Integrating the sensor based technology and the economic value quantification allows for both, designing an economically optimal sensor monitoring network along the whole mining value chain and optimizing efficiencies. Illustrative studies demonstrate the significant economic benefits, in particular in reduction of exploration expenditures, increase in extraction efficiencies, increase in ore product quality and improvement of processing efficiencies.

Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

It has' been found that lithological conditions over the Pittsburgh Coal bed cause the subsidence coefficient to vary within the area of the subsidence trough. This precludes the use of European developed predictive models, which are based upon a constant subsidence coefficient. Regression analysis of the distribution of subsidence coefficients from 11 Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, longwall panel studies on the location relative to the edge of the panel has yielded a third degree polynomial equation. This equation has been incorporated into a BASIC computer program for use on a personal computer that allows users with no previous knowledge of the theory of subsidence to predict vertical movements over typical longwall panels in the Northern Appa1achian Coal Basin.

Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. Gilsonite is a lustrous black material that can be easily crushed into a chocolate-colored powder. It is a solid but relatively soft, lightweight hydrocarbon that visually resembles the volcanic glass obsidian. It was once thought to be a type of coal, but because it is thermoplastic it melts rather than bums. Gilsonite is found in commercial quantities only in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah and western Colorado, where it forms vertical, nearly parallel veins of varying depth, width, and length. Gilsonite from different veins has different properties, most notably variations in softening point and solubility. These differences result in its use in a variety of industrial applications. Gilsonite's earliest commercial uses were in varnishes, buggy paints, and beer vat linings. Eventually it came to be used in more than 160 products ranging from inks to explosives. It is exported from the United States to most industrialized countries throughout the world. Today, due to competition from synthetics and other hydrocarbon products, its use has narrowed to several specific industries. Although sold mostly as a commodity, current research is focused on applications for gilsonite as a value added product. Historical Overview The discovery of gold in California and the dawn of the mining era in Nevada, Colorado, and Utah around 1850 brought a wave of prospectors to the western United States. One of those pioneers, Samuel H. Gilson, is generally credited with a major role in the discovery of gilsonite. The material now known as gilsonite was discovered several times from the late 1860s through the mid-1880s. It was William P. Blake who, after receiving samples of the material, wrote a paper in 1885 describing "a new variety of asphaltum from the Uinta Mountains." He termed the material uintaite. Although Sam Gilson was not the first to discover the mineral, he was an-inventor who used gilsonite in products that he patented. It was his conviction that the substance was of great value, which caused some to refer to it as gilsonite. The term Gilsonite became the registered trademark of the American Gilsonite Co., and it continues to be in use today. When the first company was formed to mine this substance in 1886 it was named the Gilsonite Manufacturing Co. This firm acquired many gilsonite mining claims and marketed a varnish made from the material. It was the unusual properties of gilsonite varnish that attracted the attention of Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Co. In 1889 Anheuser-Busch bought out Gilson's interests and formed the Gilson Asphaltum Co. Busch had been importing asphalt from Sicily for use in lining beer barrels and saw gilsonite as being more readily available and cheaper. Although gilsonite did not work well in this application, Busch did acquire a large number of mining claims in the Uinta Basin. In 1903 the parent firm of Gilson Asphaltum financed the building of an 85-km railroad from near Grand Junction, CO, to Dragon, UT, to haul gilsonite ore to market. Underground mining was initially centered near Dragon and then later at Bonanza, UT, as different veins were mined. The railway was abandoned in 1937 in favor of truck transportation. In 1938 Gilson Asphaltum changed its name to Barber Asphalt Co., the predecessor of Barber Oil Corp. In 1946 Barber Oil teamed with Standard Oil of California to form a partnership, American Gilsonite Co., which today has its operational headquarters at Bonanza, UT. Barber Oil investigated many new uses for gilsonite, including the making of petroleum derivatives such as gasoline. This work led to the construction of a 116-km pipeline to carry slurried gilsonite to a refinery in Colorado for the production of gasoline, fuel oil, and coke. Pipeline operations began in 1957 but stopped when the economics of competing with petroleum became unfavorable, and the refinery was sold in 1973. In 1981 Standard Oil (later Chevron) became the sole owner of American Gilsonite and remained so until 1991, when it sold its interest to Stratford Enterprises Co. of Tulsa, OK. The companies have since been merged and now operate under the name American Gilsonite Co. with headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT. American Gilsonite continues to be the world's largest miner and supplier of the mineral. The American Asphalt Association was formed in 1902 by former stockholders in Gilson Asphaltum. This company mined various gilsonite claims until it was dissolved in 1953 and its properties were sold to American Gilsonite and Gordon S. Ziegler and Associates. The Utah Gilsonite Co. was established in 1920 and mined several claims until 1952, when its holdings were sold to Gordon Ziegler. Several other gilsonite mining ventures have been pursued in Utah, although they were significantly smaller in scale than those described above. There are currently three companies which mine gilsonite resin in Utah. They are American Gilsonite Co., Ziegler Chemical & Mineral Corp., and Lexco.

Development of the Northeast Layback of Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit commenced in June 2000 and was successfully completed to a height of 400m (1,300 ft) in January 2003. Following a brief exploration drilling campaign at the toe of the final slope, in-pit waste rock backfilling commenced, which will ultimately buttress the final wall. Instability initially occurred in late 2000, above the 5040 Level, as the slope height approached 120m (400 ft). As mining reached the 4680 Level, significant deformation was experienced over a slope height of 230m (760 ft). Slope stability was managed and targeted reserve recovery was achieved by executing complicated modifications of the mine plan, including splitting layback development, well placed offloading cuts, step-outs and mid-slope waste rock buttresses. Decision on timing of these modifying events was often dictated by review of deformation magnitudes and rates determined from continuous slope monitoring records. Design modifications were developed through continuing interpretive refinement of structural geology controls and groundwater distribution, and through stability re-assessments. This document presents an overview of the geological setting and material and strength conditions of the northeast sector of the Betze-Post open pit, followed by development experience leading to design and development of the Northeast Layback. Rock mechanics modeling, design details and geotechnical performance monitoring are then presented. Development experience, stabilizing adjustments to the original design and safety procedures for development and exploration activities are described. The document is finalized with conclusions and acknowledgements.

Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority is currently undertaking the first Phase of Metro?s Extension to Northern Virginia. A wide range of tunnel options was considered for the Tysons Corner segment that involves about 20,000 feet of track and four stations. After consideration of many options that involved EPBM single track tunnels, NATM tunnels and large bore tunnel concepts for the entire Tysons alignment, the design now being progressed into construction involves two 520 meter (1,700 feet) long soft ground NATM tunnels with several hundred feet of cut-and-cover construction. The paper discusses the process that led to selection of the short NATM tunnels as the most feasible of the options considered for Tysons.

The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) is improving the sewer system in the Natomas area of Sacramento, CA. The Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) system is an ongoing series of tunnel pipeline projects that will provide sewer conveyance for all residents of northeast Sacramento County to the New Natomas Pumping Station, located North of downtown Sacramento, also in the city of Sacramento limits. The New Natomas Pumping Station then carries wastewater flowsto the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove via the existing Lower Northwest Interceptor. The Joint Venture of Traylor Brothers, inc. and J.F. Shea (TSJV) were awarded the UNWI 1&2 project in late September, 2007. The planned 5.8 km (3.65 mile) construction route for UNWI 1&2 begins at the New Natomas Pump Station and runs north along the East Drainage Canal to the begin-ning of UNWI 3&4 at Bridgecross Drive. UNWI 1&2 includes approximately 5.8 km (19,240 feet) of 3.65 m (144 inch) inside diameter pipe using Earth Pressure Balance Tunneling Methods. The project also includes 16.76 m (55 feet) of 3.04 m (120-inch) diameter interceptor pipeline, twenty three access manholes spaced approximately 305 m (1,000 feet) apart along the alignment, a 2.13 m (84-inch) by 3.65 m (144-inch) transition structure, a 3.65 m (144-inch) by 3.04 m (120-inch) transition structure, and the connection of three existing sanitary sewer lines to the interceptor.
