The 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project will connect the island’s two most populated cities, Taipei and Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung is the world’s third busiest port. The 23 km of alignment on Contract C230 requires the construction of 5,879 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1,285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels are mined using NATM methodology. Two of the tunnels, T01 and T08 are in the Toukoshan Formation. This paper will discuss the mining methods, ground support design, and the instrumentation installed to monitor and verify its effectiveness in the two aforementioned tunnels.

Native sulfur occurs with barite, celestite, and bioepigenetic calcite in the Culberson, Pokorny , and Leonard Minerals deposits, Delaware basin. The sulfur in these deposits, in "castile" masses, and in deposits of the Fort S tockton district have 6 34s values between +9 and -15. Native sulfur in the caves of the Guadalupe Mountains is somewhat lighter [(634s = -15 to -25)]. Barite in the Culberson, Leonard Minerals, and Comanche Creek sulfur deposits have 63% values of +35 to +73; celestite in the Culberson and Leonard Minerals occurrences have values of +38 and +36, respectively, and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.707808 and 0.708138, respectively. Barite associated with sulfide, deposits, Guadalupe Mountains, have [634s] values of +41 to +62. Barite at Seven aeart Gap, Apache Mountains, is somewhat less enriched in heavy sulfur [(634s = +14 to +37)].

The work reported herein compares the support characteristics of two different types of roof truss subjected to the same force in the horizontal tension member. The major differences between the two trusses are in the sequence of tensioning the horizontal and inclined members and in the design of the loading brackets. A photoelastic model was used to compare stresses at points along the roof of the mine opening and at the junction of the roof surface and the rib. The effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof and on tension in the horizontal member were analyzed. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the overall support characteristics of the two trusses. Conclusions are drawn relative to which type of roof truss provides the most favorable support if the horizontal members are tensioned equally.

Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

GENERAL HYDROLOGIC REGIME The total hydrologic cycle must be considered when evaluating potential ground water problems in a mining environment. Precipitation is the ul¬timate source of all surface water and essentially all ground water. Stream flow during low flow periods often orig¬inates as seeps or stream gains (base flow) where the water table intersects the land surface. A stream that is higher in elevation than the ground water system may lose flow, thereby recharging the ground water system. The magnitude of stream gain or loss is dependent upon the hydraulic conductiv¬ity and related properties of the underlying hydrostratigraphic units. Ground water moves constantly from recharge areas to discharge areas (streams and springs) usually at very slow rates. Large quantities of ground water may be in¬tercepted in many underground mining environ¬ments. Construction of an underground mine in saturated formations may encounter ground water inflows ranging from very small to very large and from continuous to intermittent depending upon the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units penetrated. SURFACE WATER VARIABLES Precipitation occurs in different forms, varying amounts, and with a wide assortment of temporal and areal distributions in the various mining dis¬tricts within the United States. Mine inflow can be affected in a matter of hours by precipitation events where there is a direct hydraulic interconnection between the mine and the surface through fractures or a mine opening. The timing, form, amount, and distribution of precipitation should be evaluated in a mine inflow study. A portion of the precipitation that falls in a topographic basin moves as sheet flow to runoff channels (Fig. 1). Some of the precipitation infil¬trates the unsaturated soil zone where it can either move laterally as interflow to the surface system to augment stream flow or move downward as re¬-charge to the ground water system. The unsatu¬rated zone (called the zone of aeration or vadose zone) can range in thickness from essentially zero to a few hundred feet. The saturated zone or ground water system occurs below the water table (zone where hydrostatic pressure is greater than atmos¬pheric pressure) where all the pores are filled with water (Freeze and Cherry, 1979, p. 44). Moisture can be lost from any of the systems (surface water system, unsaturated zone, and ground water sys¬tem) by the processes of evaporation and transpir¬ation which return moisture to the atmosphere. Stream flow consists of runoff and interflow components plus an additional base flow compo¬nent (Fig. 2). Base flow constitutes ground water discharge to a stream. Base flow plays an increas¬ingly significant role as total stream flow declines. Base flow is important because it constitutes much if not all stream flow between periods of precipi¬tation when runoff and interflow have largely dis¬sipated. INTERACTION OF SURFACE WATER AND GROUND WATER SYSTEMS Recharge from a surface water system to ground water systems can occur via unsaturated or saturated flow. The amount of recharge is depen¬dent primarily upon the vertical hydraulic conduc¬tivity of the formations underlying the stream and the availability of water. Streams that flow over low hydraulic conductivity formations lose little water even if the ground water levels are significantly lower than the stream. A ground water system may contribute flow to a surface water system but nor¬mally only by saturated flow. This contribution usually takes the form of seeps, springs, and the base flow of streams. Coal flotation applications utilizing column flotation have been shown to improve grade and recovery when compared with traditional mechanical cell flotation. Deister Flotaire Column Flotation Machines have been installed in pilot and commercial coal cleaning applications. Comparative data covering prior and current flotation is presented. In addition, special characteristics covering the Deister air generation system are presented.

Blasting is commonly viewed separately from mechanical handling and crushing. This view is misleading because the degree of fragmentation achieved by blasting can have a significant effect on the efficiency of these processes and, hence, on the overall cost of the mining operation. In this paper, aspects of blasting and crushing and their interaction are examined. A case study is also presented that dramatically illustrates the influence of blast fragmentation on subsequent processing and on the financial implications involved.

The results of an experimental research program to measure the non- Darcy flow coefficient as a function of temperature and overburden pressure are presented. The experimental values of the non-Darcy flow coefficient were measured over a temperature range of 70-200°F (21°-93"C)and overburden pressures of 1000-4000 psia (68-272 atm). The data obtained confirm that the non-Darcy flow coefficient is a function of rock and fluid properties and is not solely dependent upon the former has been routinely assumed in the literature.

The industrial types, sources, and quantities of US tin residues are identified and the methods of treatment reviewed. The effect of a lower tin price, due to a current major world surplus of tin metal, is mentioned and covered in some detail. The names and locations of over 100 US firms recovering tin residues are listed. Current smelting and refining charges are included to convert the residues into tin metal and alloy. The impact of the complete with-drawal of the LME daily tin price since Oct. 24, 1985, and the collapse of the International Tin Council, which at one time supported the Buffer Stock Manager, are reported with comments.

December 1988, Phelps Dodge Corp. brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati schist belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to the surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling, and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with cip elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

During the first fifteen years of operation at the Syncrude facility in northern Alberta, numerous improvements have been made in the field of ore conveying. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about with the use of detailed field evaluation. This paper outlines some of the programs which have been run to optimise belt and system construction, and conveyor performance and utilization.

A method of raising by use of a cage has been used with considerable success at the Cary Mine, Hurley, Wisconsin, on the Gogebic Range. The Cary Mine is owned by the Odanah Iron Company, Pickands, Mather and Company, Managers. This method is known to have been used previously at Tennessee Copper and probably in other districts. The Cary Mine was engaged in deepening the main shaft from the 34th to the 37th level. To accomplish this, and to facilitate development, a ventilation shaft 930 feet north of the main shaft was sunk from the 34th to the 37th level and crosscuts were driven on the 35th, 36th and 37th levels to the main shaft location, These levels are at 200 foot verticalintervals. All of this work was done in granite and the majority of the workings were not timbered. The next step was to get a raise through from the 37th to the 36th level, and from the 36th to the 35th level, which would later be stripped to full shaft size. Several methods of raising were considered including double-compartment cribbed and two single raises interconnected at regular intervals, but the cage method was chosen as it appeared to be a safe and efficient operation. The method in general consists in the use of a drill hole between levels through which to pass a hoisting rope to raise and lower a light cage.

The interphase modification activity of 1,3-phenylene dimaleimide (also known as m-phenylene bismaleimide (BMI)) has been studied in composites based on magnesium hydroxide (60% w/w) and a polypropylene block copolymer (PPBC) that featured an ethylene-rich elastomeric impact modifier phase. BMI was found to be a unique product that led to significant simultaneous improvements in composite strength and toughness, even at the high filler levels. BMI modification was found to promote encapsulation of filler particles with the elastomeric phase of the PPBC together with formation of a PP boundary layer of increased crystalline content.

This paper emphasizes the chemical principles and the influence of various chemical structures behind slurry rheology control chemicals. Particular examples are shown which correlate chemical structure modifications to environmental factors involved in grinding such as pH, shear, ore type, water chemistry, and particle size.

Use has been made of several theoretical models to predict radiation levels in underground uranium mines. The models used are the Evans model, the Thomas-Epps mine model, the isolated mine model, the mine tunnel with no air flow and the mine tunnel with air flow (Beckman and Holub). Calculations based on the above models have been extended to include thoron gas and its progeny, a common occurrence in some Canadian uranium mines. Theoretical predictions include radon and thoron progenies WLs and concentrations, and some ratios of great practical interest. The main differences between the models are pointed out and comparison is made with experimental data gathered during the last three years in several Canadian underground uranium mines.

Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air). As a consequence of the weathering of As-rich mineral phases, high arsenic contents are commonly detected in effluents from mine voids and spoil heap leachates.

The recovery of apatite from the phoscorite ores occurring in the Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, involves a flotation process that is particularly difficult to characterize from a fundamental point of view. However, the reagents used, (tall oil fatty acid, nonylphenyltetraglycol ether, sodium silicate, and sodium hydroxide) can successfully bring about a separation of apatite from dolomitic calcite, which is the most troublesome gangue component. Recently, it has been demonstrated with some flotation feeds that the addition of certain polysaccharides can improve the flotation significantly. It has been shown that the metallurgy obtained is closely linked to the nature of the froth, and this, in turn, is influenced, often dramatically, by the presence or absence of certain of the reagents. The character of the froth depends less on the inherent frothing ability of these reagents than on the presence or absence of fine mineral particles in the froth, and on their surface characteristics and state of aggregation. The polyglycol ether and the polysacchar- ides have been shown to affect these properties, and it is suggested that a major function of these reagents is to modulate the properties of the fine particles in the pulp, thereby changing the character of the froth and giving rise to improved results.
