INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.

Bacterial degasification of methane and conventional methane drainage for generation of power have become accepted practice. Comparative economies of both the techniques have been described. Authors have discussed an alternative technique, involving complete methane biocycle. The first stage of the entire process involves gasification of coal using a consortia of bacteria to generate methane. The generated methane has been proposed to be pumped,as in conventional methane drainage. Technique described is basically similar to underground coal gasification, with the difference that in place of coal combustion, degradation of coal to lower molecular weight compounds by one set of bacteria and then methanogenesis by methanogens, producing methane have been described. Brief account of communities of bacteria that may be employed have been dealt with. Three arguments in favour of proposed technology as an alternative to conventional coal mining are: 1.Total elimination of hazardous operation. 2.Availability of power plants based on methane drainage, assuring comparative economies. 3.Possibility of utilisation of fuel cell technology for power generation giving higher efficiency. All the three phases of complete blocycle viz (1) methane generation from coal (ii) conversion of methane to hydrogen and oxygen (iii) conversion of products so obtained to methane, thereby completing the cycle have been discussed. INTRODUCTION Drainage of methane by conventional pumping process (Boxho,et.al.,1980) not only is helpful in maintaining safe extraction of coal, but with utilisation of extracted gas for power generation, also helps in over all economy of coal mining. This is gradually becoming standard practice for mining of coal in highly gassy mines. An alternative technique (Thakur et. al., 1991) of bacterial degasification of coal seams is also gradually gaining ground. The bye products of this process that is carbondioxide and water, do not contribute towards economy of coal extraction process. However the technique has its own advantage particularly in goaf area for avoiding fire hazard and drainage of methane from coal seams prior to initiation of mining operation. Either of these techniques could be applied in specific situations with success.

Veins containing silver and gold values, with some associated values in copper, lead, and zinc, were discovered in 1890 by Will Kirwin in what was later designated the Kirwin mining district situated on the North Fork of the Wood River, about 56 km (35 miles) west of Meeteetse. (See Fig. I.) After considerable prospecting activity, including the driving of several short adits on veins, most of theclaims in the district were consolidated into two ownerships. One was held by the Galena Ridge Mining Co. which was organized on Nov. 18, 1902. The other was held by the Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. which was organized on Mar. 23, 1903. During the period from 1903 to 1907 inclusive, the two companies continued exploration on veins in their respective areas. The major exploration-development activity for the Galena Ridge Mining Co. was the driving of the Galena Ridge crosscut adit for 709 m (2327 ft), to cut veins at depth which had been explored by short adits high on Galena Ridge. Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. concentrated their work on the Bryan and Pickwick veins. Neither of the companies found ore that was rich enough to sustain profitable operations in that remote locality. Most of the major exploration and development activities were stopped in late 1907. A major snowslide in February 1907 killed three people and destroyed several buildings and may have contributed to discouragement in the area. From 1908 to the early 1920s, only minor exploration work was done. Galena Ridge Mining Co. was dissolved Aug. 5, 1922, and Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. was dissolved on Mar. 23, 1923.

Extensive gravel deposits exist within a six-county area in the mountains surrounding the Salt Lake Valley, and in the mountain ranges to the west. The six-county area includes Davis, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah, and Wasatch Counties. The majority of these are beach deposits from prehistoric Lake Bonneville. However, real estate development associated with a projected population increase of 54 percent over the next 20 years is expected to remove most gravel deposits in Salt Lake County from consideration for mining, forcing gravel operations to relocate from eastern Salt Lake Valley to the Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains farther west. The gravels in these ranges are of lower quality and require additional processing to manufacture asphalt and concrete. Replacing gravel resources along the Wasatch Front with resources in the Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains over the next 20 years has the potential to increase construction costs by nearly $1 billion. The majority of this cost (82 percent) is the result of increased transportation costs due to longer distances to market. The remainder of the cost is attributable to lower quality gravels that will require additional processing in the manufacture of asphalt and concrete. The following analysis and discussion does not take into consideration the amount of crushed stone that is currently being used in the construction industry in northern Utah, its use as a substitute for lower quality gravels, or as a factor in the base case projection.

Discussion by R.W. Hutchinson Minter's excellent recent paper (1990) on the great paleoplacer gold deposits of the Witwatersrand and its subsequent discussion (Cheney, 1991) and reply (Minter, 1991) provide an informative, interesting and up-to-date review of the geology of these unique ores and some long enigmatic questions regarding their origin. Clearly summarized by Minter (1990) are the compelling sedimentologic and stratigraphic relationships indicating that the Central Rand Group conglomerates are ancient placers and documenting the fluvio-deltaic conditions of their transport and deposition. As Minter (1991) indicates, Cheney's discussion broadens Minter's 1990 coverage of the subject by considering higher and lower stratigraphic units and by adding detailed comments concerning recently published information about metamorphic and age relationships. Cheney's discussion and Minter's reply also readdress the old controversy of epigenetic hydrothermal vs. syndepositional placer origin for these deposits. This controversy has been resurrected by: • recent recognition of hydrothermally-altered granites (HAGS) in the older Archean basement rocks that lie unconformably beneath the Dominion Group rocks north and west of the Witwatersrand depository; • recognition of greenschist metamorphic assemblages in the Witwatersrand strata; and • the presence of interpreted epigenetic mineral assemblages and textures in some of the deposits. These relationships are briefly discussed by Cheney who suggests they may result from later, superimposed metamorphism and deformation and do not prove that the gold was introduced by epigenetic/metamorphogenic processes. In his paper, Minter (1990) cited the 1986 abstract of a subsequently published paper by Hutchinson and Viljoen (1988) who also considered many of these aspects and attempted to integrate them all in abroad genetic hypothesis. In addition, they emphasized the additional important problem of determining the source for the Witwatersrand gold. Although this issue was partially addressed by Reimer (1984), Mossman and Dyer (1985) and Reimer and Mossman (1990), the question has been generally under emphasized in earlier work and was, therefore, not stressed by Minter and Cheney. Reimer (1985) also emphasized the importance of weathering of the basin's Archean hinterland and its affects on Witwatersrand sedimentation. Since the epigenetic hydrothermal hypothesis was essentially discarded in favor of placerist origin, the gold source for these great deposits has generally been attributed to the weathering of lodes in greenstones or granites of the uplifted, older Archean hinterland to the north and west. However, Hutchinson & Viljoen (1988) present evidence that this explanation is inadequate, as well as data in support of an alternative explanation. They suggest that the gold and accompanying abundant, clearly detrital and auriferous pyrite in the conglomerate reefs were derived by erosional degradation of auriferous-pyritic exhalite previously deposited, by shallow marine discharge of hydrothermal fluids, along the fault-bound northwestern margins of the Witwatersrand depository. The auriferous-pyritic exhalites were generated by fluid-rock reactions in the subsurface, particularly in the highly-altered lavas of the Dominion Group but also in adjacent basement granitic rocks. The process envisaged is comparable to that observed in sea floor hydrothermal systems today, although, in this case, it occurred at the margin of a rapidly subsiding, shallow marine or continental basin. Important evidence for this explanation is the anomalous gold content of the ferruginous, shaley strata occurring throughout the Witwatersrand Supergroup and including the distinctive contorted bed that is an iron formation. These layers have been interpreted (Hutchinson and Viljoen, 1988 and 1990) to represent the more distal, finer-grained, mixed chemical/clastic sedimentary strata. Thus, they are the basinal equivalents of the proximal, auriferous-pyritic exhalites that were deposited along the basin's margin and subsequently reworked by sedimentary processes. This gold source explanation resolves many of the enigmatic questions regarding Witwatersrand geology and the reawakened controversy between proponents of hydrothermal and placerist genetic hypotheses. The theory invokes a hydrothermal origin for the gold in the basin-margin pyritic exhalites, thus explaining the visible hydrothermal characteristics (Figs. 1 and 2). It also provides compelling evidence for placer origin by encompassing all of the fluvio-deltaic processes of clastic sedimentary transport and deposition that are clearly summarized by Minter. These characteristics result from the degradational reworking of the pyritic exhalites along the depository's margins. Fluvial reworking, transport and deltaic redeposition of this detritus, along with additional detritus carried into the depository from the hinterland, then formed the conglomerate reefs. Other enigmatic aspects of Witwatersrand geology include: • the rarity of magnetite and ilmenite (the two most common heavy minerals in placer deposits) and the contrary abundance of leucoxene in the conglomerate reefs; • the presence of differing varieties of pyrite (authigenic, allogenic, compact and porous) all of which are auriferous; and • the presence of well-rounded pebbles, even cobbles, of pyrite that, in view of the brittleness of the mineral, could not have been transported great distances from a hinterland.

The mechanisms of chalcopyrite oxidation in alkaline solutions have been studied using cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance spectroscopy techniques. Analysis of the impedance spectra using equivalent circuit models has made it possible to suggest layerwise growth of surface films. From the value of equivalent circuit parameters, properties of the surface layers are inferred. These properties change substantially with the change in oxygen and/or collector concentration in solution and give rise to changes In contact angle and flotation response. In agreement with prior investigations, the present study shows that flotation recoveries alone cannot be used to determine the effect of collector on flotation of chalcopyrite. The rate of flotation is a more sensitive parameter to determine the role of collector on floatability of chalcopyrite.

Clay minerals can be a source of problems in heap leaching operations. The ore for many heap leach operations is commonly acid-sulfate alteration zone rocks which may be found in hot springs deposits as well as the supergene zone of other near- surface gold deposits. Clays can be important constituents of these ores. Swelling clays, such as smectite, can come loose from the agglomerated ore, migrate within the heap, concentrate in pore spaces and often plug up flow channels in the heap Cement is often added to the ore as a binder during the agglomeration process. Lime is added for pH control. Their presence, combined with the sodium cyanide commonly used to leach, can raise the pH of the leach solution to 10 or even 12. This very alkaline solution can cause dissolution of some mineral Some clays, such as kaolinite, are not very stable in high pH solutions. They can be dissolved and reprecipitated as other clay species if sufficient silica and the appropriate cations are available in solution. Silica gels and amorphous materials can also be created from the dissolved kaolinite and other minerals and act as retardants to the flow of leach solutions in the heap. Therefore, before a heap leach operation is built, the operator should evaluate the clays in the ore and test the agglomeration procedure. It is important to know not only the mineralogy and the chemistry of the leach environment but how the minerals and solutions interact and what the products of this interaction are. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that expanding smectite- bearing clays can be generated within the heap. How and why this happens will be explained.

Shotcrete is used both in mining and tunnelling for supporting rock. Both dry and wet processes are used for shotcreting, and each produces good quality concrete. Thick shotcrete layers function as a concrete arch supporting loose rock. Thin layers prevent relative movements between the blocks of rock due to the fine concrete in the cracks and joints. No progressive fallouts occur since key blocks are kept in place. Rockbolts are often used together with shotcrete in order to create an arch around the tunnel making the rock to support itself. Shotcrete is sprayed either manually or by means of mechanized equipment. The aim is to spray required the layer thickness in one pass and with a minimum amount of rebound. Sprayed layers should also be as even as possible. The tip of the nozzle should be moved in circular movements. The shotcrete should be sprayed at a right angle to the rock surface; the optimum distance from the nozzle to the application surface must be found by experiment. In a mine shotcreting forms a materials handling system which includes batching, transporting and the actual shotcreting. The equipment used vary depending on the spraying method, mining conditions and the location of the mine. Shotcreting is performed with a purpose-designed unit in most cases where operation is mechanized. The shotcreting unit consists of a spraying machine with a hose and a nozzle, an additive system, a manipulator and a mobile carrier with all the necessary controls and accessories. The key element of the unit is the shotcreting manipulator which holds and guides the nozzle as required. The manipulators currently in use are hydraulically operated, and their remote controlled booms are also often called robots. These manipulators have enabled users to increase their output capacities, to remove the operator away from unsafe areas and from the influence of dust and rebound. Furthermore, they improve the shotcrete quality and reduce shotcreting costs.

INTRODUCTION The quantity of seepage that will be released from a tailings impoundment depends not only on the characteristics of the seepage control system, but also on the properties of the foundation soil or rock beneath the impoundment and the nature of the groundwater in the area. The interaction between various elements of the seepage control system and the influence the various characteristics of the site and impoundment have on seepage are the subject of this paper. The results of analyses are presented herein to indicate the nature and magnitude of the effect that the various factors will have on seep¬age losses. Analyses were conducted for a uranium mill tailings impoundment located in an area characteristic of many found in the western United States or Canada. A typical seepage control system consists of placement of either a clay or synthetic liner beneath the impoundment. In some cases an underdrain system may be placed on top of the liner to collect drainage from the tailings. The parameters that were varied in the analyses included those pertaining to the liner, underdrains and foundation strata. In general, it is shown that the seepage losses will vary in a complex manner depending on the interaction of the elements of the site and the seepage control system. As may be expected, the liner and underdrain systems have the most pronounced effect on controlling seepage. This paper deals with the quantity of seepage released from an impoundment However, the impact that seepage losses from an impoundment will have on the surrounding environment will depend on the rate at which contaminants will enter the groundwater and the nature of the groundwater flow itself. Consequently, when considering these results with regard to environmental impact they must be interpreted along with considerations of geochemical factors. MECHANICS OF SEEPAGE The mechanics of seepage and methods of analysis that were used will be discussed briefly herein. For a more detailed discussion the reader is referred elsewhere (McWhorter and Nelson, 1978, 1979, 1980). A general column through the impoundment was considered to be as shown in Fig. 1.

Transformation of the measured borehole deformations induced by stress relief relies on the traditional assumption that the rock is continuous and homogeneous. Systematic and quantitative tests were carried out to check the performance of devices commonly used for measuring borehole deformations within different types of discontinuous rock conditions. Test results provide a reliable basis for considering the influence of discontinuities on in situ stress measurement and for choosing the best measuring device for a given rock type and condition.

In meeting this need, this paper introduces the concept of a process software model, or more specifically an object-oriented software model, and presents a detailed methodology for its development involving software model specification and development. These software models provide a formal basis for the subsequent design and construction of software objects corresponding to the real world process objects.

In the present study, the possibilities of use of natural zeolitic tuffs from the Skaloma area, Rhodope prefecture, Greece, for the removal of Pb and Zn ions from aqueous solutions has been studied. The equilibrium data were examined for different grain sizes, pH?s and initial concentrations. An apparent kinetic study was also carried out for different time intervals at constant temperature and pulp density. For the chemical equilibrium study the Freundlich isotherm was used. The experimental results verified the favored behavior of zeolite on lead ions and the quick kinetic of the process whilst the efficiency of the ion exchange on zinc is rather limited. The grain size of the material did not greatly affect the performance of the process. The removal of metal ions worked better at lower pH. The Freundlich isotherms are in good agreement with the experimental data.

INTRODUCTION It is a generally recognized obligation of owners and operators of underground mines in the United States to protect the health of miners against the potential carcinogenic effect of airborne alphaemitting radionuclides, in particular the shortlived radioactive daughter-products of 222Rn. In meeting this obligation, a number of strategies are available, and it is largely up to the operator to decide what combination of methods he will use. Because the officially accepted theory of the mechanism by which radon and its short-lived progeny cause cancer of the respiratory system, the objective in controlling this health hazard is to limit as far as possible the inhalation of the three daughter products, 218Po, 214Pb, and 214Bi. (214Po, the fourth nuclide in the chain, is so short-lived that its alpha-decay occurs almost instantaneously after the beta-decay of its parent, 214Bi.) The reasoning in this theory leads to the conclusion that the alphadecay of radon itself causes essentially negligible physiological damage, and that the amount of daughter product activity attributable to decay of radon within the respiratory system is also very small. As every ventilation engineer in this business knows, however, focusing remedial actions exclusively on the daughter products themselves is choosing the hard way, and will probably never lead to effective control of this health hazard in underground mining activities. The reason for this troublesome fact can be seen in Figure 1. Let us say that we have air containing 222Rn and its short-lived daughters in near-equilibrium, a not-uncommon condition in the air of a poorly ventilated underground mine, and that we wish to purify it by removing only the toxic daughter products. If we have been very thorough in our purification efforts, we might expect to achieve a 99% reduction of the Working Level (WL) measurement. Figure 2 allows us to examine closely the early regrowth of WL's in this freshly cleaned air. Within the first five minutes, for instance, the WL's are back to 10% of their full equilibrium value, and ten minutes later the level has more than doubled and is on its way to an almost complete defeat of the clean-up effort by the end of the next hour. It is quite clear from this simple illustration that no matter how effective an air-cleaning system may be if it is directed only at the selective removal of the toxic trio, 218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi, its beneficial effect will be quite temporary. A truly effective attack on the problem must always include methods aimed at the control of the unruly parent, radon. Then, even if its progeny have an inalienable "right to life", their brief lives will not be spent in the miners' lungs. No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

This paper focuses on the noise exposure levels of miners employed on longwall production faces. Along with the increased production from longwall units has come the potential for greater noise exposures. Typical noise levels are given for the various noise sources that are present on modern longwall faces. Exposure times have typically increased since the introduction of longwall technology in this country. Representative exposure times and patterns are analyzed. Possible solutions are presented for generalized cases. Engineering controls developed by the Bureau of Mines are explained and their potential effectiveness is calculated for the cases presented. The role of hearing protectors in an overall hearing conservation program is also investigated. Recent research performed by the Bureau suggests that the actual performance level of muff -type protectors may be less than the manufacturers ratings under certain circumstances. The use of muff- type protectors is discussed and analyzed with respect to their use on longwall operations.

Scale-up and simulation of flotation columns requires construction of mathematical models which employ, as a minimum, rate constants for quantifying particle recovery in the collection zone as well as split factors for quantifying froth zone performance. To date, measurement of these rate parameters has proven to be difficult, due to the interdependent nature of the collection and froth zones. This paper describes a technique for making these measurements. The method requires recovery data from two modes of operation: countercurrent and cocurrent. In cocurrent flow slurry is fed at the bottom of the column and tailings are withdrawn a short distance below the froth interface. Countercurrent mode is conventional operation. The critical difference is that particles which are dropped out of the froth in cocurrent mode are immediately lost to tailings, while in countercurrent mode the particles are subjected to recollection. Fitting of the measured recoveries to the equations that describe flotation in the two modes yields rate constant or recovery values for both the collection and the froth zones.

The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

Theoretical research, laboratory tests and practical experience confirm the possibility to stabilise the excavated tunnel front by suitably composed slurries even in coarse ground with extremely high permeability. The fluid assures dependable repartition of the pressure, low torque of the cutting wheel and small perturbances of the original ground structure. Very easy access to the front, for tool repair or removal of obstacles, are other features of the WF-Hydroshield concept. For soft ground, the Hydrojet (excavation by immersed slurry jets) permits still further improvements. Field experiences in very mixed face conditions are related. Measured soil subsidences in homogeneous, loose sands above Hydroshield-driven tunnels are compared to calculated values. Dependable shield tail seals, which are a necessary condition for work without compressed air in the tunnel, and an original repair kit are presented. The aim to liberate shield driving from hazards of narrowly defined soil conditions and to broaden the range of applications led to a series of bentonite shield machines, derivated from the initial slurry type, such as Dense Mud Shield, Earth Pressure Balance Shield or shields with hard rock cutterheads. The ability of microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and various aquatic flora to sorb metals from dilute aqueous solutions is well documented. Although microorganisms have significant potential in decontaminating waste waters, techniques and equipment suitable for bioassisted decontamination are limited. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the use of microorganisms immobilized in porous polysulfone beads for extracting toxic and heavy metals from dilute waste streams. The minus 8- plus 12-mesh beads were fabricated from high-density poly- sulfone dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF). Dried, thermally killed yeast, algae, duckweed, xanthan gum, and alginates were blended into the polysulfone-DMF, and spherical beads were formed by injecting the mixture into water. Microscopic analysis revealed microorganisms immobilized within the bead pores. The beads had excellent handling characteristics and were tested in stirred reactors, fixed bed columns, and fluidized bed columns for their ability to remove metal contaminants from several waste waters. The effluents resulting from these waste waters met or exceeded the National Drinking Water Standards for cadmium, copper, manganese, and zinc. Other heavy metal contaminants readily sorbed by the beads included arsenic and mercury. Elution of metal values from the beads was accomplished using dilute nitric acid or sodium carbonate.

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation.
