The transition from centrally planned to market economy affects methods of economic analysis. The models which were used in the past are riot valid presently, however they we're the seed which initialized the development of methods and applications. There is more than twenty years of experience in modeling of coal mining development. The first attempts were devoted to select the moment of mine construction commencement in order to meet planned output. In Poland significant development of such models began in 1986. Within the Central Research and Development Program there has been a continuous development of models. These models from econometric to optimization ones, were a certain sequence which, in accordance with changing economy system, led to the last version of the model. It is the most suitable one for contemporary problems of coal mining in present Polish circumstances.

The importance of a power economy that is efficient both in technological and economic terms has been clearly recognized in recent years. In 1977 the German Federal Government therefore introduced its Energy Research and Energy Technologies Program 1977-1980, which consolidates the government activities in the field of nuclear and non-nuclear energy research. The priority objectives of this program can be summarized as follows: safeguarding the medium- to long-term energy supply in the Federal Republic of Germany at reasonable overall macroeconomic cost, taking into account the requirements of environmental protection and the safety of the population. In the field of coal mining technologies, about 200 research projects are currently under way. A total of DM 1.7 billion is earmarked for research to be conducted in this area between 1977 and 1980.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. Incidents associated with secondary dust ignitions in the mining of massive sulphide ore deposits are of major concern in Canadian underground metal mines. During stope or development blasting, a highly concentrated cloud of sulfide dust is created and may be ignited, resulting a secondary explosion which releases a considerable volume of sulphur dioxide and possibly other sulphur gases. The consequent pressure, heat and toxic gases can result in loss of life, significant damage to equipment and loss of production. These losses are expensive and should be prevented. Explosions of this type have occurred at the H-W mine of Westmin Resources mainly in the development headings and cut and fill stapes. This paper presents the results of a study conducted at the H-W mine to compare dust sampling methods for explosivity tests. The associated benefits and pitfalls of each sampling technique are examined. The investigative work conducted to develop and test preventive and control methods against sulphide dust ignitions is also discussed. The techniques which will minimize the risk of sulphide dust ignition in metalliferous mines are outlined. A review of current preventive and control measures practised at the H-W mine is also presented.

Real options (RO) valuation is an alternative net present value (NPV) framework that is able to incorporate both management flexibility and dynamic project risks. In this paper, management is considering the development of a satellite low-grade zone while operations in a developed high-grade zone continue. If the low-grade zone is developed prior to high-grade zone exhaustion, mine capacity must be expanded before additional production from the low-grade zone can be processed. This expansion can be avoided only if low-grade zone development is delayed until the high-grade zone is exhausted. The RO model presented here allows the development and capacity expansion decisions to be reconsidered on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably.

"1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

This paper describes a wind tunnel modelling study on airflow and pollutant concentration in a large open pit mine located in southern China. A 1:1000 scale model of the surface mine was fabricated and placed in a wind tunnel. Airflow velocity in the test section of the wind tunnel can be continuously adjusted from 0.3 m/s to 6.0 m/s. In this study, both the present pit condition and the projected final pit condition were modelled. Airflow direction and velocity profiles were obtained. The impact of wind direction and velocity on airflow was also studied. The pollutant concentration distribution in the open pit was simulated using smoke, and a distribution profile was obtained. Respirable dust concentrations at the mine site were measured, then its concentrations at the projected final pit condition were estimated using the obtained pollutant concentration distribution profile. Under normal meteorological conditions, it is expected that the respirable dust concentration for the final pit should not exceed the government standard. Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water-bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited number of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quantify the magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted such a study at a mine site in Greene County, PA. A total of eight water wells were drilled, and hydrologic parameters, such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield, were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water-level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

Complex sulphide ores usually require very fine grinding of the whole ore stream to achieve adequate liberation. Recent improvements to DSM screens have made this device appear competitive with cyclones in circuits treating these ores. A DSM screen and cyclones were tested in pilot-scale grinding of a copper, lead, zinc ore and the resultant data were used to establish a multi-component simulation model. The model was used to assess the influences of mill environment, circuit flows and pulp densities, final product properties (size, relative size and SG of the values, and liberation characteristics) and a second grinding circuit on capacity and product size distributions, and hence define conditions for which one device is better than the other.

The present work emphasizes the selection in the separation of the apatite/calcite by the direct anionic flotation versus the double flotation, with a reverse second stage of the Jacupiranga phosphate ore. The double flotation would allow the obtaining of two concentrated solutions: one of them mainly constituted by a calcium carbonate material (CaCO3) and the other one, phosphatic (apatite). The calcium carbonate concentrated solution is used for the production of cement. The presence of phosphatic material in the calcium solution is not desirable, phosphor being a harmful element to cement. On the other hand, smaller quantities of calcite in the phosphate concentrate would represent a substantial economy in the processes of production of phosphated fertilizers. These processes make use of sulfuric acid to the solubilization of the apatite and the presence of calcium material consumes acid. Also that, when carbonates are solubilized, unwanted products are formed resulting in losses in the process and diminishing the quality of the fertilizer produced. These characteristics are discussed in the paper and are compared to another Brazilian phosphate ore, the reverse route of which can be considered more adequate. The results are discussed according to recent discoveries, and special emphasis is given to the use of corn starch and its crucial role in promoting the selection in the direct flotation process.

After a short review of the basic concepts underlying the application of selective flotation and electrostatic separation to the beneficiation of phosphate ores, the paper deals with the results obtained with these two technologies for a number of run-of-mine ores of different origin and distinct mineropetrographic features. Problems are discussed in the light of the minero-petrographic characteristics of the ores.

This investigation is an exploratory study to evaluate a large number of potential pyrite depressants for use during coal flotation. Subsequently, the more promising reagents can be evaluated in detail. Several reagent categories (such as alkalis, lime, oxidizing agents, reducing agents, specific inorganic ions and dispersants) that were found to be effective pyrite depressants are discussed here. Other pyrite depressants will be discussed in Parts II and III.

The potential of controlling heavy metal ions in effluents from discontinued mining operations and waste rock piles has been investigated. A fresh water green alga, Cyanidium caldarium, was found to have the potential to remove Cut' from solutions while exhibiting high tolerance to acid conditions which are commonly encountered in copper-nickel mine drainage. The process has the potential for application as a low maintenance metal decontamination system. The growth requirements and copper removal characteristics of this microorganism are described.

This paper describes an experiment conducted to investigate the law of airflow on a mechanized longwall coal face. Background to the Square Law relating frictional pressure drop and airflow is presented and deviations from this Law are discussed. The procedures used to investigate the Law of Airflow for the longwall are described and the results are presented. The results verify the Square Law relationship for airflow along a mechanized longwall face.

In this work, a sample (of about 100kg) of an ore considered as smectitic, not yet industrialized, from Lages-SC-Brazil, was tested for evaluation of its industrial applications. First, we characterize them by XRD, DTA, FRX, and CEC analysis. After this, the smectitic clay was changed to sodium form by treatment with sodium carbonate. Then, the homoionic sodium clay was tested for iron ore pelletizing agent, as binder of foundry sands, and drilling mud with good results.

The goal of this project is to develop, demonstrate, and document the beneficial use applications of a ponded F-fly ash as a road subbase material for the 2.1-mile Meredosia Industry Access Truck Route in Meredosia, Illinois. Approximately 60,000 to 70,000 cubic yards of ponded fly ash are proposed for use on this project without negative environmental impacts to surface water or groundwater. The County Highway Truck Route will consist of a 24-foot wide road built on a 0 to 7-foot thick compacted F-fly ash subbase. Laboratory testing indicates this fly ash will serve adequately as a road subbase, conforming to IDOT standard specifications. The economic considerations of using the Meredosia F-fly ash will also be developed so that a detailed cost-benefit analysis can be prepared for this project and for future projects. This project represents a two-year cooperative development and demonstration effort among the Office of Coal Development and Marketing (OCDM) of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (IDCCA), Southern Illinois University (SIU), Morgan County Highway Department (MCHD), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), AmerenCIPS, and the Morgan County Regional Planning Commission. It is anticipated that monitoring activities will continue for a period of three (3) years after the completion of this project. The MCHD and IDOT will oversee all construction activities and long-term performance evaluation studies. Successful demonstration of large-volume beneficial use applications of F-fly ash at this site will significantly reduce management costs for power plants burning Illinois Coal. Furthermore, it will encourage similar utilization strategies at other sites in the State of Illinois.

The El Soldado copper mineralization occurs as relatively high-grade irregular ore bodies with assay contacts and with frequent inclusions of barren rock. The sampling methods must be timely for production grade control purposes, as well as accurate and inexpensive. Sampling techniques evolved from sampling dump cars at the haulage level to sampling Scooptrams at the loading pockets. These methods were abandoned in favor of sampling production blastholes. Several sampling alternatives are discussed. These involve the selection of optimum volumes and sampling frequencies while taking into consideration geological parameters and statistical analyses of sampling data.

The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes suggest that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, un¬certainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.
