Grinding mills in which the comminution takes place between rollers and the surface of a disc, table or ring are generally known as roller type mills. The Loesche Mill, also known as the Disc Roll Mill, is a special type of roller mill in which the grinding surfaces consist of two rollers assembled over a horizontal disc or table which rotates at a relatively low speed. This design is particularly applicable to industry's present day demand for large capacity grinding mills.

Longwall mining offers low cost potential for coal with high capital investment. As opposed to two shifts-per-day operation in most long- walls, Saarberg Mines in Germany increase utilization of capital by operating their longwalls around the clock. Differentiation between capital and operating costs, corrective maintenance versus preventive maintenance, improved roof conditions, and economical life of equipment was investigated. A surprisingly high degree of improvement was attained. Capital costs at Saarberg longwall coal mines have been reduced through a step-by-step research and trial program. This reduction was particularly influenced by the high performance pilot longwalls at the Ensdorf mine. The following presentation shows data and figures of those longwalls. End results were 40% reduction in capital costs, which could contribute favorably to investment decisions in the coal industry in a supply side economics environment.

Investigations of fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer are described. The results indicate essentially "normal" breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (greater than about 20 µm) but show clear evidence for re-agglomeration in the fine size range (less than about 10 µm). A simplified population balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage has been formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions are assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behavior. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e. by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons of model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate re-breakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

High anionic functionality acrylamide co-polymers and poly(sodium acrylate) are used as red mud flocculants in bauxite processing operations. These synthetic polymers are effectively displacing starch as the dominant polymer in red mud settling. The performance of these polymers is primarily dependent on the bauxite mineralogy, the alkalinity of the red mud slurry, and the anionic functionality and molecular size (viscosity) of the polymer. In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of the synthetic watersoluble polymers will be reviewed. The relationship between polymer structure and red mud slurry properties as they control polymer performance in settling red muds common to digester and washer circuits will be illustrated. The availability of polymers of varying functionality and viscosity will permit bauxite processors to make significant improvements in the economics of red mud disposal and valuable reagent recovery.

Lime is one of the largest volume chemicals produced in the United States. In 1979 approximately 21 million tons were produced. Lime is, in fact, second only to sulfuric acid as the largest volume basic chemical produced. Lime, also known as quick lime (calcium oxide) and hydrate lime (calcium hydroxide), is the principle alkali used in a multitude of industrial processes. In addition to its use as a principle industrial alkali, lime has experienced dramatic growth in four general market areas during the past 30 years. These four areas are: 1. Water Treatment - Lime is used extensively in treating and purifying water for industrial and potable use, Although significant tonnage is shipped to this market of municipal and industrial water treatment plants, the end-users are widely spread geographically and individual shipments are relatively low tonnage. Using a fuzzy logic controller, a signal applied on the processes may be generated through a linguistic protocol expressing an operator's intuitive control strategies. In this work, fuzzy logic controller and PID controller imposed upon the feedback liquid level control systems for a stirred tank are studied and compared. The construction factors including the shape of membership functions, number of fuzzy variables, number of inputs, number of rules, and different defuzzification methods are considered in design and formulating the fuzzy logic control strategies and algorithms. From the analysis of the strategies and control performances, an optimum controller may be generated by making use of the best combination of these fuzzy construction factors.

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferro silicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker Hill Mine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

The acid leach-solvent extraction processing of oxide copper ores can be improved when selected cation additives are utilized. Bench scale testing showed improvements in both sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction processing. Treatment with the method to be described shows improvement in copper recovery in the acid leaching section as well as reduced acid consumption and reduced iron and aluminum dissolution. Processing the copper bearing leach solution with LIX-64N shows increased loading of the LIX reagent which relates to reduced aqueous and organic flow rates, reduced organic loss and inventory as well as a reduction in the size of mixer-settlers. The use of selected monovalent cations controls fluctuations within the pro- cessing system to accomplish the above named improvements. Additionally, these cations are totally compatible throughout the processing system and are quite inexpensive. Bench scale recycle data will be presented both for the leaching section and the continuous solvent extraction processing section up to (but not including) processing the loaded electrolyte. Material balances as well as major solution component monitoring will also be presented.

Advancement in automation intensifies the need to remove tramp iron from bulk materials being processed and carried on belt conveyors. Although magnets have long been employed for this purpose, it becomes increasingly necessary that magnetic equipment of appropriate types and sizes be selected and advantageously installed -- if maximum benefits are to be derived Tramp iron present in bulk materials consists of ferrous trash, such as wire, bolts, nails, equipment parts, tools, and machine cuttings. The results, if the iron is not removed, are damaging to equipment having close clearances, explosions, or fire, En the case of flammable materials, production downtime losses, and contaminated products.

Strip mining of coal, and to a lesser extent limestone, gravel and other mineral deposits in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States has left many large and small areas of devastated land where mining predated reclamation requirements. In Pennsylvania alone, there are between 250,000 and 370,000 acres of strip-mined land 1,2/. A higher percentage, and a greater total acreage of land in Pennsylvania is in need of some form of reclamation than any other state, with the neighboring states of Ohio and Nest Virginia also having nearly the same magnitude of mining.2/ Recent legislation governing strip mining of coal proposed royalties to cover reclamation of such presently unusable land. However, in Pennsylvania and other states some progress has already been realized by utilizing abandoned strip mines and gravel pits for waste disposal sites. Given acceptable hydrogeologic settings, such use of these mined areas for landfilling has provided the incentive for ultimately restoring unreclaimed land to beneficial use, at no cost to the general public.

This paper deals with problems of groundwater development in an insular circum-Pacific environment, and is not oriented as such to mining and mineral development. Nonetheless, because a reliable water supply is necessary for most mining and related support activities, and since water supplies are limited in many insular parts of the Pacific Basin, groundwater development is a subject which must be frequently addressed. Because many in the audience may be already familiar with groundwater development for continental environments, I have chosen to deal with groundwater occurrence and development problems which for the most part are unique to insular environments. In such environments, the local geology plays a critical role in determining groundwater occurrence and its suitability for development. The three examples discussed in this paper-Hawaii, Guam, and the Marshall Islands-were selected because they illustrate groundwater occurrence in a wide range of geologic conditions. For example, the Hawaiian aquifers consist primarily of basaltic lavas, while Guam is made up of andesitic lavas and coral reef limestones, and the Marshall Islands are coral atoll deposits. Despite differences in aquifer size and rock types, the principal mode of groundwater occurrence at the three sites is similar; thus, development strategies are also similar. Figure 1 shows the location of the three sites.

Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

Electricity, as normally thought of by a layman's definition, is a man- made force that has no color, no odor, is not visible, cannot be heard, yet man can control it and make it perform his work for him. A person dare not cheat on it, for it then will master him. It has laws, rules, and regulations that must be strictly adhered to if it is to perform in the safest, most reliable, and economical manner. In the early days of coal mining the power source was man himself. Later man employed steam and compressed air to reduce his muscle power requirements needed in the extraction of coal. By the turn of the 20th century, electricity had become the most common source of power for the coal industry. Steam and compressed air are still found in use in isolated cases today for specific applications; however, they are rapidly being replaced by electricity. Electrical laws and regulations are quite extensive and somewhat complex for the proper generation and use of electricity. Man-made laws, rules, and regulations for the care and handling of electricity, designed for man's safety, are rigidly enforced by Mine Safety and Health Ad- ministration (MSHA), as well as the various state departments of mines.

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. A highly undesirable side effect of the mining of coal is the release of acid forming chemicals into the ground water system. The disturbance of the ground during mining allows water to flow through the coal bearing strata and mine refuge where it absorbs iron and sulfide ions and thus becomes highly acidic. The highly acid mine water can then contaminate water supplies and can destroy many of the recreational uses of Pennsylvania's waterways. A great deal of effort has been expended to develop methods of controlling groundwater pollution from mine drainage. At the Pennsylvania State University there has been an ongoing effort to under- stand the chemistry of acid mine water formation and the hydrologic environment in which the acidic water migrates from the mine source into the ground water system. As a support to the hydrologic studies, geophysical studies have been used to help determine the geologic structure of the areas under study which are contaminated by acid water. In addition, the geophysical work has been used to define the type of information geophysical methods can give to determine which geophysical methods are most useful and to develop geophysical field procedures.

Longwall mining is the preferred method for removing underground coal since a larger amount of coal can be removed faster and with less waste when compared to the room-and pillar type mining. Thus, the coal tonnage removed each year by longwall mining methods has increased dramatically. However, a high extraction rate results in surface subsidence which has adverse effects on the environment and on surface structures. Predictions of structural damage are dependent on the magnitude of the expected horizontal strains. Three methods for predicting subsidence characteristics are considered in this paper: the graphical method, the profile method, and the finite element method. All three methods can be used to predict ground movements and horizontal strains. However, the finite element method, which takes into account the structural properties of the stratigraphy and equilibrium of the overburden, is theoretically the more logical choice for use in subsidence prediction.

The first Model 480 SALA-HGMS R carousel high gradient magnetic separator was recently manufactured (Figure 1). The carousel's design was based upon the high gradient magnetic separation technology developed and owned by Sala Magnetics Incorporated, Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a short (approximately 300 hours) in-house mechanical and electrical test and break-in period, the carousel was ready for a long term demonstration test. This paper describes the demonstration plant and operational performance of the Model 480 HGMS treating a low grade iron ore tailings. A location convenient to Sala International's main office in Sala, Sweden was desirable because Sala engineers and technicians were to operate the demonstration plant. The Strassa iron ore mine in central Sweden was chosen because it fit most of the criteria that was important for a good demonstration site. The Strassa mine is part of the state owned Svenskt Stal AB. The mine produces about 320,000 tons of iron concentrate per year consisting of 200,000 tons of magnitite concentrate and 120,000 tons of hematite concentrate.

Like most major firms engaged in project management, Dravo Corporation faces a constant challenge to keep its management systems in tune with the ever-increasing demands imposed by larger and more complex projects. This paper suggests that one of the key elements in meeting this challenge is more effective organization of project data. It reveals some of the details of a program at Dravo's Minerals 6 Metals Division which seeks, through better organization of project data, to improve Dravo's capabilities in estimating, cost control, scheduling, performance reporting and material control. In particular, this paper discusses ideas Dravo is developing for improved job numbering, codes of accounts, requisition and purchase order numbering, inventory cataloging, and employee/badge numbering.

Introduction Ball mills are lined drums, either cylindrical in shape or modified cylinders that have either one or both ends of the shell, consisting of conical sections, that rotate about the horizontal axis. Fig. I I shows a cylindrical mill, Fig. 12 a conical ball mill, and Fig. 13 a Tricone ball mill (Hardinge tradename). Steel or iron grinding media, generally in the shape of spheres, are used to grind the ore to the specified product size. In order to obtain more contact area for grinding and to simulate the shape of worn balls, balls have been made with two concave surfaces diametrically opposite each other. Some concentra¬tors, such as Erie Mining Co., have used slugs cut from worn and broken rods to supplement the balls in ball mills and save money otherwise lost as rod scrap. Cylindrical and conical shapes have been tried instead of balls, but balls remain as the most common shape grinding media used in ball mills. Ball mills were a logical development from the earlier pebble mills that used hard natural pebbles such as flint pebbles or sized ore pebbles (obtained from the ore itself) as grinding media. In the early 1900s36 it was found that when cast iron or cast steel balls were used in place of flint or ore pebbles, the mills drew more power and gave greater production capacity. Advances in technology have resulted in the manufacture of ball mills up to 18 ft diam inside shell, drawing up to 8,000 hp. Ball mills are employed to grind ores, especially the more abrasive ores, to finer sizes than can be produced economically in other size¬reduction machines such as roll crushers, hammer mills, and impactors. Ores can be ground dry-dry grinding-or in a slurry-wet grinding-using ball mills. Dry grinding nominally refers to less than I %v moisture by weight. If the moisture content increases by several percent, dry grinding capacity is significantly reduced as shown in Table 17. The usual range of solids content in wet ball-mill slurries is from 65 to 80% by weight. Wet grinding is used to prepare the feed material for unit opera¬tions such as flotation, magnetic separation, gravity concentration, and leaching that require a slurry of liberated valuable mineral and unwanted gangue particles. Dry grinding" is employed to produce feed for agglomeration, pelletizing, and pyrometallurgy processes that require feed that is dry or nearly so and for finely ground industrial mineral products used in the dry state. Dry grinding is also used when minerals cannot be dewatered economically to the required moisture level or when the ground product reacts unfavorably with liquids. For example, cement clinker must be ground dry. Dry grinding requires about 30% more power than wet grinding for comparable size reduction .28 The total power required in a dry¬grinding ball-mill plant including drying may be double that required for a wet-grinding plant. Grinding-media and liner consumption in dry grinding reported as pounds of metal consumed per kilowatt-hour per ton of ore" is 10-20% of that used in wet grinding. The Wabush pellet plant, Point Noire, Que.3o reported ball consumption dropped from 6.3 lb per ton of ore ground to 2.5 lb per ton of ore ground when they converted from wet to dry grinding, and a 30% increase in power consumption. A number of comparisons made on wet and dry grinding of cement raw materials show metal consumption in dry grinding to be 10% of that in wet grinding. The capital costs for wet grinding are generally lower than for dry grinding. When thickening and filtering of the wet-ground product are required, dry grinding may have a lower capital cost. With open-circuit grinding the ball-mill discharge passes directly to the next processing step without being screened or classified and no fraction is returned to the ball mill (Fig. 14). In closed-circuit grinding the ground material, undersize, in the ball-mill discharge is removed either using a screen or a classifier with the oversize being returned to the mill for additional size reduction (Fig. 15). The over¬size material that is returned to the ball mill is called the circulating load. Open-circuit ball-mill grinding requires more power than closed¬-circuit grinding for products containing similar amounts of top-size material. The less the amount of oversize allowed in the product, the longer the ore must remain in the ball mill when grinding in open circuit. This increases the production of extreme fines and thus the consumption of more power. The power required for open-circuit ball-mill grinding can be estimated using the multipliers listed in Table 18 and knowing the power required for closed-circuit grinding to yield the desired product particle size. For example, assuming the desired grind size is 90% passing some specific top size, open-¬circuit grinding would require 1.40 times the power to achieve similar results as closed-circuit grinding.

The overall economics of a coal production unit are governed by a number of interdependent parameters which individually and collectively affect the final result. A business judgement is measured through return on investment considerations and in this respect, a sensitivity analysis proves useful. Figures 1 and 2 show how the various parameters affect return on investment through unfavourable change from planned or expected values. In the case of metallurgical coals, the selling price negotiated is the primary and most sensitive variable, followed by transportation, clean coal yield and capital funds invested in mining. It is clear that coal preparation plant capital and operating costs are the least sensitive to R.O.I. For energy coals, the selling price is determined by heat energy content (x cents per million BTU's) and is therefore not con¬sidered as an interdependent variable. In this case, transportation cost is the major primary factor affecting the level of income. Again the amount of saleable clean coal or total yield has a major effect on return on investment. Most of the factors considered in Figures 1 and 2 are fixed and unfavorable change from planned values becomes critical but clean coal yield is to a great extent controllable during actual operations. Once the theoretical yield for a particular coal has been determined, the optimum return is achieved by approaching this theoretical yield as nearly as possible in practical commercial operation.
