The sequence of events preceeding the discovery of the Mount Emmons molybdenite include some inadvertent near misses by several groups. The events are given in general chronological order to bring out the essentially contemporaneous, but different activities by several groups in two areas on opposite sides of Mount Emmons. The Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit lies in the Elk Mountain mining district. The west edge of the deposit is near the boundary between the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts as shown by the USGS map included (see Fig. 1). Considerable history regarding the Keystone silver-lead-zinc mine is given because of its proximity to the Mount Emmons molybdenite deposit which is on the other side of the mountain from Redwell Basin and where other significant activities took place. It should be noted that there was no documentary evidence available to me that would indicate that molybdenite was recognized to be present on, or under, any part of Mount Emmons, including Redwell Basin, before 1970. Veins containing silver-lead-zinc minerals were discovered in the Elk Mountain and Ruby mining districts about 1872. Some discoveries on the south flank of Mount Emmons about 1880 were developed into the Keystone mine. The Keystone has the largest cumulative production of metal ores of any of the mines in these districts. Most of the 413 Mt (455,473 st) of ore produced from the Keystone mine through August 1967 was produced after 1950. The ore averaged 175.4 gt (5.64 oz per ton) Ag, 2.62% Pb, 5.56% Zn, and 0.72% Cu.

The choice of TBM type is never easy, but it becomes especially challenging when faced with a hard rock tunnel with expected high water flows and pressure. Slurry Shield tunneling has a long history of being used in these conditions to minimize the risk, though this method has brought with it other risks along with cost considerations. At recent projects around the world, another method has been proven to effectively manage these project risks without utilizing Slurry Shield tunneling: Shielded, NonContinuous Pressurized (NCP)-TBM tunneling in rock with a comprehensive grouting program. In this paper, the authors will analyze the use of Shielded NCP TBMs at projects around the world as compared with slurry shield tunneling in rock under water pressure. Recommendations will be given in order to establish a clear picture of the optimal tunneling method.

The microseismic method of detecting instability and high-stress zones in underground mines was first developed in this country by the US Bureau of Mines in the early 1940's (Obert and Duvall, 1957). Early laboratory experiments showed that when competent rocks are stressed in a testing machine, the rock noise rate (number of rock noises per unit time) increases with increasing applied stress. This increase is more pronounced as the ultimate strength of the rock is approached. Subsequent testing of rock noises in underground mines confirmed this laboratory experience and much effort has been directed in recent years to make use of this property to develop a practical method of predicting rock failure. Investigations conducted in the Coeur d'Alene district mines have pointed out a definite relationship between the stress buildup in a rock mass caused by mining activity and the emission of audible and subaudible seismic activity (microseisms). In 1968, a concentrated joint effort by USBM Denver Mining Research Center and American Smelting and Refining Co. at Asarco's Galena mine was undertaken to verify several theories regarding the generation of microseisms (Blake, 1971; Blake, Leighton, and Duvall, 1974; and Kovacs, 1973). Findings indicate that (1) rocks under stress emit detectable seismic energy; (2) the energy source can be located using a triangulation method involving travel time differences to various receiving stations; (3) the rate of release of seismic energy increases with increasing stress; and (4) this increase in noise generally precedes a major rock failure (rock burst).

The chain conveyor is utilized extensively in underground mining to convey raw ore, especially coal. It is estimated that several thousand loading and continuous mining machines rely on this type of conveyance. Although the chain conveyor is both efficient and highly reliable, its use is generally associated with the production of noise levels that often exceed 105 dBA at the operator's position. Thus, it is one of the most significant contributors to the occupational noise problem experienced by miners in the underground coal mining environment. Conventional engineering noise controls that result in an average reduction of 4 dBA have been previously designed and implemented. However, a novel solution involving a change in conveyor operation has been proposed that takes advantage of two aspects of conveyor noise: 1) conveyor noise has an approximately cubic dependence on conveyor chain speed and 2) due to the damping provided by coal, a full conveyor is 5 dBA quieter than an empty one. An engineering analysis has shown that a significant reduction in the operating noise level of a typical continuous miner can be achieved through the use of an adjustable speed drive automatically controlled by a coal loading sensor that maintains a full conveyor at all times. The potential reduction depends primarily on the mining conditions (coal seam thickness and the presence of either rock or water) and varies from 7-18 dBA. Other benefits to be derived from the use of a variable speed drive include reductions in power consumption, dust, and maintenance costs.

"The deposits of the east end of the Mesabi Range cover very large areas, and consist of the same taconite that produces the hematite of the central and western Mesabi. It is not deeply covered with drift, but outcrops boldly in large masses. It is not concentrated locally into enriched bodies separated by leaner areas, but is all a fairly uniform, hard, banded, unaltered chert, carrying about 25 to 30 per cent iron as magnetite.The Mesabi Iron Company, organized by Hayden, Stone & Co., and under the direction of D. C. Jackling, has taken over these deposits and is building a Concentrating plant at the new town of Babbitt, about fourteen miles east of Mesaba, Minn. This plant is to have a capacity of 2,000 to 3,000 tons per day, and is based on the application to this low grade material of the methods which have made the so-called porphyry copper properties so successful.In 1916, an experimental mill was built in Duluth; containing full sized machinery and capable of handling from 100 to 200 tons daily. A considerable tonnage of material was concentrated here during 1916, 1917 and 1918. The work showed that the resulting product could be varied, almost at will, between 60 per cent and 70 per cent iron and .006 per cent to .030 per' cent phosphorus, and that this could be made on a large scale well within the limits of cost set by iron trade conditions. A small special cargo was sent down the lakes, late in 1918, assaying 63.27 per cent iron (natural and dry) and .008 per cent phosphorus; but it is assumed that large scale shipments will normally be of a Bessemer' grade carrying about 63 per cent iron and .020 per cent to .030 per cent phosphorus. This material is a sinter, carrying only traces of sulphur and titanium, with silica between 6 per cent and 10 , per cent, and alumina, lime, magnesia, and manganese, each below 1 per cent. Some of the iron in this sinter is hematite and some is magnetite, the percentages varying according to the treatment given on the sintering machine. Like the analyses, this hematite percentage is within reasonable control. Sinter made from finely ground magnetite has much the structure of coke, being firm yet porous, and gives good account of itself in the blast furnace."

Coal Preparation Terms (General) 1.1 Coal preparation-collectively, physical and mechanical processes applied to coal to make it suitable for a particular use. 1.2 Run of mine (ROM coal)-coal produced by mining operations, before screening, crushing, or preparation. 1.3 Raw coal-coal that has received no preparation other than possibly screening or crushing. 1.4 Raw coal feed-raw coal supplied to a plant or machine, in which it undergoes some form of preparation. 1.5 Coal cleaning-the treatment of coal to lower the mineral matter content (ash). 1.6 Cleaned coal; clean coal-coal produced by a cleaning process (wet or dry). 1.7 Middlings-a product of coal preparation that, by reason of its ash content, is intermediate between coal and discard. It follows therefore that the relative density of middlings is intermediate between those of coal and discard. Middlings may be reprocessed. 1.8 True middlings; bone comparatively high ash particles so nearly homogeneous that their quality cannot readily be improved by crushing and recleaning. 1.9 False middlings; interbanded middlings-middliigs in which the particles consist of bands of coal and shale, and from which the coal may be liberated by crushing 1.10 Refuse-waste material in the raw coal which the cleaning process removes. (See also discard; dirt; stone, No. 1.12). 1.1 1 Reject-the material extracted from the feed during cleaning, for retreatment or discard. 1.12 Discard; dirt; stone--the material extracted from the raw coal and finally discarded. 1.13 Recirculation-the operation in which the whole or part of a product from a process is returned to the feed to the process, e.g., the return of the crushed overflow from a screen to the screen feed for rescreening. 1.14 Foreign coal-coal received at a preparation plant from a colliery other than that to which the plant is attached. 1.15 Imported coal-coal coming from a foreign country, or other state within the country. 1.16 Low-grade coal combustible material that has only limited uses owing to undesirable characteristics (eg., ash content or size). 1.17 Segregation-partial separation of a previously mixed material into its constituents, occurring as a result of differences in either particle size or relative density. 2. Cleaning Characteristics 2.1 Washability-amenability of coal to improvement in quality by cleaning. 2.2 Float-and-sink analysis-the division of a sample into relative density fractions with defined limits, the proportions of the fractions being expressed as percentages of the total sample, commonly with an indication of the ash percentage (and other characteristics, if required) of each fraction.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24v0 of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50v0 of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include: • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. • Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. "Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed onto clay surfaces or inner layers, or organically bound. Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis. Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2,300 ppm TREE. Using a laboratory flotation column to limit hydraulic entrainment, the TREE content was further enriched to around 4,700 ppm, which equated to an enrichment ratio of 10:1.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets and batteries (Binnemans et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015). REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal byproducts has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials.The average REE content of the world’s coal resources is around 60 to 70 ppm (Zhang et al., 2015). There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia with contents of 300 to 1,000 ppm, the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky in the United States with contents around 500 ppm and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, with contents of 72 to 483 ppm (Birk and White, 1991; Seredin, 1996; Hower, Ruppert and Eble, 1999; Blissett, Smalley and Rowson, 2014). The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal byproducts can be classified into three types: (1) rare earth minerals, such as monazite and xenotime, (2) ion-adsorbed REEs on clays and (3) REEs associated with organic matrices. The rare earth minerals in coal and coal byproducts are very small in particle size, generally on the micrometer and/or nanometer scales (Honaker et al., 2014). Froth flotation, which concentrates minerals based on surface chemistry differences, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime and bastnaesite (Abeidu, 1972; Cheng, Holtham and Tran, 1993; Pavez and Peres, 1994; Pavez, Brandao and Peres, 1996; Jordens et al., 2014). As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of rare earth minerals from coal and coal byproducts."

In Oct. 1981, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corp. began producing silver bullion from the Escalante mine and mill complex, located in southwestern Utah. Current in-place reserves are estimated at 2.42 Mt (2.67 million st) of ore, containing about 936 t (33 million oz) of silver at an average grade of 428.5 g/t (12.5 oz/st). The vein-type deposit is being mined underground through a decline that is currently 864 m (2,835 ft) in length, but will ultimately be at least 1.5 km (5,100 ft) long. The mine is completely mechanized with rubber-tired equipment, and is producing 680 t/d (750 stpd) of ore, five days a week, or 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy). Additional capacity is available. The cyanide leach mill and associated refinery are presently producing 4.35 t/month (140,000 oz/month) of silver bullion-an an¬nual rate of about 52.25 t (1.68 million oz). With minor modifications, the mill can produce up to about 70 t/a (2.25 million oz/year), and expansion is currently underway. History The Escalante property is located 68 km (42 miles) west of Cedar City, UT, on the west side of the Escalante Valley, where the vein forms a gentle ridge in an area of low, rolling hills. For years, the vein has been the object of considerable exploration, but never became more than a sporadic producer, primarily due to low silver prices. Heber Holt of Enterprise, UT, staked the original four claims in 1896; they were patented in 1910. During the next 48 years, limited exploration and mining activity was conducted on the property. Systematic evaluation and development did not, however, begin until March 1958, when Samuel S. Arentz, a prominent mining engineer and consultant, formed several joint ventures with mining and oil companies that conducted drilling, drifting, mining, and water drawdown tests on the property. However, it remained uneconomic, principally because of low silver prices and costs for pumping large flows of underground water. In 1975, Ranchers obtained an option on the property and in 1979 began a drilling program. As of May 1982, the company had drilled 70 core holes, bringing the number of exploratory holes drilled on the property to 138. Test mining began in 1979 as silver prices increased, and full mine development began in 1980. Mill construction began in Sept. 1980, and on Aug 29, 1981, the first ore was fed to the mill.

Introduction From 1973 through 1986, a total of 12 fires involving oil-flooded rotary screw compressors (OFRSC) were reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Most of these incidents were attributed to faulty or by-passed safeguards, or improper maintenance. The cause of a fire in an OFRSC is unique when compared to other types of compressors. A compressor inspection checklist is provided here that can be referenced when conducting regularly scheduled maintenance operations. This checklist and a well-planned program of periodic training and maintenance should help minimize the probability of fires and explosions in OFRSC's. Operation A rotary screw compressor operates on the principle of positive displacement of air. Compressed air in this type of compressor is produced by the meshing of two helical rotors, or screws, as they rotate within a steel housing called a stator. The male rotor normally has four lobes and is driven either directly or indirectly - through a gear assembly - by a motor. It intermeshes with a female rotor having six cavities. Figure 1 explains the compression mechanism: (1) Atmospheric air is drawn into the stator by the suction action of the two rapidly rotating rotors. (2) As the rotors rotate past the intake port, air is trapped in the stator and in the cavities between the rotors. (3) Further movement of the rotors causes an increased reduction in volume, compressing the entrapped air. (4) Compressed air is expelled at the discharge port in the bottom of the stator at a pressure and quantity determined by the particular compressor rotor design parameters, such as length, diameter, and speed. Radial bearings on the male and female rotors compensate for radial loading on the shaft and position the rotors within the stator. Thrust bearings on the discharge end of the compressor prevent rotor misalignment due to thrust developed during the compression cycle. This design prevents the male and female rotors from making contact with each other or the stator. A clearance of 0.07 to 0.1 mm (0.003 to 0.005 in.) exists between the two rotors and the stator. For this reason, there is virtually no wear on the rotors or stator, and the unit is relatively maintenance-free. Oil is injected into the compressor and serves to cool, seal, and lubricate. When air is compressed from atmospheric pressure to some higher discharge pressure, a specific amount of heat is produced. This heat is sometimes referred to as the adiabatic heat of compression. JAMES BOYD 29.1-STAFF-AND-LINE ORGANIZATION Industrial organizations are established primarily to coordinate the activities of many individuals working toward a specific goal. In mining, the goals can vary widely, and the skills necessary to reach them likewise will vary from operation to operation. It is essential to keep in mind the principal point that an organization embodies the necessary skills which supplement each other and achieve a given objective. Those who direct such an organization are grouped together as "management" and accept the responsibilities for the regulation, administration, supervision and guidance of the enterprise. Those who comprise the "administration" and have supervisory authority are referred to as the "executives." In the early days of mining it was common for one executive to exercise virtually complete control over the entire organization, and direct its operation from a central office. However, the science of management has advanced significantly since then. Mining organization administration now allocates increased authority and flexibility to those in direct-line responsibility, and organizes competent people in specialized fields to provide supervisors with guidance where it is needed in day-to-day operations. Few mining companies today are confined to one operation. Therefore, highly developed skills can be provided in the staff which assists management. This is known as staff-and-line organization, illustrated, in general, in Fig. 29-1. Each operation requires diverse skills for the carrying out of specific functions. The acquisition and training of those with such skills is an important operation in assembling organizations. An organization normally is modified to accommodate individuals rather than being a "hard and fast" mold into which people are fitted. The modern manager is inclined to organize to minimize central direction, with delegation to line executives, providing staff whose day-to-day operations, in cooperation with line executives, coordinate a continuing drive toward the organization's objectives. The staff officers, therefore, tend to become what could be described as parts of the president's brain, dealing with specific areas requiring certain skills. They do not necessarily direct operations, but watch them to be sure that the skills which they have themselves developed can be transmitted to line operations by persuasion rather than by direct authority. The elements of management requiring staff assignments are: 1. Planning, which, at staff level, is only a coordinating activity. Planning is done at all levels in the organization. 2. Engineering. 3. Finance. 4. Control. 5. Personnel and industrial relations, which set personnel policies, including salary plans and the means of handling relations with the unions. 6. Research, which, in a modern organization, is essential to progress and needs to be overseen at the top. 7. Legal staff to see that all operations of the company are provided with sound legal advice, and that the company's policies stay within the law.

The Amdel Thickener Interface Gauge (TIG) provides continuous on-line measurement of the level of the liquid/solid interface in thickeners and Counter Current Decantation (CCD) washers. Unlike other interface level measurement systems, the TIG also determines the span of the transition zone. The transition zone is the region between the clear liquid overflow zone and the compressed solids zone. The Thickener Interface Gauge determines the level of the interface by measuring the natural radioactivity of the solids in the thickener tank using an array of up to twelve detectors mounted vertically in a stainless steel probe. All solids contain low levels of natural radioactivity while the liquid phase generally does not. The concentration of natural radioactivity at each level in the thickener therefore depends on the concentration of solids. The radiation emitted by the solids is converted to electrical pulses by the detectors in the probe and the pulse-rate provides an accurate measurement of the density. A typical count-rate profile is presented in Figure 1. The vertical axis indicates the depth in the tank referenced to the surface of the liquid. The horizontal axis indicates the count-rate measured by the TIG probe, this count-rate is proportional to the density and can be used to determine the settling rate. The count-rate at the top of the graph is relatively low, this region corresponds to the clear overflow zone which contains virtually no solids. Moving down the vertical axis the count-rate increases dramatically at the level of the transition zone where the solids content increases with the depth in the tank. In this region the settling conditions of the solid particles change from free settling to compression. Moving further down the vertical axis the count-rate reaches a plateau where the count-rate remains relatively constant although there are often small fluctuations, this region corresponds to the solids compression zone. The liquid/solid interface as measured by the TIG corresponds to the depth at which the count-rate crosses the target count-rate which is generally selected to be midway between the liquid count-rate and the compressed solids count-rate. The length of the TIG probe is selected to cover the typical operating range of the liquid/solid interface in the thickener or washer. If, for example, the minimum bed level is 3.0 metres below the surface of the liquid then the probe length is selected to extend 30 metres below the surface. The TIG probe can include up to twelve detectors and the se are spaced over the measurement range. For small measurement ranges of around one metre 4 to 6 detectors would normally be used while for larger measurement ranges of three metres or more twelve detectors would be supplied.

In addition, the trend towards digitalization does not stop at the tunnel portal. A shortage of skilled personnel and the ever-present wish to increase workplace safety, quality and system performance automation, operatorassist or even autonomous systems have become key development targets. The paper will present the current state of the art in light of these special conditions.

"In 1995 and 2003, the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) conducted surveys to determine the number of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) being used in underground coal mines in the United States. The survey reports showed data for the different AMS manufacturers, the different types of equipment monitored, and the different type of gas sensors and their locations. Since the last survey in 2003, MSHA has changed the regulation requirements for early fire detection along the belt haulage entries. As of December 31, 2009, point-type heat sensors were prohibited for use for an early fire detection system; instead carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are now required. This report will examine the number of AMS currently used in underground mines in the United States to see if there is a change in their use. The locations and parameters monitored by AMS are also discussed. INTRODUCTION The last survey conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) used in underground coal mines in the United States (US) was in 2003 [1]. The survey report states that since 1995 there had been a steady increase in the use of AMS in underground coal mines as the technology of CO sensors was improved by manufacturers. AMS had become more reliable and some CO sensors could be purchased with the capability to discriminate between the CO produced from a fire versus CO produced from diesel equipment. This increase in reliability had reduced the number of false alarms and the response time. The faster response time to a developing fire allowed for the miners to take the necessary action to put out the fire or exit the mine. It should also be noted that at the time of last MSHA survey, some mines still used point-type heat sensors to detect the presence of a fire on conveyor belts. This detection method works by measuring the temperature of the air around the sensor. As a fire starts to develop, smoke and hot gases are produced from the combustion process, and the air is heated up. Once the air and gases reach a designated temperature detected by the point-type heat sensor, a fire alarm signal is generated. Studies have shown that the response times for detecting the presence of a fire using CO sensors are much shorter than using point-type heat sensors [2]. Finally, since the last MSHA survey, regulations have changed on the type of automatic fire detection systems permitted to be used in conveyor belt entries. As of December 31, 2009, point-type heat sensors are not permitted to be used for fire detection in underground coal mines in the US; instead CO sensors are required as a replacement (30 CFR 75.1103-4). This study will examine how the changing of the above regulations has impacted the use of CO sensors in underground coal mines in the US compared to their use based on the last MSHA survey. Importantly, in the previous MSHA survey, the data was recorded for producing and non-producing coal mines. In this study, only the data from the producing coal mines was recorded. Data was collected from a total of 235 coal mines for this study with the help of the MSHA district offices."

It is imperative that the hydrogeologic frame- work and the ground water flow systems of a Potential mine area be investigated prior to initiation of mining. Such investigations are necessary so that potential mine water inflow problems can be anticipated and controlled. Obvious difficulties can arise if large inflows of ground water occur in underground workings. Costs of water removal and disposal, if not foreseen and included in economic planning, can severely limit or eliminate profit from a mining operation. Safety problems associated with large inflows are an additional potential problem. The inflow of water into a mine necessarily alters the associated ground water system. The inflow also may impact nearby surface water regimes, depending upon the interaction of the surface water and ground water systems. The inflow of water into a mine inevitably causes a decline in the ground water levels in the vicinity of the mine. This decline may be restricted to a small area or it may extend a considerable distance, depending upon the hydrogeologic properties of the associated hydrostratigraphic units. A decrease in surface flow will result if the area of ground water level decline intersects a stream or spring that is hydraulically connected to the ground water system. Mine inflow problems historically have been evaluated after-the-fact. Premining hydrologic investigations only recently have been initiated. Brown's (1977)* report on anticipated hydrologic impacts of oil shale mining in the Piceance Basin of Colorado is an example of premining hydrologic planning. Observed difficulties inherent in designing a data collection network and then utilizing the data to predict mine inflow have led us to the preparation of this manuscript. This manuscript reflects a two-phase effort. The first phase describes and develops analytical and numerical techniques for mine inflow prediction. Emphasis in this section is placed on the selection and application of data collection techniques and data analysis procedures. The second phase applies the prediction technique(s) developed during phase 1 to two existing mines. The objective of phase 1 efforts is to evaluate the hydrologic variables associated with surface water systems and ground water systems that can affect the inflow of water into an underground mine. Subsequently these variables are incorporated into predictive techniques for estimating underground mine water inflow and its effect on associated ground water and surface water systems. The specific objectives of phases 1 and 2 are to: 1) Determine the hydrologic parameters required for predicting underground mine water in- flow and the potential effects of the inflow on surface and ground water systems. The hydrologic parameters represent both premining and past initiation conditions. 2) Outline methods for obtaining the necessary input data for the predictive techniques in pre- mining and post initiation periods. 3) Present existing numerical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow including assumptions Ad required input. 4) Evaluate existing numerical techniques previously tabulated based on their applicability to mine water inflow prediction. 5) Attempt to develop analytical techniques for predicting underground mine water inflow. 6) Develop, through modification of existing models, a general mathematical model as a numerical technique for predicting underground mine water inflow and the resultant effects on surface and ground water systems. 7) Apply the predictive techniques to two existing mines selected for this purpose. 8) Compare the predicted inflow rates to measured inflow rates at both mines. 9) Compare predicted impact on district hydrology to observed impacts where possible. 10) Evaluate the predictive technique.

There are technical and commercial limitations to using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1,000-ppm fluorine affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters. Price penalties are normally applied to copper concentrates with high fluorine contents. Several process alternatives to resolve this issue were studied at the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Technology Center, Santa Luzia, Brazil. These alternatives included modifications to conventional sulfuric acid plants so that they can use high fluorine concentrates; removal of fluorine-containing minerals by flotation using depressants; selective leaching of fluorine minerals; and sulfuric acid leaching of the copper concentrates. As a result of this research, a hydro¬metallurgical process to remove fluorine and upgrade copper concentrates was developed by the CVRD.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in the summer of 1983, in the Gravelly Range, approximately 25 miles south of Ennis, Montana. Initial drilling indicated a plus-million-ton ore body of high-purity talc. Preliminary analyses were performed on the ore cuttings, .including chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. The results indicated the talc was similar to that currently being marketed from Montana and probably would have good commercial value.

Discussion by N. Standish and P.N. Standish Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage-"the bottom line evaluator." Correct. Theory Definitions Coal bulk density is the ratio of the mass of a collection of discrete particles to the volume that it occupies (ASA, 1980). There can be no possible argument about this definition. Mass and volume are readily measured both in laboratory and large scale installations. So, to obtain the bulk density, one simply divides the measured mass by the measured volume. It is here that we come unstuck as everybody who has ever had to reconcile book values with the measured stock tonnages knows. Where does the problem originate? Almost invariably in a too casual a reading of the above definition and the words "a collection of discrete particles." The word collection means "a number of objects collected or gathered together, viewed as a whole" (The Oxford English Dictionary, 1989). Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This paper brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.INTRODUCTIONMinerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, 20 year life of mine is not uncommon and 75 years is not unheard of. The process automation architecture selected must therefore be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an “extractive” industry that is very physically-oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce very variable outputs. But, times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers, to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and non-linear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contribution are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.
