Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator's position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .

INTRODUCTION The Idarado mine lies high in the San Juan Moun¬tains on the divide between the Uncompahgre and San Miguel Rivers and consists of a consolidation of a number of old and prominent mining properties through which course some famous and very produc¬tive veins. Among the better known are the Smuggler, Tomboy, Montana-Argentine, Black Bear, Liberty Bell, Virginius, Flat, Barstow, and Japan, as well as many others. Most of these veins have been extensively mined over the past century and in the last three decades the Montana-Argentine and Black Bear veins have been the backbone of the Idarado mine; therefore, the descrip¬tion of the veins is limited to them. Access to the mine is through either the Treasury tunnel, whose portal is below Red Mountain Pass on US Highway 550 at an elevation of 3244 m (10,643 ft), or the Mill Level tunnel entrance 3.2 km (2 miles) east of Telluride, CO, at an elevation of 2761 m (9060 ft). The Treasury tunnel intersects the Black Bear vein 2643 m (8670 ft) from the portal and the Mill Level tunnel intersects the Argentine vein 2179 m (7150 ft) from the portal. Mining is by shrinkage stoping from slusher sublevels. The size of the scope blocks varies somewhat, but the standard size is 67 to 76 m (220 to 250 ft) long and 61 to 76 m (200 to 250 ft) high. The mine ranks either first or second in Colorado in yearly production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. It is 9.6 km (6 miles) from the Red Mountain plant to the Pandora plant, via interconnecting drifts and raises. There are engineering offices at both plants as a matter of convenience. The Red Mountain plant in¬cludes the company general offices, warehouse, carpen¬ter and machine shops, and mine change room. The Pandora plant consists of the mill and assay office, ma¬chine shops, and mine change room. The flotation mill has a capacity of 1632 t/d (1800 stpd), making a bul¬lion product and separate concentrates of lead, copper, and zinc. HISTORY OF THE MINE The Montana-Argentine vein was first extensively worked by the Tomboy Gold Mines Co., Ltd., a British concern. This company mined the stoped areas above the Ophir level between 1910 and the late 1920s and most of the stoped areas above the 2100 level between 1900 and the late 1920s. Gold was the principal ore metal mined. The area between the Revenue and Ophir levels was mined chiefly by the Revenue Mines Co. between 1900 and 1910. The ore was worked from the Revenue tun¬nel, which portals in Canyon Creek. Gold and silver were the chief metals recovered. The stopes between the 1700 and Revenue levels, as well as some higher stopes, were mined by Telluride Mines Inc. during the 1940s. The Mill Level tunnel was driven by that company from 1945 to 1948. Lead and zinc then became economically more important than the precious metals. In 1953, Idarado purchased Telluride Mines, which merged with the parent company in 1956. The Black Bear vein was first extensively worked by the Black Bear Mining Co. in the 1900s and by the Colorado Superior Mining Co. from about 1914 until snowslides at the mine camp [altitude 3750 m (12,300 ft)] terminated the company's operations in 1924. Leasers operated at intervals until 1934. The Treasury tunnel, formerly the Hammond tunnel, had been started before 1900 and reached the 1646-m (5400-ft) mark early in the 1900s, at which time activity lagged until the late 1930s. In the early 1940s, Idarado extended the Treasury tunnel from its heading at 1646 m (5400 ft) to the Black Bear vein and established a raise connec¬tion with the 600 level, the lowest level in the old mine. Since completion of initial work in the mid-1940s, systematic development of the mine, both in the driv¬ing of new headings and the utilization of older open¬ings, has resulted in the present extensive network of workings. GEOLOGY Introduction The oldest rocks of the area are the Precambrian metamorphic rocks, the Uncompahgre formation which are massive quartzites, some phyllites and slates, and dolomitic or limestone beds. West-dipping Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata lie on the Uncompahgre formation. These units are separated by a major angular uncomformity from overlying, essentially horizontal, Tertiary formations that include the basal Telluride conglomerate and several thousand feet of overlying volcanic rock. Intrusive rocks, mostly Tertiary in age, are common in the area, and are in the form of dikes, stocks, and sills. Dikes are very closely associated with some of the ore veins (Mayer). Description of Veins The Black Bear and Argentine veins range from 0.6 to 7.6 m (2 to 25 ft) in width, but in most places are 1.5 to 2 m (5 to 7 ft) wide. They vary in character from a well-defined tabular structure between sharp "frozen" walls, or gouge seams, to an irregular zone of quartz and quartz-sulfide stringers. Many gouge seams within the veins make the veins blocky and loose. Common gangue minerals in the veins include quartz, pyrite, rhodonite, chlorite, sericite, clay minerals, epidote, calcite, adularia, rhodocrosite, fluorite, and specularite. Quartz constitutes 60 to 70% of the veins and varies widely in character, ranging in color from clear through white, gray, and green, to amethyst. Chlorite, sericite, the clay minerals, and fine-grained quartz are common alteration products of the vein walls and of wall rock fragments in the veins. During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the foundry, the sand was examined in detail. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

Yilgam Star treats a gold bearing ore which has an association with pyrohotite and pentlandite (Fe,Ni)9S8 Nickel behaves similar to gold in cyanide solution, it leaches in cyanide to form a number of species. It adsorbs like the noble metals on carbon. During smelting Nickel causes significant problems in the crucible as the melting point of nickel is much higher (1452 °C) than gold (1040 CC). The crucible became overheated, holed and increases furnace downtime. To overcome such dif­ficulties an investigation was carried out to reduce the amount of nickel on steel wool during stripping. Yilgam Star has got I.P.S. high pressure zadra stripping system which works on 400 kpa, at 140 °C. The trend of gold and nickel profiles has been observed with varying caustic concentrations. The gold and nickel profile has been monitored with the addition of cyanide in the stripping liquor. It has been ascertained that at lower caustic levels the nickel ion remains in solution and is subsequently not electro­won. The cyanide concentration of0.4% (Wt/Vol) keeps nickel ion in solution and induces metallic nickel to produce nickel ion as NiCN.

A group of gold deposits in southeastern Ecuador, near the town of Zamora, have become the focus of intensive mining activity, due to their extremely high gold grade (unconfirmed reports of about 50 g/t or 1.4 oz per st, or more). The deposits at Nambija and other prospects in the district are hosted by a sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are present within a large xenolith orpendant within alkalic phases of the Jurassic Zamora Batholith. The xenolith, unknown in size, is composed of various island arc lithologies (limestones, shales, sandstones, tuffs and flows). All have been altered to some degree by skarn-hornfelde alteration assemblages. Mineralized areas appear to be localized within a linear zone containing tectonic and intrusion breccias that cross-cut a complex calcic skarn assemblage developed within the xenolith. Although the nature of the host rocks appears to have exerted some control on mineralization, the high-grade ore is concentrated along north-northeast trending breccias, faults and dikes that crosscut the flat-lying stratigraphy and skarn alteration as suggested by the strong linear trend of workings in the district.

This paper addresses the problem of seeing into rock. We will consider two methods, first to use radar, or electromagnetic wave pulses, to probe into rock ahead of mining and second to use sonar, or sound wave pulses, to probe into rock. Both are non destructive and capable of giving information on hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards might be a borehole full of water possibly leading to a high pressure aquifer somewhere above the mine level, changes in rock type, or the edge or top of a salt dome. Most of the work described in this paper deals with probing through rock salt which we have done successfully to over 2000 meters maximum range. We discuss first the radar probing and then the sonar probing. This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

Cessation of open pit mining in 1996 at the McLaughlin hot-spring type gold deposit has resulted in the development of two pit lakes that will be managed as permanent lakes with a total storage capacity of 10,000 acre-feet. The south pit lake developed from alkaline ground water infiltration and had an initial pH of 7.2. It contained high concentrations of boron and chloride, indicating that it consisted of a mix of meteoric and evolved connate waters. Numerous carbon dioxide gas vents were present initially in the shallow south pit lake, but as the pit lake increased in depth, gas venting ceased and carbon dioxide is retained in the lower layer of the chemically stratified lake. Continued increase of dissolved carbon dioxide in the lower layer increases the potential for a limnic eruption. A chemocliie occurs at a depth of 47 m. The upper layer of the lake has lower pH, temperature, and conductivity than the lower layer. Effluent from ore and waste rock piles directed into the south pit lake has contributed to high levels of antimony, arsenic, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc. Iron oxyhydroxide is abundant in mine effluent that enters the pit lake and adsorption onto this phase has lowered the arsenic and antimony concentrations. The north pit lake formed primarily from winter surface runoff. The acidic water, pH 4.56, initially had high concentrations of cobalt, mercury, and nickel derived from weathering products of pyritized serpentinite and shales. Buffering by wall rocks has established a slightly alkaline pH of 7.62. The concentrations of trace metals in the north pit lake have substantially decreased due to continued dilution of the lake by surface runoff and remediation of parts of the pit walls that have been covered by backfill.

Cement production involves the processing of raw materials that contain - Si02, A1203, Fe203, CaO, MgO, LOI (loss of ignition), S03, K20, Na2O, Ti02, P2055 and Cl- to produce the synthetic mineral mixture called "clinker". The use of other additives - sandstone, flyash, iron ore, and clay - is also mandatory in order to achieve the optimum blending requirements of cement. However, the use of these additives needs to be minimized due to their significantly higher costs ($/Ton). This paper presents a mixed integer programming (MIP)-based optimum quarry scheduling algorithm, which is used to generate quarry plans, satisfying geometric and production capacity constraints while providing minimum cost/optimum blend of raw materials mix to a cement plant. The benefits of this new methodology are demonstrated on a case study.

BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980's, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. JOHN HAMRIC: Our next speakers are Richard Ghent, manager of environmental health and safety for CF Industries, Hardee Phosphate Complex, in Wauchula, Florida. Richard has 20 years' experience with environmental health and safety affairs. He has a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Carolina. With him is Daniel Warnock, who is supervisor of safety and training also at the Hardee Phosphate Complex. Daniel's experience is in safety programs and electrical training. Their presentation is "Regulations Versus Management Practice." RICHARD GHENT: Written procedures give structure to safety programs. At their best, they are brief and understandable to facility personnel and clearly identify roles and responsibilities. At worst, they attempt to recite the entire regulation they are intended to address. Some regulations, such as OHSA's Hazard Communication Standard, require employers to develop, implement, and maintain a written program. As written programs and procedures are developed, some basic questions arise: Is the program designed to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements or does management expect the program to go beyond compliance to some higher level of performance? Management may have difficulty in measuring and communicating performance expectations in safety. A facility with 4 million safe work hours does not suddenly become unsafe the day their safety record is broken. Generally, management expects safety programs to meet regulatory requirements and to protect the employer from enforcement actions and fines from regulatory agencies. Management also expects that safety programs will result in a safer work environment with fewer incidents, accidents, and near misses. But it is difficult to know when a safety program has succeeded. If the program is expected to go beyond compliance, what other standards should be included (e.g., ANSI standards, company management practices, lessons learned from inspections and audits, recommendations from safety committees, etc.) in the

For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we've been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we'd like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

"Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

The Tambomachay ore deposit (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W, about 6 km north of the town of Cuzco, Peru) consists of Cu hosted in arkosic red beds of the Kayra Formation (Lower Eocene). Bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covelite, digenite, malachite, and chrysocolla occur disseminated in thin layers and in veinlets. The occurrence of the copper ores in a part of the red bed sequence containing green reducing layers, the presence of organic matter in interstices between the hypogene sulfides, and the sulfur composition of the copper sulfides (δ34S values between -16.9 and -12.4‰ vs VCDT) pointing to bacterial sulfate reduction, are strong arguments to propose that mineralization was caused by copper-bearing oxidizing saline basinal fluids that precipitate copper sulfides when they meet reduced sulfur in an organic matter-rich horizon. Faults parallel to the regional Tambomachay Fault could have acted as feeders for oxidizing basinal copper-bearing fluids. Fluid migration was probably driven by tectonically-induced topography gradient. INTRODUCTION A number of red bed Cu occurrences are known in the Cuzco region in the early Eocene – early Oligocene San Jerónimo Group (Gregory, 1916; Carlotto et al., 1996, 2011; Loza et al., 2004). In the past, copper ores were extracted in several small-scale mines in the surroundings of Cuzco, including Tambomachay, Tipón, and Zurite in the Cusco province and Ushpa, Guilda, Giovanna, and Langui in the Sicuani Province. The abandoned Tambomachay Mine (13°28'36.78"S, 71°57'35.98"W), about 6 km to the north of the town of Cuzco (Romero et al., 2015; Salcedo et al., 2017, Fig. 1) was chosen as the main site for the present research aimed to better study the genesis of these copper occurrences. Results deriving from fieldwork, microscopic characterization of ore and host rock, and sulfur isotope determination suggest that the key factor for the genesis of the copper ores is that copper transported by oxidizing basinal fluids is trapped by reduced sulfur of bacteriogenic origin located in a part of the red bed sequence that shows intercalatins of green reduced horizons.

Direct smelting of copper in a single vessel has long been the extractive metallurgist's dream. Such a process offers the important advantages of (i) maximum use of the energy available from oxidizing the sulphur and iron of the concentrate; (ii) restriction of SO2 emissions to a single constant-strength source; (iii) minimum materials handling and (iv) elimination of at least one process step. Extensive developmental work was carried out in the 1960's and 1970's to implement such single-step processes. Some of the processes reached the prototype stage and it appeared that copper smelting technology was on the threshold of a new, efficient, minimum-pollution era. Since that time, however, the forward thrust has slowed and single-step smelting is still a process of the future. The paper describes in detail the potential advantages of single-step smelting; its history and current status; and the reasons why it has not been adopted industrially. It concludes that the potential benefits of single-step smelting are powerful and that many of the difficulties encountered in the 1970's will be overcome in the 1980's.

Within the national and international strategy of the German based construction company HOCHTIEF, the majority of its business units is equipped with the comprehensive software package ARISTOTELES. This software is a powerful business information system for all accounting and controlling related processes in medium-sized and large construction and other related companies. Due to the complexity of the software, time constraints, and limited financial resources an implementation of this software package requires thorough project management. In this paper the relevant elements of project management are outlined based on practical experiences gained during this international IT - implementation project. Special emphasis is directed to the identification and management of potential risks. In this case particular acknowledgement was given to the multinational nature of the project and modernization of the business. This includes thorough reorganization of the company, significant changes of job requirements, and substantial trainings for its employees. At the same time key success factors like knowledge transfer, adoption of Czech legal requirements, commitment of management, networked thinking, and integrated project planning come into play. The costs for implementation had to be carefully evaluated because the software was implemented in a country with a considerably low cost I price level. All these impacts to the business had to be managed within the scope of transformation of business and political environment from socialist to market driven economy.
