In fact, thermal exploration has received relatively little attention in modern times compared to other potential field geophysical methods. There have evolved, however, two basic approaches to thermal exploration for subsurface heat sources. These are 1) the measurement of surface temperatures by infrared, thermal imagery and 2) the measurement of geothermal gradients in exploratory drill holes.

Permeable reactive barriers (PRB) are one of the most promising systems for groundwater remediation. PRB are constructed with the purpose to intercept the contaminated flow and to degrade it as a big reactive filter. The most common type of reactive barriers is realized by excavating a trench and by filling it with a substance able to treat the contaminants dissolved in the water. Another type of PRB is obtained by realizing a line of wells in which chemically active compounds are injected. A new method for barrier construction has been studied at DIGITA?s laboratories. It makes use of the waterjet technology to increase soil permeability and to inject active compounds. This technology is especially suitable in the case of deep contaminated aquifers where traditional construction methods are difficult to apply. The paper describes the experimental apparatus especially designed and constructed and the activities carried out to investigate the relationship between waterjet operative parameters and the penetration of the jet in the soil. In conclusion, on the basis of the experimental results, the economical feasibility of the technique is evaluated.

One of the fundamental precepts of experimentation is the isolation of a single variable to quantify its individual effect. Unfortunately, the variability of natural rock joints has frustrated such isolation. This variability and the high cost of securing a large member of natural joints has lead to increasing experimental dependence on stage shearing, artificial tension fractures and/or model materials. The new apparatus described herein allows for the first time replication of real joints with field scale asperities. It employs a diamond band-saw blade with computer controlled feed table to cut joints with high precision. The feed system is capable of placement to tolerances similar to those of a high quality computer plotter. The accompanying software allows the table to cut any desired joint shape (repeating or non-repeating) within certain, over-all size limitations. Resulting joint surface dimensions and roughness as well as shear resistance indicates that the joint surfaces are reproduced with a precision similar to that possible for the control of other experimental variables such as normal and shear forces.

Lithium-bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias, Brazil, were investigated to determine whether there is a correlution between the lithium content of the mineral and the color of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high-grade lithium ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tour-maline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but that the color of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink color of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely due to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black color of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepidolites appear to be lithium- rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or Fe3+.

The basic compression-yield concept of roof support for mine roadways requires that the mine roof be placed in a state of compressive stress. The compressive stress may be achieved using a support system such as an entry truss or other specialty truss device. Furthermore, the roof must be allowed to yield, but with great resistance when abutment loads are placed on the roadway. The resisted yielding may be provided using a new yieldable steel prop, known by the trade name, YIPP~. The yieldable steel prop can allow as much as 1.5 m[5 ft] of yield, or up to approximately 40% of the opening height, while providing a resistance in excess of 60 mt[66st]. More than fifteen mining operations including coal, trona and hard rock mines have field tested the YIPPI . Present results indicate that the yieldable prop provides a cost-effective alternative to wood cribs, concrete cribs, hydraulic props and other steel prop supports. The paper describes the YIPPI including its unique principle of operation, its applications and actual field performance.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.

Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

"The dissolution behavior of lateritic nickel ore containing 1.2% Ni, 40.6% Fe, 9.5% SiO2 and 9.59% MgO by sulfuric acid was investigated. The ore was characterized adequately by different techniques such as chemical analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements. The characterization results did not reveal any distinct mineral phase for nickel; it was associated with mineral phases like goethite, hematite, chromite and serpentine in various proportions. The beneficiation studies by hydrocyclone, magnetic separation and flotation did not enrich the nickel value. Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation indicated only 2%Ni with 28.9% yield. Consequently, the recovery of nickel values from the lateritic ore by acid leaching under different conditions was studied. The kinetics of leaching obey the first order rate equations. The recovery of nickel was found to be influenced by temperature. It was observed that at an acid concentration of 2M, leaching temperature 363 K, time 240 min and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10, it is possible to leach out more than 95% Ni.IntroductionThe demand for nickel is ever increasing. Nickel is used to impart specific properties to steel, titanium and aluminium, and also is used in petrochemicals, catalysts, batteries, etc. It has been estimated that nickel oxide ores account for about 70% of the world nickel reserves. However, most nickel is sourced from sulfide ores. Nickel is extracted from sulfide ore by size reduction, followed by flotation to obtain a nickel-rich concentrate. The concentrate is then pyrometallurgically processed by smelting to produce a nickel-rich matte after discarding an iron-rich slag. Due to the increasing demand for nickel in stainless steel and other alloys, nickel is also extracted from many secondary sources. The recovery of nickel from oxide ores is now gaining momentum, and more exploitation of this ore is being attempted by advanced as well as environmentally feasible, cost-effective techniques. Dalvi et al. (2004) has reported that, due to the increase in demand, the world nickel production from laterites is expected to increase every year from the current level of production. In recent years, investigations of the use of low-grade ores, spent catalysts, clays, etc., have intensified to meet the market demand and also due to a shortage of high-grade nickel bearing ores (Al-Mansi and Abdel, 2002; Baba et al., 2009; Ismail et al., 2011)."

One of the largest mining shows in the world is set take place April 15-18 in Santiago, Chile. Expomin 2008 is expected to attract more than 60,000 professionals from around the world who are involved in all aspects of the mining industry. Expomin has become an important place for mining leaders to meet, organizers said, ?with great expectations for the development of new business in international markets.? This is the 10th Expomin. The event, held every two years, is expected to at-tract exhibitors from more than 25 countries, representing nearly 1,000 companies and more than 3,000 brands related to the mining industry, organizers said. Most all of the world?s largest equipment manufacturers and suppliers ? surface and underground ? will be represented. The importance of the event to the Chilean and international mining industry can be seen by the increase in size of the exhibition ? 13 percent more surface space in 2008, compared with the 2006 Expomin. The exhibit will be broken down into four pavilions, covering 34,054 m2 (355,570 sq ft). An outdoor area for the large mining equipment will cover 16,120 m2 (173,520 sq ft).

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. In many ways, conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. Like arteries in the human body, they continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from vital on-going operations. And like arteries, when the conveyors are running with less than maximum efficiency and productivity, it spells serious trouble for the operation's overall health. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses are created in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance, and the cost of the replacement of prematurely worn equipment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization; as a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down and with it employee morale.

Bituminous coal dust was repeatedly placed into one lung lobe of anesthetized Macaca nemestrina monkeys using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Radiographs taken at 15 day intervals showed a focal radiographic density after 90 days time when a total of 1 gram of dust had been instilled. The radiographic density progressed slightly in size until 12 months by which time 3 grams of dust had been instilled and the animals were euthanized. At necropsy, the only significant gross lesion detected was the focal black pulmonary lesion located at the dust instillation site. Histologically, the lesion was composed of coal dust laden macrophages located primarily within interstitial tissue and interspersed with a slight amount of reticulum and connective tissue fibers. The distribution of coal dust was limited to the instillation site in the right caudal lung lobe based on radiographic, gross and histologic examination. Bronchoalveolar lavage of both right and left caudal lung lobes was performed 8 times during the 12 month long experiments without significant complications. More macrophages were found in lavage fluid from the right lung than the left, and most macrophages from right lung contained coal dust particles. Based upon a limited physical examination and complete blood count at 15 day intervals the animals remained normal during the experiment. We conclude that the primate lung's response to focal experimental bituminous coal dust resulted in a marked focal increase in pulmonary alveolar macrophages, which can be recovered regularly in high numbers by bronchoalveolar lavage. The model described has significant potential for investigating the pathogenesis of various respirable dust-induced pneumoconioses, for evaluation of new therapeutic approaches, and for refining experimental and clinical diagnostic applications of bronchoalveolar lavage. Increased use of continuous miners and roadheaders in the underground coal mining industry in South Africa has led to improved productivity and efficiency of operations. Of major concern, however, is the increased amount of airborne dust generated during mining. Dust is a health hazard in terms of respiratory diseases, can impede productivity and is the major contributor to the potential of underground explosions. The concern of the South African coal mining industry with regard to the underground dust problem has led to the establishment of a Dust Control Section in the Coal Mining Division of COMRO. In the field of dust suppression system evaluation and design, collaborative work has been undertaken by COMRO and FLOSEP. This paper gives a review of the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in evaluating and improving environmental conditions in continuous miner and roadheader sections. A brief history of the development of the CFD model as well as a discussion of a typical application is included.

The recent heightening of environmental issues has forced more and more mining operations to focus on developing new methods to control dust problems encountered at their concentrate dryers, stock piles, tailings ponds and during the loading, transportation and unloading of their products. The development of dust control agents requires a quick reliable and most of all accurate method to evaluate the performance and to optimize the formulation of these products in the laboratory, thus avoiding expensive field trial evaluations. This paper gives an overview of the industry requirements for specialty dust control agents, application techniques and current laboratory evaluation procedures. The paper will also outline the development of a unique dust suppression testing apparatus called the "Dust Box, which is used to evaluate chemical dust suppressants at the laboratory level. Laboratory results from two test programs on different substrates are presented in the paper.

In the Western Coal Region, successful reclamation of surface-mined areas includes the protection of groundwater sources. To accomplish this, a complete understanding of the geohydrology of the affected area is imperative. Successful mine design also calls for careful attention to geohydrology. Because the Western Coal Region is semi-arid land used mainly for farming and grazing, groundwater is a particularly sensitive topic. It is especially sensitive where the lignite scheduled for mining is itself the aquifer supplying the farms and ranches. Such is the case throughout much of the Western Coal Region, particularly where there are no near-surface sand and gravel aquifers that are commonly found in the glaciated portions of the Region. Just as mining can adversely affect groundwater supply, so can groundwater adversely affect mining. Mine flooding and highwall instability are examples of this. But, mine operators must realize that procedures they use to remedy geohydrologically-related mining problems can have a dramatic effect upon ground- water conditions in areas adjacent to the mine. A logical precaution is to require the acquisition of complete baseline data prior to making the first cut. We recommend that the mining plan not only incorporate the reclamation plan, but that they be developed as one plan.

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

This paper deals with the effect of various bit geometric parameters on failure characteristics of rock material. Improvement of rock cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has been an interesting research topic for the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was utilized to study these parameters in the laboratory. Improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn wide spread attention over the years. Research shows that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was utilized in this study while bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Air borne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for the each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in static case to dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined in order to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.
