The subject of strata control in mining can be approached from both static or loading concepts or from dynamic or impulsive loading concepts. The fracture process itself appears to be primarily a dynamic process as is the gross creation of fractures through the use of impact, stress wave passage or in more general terms, the use of explosives. This paper presents experimental results which indicate that the understanding of the fracture behavior of rock that has been, established in the open literature is not always appropriate. In particular, the results of this experimental program have shown very interesting differences between the formation of fractures in rock and the formation of fractures in other materials such as metals and plastics which are often used as models for rock behavior studies Fracture patterns and causes of dynamic fracturing in various rock and artificial materials are presented.

In any operating mine, especially in precious metals operations, immediate improvements in profitability m readily achievable through more effective grade control. Just as the oil industry has come to recognize that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in existing oil fields yields a higher return on investment than exploring for new oil, so too must the mining industry recognize the benefits of enhanced metal recovery (EMR). Current grade control practices are generally dismal. The very word "control" suggests a willingness to make the best of a bad situation -- as in "damage control" or "disease control" -- and a failure to perceive the opportunities for improved profit. While damage and disease can merely be controlled, success and improved profit can be engineered. This paper presents one approach to enhanced metal recovery. It shows how existing methods can be used to address the issue of ore/waste discrimination. The following sections outline the problem, describe the current state of the practice of grade control, propose an alternative approach and. illustrate the application of the proposed alternative to actual blasthole data from an operating gold mine.

To Japan, which is scarce in natural resources, limestone is the only mineral resource comparatively rich in ore reserves and having broadly recognized outstanding quality. Distribution of the limestone deposits extends from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu and Okinawa in the south, and the deposits are located in a manner of framework formation of the Islands of Japan. Studies of the geological ages of these ore deposits reveals that almost all of the main ore deposits west of Kanto Area belong to the Carboniferous Period - Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era. Also in the east of Kanto Area, deposits belonging to the Paleozoic Era constitute the main part, although recently there are increasing examples of reclassifying the geological age of the deposits heretofore considered as Paleozoic Era to the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era by the recent discoveries of the fossils of conodont, etc. Large ore deposits and main ore deposit groups are given in the Figure 1, which shows that the deposits are roughly found well distributed throughout the country.

Reserve estimation is a process that commences with sampling and culminates in the issuance of a reserve statement. The tin, gold and diamonds that occur as marine placers on the continental shelf are low grade with very erratic mineral distributions. Sampling, using a variety of special equipment, determines the extent and grade of the mineralization. The sample size is important, especially for diamonds. Together with the sampling density, it determines the accuracy of the grade estimate. Bulk sampling is a confirmatory process. The choice of mining equipment, either new or developed from onshore activities, dictates the unit costs, the cutoff grades and the selectivity of extraction. Thus, the size of the blocks that comprise the mining plan and the reserves are determined. A variety of estimation methods of different reliability are available, with the most sophisticated being kriging. Dilution and losses during mining must be taken into account in estimation, and a grade-volume curve should be constructed. Diamond deposit estimation also involves an extra variable, the dollar value of the stones. During and after mining, essential feedback on the accuracy of un estimation may be given by the RIE factor and by a mineral balance. Reserve estimates are required for several reasons and may be subject to public disclosure. The use of the correct definitions is, therefore, important.

Diesel powered vehicles have made underground mines more efficient, but with the advent of DPM regulations, in most cases, extra ventilation and/or engine emissions control technology will be required. Using fuel cell powered vehicles will not need these measures to be taken. Nine US underground mines of varying production rates and mining methods were studied to determine possible ventilation reductions if their diesel fleets were replaced with identical fuel cell powered vehicles. Factors that might limit ventilation reductions, such as heat and the effects on other pollutants were determined for each mine. The ventilation cost savings and other benefits of fuel cell vehicles show that when they become commercially available they have the potential of being viable alternatives to diesel vehicles.

The Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, commenced operations in 1876. As is the case with old, deep, continuously developing mines, a ventilation improvement is periodically required to maintain acceptable underground environmental conditions. Recent historical improvements at Homestake include a 5.2m diameter air shaft driven in the 1960's and a 2.1 MWR (580 ton) chilled water plant installed in 1978. By 1983, it became apparent that yet another ventilation upgrade would be needed to keep pace with accelerated development in the deepest mining sections. A study was therefore undertaken to project ventilation requirements for the next ten years and to select the method(s) most suitable to meet those requirements. The study called for a two-phase approach in which air flow and air conditioning were carefully balanced. Phase I, the installation of a new 2240 kW surface fan and several underground circuit changes, was completed in 1986. This paper describes Phase 11: the planning, design, installation and initial performance of the air-conditioning portion of the upgrade.

Mr. C. A. Hollingsworth introduced commercial column flotation to the Florida Phosphate Industry in 1976, with a six feet diameter prototype cell at the Tenoroc Mine. More than two-dozen column cells have been installed in phosphate beneficiation plants since then. The increased interest in column cells for phosphate flotation, and their potential use in new plant construction, prompted the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research to fund programs to investigate various aspects of column flotation. This report describes a test program, conducted by JACOBS at CF Industries Hardee Complex II, as part of a comprehensive research program awarded to the University of Florida by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The 1.5 feet diameter test column was operated with plant process water and plant reagentized flotation feed. Several variables considered for column cells design and operation were tested. Feed specific capacity, air superficial velocity, and the length to diameter ratio of the column were the variables that influenced phosphate recovery. Concentrate phosphate grade was influenced by concentrate superficial velocity and feed specific capacity.

In the early days of minimal environmental protection awareness and unreasoning economy development pressures, little attention was paid to growing environmental concerns in Fuxin colliery, especially the air pollution problem due to the long term mining activities. In order to determine air quality concentration levels, a new technique for synthetic assessment of ambient air quality by using the extension of matter-element method is proposed in this paper. The air pollutants data such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Total Suspended Particulates (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10), and dustfall collected at four different air quality monitoring stations located in four districts of Fuxin colliery is used. The results obtained indicate that TSP, PM10, dustfall and SO2 are the predominant pollutants. Other pollutants such as CO and NOx are also detected in Fuxin colliery. The air pollution comes mainly from industrial emissions, mining activities and the abandoned gangue stockpiles. Compared to those applied to other mathematical assessment methods, it is demonstrated that the extension of matter-element model is quite appropriate for air quality assessment.

Rico is a small town in an old zinc mining district in a mountain valley of southeastern Colorado. Mine waste rock and mill “tailings” remained after over 100 years of mining in the area, leaving associated surface water and groundwater impacts. Atlantic Richfield Company is proposing an innovative approach, which uses lime precipitation and wetland ponds (semi-natural system, also called treatment lagoon in a wetland setting) to treat adit water in the Rico area. Besides using a non-conventional treatment approach, a non-conventional (non-Superfund) regulatory/administrative approach is being proposed. This paper will focus on the water treatment issues and solutions, as well as describing the innovative “watershed” regulatory process.

Natural cold seepages are characterized as rapid upward transports of methane from deeper parts of geological structures to the seafloor. Thermogenic and/or biogenic methane generated in deep sediments moves up to seafloor, and major part of methane is consumed in anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) and hydrogen sulfide is created in anaerobic sulfate reduction by consortium of microorganisms. Then the hydrogen sulfide is utilized by chemosynthetic communities near the seafloor, such as Acharax, Calyptogena, Bathymodiolus, and the mat-forming bacteria Beggiatoa (Fig. 1). When the supply of methane is large or rapid, remaining methane escapes from seafloor, and it is aerobically oxidized in seawater. A mass balance ecosystem model of chemosynthetic community around natural cold seepages in sediment layer and on seafloor has been created and improved by the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2005; Takeuchi et al., 2007). The model is constructed from 3 main processes as schematically shown in Fig. 2: (1) Methane supply process; (2) Ecosystem process; (3) Water column process. The part of chemosynthetic communities is in the ecosystem process. A numerical model CANDI (Carbon And Nutrient Diagenesis) was developed by Boudreau (1996) to simulate the biogeochemical processes such as organic matter, oxidant, nutrient, bi-product, and pH diagenesis in aquatic surface sediments. Then, the improved version named C. CANDI was developed (Luff and Wallmann, 2003; Luff et al., 2004). The authors created the same type carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model with calcium carbonate formation like C. CANDI (Yamazaki et al., 2005), and have added the sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes (Takeuchi et al., 2007). The sulfur oxidizing and immobilization processes are connected with the carbon and nutrient diagenesis process model.

So that you will not have been misled entirely we will devote our considerations to a far more important art and if I may, I should like to begin by quoting Vincent Van Gogh. According to a literal translation the artist in describing one of his famous paintings said "these peasants are eating their potatoes with those very hands that dug them from the earth' and put them in the dish". Vincent Van Gogh may not have realized at that time, that he could likewise have been describing what is probably one of the oldest of all arts - the art of Material Handling - an art that man with the aid of science has tried to improve since the beginning of time.

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

Underground voids present a unique geotechnical engineering challenge. This paper will address materials and transportation mediums that are typically used for backfilling underground voids with native material. After reviewing traditional backfill and transportation methods, this paper will explore the advancing technology of foam transportation and the advantages of using this technology for transporting fill materials into underground voids to backfill them with Liquid-Sand. The paper will also review the benefits that Liquid-Sand brings to these applications and highlight specific case studies in which foam transportation has proven effective and provided cost-effective, environmental benefits.

This paper presents results of field monitoring and finite element studies to analyze and improve a room-and-pillar retreat mining system. Fie1 d instrumentation was utilized to monitor pi11ar load changes, roof to floor convergence and differential roof strata movement as retreat mining progressed and to determine in-situ horizontal stresses. A two-dimensional finite element model depicting strata behavior at this mine was developed and used to analyze existing and alternate improved mining geometries. The results showed excellent correlation between fie1 d observed and model predicted behavior. Some of the recommended changes in mining geometry based on the study were incorporated in the mining system.

istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. This paper presents an analysis of the heat transfer process between the mine ventilation air and the frozen rockmass. The heat transfer model takes into account not only by the mutual change in air and rockmass temperatures, but also by the phase change of ice-water- ice. Based on the analysis presented here it is concluded that the mine thermal regime can be regulated by having the air enter the mine through mined-out excavations or development airways.

With the recent demand for increased coal production there has been a corresponding increase in the horsepower of the shearing machines. The resultant increase in the machine haulage pull has heightened the incident of haulage chain breakage resulting in machine downtime, but more seriously the danger to face personnel. This paper discusses the application of chainless haulage to longwall mining and describes the systems currently available.
