This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. It should be possible to use an oxygen probe to follow iron removal during converting, if local equilibrium is established between iron in the matte and the iron oxides in the fayalitic slag. The oxygen activity is expected to increase strongly as the iron content of the matte decreases (and the iron activity in the matte drops) while the iron oxide activity in the slag remains constant. To test this idea, oxygen activities were measured in synthetic mattes (made up of mixture of Cu2S, FeS and Ni3S2) when in contact with silica saturated SiO2-FeO slags, and silica and (initially) magnetite saturated SiO2-FeO-Fe3O4slags. The measurements were performed on laboratory scale at 1250°C, using an oxygen probe consisting of a stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Fe/FeO reference, and containing the sample in a silica crucible. Electrical contact to the matte was by means of a platinum wire. The measured oxygen activity was sensitive to the iron content of the matte, and insensitive to the composition of the gas atmosphere over the melt. The measured oxygen activity was generally close to that predicted by Fact Sage calculations. This indicates that such oxygen activity measurements could be useful to monitor iron removal during converting of nickel-copper-iron mattes.

Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.

The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women?s employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

The difficulty in their classification has arisen from their distribution over a very wide area.

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

Key variables in heap leaching include permeability, mechanical stability and mass transport. All of these properties can be manipulated by agglomerating and curing the ore before stacking it into heaps. The chemical and structural evolution of the agglomerates during curing is key to improving agglomerate properties and, ultimately, heap performance. It is possible to image the internal structure of agglomerates using SEM/EDX (e.g. QEMSCAN or MLA), although these methods are destructive and do not represent the 3D structure of the agglomerates. A non-destructive alternative is to image the agglomerates using X-ray Microtomography (XMT). Not only does this provide 3D information, it also allows the same samples to be repeatedly scanned, allowing the time evolution of the agglomerate structure and chemical composition to be tracked. In this paper we compared the behaviour of ores agglomerated using a combination of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate with ones in which chloride ions are added to the recipe, since chloride leaching is gaining in popularity as a chemical alternative to bioleaching for sulphide ores. We tracked the curing process beyond the typical time scales to see the impact that this has on both the agglomerate structure and the subsequent leaching behaviour. "Although oxygen is widely employed as the oxidant of choice in gold leaching by cyanide, its low aqueous solubility presents some drawbacks in practical application; hydrogen peroxide has therefore been considered as a possible alternative. The aim of this investigation was to study the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, which generates an oxidizing intermediate species, and to understand its effect on cyanide destruction. Operating conditions that facilitated the effective decomposition of hydrogen peroxide were established by varying the pH and catalyst type and concentration. The oxidizing intermediate, detected using an indirect technique, was found to be the hydroxyl radical (OH?). OH? is commonly generated in acidic solutions, but this work demonstrated that it is also produced at the alkaline pH values necessary for cyanide gold leaching. The effects of free and complexed iron and copper catalysts on the oxidation and consumption of hydrogen peroxide and cyanide were also investigated. It was shown that the cyano complexes of Fe(II) and Cu(I) are also effective as decomposition catalysts. Hydrogen peroxide concentrations above 0.01 M decreased the free cyanide concentration, which was attributed to the probable formation of the cyanate anion (CNO-). Although cyanide consumption increased due to its oxidation in the presence of OH?, excessive cyanide consumption in the presence of copper was attributed primarily to its complexation by the unstable copper(I) cyanide species. Rate constants for the decompositions of H2O2 and cyanide by ferrocyanide and copper cyanide were calculated; the latter was identified as being a better catalyst. "The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. Sustained growth in demand for platinum group metals has resulted in an unfettered increase in new projects undertaken by the platinum producers. These projects are outsourced to various degrees. The argument of this paper is that both the client?s project manager and the consultant?s project manager are essential elements in the successful execution of a project. Their roles are not only different but also complementary, and are defined in the paper. Data gained from considerable experience in the South African corporate mining environment underpins the opinions expressed in the paper. Furthermore, an extensive literary search was undertaken to determine trends in related industries outside the South African context. Throughout the argument it is emphasized that project philosophy emanates from a systems view and must be treated as an overarching whole. The elements of project management become meaningless unless they are connected to one another and integrated into a cohesive unit. Advancing the knowledge field of project management is of critical importance to mining investors. There is no doubt that a key determinant of the sustainability of mining business is closely related to the efficiency of all-inclusive project management. From pre-investment and feasibility studies, implementation and execution, to ramping-up to full production, scientific project management has a critical role to play. Guidelines for the pursuance of this ideal are proposed. The introduction contextualizes the subject matter in an overview of the evolution of mine management in South Africa and abroad. Then, brief insight is given into the philosophy of project management. This exposition is confined to the predispositions, presuppositions and defining characteristics of project management. The core of the paper looks at the roles of the client?s project manager in relation to the consultant?s project manager. This section is underpinned by practical experience gained by the author on numerous mining projects. A view is taken of the future of project management in the mining industry. The conclusion summarizes the argument and aligns project management trends in the mining industry.

Tunnel 99’, the Swedish National Road Administration´s (SNRA) general technical specification for road tunnels requires that the load bearing system must be designed to withstand specified design explosion loads. This paper presents the results of an SNRA study to provide a perspective of design analyses tailored to comply with the new requirement. The paper provides an example of a design analysis for assumed tunnel conditions using a numerical model. Dynamic predictions of potential damage to the rock mass and ground support system (rock bolts and shotcrete) from the specified explosion loads are presented including the nonlinear response of the shotcrete. “Tunnel 99”, qui fixe les règles de l’Administration nationale suédoise des Routes (Vägverket) concernant la conception et la construction des tunnels routiers, requiert entre autres que la structure porteuse soit capable de résister à certaines contraintes spécifiques résultant d’explosions. Cette étude présente les résultats d’une étude effectuée par Vägverket en vue d’obtenir une perspective d’analyses de conception spécialement élaborées pour se conformer aux nouvelles règles. Il contient un exemple d’analyse en fonction de conditions déterminées, basée sur un modèle numérique. Des prévisions de’études dynamiques de dommages potentiels subis par la masse rocheuse et les systèmes de soutènement (boulons d’ancrage et béton projeté) du fait des contraintes libérées par la force d’explosion spécifiée sont également présentées, y compris dans le cas d’une réaction non linéaire du revêtement en béton. “Tunnel 99” - die Vorschriften für Strassentunnel der Nationalen Schwedischen Behörde für Straßenwesen - (Vägverket) - fordern vom Tragsystem eine Auslegung in der Form, dass es spezifischen Explosionsbelastungen standhält. Dieser Artikel präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Studie der Behörde, um einen Ausblick über konstruktive Auslegungen zu geben, die geeignet sind, die neuen Vorschriften zu erfüllen. Der Artikel zeigt ein Beispiel einer konstruktive Auslegung für eine angenommene Tunnelsituation mit Hilfe eines numerischen Modells. Voraussagen unter Beachtung der vollständigen dynamischen Berechnung zu potentiellen Schädigungen des Gebirges und des Ausbaus (Anker und Spritzbetonauskleidung) durch die spezifizierten Explosionsbelastungen, einschließlich des nichtlinearen Verhaltens der Spritzbetonauskleidung, werden gezeigt.

Monitoring open-pit mine road conditions has become very critical nowadays. There are several benefits to in conducting research on this field such as opportunity to improve truck’s speed which directly influences truck’s productivity. This research aims to provide a semi real-time, and sensors-based automatic road damage detector that predicts the road quality through road damage exact location tracing, road damages auto-classification, and real-time instruction in the form of work order format to mining road maintenance, and repair authorities through mobile apps and maintenance unit’s in-cabin display. It will also provide the maintenance/repair activity performance evaluation via integrated dashboards. The artificial neural network algorithm is applied during the process of data training regarding classifying road damages and severities which resulted in a valid model. The road damage classification model has a precision level of 80.5% in predicting whether the road is damaged or not. Using this approach, we are expecting to visualise a road quality map of all active roads on mine site.

The flotation plant tailings at Kamoa Copper Mine concentrator were found to contain a high proportion of extremely fine particles. The potential issues with settling these fine solids were resolved by the use of a poly-di-allyl-di-methyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) coagulant, Flobead DB 45 VHM, in conjunction with a standard anionic polyacrylamide flocculant. This paper outlines some of the issues encountered and how they were resolved at the Kamoa concentrator. The potential to use this process and technology at other sites is also considered

Weakening rocks by taking advantage of microwave-induced microcracks is a promising solution for comminution processes. This paper investigates the effects of microwave treatment of the rock/or samples in single and multi-mode cavities. Based on the experimental results of using a 2.45 GHz microwave generator, the performance of different cavity setups and their impact on the energy effectiveness of the microwave irradiation was examined. Physical interpretations were drawn from multiple experiments with a relatively wide range of power rates and exposure times. Both basalt and kimberlite samples were used in experiments, and their results were systematically compared. For single-mode cavity tests, a microwave applicator waveguide antenna was placed at different distances from the samples to evaluate the effects of sample positioning on microwave heating, both numerically and experimentally. Eventually, cavity performance was assessed by using calorimetric test results, and strength decay was documented based on the spallation of the samples. It was found that the singlemode cavity setup has unique properties that can significantly improve the electromagnetic heating and therefore, strength degradation process. Let xi be the value of the ith sample and µw the unknown average value of the block. We can estimate µw from the average value of all the samples. Let µw be the estimator of µw.
