"The consolidation of nano-sized composite materials presents a challenge using conventional hot pressing methods. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology has shown great promise in the successful sintering of nanoreinforced composite materials. This qualitative review seeks to impart knowledge gathered, and progress made over the years on the consolidation of nanocomposite materials using SPS technology. The review is aimed at introducing this technology to the South African science and engineering community. Emphasis is on improving the mechanical properties of structural ceramic nanocomposite materials, which over the years have shown great promise in a wide range of applications, including transport, energy, mining, and the environment. Although success has been achieved within the laboratory for research purposes, there are still great opportunities to commercialize the technology for the production of larger components with more complex shapes.IntroductionSince the pioneering work of Niihara and Nakahira (1991) over a decade ago there have been extensive attempts to harness the potential of nanostructural metals, ceramics, and composites in a number of applications (Niihara and Nakahira, 1991; Selaho et al., 1997; Sekino and Niihara, 1995; Khalil, 2012; Aalund, 2008). It is generally realized that reducing the grain size of materials to nanoscale offers a significant improvement in properties. Attempts to synthesize nanostructured compacts by conventional sintering methods have not succeeded owing to the uncontrollable high rates of grain growth driven by long dwelling times at the sintering temperatures and large powder surface areas (Sergueeva et al., 2009; Gua, Khora, and Chieng, 2004; Tang et al., 2009). Following the development of spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology, it is now possible to process nanocrystalline materials with controlled grain growth. "There are numerous factors that affect open stope stability and often result in falls of ground. These falls of ground can be attributed to factors such as beam failure due to a larger than normal roof area (hydraulic radius too large), adverse ground conditions, seismicity, the stress-strain environment, absence of support, and poor drill-and-blast practices. The effect of time on the stability of open stopes is sometimes underestimated and is relatively unknown, especially on Target Mine. Actual data was collected from open stopes at Target and analysed to show the effect of time on open stope stability. The benefits of this analysis will include improved understanding of time-dependent failure, which can assist in reducing dilution and the risk of sterilization of future mining blocks. IntroductionTarget Mine is situated adjacent to the town of Allanridge, some 20 km from Welkom in South Africa’s Free State Province, and is the most northerly mine in the Welkom Goldfields area (Figure 1). The mine consists of a single surface shaft system with a sub-shaft (Target 1C shaft) and a decline. Ownership was attained by Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited in May 2004 (Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, 2010). Before discussing the selection of open stopes for the back-analyses, a brief explanation of open stoping as practiced at Target Mine will be given. The orebody is some 180 m in thickness and 270 m wide and comprises multiple reefs overlying one another. The 180 m thick reef package is termed the Eldorado Reefs, as shown in Figure 2. The Eldorado Reefs suboutcrop against the Dreyerskuil Reefs, as shown in Figure 3. The dip of the reef varies from as low as 10° in the west to 75° in the east.Compared with most Australian and Canadian open stoping mining operations, Target Mine is unique. In most Australian and Canadian mining operations the hangingwall and footwall of the open stopes comprise waste rock, and the orebody dips relatively steeply. Due to the depth of Target Mine, some 2300 m to 2500 m below surface, a destress slot (Figure 4) is mined to create an artificial, shallow mining environment whereby the field stress is managed and kept at values of around 60 MPa. The destress slot comprises a narrow tabular stope with an average width of 1.5 m, and is mined on the Dreyerskuil Reefs.At Target Mine the hangingwall, sidewalls, and footwall of the open stopes all comprise reef of different grades, except for the EA1, where the EB footwall is waste rock. If a stope, for example, is mined alongside an existing old stope, the western sidewall of this stope will consist of backfill. The general mining direction of open stopes is from the lowest position of the reef on the west, progressing up towards the east as shown in Figure 5."

Drying, calcination, prereduction, and smelting are the main steps in conventional crude ferronickel production. Industrially, these steps are conducted using the rotary kiln-electric arc furnace (RKEF) process. In this paper, calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from the Central Anatolia region are investigated. The extent of elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles was studied by experiments conducted at various temperatures in the 250?800°C range. Phase changes were examined using X-ray diffractometry. For the particle size used in the study, 300°C was determined to be almost sufficient for complete transformation of goethite to haematite, and 700°C was required for effective elimination of all volatiles in the ore.

Due to the modernisation of mines, traditional training methods may be supplemented to support the upskilling of supervisors in mines. A project was initiated by the SAMERDI SATCAP programme to demonstrate the “art of possibility” through a modern training methodology. Two exemplar digital supervisory leadership development modules for underground gold and platinum-group metal conventional and modernising mines, were developed for potential uptake by the mining industry. These exemplar modules were exhibited on a digital platform, towards leading and driving mining modernisation. The research adopted a mixed method approach that included a literature review, a review of an existing supervisory leadership development programme, data gathering, a pilot study, and stakeholder validation workshops. The research supported the development of exemplar digitised modules. The two digitised modules were showcased to the industry for potential adoption. Training slides, a facilitator guide, and a training video were developed for ease of use by industry. The training modules are generic and not specific to a particular mine. They may be used by multi-commodity mines, including gold and platinum-group metals, as ‘stand-alone’ modules. They are customisable, through consultation with relevant service providers for specific working environments. The findings indicated that both the traditional classroom training and the new digitised online learning solution offer advantages for supervisory leadership development. Digital learning is not a new concept for supervisors at mines and modern training methods are well-supported by supervisors in the industry. A ‘modernised’ training solution may consider a ‘blended’ learning approach that combines traditional training with digital methods.

Smith in presenting his paper was that the planning aid outlined in the preprint was neither sophisticated nor complicated. However, it was a system which worked and was a very real way in which the computer was being used to assist miners, in particular, who at the present moment have very little experience in the use of computers.Mr Smith apologised for the fact that the editors of the paper had eliminated all reference to 'time'. This was very unfortunate because the essence of the system was that it saved time, which was one of the main points made in the paper.The operations being planned by this means cover the Rokana orebody which is a stratiform body mined by open stoping.The planner has to decide how much ore to mine from each base in each time period of his plan, that is, from three to four months hence to a year ahead. Normal procedure is for the planner to have discussions with the underground manager on some of the information he requires. The sort of information needed is (i) tramming limits for each face, (ii) extraction and grade factors, (iii) the present status of mining operations so that the planner knows where to start the new plan, and, (iv) details of any other mining consider¬ations that need to be incorporated in the plan.The objective at this point is to produce an initial plan for discussion purposes. All the information required comes from one sheet per stops and shows, inter alia, the stope identifier, the length along strike, the ore tonnage, the copper and cobalt grades and, finally, the extraction and grade factors.The program itself, among many other things, checks the data for validity, compatibility, completeness and credibility and prints error messages accordingly. Output from this system is in the form of a summary of production from each face, as well as giving the figures of ore reserve depletion. This summary indicates which slopes are to be mined in this time period, the original survey grades (copper and cobalt), the estimated production grades, how much is to be mined from each stope and the copper and cobalt production accordingly."

Refractory gold-containing concentrates usually contain gold enclosed in sulphides as well as in rock-forming minerals. Another difficulty is that gold often occurs as very fine inclusions of several micrometres, and even smaller than 1 micrometre, or can be part of the mineral composition at the structure level. Processing of such concentrates is a challenge. Ultrafine grinding and further oxidation are applied for gold liberation. The paper deals with the results from the study of gold deportment using Qemscan, and atmospheric oxidation testwork involving Albion Process™ on a gold-containing concentrate with a high content of refractory gold in sulphides and gangue minerals. Albion process testing was performed at Institute TOMS with the participation of Glencore Technology Pty Ltd (Australia). Additionally, conventional cyanidation testwork was carried out for the concentrate processing. As an alternative technology of gold liberation, oxidising roasting with arsenic stabilisation was used. The results from the study make it possible to assess the efficiency of the above-mentioned methods of gold liberation, and applicability of Albion technology to recover gold from the refractory concentrate. The leaching kinetics of cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) in sodium-hydroxide-digested non-magnetic coal fly ash using acetic acid were investigated. The variables analysed were pH, solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L), and temperature. The results show that cerium and yttrium's maximum recovery was 57.33% and 58.36%, respectively, under leaching temperature of 90°C for Ce and 60°C for Y at pH of 1,74 and 10 g/mL solid-liquid ratio in 240 minutes. Increasing the leaching time to more than 120 minutes did not significantly improve the results. After the magnetic separation process, the ICP-OES analysis shows a slight increase in the concentration of cerium and yttrium on nonmagnetic components. The XRD and ICP-OES analysis for the sample before and after silicate digestion shows that 40% silicate was dissolved. The calculation of apparent activation energies of leaching using the Arrhenius law for the leaching of cerium and yttrium gives 22.72 kJ/mol and 35.84 kJ/mol, respectively. The kinetic leaching model of cerium and yttrium all fit Dickinson's new shrinking core model. The calculation results show that the leaching reaction is controlled by combining interface transfer and diffusion across the product layer.

This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

From the point of view of the environmental impact created, dimension stone mining is a relatively benign industry. There are no emissions besides those of the diesel powered earthmoving equipment utilised in its extraction and a small amount of blasting gases. Contamination of water resources is only likely in the event of petrochemical spillages from storage facilities and equipment, and these can largely be either prevented or cleaned up effectively. The major environmental impacts are of a visual nature, while in sensitive areas, habitat destruction and the destruction of archaeological heritage may become significant impacts. The dimension stone industry has grown at an average rate of over 7% per annum since 1986, and is forecast to continue growing at this rate for the foreseeable future. The cumulative environmental impact of the industry will thus become more significant over time. This paper discusses the environmental impacts of dimension stone mining and recommends effective means for dealing with the practical aspects of reclamation and mine closure in dimension stone mining within the context of environmentally responsible business practices. The discussion focuses mainly on the operations of the Finstone Group in Southern Africa, which are considered to be world leaders in the application of environmental management within the dimension stone mining industry, although reference is also made to other situations which the authors have encountered at dimension stone quarries around the world.

JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

Abstract: In this paper both continuous and discontinuous modelling are utilised in order to analyze the stability of the Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. The large span cavern (62 m) was built for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, and is a unique case study because of the large amount of available input data, through a comprehensive pre-investigation, stress and deformation monitoring program before, during and after the excavation. Phase2, a two-dimensional non-linear finite element program, and the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) are used as representative tools for continuous and discontinuous modelling, respectively. The analysis results are compared and discussed taking the reliability of the models, time-consumption and costs into consideration. Some guidelines for the total modelling process, from field measurements to final results, are also presented. Zusammenfassung: In diesem Artikel werden sowohl kontinuierlich als auch diskontinuierlich Modellierung verwendet, um die Stabilität, der in den Berg gebauten Olympiahalle in Gjøvik zu analysieren. Die Olympiahalle wurde 1994 zu den Olympische Spielen in Lillehammer errichtet. Ihr Dach erstreckt sich über eine Breite von zweiundsechzig Meter. Für den Bau wurden umfangreiche Daten durch Voruntersuchungen, und Überwachung von Gebirgsspannungen und Deformationen bevor, während und nach Exkavation eingesammelt. Auf Grund dieser großen Datenmenge stellt die Olympiahalle ein herausragendes Beispiel für den Bau ähnlicher Projekte dar. Für die kontinuierlichen Modellierungen wurde „Phase2“, ein zwei-dimensionales, nicht lineares „endlich Element“ Rechnerprogramm angewandt. Die diskontinuierlichen Modellierungen erstellte man mit Hilfe von der „Diskontinuierliche Deformations Analyse“ (DDA). Die Analysenergebnisse sind mit Rücksicht auf die Zuverlässigkeit der Modelle, Zeitverbrauch und Kosten verglichen und diskutiert worden. Im Artikel werden Richtlinien für den Modellierungsprozess von Dateneinsammlung bis Schlussfolgerung gegeben. Résumé: Dans cet article la modélisation continue et discontinue sont utilisés pour analyser la stabilité de Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. Cette caverne de grande portée (62 m) a été construite pour les Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver de 1994 à Lillehammer, et est une étude de cas unique grâce à la grande quantité de données disponibles, de par un programme de pré-investigation compréhensive, monitorage des contraintes et déformations avant, pendant et après l'excavation. Phase2, un code d’éléments finis non linéaire à deux dimensions, et l’Analyse en Déformations Discontinues (DDA) sont utilisés comme outils représentatifs de la modélisation continue et discontinue, respectivement. Les résultats d'analyses sont comparés et sont discutés, prenant en compte la fiabilité des modèles, la consommation en temps de calcul et les coûts. Quelques indications pour le procédé total de modélisation, des mesures sur place aux résultats finaux, sont aussi présentées.

In metal mines, comminution is commonly used to liberate minerals for subsequent mineral concentration processes, such as flotation, magnetic separation and gravity separation. However, ores are aggregates of valuable minerals and their disseminated gangue minerals, and these minerals exhibit diverse comminution behaviours. In carbonate-bearing iron ores, hematite, siderite, and quartz are the predominant minerals, of which hematite is the objective recoverable mineral. In this regard, the present study aimed to identify the imperfections in siderite minerals by X-ray computed tomography (XCT), and thus quantitatively characterise their size and shape in terms of Feret diameter and aspect ratio, as well as other parameters. XCT images indicated the protogenetic ubiquity of pores <5 μm in diameter and cracks of 7-8 μm inside siderite particles. In the ground product of artificially mixed siderite and hematite, siderite particles were smaller than hematite particles. Siderite particles had a larger surface area and greater surface roughness than hematite particles of the same volume, which was attributable to the intrinsic holes and cracks in siderite particles. This study provides an insight into the relationship between the inherent imperfections of minerals and their comminution properties. Flyrock remains a significant threat to the health and safety of mine employees and integrity of infrastructure, as well as to the safety of the neighbouring communities and their property. This investigation was motivated by the general lack of fundamental research and mathematically quantifiable data in the literature regarding the relationship between blast design parameters and their impact on flyrock. The focus was to develop a concept that can be used to mathematically quantify the trajectory of flyrock resulting from a blast, which can be used for future research. The ultimate goal for this technique, once it has been fully developed, is to: ➤ Enable mining operations to generate a database with accurate historical flyrock measurements resulting from their blasting operations ➤ Allow research teams to conduct scientific investigations into flyrock and the impact of various blast design parameters ➤ Generate point-cloud data to visualize blasts and flyrock in a virtual reality environment for training and education purposes. This paper summarizes a conceptual technique and preliminary fieldwork that was carried out to determine the technique’s feasibility and motivate further development. The results show conclusively that a modified photogrammetric technique is capable of capturing flyrock data for further processing and analysis. The data acquisition procedure can, at this point, be used to meet the first aim of the project, namely to gather a field database of historical flyrock generation. Further development of the technique is ongoing and it is envisioned that the scientific-based technique will provide a method whereby future flyrock studies will be comparable and that assumptions will be limited.

The incorporation of individual cooling in a compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus by E. SHVARTZ, M.Sc. (U.C.L.A.), Ph.D. (U.S.C.) (Visitor) and N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow) A conventional compressed-oxygen breathing apparatus, which did not include provisions for dehumidification of the inspired air at high environmental temperatures, was tested at these temperatures with and without conductive cooling in the form of 2 kg of pre-frozen ice placed inside the breathing bag of the apparatus. The pre-frozen ice provided conductive cooling of the soda lime and of the chest and abdomen of the subject, who performed moderate work at 50,1 "c. Without cooling, the subject was exhausted after 35 minutes because of a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of 46"c. With cooling, the subject finished 2 hours of work. This was possible by keeping the soda lime at a relatively Iow temperature, which resulted in a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of only 42 °C after 2 hours, and by conductive cooling of the chest, which resulted in the maintenance of a relatively Iow heart rate and rectal temperature.

Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, non-sinusoidal oscillation enhances the ability to control waveform and meets different oscillation requirements by adding an independent parameter, which is the key technology for high-efficiency continuous casting. A new waveform of mould non-sinusoidal oscillation is proposed in this paper, that is, a velocity waveform that is composed only of straight lines and parabolas, which not only has good dynamic characteristics, but also further enhances the feature of non-sinusoidal oscillation. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, the negative strip time is reduced by 15.9%, the maximum negative strip velocity difference is increased by 38.3%, and the maximum positive strip velocity difference is decreased by 27.8%. The formulas of oscillation process parameters can be clearly deduced, and the isoplethic curves of oscillation process parameters when multi-parameter simultaneously changes are drawn. The negative strip time decreases as the modification ratio, frequency, and casting speed increase, but increases as stroke increases. In order to maintain the stability of negative strip time, an oscillation synchronous control model for optimising oscillation basic parameters was developed. Through practical application, the mean oscillation mark depths decreased by 10.1 μm and the flux consumption is increased from 0.37 kg/t to 0.45 kg/t in the non-sinusoidal oscillation model, which meets the requirements of normal production.

"A computer system for the design of open pits to mine stratiform orebodies has been developed for use at Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Ltd. The particular requirements of such a system, for example, the accuracy of representation of geological detail and the ability to follow footwalls, arc described in this paper, together with the methods that have been adopted to satisfy them.A modified version of the Open Pit Design Program of Rio Tinto Zinc Consultants, Ltd. is incorporated in the system and the geological data are converted into a form usable by the computer by means of a pencil follower. Some of the uses which have been made of the system are described, with reference to the long- and medium-term planning of the Nchanga Open Pit, the major producing pit at Chingola Division."

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Underground observations in a coal mine have indicated failure oft he immediate roof above the bords. Careful observations and photographic recording of occurrences of these roof failures, termed ?roof guttering?, have been made. The occurrence of guttering results directly in roof instability, and indirectly, due to the interaction of the guttering with natural planes of weaknesses in the immediate roof rock. In this paper, relevant observations of roof guttering, possible mechanisms of formation of roof gutters, laboratory testing for determination of material strength and deformation properties, and numerical analyses to explain underground observations are described. Mapping of roof failures showed that these took place mainly towards the centre of the roadways. Roof guttering was observed often to occur violently and with little warning. Occurrence of roof guttering has a negative impact on production?some panels are abandoned, production times are increased and safety of workers is compromised. The numerical stress analyses showed that, although none of the constitutive behaviour criteria used predicted the observed underground failures correctly, the extension strain criterion gave the best agreement.

SYNOPSIS The corrosion characteristics of a new steel, 14Cr, which is a modification of the well-known 3CR12, in aqueous sulphate solution were studied through polarization diagrams and a computer analysis based on the polarization¬resistance technique. It was found that the corrosion rate of 14Cr steel is independent of pH for pH values above 6, but, below a pH value of 4, the corrosion rate increases sharply with decreasing pH. In air-saturated solutions of neutral and mildly alkaline pH, the corrosion rate is approximately 60 µm per year. The 14Cr steel shows a twentyfold improvement in corrosion resistance over that of 3CR12 in sulphate solutions at pH 2,0. This is considered to be due to the beneficial effect of its higher chromium and nickel contents.
