This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models. "SynopsisCo-pyrolysis of four biomass samples (hardwood chip, softwood chip, pinewood chip, and sugarcane bagasse) with an inertinite-rich medium rank C South African coal was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the chars prepared using a heating rate of 10°C/min up to 1100°C in a nitrogen atmosphere were used to compare the properties of the biomass and the coal chars. Similar gross calorific values (28.5–29.1 MJ/kg) for the woody biomass-coal blended chars were observed, which were slightly higher than that of the coal char sample (26.5 MJ/kg). CO2 surface areas of the chars of the woody biomass samples (328.1–329.4 m2/g) and of the blends (238.5–271.5 m2/g) were higher than that of the coal char sample (94.2 m2/g). Thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermal analyses (DTG), and calculated weighted averaged TG curves indicated that the influence of the biomass on the pyrolysis rate of the coal is small and vice versa. The CO2-producing reactions of the coal were slightly enhanced during co-pyrolysis.IntroductionCoal utilization has led to rising concerns about adverse impacts on the environment (global warming) caused by toxic gases (H2S, SOx, NOx, and CO2) and remaining waste. Biomass is considered to be CO2-neutral with regard to the greenhouse gas balance, and is regarded as a renewable source that assists in reducing CO2 emissions when compared with coal (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Biomass currently makes up approximately 14% of the world’s energy sources (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Coal combustion and gasification are prominent processes in South Africa (in producing synthesis gas and energy) due to the abundance of coal in the country. Some of South Africa’s coal resources are, however, high in ash content and also are inertinite-rich, which renders them more difficult to use industrially than vitrinite-rich low-ash coal (Jeffrey, 2005; Strydom et al., 2011). There is a need to investigate the properties and behaviour of the inertinite-rich high-ash South African coals and especially their interaction with local biomass sources. The gasification process occurs through various stages, of which pyrolysis of the char residue forms an integral part (Bunt and Waanders, 2009). Currently, particular interest is shown in the co-utilization of coal and biomass to produce synthesis gas via the gasification process (Usón et al., 2010; McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Investigating the co-pyrolysis of the South African coal and local biomass material is thus the first step in evaluating the use of local biomass sources for co-gasification purposes."

Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. Previous work has shown that sulphide self-heating occurs in three distinct stages referred to as Stage A, Stage B and Stage C. In this paper the focus is on the transition from Stage A to Stage B, which occurs at ca. 100OC. Background literature hints that the transition corresponds to the transformation of the rhombic form of elemental sulphur to the more reactive monoclinic form that occurs at 96OC. A test apparatus is modified for adiabatic heating to track the transition. The results support this transformation of sulphur as being key to the transition, and the transition temperature is thus modified to 96OC. Variations in a sample’s response under adiabatic conditions are observed and possible reasons are discussed. Testing in adiabatic mode provides new insights into the sulphide self-heating process that complement the test designed to identify propensity to self-heat. The pump is the heart of most industrial and mining plants, providing the energy to separate valuable minerals from process feed. The actual effect of the pump, both in terms of production costs and overall process efficiency, is often assumed or misunderstood by engineers due to insufficient pump performance data. Pump performance can be understood and corrected, where required, through continuous performance monitoring, leading to dramatic improvements in both pump life cycle costs and system efficiencies. The performance of every pumping application is subject to variation and the main contributing factors are as follows: ?Unavoidable deviations from pump supplier curves ?Pump wear ?Pump curve derating factors for slurry pumping ?System curve variation ?Deviation from basic principles of centrifugal pump operation. These are discussed in detail through case studies and the author?s personal experiences. This paper shows ways to minimize the effect of these variations, thereby reducing performance loss and preventing damage to the pump. The paper discusses the benefits of efficient pump operation, the requirements of pump performance monitoring, and its practical application to pump operation in the slurry and water environments. The cost of remedial actions is explored and compared against the savings in both power and plant reliability, resulting in a reduced life cycle cost of the pump.

The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

Worker participation in equipment development can result in improved user acceptance and product quality. This paper focuses on worker engagement in equipment development processes in the South African minerals sector. Qualitative data was gathered during interviews with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industry experts. A lack of inclusion in equipment design from workers from all organizational levels in mines was reported. Meanwhile, the historical context and workplace culture of the mining industry (including leadership, trust, training, performance, and remuneration factors) were evident barriers to the implementation of new technology. Worker engagement processes should include securing management commitment, creating multidisciplinary teams, effective facilitation, shared understanding of needs, training and development, and iterative design. Human-centred design approaches and independent platforms for engagement on equipment design requirements are recommended.

"Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. Creatine was used as a lixiviant for gold dissolution from gold ore. The effects of creatine concentration, temperature, leach time, and pH were examined for their influence on extent of gold dissolution. The results show that at a temperature of 75°C and pH 11.5, gold dissolution increased from 51% to 88% on increasing creatine concentration from 25 to 50 g/t. Further increase in creatine concentration showed a negative effect on the gold dissolution. Gold dissolution increased from 47% to 87% by increasing the temperature from 25°C to 55°C, and from 61% to 89% by increasing pH from 10 to 11.5. Under the optimum conditions of solids’ content of 30%, pH 11.5, creatine concentration of 100 g/t, temperature of 75°C, and hydrogen peroxide addition of 2%, about 90% of the gold could be dissolved from the ore after 24 h. A comparison between creatine and cyanide leaching showed that 90% gold dissolution was achieved at a cyanide concentration of 300 g/t, which is three times higher than the creatine concentration under optimal conditions.

Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. "The effect of two refining slags (A: 1.0–1.8 CaO/Al2O3 ratio, 11–20 wt% SiO2; and B: 1.0–1.2 CaO/SiO2 ratio, 25–35 wt% Al2O3) on the inclusion morphology of a carbon structural steel (Q235B) was studied by controlling the balance between the steel and the refining slag at 1600ºC in a Si–Mo resistance laboratory furnace. The results showed that most of the inclusions in the molten steel balanced with slag A were formed by a lowmelting CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system with a total oxygen content (T[O]) being fixed at 6–13 ppm. The inclusions in liquid steel balanced with the slag B were mostly formed by the CaO–MnO–Al2O3–SiO2 system, with T[O] controlled to 19–26 ppm. The overall size of the inclusions under balance conditions was higher in the steel reacted with the slag B than that reacted with slag A, with the latter showing more inclusions smaller than 3 um. In order to generate a large number of spherical CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 inclusions smaller than 3 ??m while decreasing the T[O] in the resulting steel, the composition of slag A should be used. This composition allowed improving the cleanliness of the slab, and is also advantageous for the castability of the molten steel. IntroductionThe sample used in this study was a typical carbon steel manufactured by CQ Steel. The galvanized, tinned, and plastic composite steel plates made of the original plates are used extensively for decorative panels, general dust pipes, drums, instrument cases, switchboxes, and train cars, among other uses. The target control composition is shown in Table I. The S and P contents are usually fixed during production below 0.020 and 0.025 wt%, respectively, with the aim of reducing longitudinal cracks on the slab surface."

Chromium green is an essential metal with various applications in the paints, construction, electronics, and aerospace industries. The main source of chromium green is the carbo-thermic reduction of chromite ores, however, chromite ores are being heavily depleted on a global scale, hence the need to find alternative or secondary sources for the chromium. In order to meet the global demand for chromium there is a need to implement principles of the sustainable circular economy to keep chromium within the material loop. Ferrochrome slag and stainless steel slags are secondary resources that are potential sources of chromium. In this work, recovery of chromium from ferrochrome slag was investigated. The ferrochrome slag was alkaline leached using sodium hydroxide- sodium hypochlorite solution to reduce the use of potent reagents that have a potential negative environmental impact. The leachate produced by oxidative alkaline leaching of ferrochrome slag contained hexavalent chromium, which was used to recover the extracted chromium through a two-stage process involving reduction and precipitation. Reduction of hexavalent Cr to trivalent Cr was investigated using anhydrous FeSO4 at concentrations of 5 g/L, 10 g/L, and 15 g/L. Precipitation was conducted by dosing the reduced leach solution with 1 M sodium hydroxide at dosages of 5 ml/L, 10 ml/L, and 15 ml/L. The experiments were designed using the Taguchi (L9) orthogonal array and analysed according to the ANOVA, general linear model. The optimized conditions for the reduction step were ferrous sulfate dosage of 5 g/L with a pH of 12, and for the precipitation step, 1 M sodium hydroxide at a dosage of 15 ml/L with a setting time of 90 minutes and pH of 7. Physical changes were observed during the two-step chromium recovery, with solution changing from a yellowish colour to dark green colour indicating completion of the reaction. The chromium recovery was found to be 93.3%.

The CSIR-Ti process employs lithiothermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride feedstock to produce titanium sponge. The product is therefore contaminated by a range of lithium and chloride species. In this study we examine the effects of particle size, temperature, and HCl concentration as input leaching variables on the removal of chlorides from the crude titanium sponge. A review of the aqueous chloride chemistry of Li and Ti provided initial conditions for leaching of impurity species from the sponge. Experimental results confirm that the effectiveness of leaching and removal of dissolved impurities from the sponge are dependent on leaching kinetics, which are influenced by temperature, particle size, and morphology. Of the variables tested, reaction temperature had the strongest influence on the oxygen content of the leached product. The HCl lixiviant concentration had a negligible effect under the conditions tested. Leaching of crude titanium sponge (−10 mm size fraction after crushing) at 14°C in either 1 M or 0.032 M HCl yielded a titanium sponge product that met the ASTM standard specification for commercially pure Grade 1 titanium, i.e., oxygen content < 0.18 mass% and chloride content < 0.15 mass%.

Unstable rock failure or rock bursting is one of the most dangerous problems in deep hard rock mines. This type of failure, that occurs uncontrollably, is associated with a significant release of strain energy from the surrounding rock. In this study, the numerical simulation of unstable rock failure was carried out using the three-dimensional explicit Lagranian finite-volume finite difference method to identify the onset and location of unstable failure events in the model. On this basis, a numerical simulation of mine pillars with width-to-height ratios of 0.5, 2 and 3 was performed. A criterion was developed, based on the calculation of the elastic strain energy, to determine the prone areas for the initiation of rockburst in the models. The results of this study showed that, in softer loading systems, due to large amounts of stored elastic strain energy, an unstable equilibrium is established, which leads to the rapid transfer of strain energy to the rock in the form of violent failure. It was also found that the unstable failure starts at the corners and free surface of the model. The new criterion developed in this study may help predict the occurrence of rockbursts in slender pillars and the design of pillars to control human and financial losses caused by this phenomenon.

This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

Massive deposits of rock salt are mined in the Salt Range area of Pakistan. The main export products of rock salt include salt lamps, blocks, and tiles, while local consumption includes the chemical industry and domestic use. The profitable production of salt for value addition depends on the quality, size, and shape of the block. Salt processing for value addition is easier when very few cracks are present in the blocks. The current salt mining practice involves drilling and blasting, which introduces undesired fractures in the material. This paper focuses on the extraction of rock salt blocks by applying conventional cuboidshaped block mining methods used in quarries. The techniques include wedges and feathers, expansion chemicals, and blasting with low-yield explosives. Experimental work involved both laboratory-scale and in-situ field testing. Laboratory experiments assisted with the determination of splitting force, loaddeformation curves, and other rock mechanics parameters. Regression analysis proposes a relationship for the estimation of radial strain from the load in the case of the wedges and feathers method. The splitting force obtained from the laboratory tests was used to confirm the accuracy of the already published empirical relationship. The results of the laboratory as well as in-situ tests showed that the wedges and feathers technique is the most suitable method for mining rock salt blocks of the desired size, shape, while minimizing cracking.
