High-purity lanthanum metal was prepared by electrolysis of La003 in a LaF3-LiF-BaF2 bath at 950° C. The requisite bath temperature for the deposition of molten metal was maintained by supplying the heat as current directly to the electrodes. A current efficiency of about 60 percent was obtained. The lanthanum nodules contained carbon and oxygen as major impurities. The total impurity content was from about 0.1 to 0.2 percent.

In a process being investigated by the Bureau of Mines for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, calcined kaolinitic clay is leached with hydrochloric acid. Iron impurity in the clay is coleached and is removed in a solvent extraction step prior to crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which is subsequently thermally decomposed to alumina. The FeCI3-HCl stripping liquor from the solvent extraction step is unsuitable for discharging to the environment; furthermore, economics requires recovery of the contained chloride values. In the present research, it was shown that the stripping liquor can be reacted with calcined clay to yield AlC13 in solution, plus precipitated iron oxides, residual silica, and unreacted excess clay as mixed solids. For the recovery of the AICl3 solution, the slurry could be separated or returned to the clay-HCI process stream at the solids washing step that follows primary HCI leaching of the clay. For the range 20° to 99° C, the time (t) (103 sec) required to react the waste liquor with excess clay, for essentially complete iron precipitation, depends on the absolute temperature (T) chosen, according to the expression t = e[(9.000/T) -23.5J. (1) Alumina was tried as a reagent alternative to clay but was not very effective, even under pressure and at high temperatures.

"INTRODUCTION This report is another of the series on the effect of drouth and low water on the pollution of streams by coalmine drainage. A previous report3 dealt with work on Bennett Branch of Sinnanahoning Creek, Pa. This report deals with the results obtained during a similar study of Black Lick Creek, Two Lick Creek, and Yellow Creek. All of these belong to the same drainage system. Two Lick Creek is a tributary to Black Lick Creek, and in turn Yellow Creek is a tributary to Two Lick Creek, as shown in Figure 1.Black Lick Creek was of such a volume that a seasonal investigation was not entirely feasible. Yellow Creek was found to have mines only near the mouth, except a few of status unknown to the writer at the extreme head-waters, and the stream was also more or less inaccessible for regular and frequent sampling. The investment involved in any communication system represents a considerable sum. Even though it is desirable that the system work properly each and every time it is called into use, some failures are bound to occur. Most failures, however, and especially those that occur most frequently, are due to poor installation techniques. An extra hour spent at an installation site can save many maintenance trips and many frustrating hours of system troubleshooting. Typical faults likely to cause communication outrage are Pager phone systems Poor splices aggravated by corrosion. Strain relief not provided. Drip loop not provided. Incorrect branch connections. Overloading the circuit. Poor battery connections. Improper wire size or type. Lightning strikes. Improper placement of wire runs. Carrier phones Mounting transceiver near load resistors or other sources of heat. Tracks not electrically bonded. Cable abrasion due to poor mounting location. Disconnected battery. Poor mechanical installation. Each installation should be well planned. After an installation is completed, the technician should ask the question, "What can go wrong with this unit or line?" Remember the adage, "Whatever can go wrong, will." Preventive measures taken during installation will pay off in the long run. 6.2 Pager Phone Installation The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery-operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is usually two-wire, nonpolarized, and operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. 6.2.1 Mounting Pager phones are designed to be mounted on an upright support at the desired location. For convenience, the phone should be mounted 5 feet above the floor where there is no obstruction to using the handset or removing the cabinet front cover for servicing or battery replacement. In low-coal situations, a suitable height for installation should be selected convenient to the normal operator's position at the site selected. About 12 inches of free space on each side of the phone should be provided for cabinet access. The phone should be protected against direct exposure to dripping water and should not be allowed to rest in a puddle of water. The mounting location should be convenient to a work location and have a safe, unobstructed area for a worker to stand and use the phone. The phone must be in a location where the worker will not be in the path of moving vehicles or falling debris. Each telephone is normally well insulated, but it is still good practice to provide an insulating mat or dry planking for the user to stand on.

Bureau of Mines research on the production of phthalic anhydride by vapor phase oxidation of hydrocarbons began at Morgantown, W. Va., in October 1960. For these preliminary studies, a known solution containing naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene was used. In another series of tests, pure naphthalene was dissolved in different solvents. A series of investigations was conducted with the neutral oil fraction (210° to 270° C) of a low-temperature tar obtained from the Texas Power and Light Company's low-temperature carbonization unit. The neutral oil fraction was first dealkylated, and then the product was distilled into 210° to 250° C and 250° to 270° C fractions. These two fractions were then subjected to catalytic vapor phase oxidation. Although a number of catalysts was tested, most of the experiments were made using 9 percent vanadium pentoxide on inert alumina. The activity of this catalyst did not decrease after 162 hours at 1,030° F. Studies were conducted over a temperature range from 610° to 1,180° F. An operating temperature of 1,030° F yielded 47.50 percent of phthalic anhydride from a synthetic mixture of naphthalene and 1-methylnaphthalene. The highest yield (84.40 percent phthalic anhydride) was obtained with naphthalene dissolved in toluene and also with naphthalene dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone. With a 210° to 250° C fraction the highest yield of phthalic anhydride obtained was 12.32 percent at a temperature of 900° F, and, with a 250° to 270° C fraction, it was 15.80 percent at a temperature of 875° F.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coal beds in Washington County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 15 million tons of coal was produced in Washington County in 1956; 89.8 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines has estimated that 2,280 million tons of recoverable coal remained in beds 28 inches thick or more as of January 1, 1954.

"A knowledge of the carbon dioxide (002) content of the products of combustion, particularly from the boiler furnace, is very valuable. An instantaneous indication of the CO2 can be used as a useful guide to efficient burning. A permanent record over a. period of time gives a story to the management which tends to keep the operators more alert. Many instruments that indicate and record CO2 have appeared within the last fifteen years. More are about to appear. Although simple principles involving chemical, physical, or electrical qualities, are being used, there is at present a general feeling of uncertainty about such instruments in the boiler room any instruments are bought, run awhile, then lie idle indefinitely.Inquiries as to CO2 machines continually come to the Bureau of Mines from the general public, as well as from other branches of the Government. Some ten years ago a series of tests was made on certain instruments at that time on the market. The following test was made quite recently on four of the newer types, including one using an electrical principle. The four instruments were installed on one boiler each, according to the instructions of the makers, and the recommended routine attention was given them. The test was of a service nature duplicating the conditions under which the instruments ordinarily serve. The boiler that was available for this purpose was practically banked for some hours of the night. This caused the average CO2 for the entire twenty-four hours to be rather low, although it reached the higher ranges of the instruments during the day.Each day the charts were averaged and the results plotted to form the accompanying curve. The record of each instrument is shown by its particular mark, the dot, circle, cross and square being used in addition there is plotted for each day a rectangular area representing 1 % CO2 in height. The proper positions of this area was determined by means of the Crsat. Where the plotted point for an instrument falls within the rectangel its accuracy is within 1/2% CO2, which is considered satisfactory. Where it falls outside the rectangle, inaccuracy is indicated."

A method for concentration of the nickel-cobalt-bearing mineral, siegenite, from a table middling has been developed by the Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo. The table middling is composed of a complex series of sulfide minerals, occurring in mill operations in the southeast Missouri "lead belt." In these operations the siegenite is lost as a separate concentrate, being diverted to other products. The procedure also includes recovering commercial-grade concentrates of copper and lead. A low-grade zinc concentrate, a potential coproduct, was also made.

In an experimental study by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with National Lead Co., the roast-flotation process was found to be an effective means of upgrading certain cobalt-nickel stockpiles. The research was undertaken to determine whether the process could yield an enriched feed, with a minimum cobalt content of 6.0 percent, for the company refinery. The stockpiles (products of the company Fredericktown, Mo., milling operations) were essentially complex sulfides of cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron, 1 sample of which contained 2.84 percent Co and 3.57 percent Ni. After a controlled oxidizing roast at 400° C., laboratory flotation with conventional sulfhydric reagents yielded an enriched concentrate analyzing 9.22 percent Co and 11.43 percent Ni, with recoveries of 84.9 and 85.8 percent, respectively. These are typical laboratory data; other data indicated higher grades were possible but at reduced recoveries. A brief, continuous campaign verified the applicability of the process to the raw material in question but was not continued long enough to establish optimum conditions. As a consequence, the results of the large-scale tests did not equal those obtained in the laboratory but definitely confirm the beneficiation possible from the roast-flotation process.

In a Bureau of Mines study, unsteady, spherically symmetric, one-dimensional, compressible-flow (finite sound speed) equations were solved numerically for a spherical deflagration propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel with Mach numbers ranging from 0.2 to 0.7; trajectory histories agree with the infinite-sound-speed theory developed by Perlee, Fuller, and Saul (PFS). A preliminary result of this study shows that flames propagating with speeds greater than 20 pct the speed of sound in the unburned gas mixture generate a complex history of aerodynamic waves distributed throughout the spherical vessel. Although the average pressure and flame radius agree with those predicted by the PFS models, the aerodynamic waves have a pronounced effect on the flame velocity, differing appreciably from that predicted by the PFS model.

Heats of solution of calcium carbon-ate (calcite) and calcium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined by solution calorimetry. Combination of these two heats yields a value of 42.643±0.024 kcal/mole for the enthalpy of calcination of calcite at 298.15 K. Literature data on ?H°298.15 of calcination of calcite were reviewed and compared. Thermodynamic properties for the calcination process were calculated from 298.15 to 1,500 K using Gibbs energy functions. This research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as an effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of minerals technology, energy conservation, and environmental preservation.

Two problems perplex many coal-mine operators and employees. Is coal-mine dust harmful to breathe; and, if so, is it possible to keep the concentration below the danger point? The medical profession is not unanimous in its opinion of the danger of breathing bituminous-coal dust, but there appears to be ample and increasing evidence that coal-mine dust can be harmful if breathed in large enough doses for long periods. The question of controlling the dust at the point of formation is still unanswered in the minds of many in the mining industry. However, results of limited studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines in 9 bituminous-coal mines indicate that a full-shift average exposure of workers should not exceed about 20 million dust particles per cubic foot of air (m.p.p.c.f.) and that concentrations can be held within this limit without too much difficulty. Furthermore, these studies indicated that an exposure in the neighborhood of 40 m.p.p.c.f. should not be exceeded for an individual operation and that it is possible to hold within this ceiling.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) fracturing of strong strata above, or below, the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or ?shock? loads on the perimeter (roof, rib, floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in planning of deep coal mines since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers, and their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

A medium-frequency (MF) communication system has been built and has been tested in underground mines. It provides radio coverage to vehicles and personnel anywhere in the mine via parasitic coupling into existing mine conductors. The system consists of base stations, repeaters, and vehicular and personnel transceivers. Air-core antennas for vehicles and clamp-on antennas for base stations and repeaters were designed for maximum coupling efficiency using existing mine wiring. Personnel transceivers are of a unique vest design that features a low physical profile, good user comfort, and efficient antenna design. In-mine tests show impressive results. Range between rubber-tired vehicles and base stations is often measured in miles. With repeaters, greater range is possible.

Mineral production was of minor importance to the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a ranking world producer of any mineral commodity in 1980. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited, and reserves were sufficient to allow a significant increase in its use. A greater proportion of the domestic heat and electrical energy needs could be filled by increased production and distribution of natural gas. Also, the export of natural gas was feasible either by pipeline to India or in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Some nonmetallic minerals could be developed, as well as coal and peat, given sufficient capital investment. Bangladesh's strongly agricultural economy made fair progress in 1979.80.1 The major harvest of November-December 1979 turned out to be better than had been anticipated after an early drought left poor planting conditions. Secondary crops (harvested in February-March 1980 and June- July 1980) were excellent. There were prospects for a record harvest in fiscal year

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and small-scale, continuous tests of weathered mica-pegmatite ores from Randolph County, Ala., to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica concentrates by flotation. Two flotation methods were used in continuous tests for recovery of mica. One method utilized acid-cationic flotation for the recovery of coarse mica and alkaline-anionic-cationic flotation for recovering fine mica. This method yielded mica concentrates containing 98.6 percent mica with a recovery of 85.9 percent. The other method was based on the Bureau-developed alkaline-anionic-cationic method, and yielded concentrates containing 97.5 percent mica with a recovery of over 90 percent. In both methods, preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphreys spiral was employed to reject over half of the feed in a product virtually free of mica.

Techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of high-purity rare-earth metals and their alloys by electrolysis of the oxides in fluoride media are summarized. Cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, gadolinium, and yttrium metals, the mixture didymium, and specific alloys of these metals and samarium with iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt were prepared. Individual metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state on tungsten or molybdenum cathodes. Alloys were prepared by electrodepositing the rare-earth metal on a consumable cathode, at a temperature above the melting point of the eutectic formed between the rare-earth element and the cathode material. Cells were designed for electrowinning metal products in gram and pound quantities, and methods for continuous electrowinning of cerium and lanthanum were developed.

As part of an effort to establish processes that could be exploited in case of adverse changes in international chromium production and trading patterns, this study was sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (formerly the Federal Preparedness Agency) through the Bureau of Mines, to experimentally determine the feasibility of recovering chromium from critical scrap metals containing significant quantities of this element. Based on a conceptual pyrometallurgical chromium recovery flowsheet developed at Arthur D. Little, Inc., the experimental program described in this report demonstrated key process steps for the recovery of chromium as ferrochromium in a batch process. The process involves oxidation of chromium into a slag phase, subsequent separation of the slag phase from the remaining metal, followed by reduction of chromium from the slag phase to produce ferrochromium.

The Bureau of Mines started a continuing program to investigate and evaluate analytical techniques to assist governmental agencies to select simple, rapid, reliable methods for crude oil spill identification. Six crude oil samples were analyzed to evaluate gas-liquid chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, infrared spectoscopy, sulfur and nitrogren determinations, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Samples were studied from the following selected fields: El Morgan, Egypt; Duri, Indonesia; Minagish, Kuwait; Bachaquero, Venezuela; Gach Saran, Iran; and Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. These samples were chosen to represent high-production fields that are likely to be involved in oceanic transport. Over 50 years of Bureau of Mines analytical research on petroleum served as the basis for evaluation of the experimental results to determine which of the methods are effective techniques to identify crude oil spills. Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis, and sulfur-nitrogen determinations are recommended as the most useful of the techniques investigated.

Provide sound battery safety guidelines for mine workers who maintain mobile surface mining equipment. Approach Battery-related accidents account for about 5 percent of all nonfatal disabling injuries in coal and metal nonmetal surface mines. These accidents occur despite the fact that appropriate battery safety technology (maintenance-free batteries, cable removers, fault detectors, hot-jumping systems, etc.) exists. Mine operators are not always aware of the safety measures that could be taken because this safety information is widely scattered in numerous unrelated technical reports, vendor brochures, and journal articles. A literature search of these reports and a review of relevant industry standards, handbooks, and references on battery safety, followed by discussions with mining company and MSHA personnel, provided the Bureau of Mines with the background necessary to develop procedures for proper and safe battery usage. These procedures were condensed and written in nontechnical language to serve as guidelines in assuring battery safety during maintenance of mining equipment.
