The Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven has been used for studying coal expansion for some 20 years. During the period before 1940 emphasis was placed on studies of the mechanism of coal expansion and the effects of variations in operating conditions on the results. Since 1940 emphasis has shifted to a survey of the expansion properties of various coking coals. Because additional information concerning a number of unsolved problems in connection with the earlier studies appeared highly desirable, this investigation of the use of sole-heated ovens for studying coal expansion was undertaken. The principal findings, in order of their discussion in the text, may be summarized as follows. 1. Expansion results for binary blends of coking coals exhibit nonadditive behavior, both positive and negative deviations from additive behavior being noted, depending on the particular coals tested. Additive behavior can be achieved, however, either by charging the blend components in separate layers (which indicates that the observed phenomena are not characteristic of the particular expansion oven used) or by testing relatively coarse sizes of coal (which suggests that the effects of crushing on the expansion properties of coking coals may be even more complex than is generally recognized).

Single- and two-stage tests were made with 6-inch, coal-cleaning hydrocyclones to determine the effect of hydrocyclone geometry, operating conditions, and feed composition on performance. Most of the testing was conducted in an open-circuit pilot plant that had a maximum capacity of about 9 tons per hour. The coals used in the investigation had top sizes of 1/4 inch and 28 mesh. Considerable latitude was found in the range of geometry variables that could be used without affecting performance adversely, although a certain minimum ratio of overflow to underflow openings had to be maintained for best operation. Two-stage cleaning proved distinctly better than operation with a single hydrocyclone, because clean coal lost in the refuse product of the primary unit can be partly recovered in the secondary. There is an unusually great difference in the specific gravities at which the individual sizes of the feed are separated in the hydrocyclone. This militates against high efficiency because maximum yield occurs when all sizes are cleaned at the same specific gravity. The size composition of the feed and, more particularly, the size composition of the impurity have a greater influence on the efficiency attainable in the hydrocyclone than in most other types of fine-coal cleaners.

An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission. This paper reports determinations of heats of formation (from the oxides and elements) of crystalline cadmium metasilicate and crystalline lead meta-silicate by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results, in conjunction with known entropy values, yield free energies of formation. There are no earlier data of this type for cadmium metasilicate. The results of this investigation for lead metasilicate deviate from the literature values (which are less reliable) in the direction of increased thermodynamic stability. Both cadmium and lead metasilicate are much less thermodynamically stable with respect to their constituent oxides than are the corresponding compounds of the alkaline earth metals.

Steel liner plates, which are bolted together to form a shell, are commonly used to provide temporary protective linings in the tunneling industry to ensure the stability of the tunnel and safety of the workers until more permanent ground reinforcement can be installed. As the ground deforms to try and close the opening, the liner plate is radially stressed, and by deforming redistributes these loads back to the surrounding insitu earth. Grouting behind the plates is done to fill any voids and ensure uniform contact to the strata around the back of the plates. Another function of the liner plate in some applications is to act as a platform or structure for the mining machine to react against in order to develop the necessary forward thrust to be able to excavate the face. In this case, the liner plates are loaded axially as a horizontal column of bolted liner plate rings, creating a jacking force against the liner plate assembly. In general, the buckling strength of the plate sections determines the jacking force capacity. Historically, the jacking force capacity of tunnel liner plates has been theoretically determined by some simplistic equations developed from tests of single liner plates. Recently, full-scale tests on a complete circular section of bolted liner plate ring segments have been conducted in the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory using the unique Mine Roof Simulator to apply controlled loading in a manner that simulates the real world environment. Due to the unique size and capacity of the Mine Roof Simulator, these are believed to be the first full-scale tests conducted on the jacking force capability of tunnel liner plate rings. These tests indicate that the previously used theoretical equations tend to over predict the jacking force capacity of these tunnel liner plates. Unanticipated deformations in the field have been observed at loads below these theoretical design loads, therefore, a more accurate determination of the jacking force capability was needed. This report summarizes the full-scale test results, examines design parameters that impact the jacking force capability, and develops new mathematical models to improve the prediction of design loads.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and on the basis of the results obtained, to reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. This stepwise procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Data Preparation A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the variable "Width Ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. However, "dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that these varia¬bles would have numerical expression. The following variables were described in this manner. The Bureau of Mines investigated fumes generated by selected welding materials used in mines in order to help determine their relative hazard potential. The initial phases of the study have been completed. A welding-fume generation and collection apparatus was designed, assembled, and calibrated. Five brands of coated, AWS-type E308-16 stainless steel electrodes were tested. Total fume generation rates of 0.39 to 0.51 g/min were measured. Quantitative chemical analyses were conducted for all of the principal firms constituents. Two analytical schemes were used to determine levels of the Cr6+ and Cr3+ species contained in the welding fumes; comparable results were obtained. The Cr6+ was found to be the most hazardous constituent, leading to a maximum allowable total fume exposure of 1 mg/m3. Fume generation rates and fume constituent analyses will be derived for other groups of welding electrodes using similar procedures.

Reduce rockfall fatalities and injuries by using innovative blasting practices to reduce damage to the rock at the excavation limits with little or no increase in cost. The Problem Falls of highwall have been a leading cause of fatalities, injuries, and equipment damage in the surface mining industry. Although the number of highwall falls is not great, when such an incident does occur it is about 14 times more likely to be fatal or result in severe injury and damage to equipment than other types of surface mine accidents. Overbreak or damage to the rock from poor or improper blasting practices is a major factor contributing to rock falls. Presplitting or cushion blasting is the technique most often recommended for improved wall control. This type of blasting however, adds to drilling and blasting costs and is not universally accepted by the industry. Air gap presplitting techniques, also called air decks, are currently being used in some mines as a less costly alternative to conventional presplitting. Approach Blasting can cause highwall damage, but proper blasting techniques have been shown to reduce the magnitude of rockfall problems. In preventing rock falls, it is important to maintain the natural strength of the rock structure to the greatest extent possible. Improved blasting practices have three main advantages: 1) they are preventive rather than corrective in nature; 2) they are cost effective; and 3) they have a very low impact on the mining operation when properly implemented. New ways of evaluating highwall integrity, such as seismic refraction tomography, were investigated.

"Experience and experiment have goth shown that a cloud of coal-dust in air can be inflamed and an explosion developed only when a certain minimum concentration of the dust in air has been equaled or exceeded. Those who have had experience in the handling of coal know that dust is frequently present in the air and may be of sufficient density to obscure an ordinary electric light at a distance of 40 or 50 feet; yet flames may be, and times without number have been, introduced into such clouds, when no additional coal-dust has been stirred up, with no effect other than the burning of the dust particles which actually enter flame. Evidently the density of the dust cloud is insufficient to give self-supporting combustion.The minimum amount of dust in air required to give a spreading flame will vary with a number of factors such as the composition of the dust and its size. This amount in a unit space may be considered analogous to the lower limit of inflammability of fire damp (methane) in air, although the variation in limit of explosibility of gas is small even when conditions of the experiment are altered. In large-scale determinations of the lower limit of inflammability of coal-dust there is no certain method by which a sample of the dust cloud can be snatched and its density determined. It is necessary to produce the best possible dust cloud from a known weight of dust, in a known volume and assume - probably with considerable error - that the dust cloud is reasonably uniform. The dust cloud must be formed and the source of ignition applied to it simultaneously; this is generally accomplished by the use of blow-out shots of black blasting powder, dynamite, or similar explosive so prepared as to blow out like a cannon shot, or by a gas explosion. The more violence attending the source of ignition, the greater is the probability that all the dust is raised in a uniform cloud; and the greater the length or intensity of the flame, the greater are the chances of ignition. As a result one may obtain a variation in apparent minimum density with different sources of ignition. This difference is more apparent than real and must remain until devices for instantaneous sampling of dust clouds during explosions are perfected."

Three -dimensional boundary value problems are difficult to solve. Indeed, while the separation of the scalar wave equation can be effected in 11 different coordinate systems, an analytic solution requires that the boundaries, both external and internal, possess the same symmetry as the coordinate system. Numerical methods are thus of great importance for the solution of such problems; however, despite the availability of high-speed, large memory digital computers , the solution to a significant three -dimensional problem is by no means trivial. It is unfortunate that the results reported here by Jones are invalid. Jones discusses a model in which a three-dimensional island lies off a linear coastline where all the interfaces lie in the coordinate planes in a Cartesian system. A downward plane em wave polarized with the electric field parallel to the linear coastline, and two of the islands coast, is incident downward. This, of course, requires that the incident electric field is perpendicular to the other faces of the idealized Cartesian island. The significant equation used by Jones for his finite difference calculations is [ ] where n2 = sµ? . is the conductivity, µ=µo is the permeability of the appropriate medium, and w is the angular frequency of a Fourier component of the incident field. We see that the displacement current term is omitted, which is an excellent approximation for the parameters of interest in this model. In the similar equation for the y- component of the diffusion equation, the same considerations which we are about to discuss are equally valid. It can be seen from the equation that the field components are related and thus any errors introduced will be propagated into all three components. "SummaryAir velocity distribution surveys on four mechanized longwall faces are presented and discussed. Although there are discernible patterns in the velocity distribution, there are wide differences in distribution in the cases examined. This can be attributed to differences in mining and face geometry. An important factor is air leakage into the goaf.IntroductionOver the past two years several intensive air velocity surveys have been carried out in West Virginia coal mines as part of a programme aimed at understanding dust transport mechanisms on mechanized longwall faces. These are presented here and some of the patterns of velocity distribution are discussed.Ventilation survey methodologyThe air velocity vector consists of three mutually perpendicular subvectors; the vertical subvector is directed toward the roof, one of the horizontal subvectors is parallel to the coal face and the other pointing to the gob. The air velocity which was measured in this paper is the horizontal subvector parallel to the coal face.To record the velocity distributions at the longwall faces, the surveying stations and the surveying points were established as follows.(1) The first station usually was set at the third support from the headentry T-junction. Within the first few supports, the air coming from the intake airway encounters a sharp right-angle turn at the T-junction, and forms a turbulent region close to the coal face. The intake air in this region is also influenced by the motors that drive the face conveyer. But when the air reaches the different. But for the same face the number was the same. The main air-travelling area was divided into six to 12 equally sized sub-areas, and each surveying point was situated approximately at the centre of the sub-area.The velocity survey was carried out by two persons, one reading the meter and the other taking down the readings. A complete survey at one station took about 5-8 min. Usually, the dimension of the cross-sectional area was measured during that time.A third person used the smoke tubes to observe the following: (I) the air movement patterns at different locations; (2) the extent and the direction of the air leakage; and (3) the machines' influence on the main airflow. At the same time he observed and recorded the roof conditions and the compactness of the roof-caving in the gob."

Effective separation of rare-earth mixtures is obtained using hydrogen as a retaining ion at 200° F with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) eluant. Results obtained in Bureau of Mines bench-scale apparatus and large columns with hydrogen as a retaining ion closely parallel those obtained with copper as a retaining ion. The use of hydrogen as a retaining ion permits EDTA and water, collected before rare-earth breakthrough, to be recovered in a form that allows the material to be recycled without extensive processing. With the exception of yttrium and dysprosium, separation of rare-earth mixtures is improved and throughput is increased by elevated temperatures. Separation with 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid (DCTA) eluant increases markedly on increasing temperature from ambient to 250° F; however, on the basis of separation efficiency, DCTA does not compare favorably with EDTA.

Experiments were conducted to determine the optical scattering properties of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and various combustion aerosols from both flaming and smoldering combustion sources at discrete angles of 151 and 301 in the forward direction and at a light source wave length of 635 nm using a simple light scattering module. In addition to the scattering data, simultaneous measurements were made of the total aerosol mass concentration; light extinction at an average wave length of 546nm; and the response of a common bipolar ion chamber typical of residential smoke detectors modified to allow the aerosols to flow through the chamber. The results of these experiments indicate, for DPM and combustion aerosols, the intensities per unit mass concentration depend not only upon whether the aerosolis DPM or combustion aerosol but also upon the type of combustion aerosol. The results also indicate that the ion chamber responses are greatest for DPM, followed by the response to flaming combustion aerosols (FCA)and lowest for smoldering combustion aerosols (SCA). For light scattering, the greatest intensities are found for SCA, followed by the intensities from FCA, and lowest for DPM. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results to developed sign criteria for early warning fire sensor capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by the products produced from diesel engines. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.

Health surveillance efforts indicate that the development of lung disease and overexposure to respirable dust in underground coal mires continues to afflict mine worker. Results from the most recent round (1992 - 1996) of the Coal Worker's X-ray Surveillance Programs indicate that approximately 8% of the examined miners who had at least 25 years of mining experience were diagnosed with Coal Worker Pneumoconiosis (CWP) (category 1/0+). During the period between 1995-1999, mine operators and MSHA inspectors collected 9968 and 1365 dust samples respectively, from longwall designated occupation (DO) personnel. Analysis of these samples showed that 1970 (20%) of the mine operator samples and 25.8 (19%) of the MSHA samples5 exceeded the 2 mg/m3 dust standard. The continued development of CWP in coal mine workers and the magnitude of respirable dust over-exposures in longwall mining occupations illustrate the need for improved dust control technology on longwalls. Figure 1 illustrates the major longwall dust sources as determined in the early 1990's.4 This article describes the ongoing research to find ways to minimise shearer dust levels as a function of changes in dust control parameters, and research to determine the impact of high air velocities on shield dust entrainment.

APPENDIX A - PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT OF FLY ASH 1. Introduction Two types of pneumatic transport of fly ash are critical to the success of (1) Transport of fly ash from the fly ash truck to the entrance to the borehole. Depending on the surface topography, this may be horizontal, decential and ascential. (2) Vertical downflow of fly ash through the borehole. All fly ash trucks have limited pressure with which they can pump the fly ash. Thus, the pressure drop in the fly ash hose will define the maximum length for pumping and consequently the maximum distance that the fly ash truck can be parked from the auxiliary blower. The same relationships describe the flow of the dilute fly ash-air mixture produced by mixing with the auxiliary air from the blower and thus define the selection of the pipe diameter. These are im¬portant considerations in the proper selection of the location of the passages to be sealed and the type of surface preparation required. The flow characteristics of fly ash down the borehole determine the selection of the minimum borehole diameter and the blower pressure. This appendix presents theoretical analyses of these flow regimes and summarizes the limited experimental data obtained during the field tests at Grant Town, described in Section 8.4. The analysis for the borehole flow is presented first as it is of greater interest to the program. This is followed by a discussion of the horizontal flow.

The study of neutrinos?particles infinitesimally smaller than atoms?would be significantly advanced if a deep underground facility were available that would filter out unwanted cosmic radiation. Encouraging progress has been made in satisfying the criteria for such a facility with the selection of the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, by the National Underground Laboratory Committee as the recommended site for a National Underground Science Laboratory (NUSL). The Homestake Mine is America?s oldest and deepest underground mine, and its well-maintained infrastructure to depths of 2438 m below the surface makes the mine an excellent site for such a laboratory. The investigation reported here is an initial study of the stability of the first of the proposed chambers. A cylindrical room with a dome-shaped roof and floor was analyzed in three dimensions using the finite-difference program FLAC3D. The results were compared to recommended support requirements based on Barton?s Tunneling Quality Index, Q. Based on model results and observations from previous mining studies, large rooms with 50-m roof spans can be constructed and will remain stable at 2141 m below the surface in the Poorman Formation when the rock is reinforced with cable bolts. Construction may be possible at lower levels in the Yates Formation if more extensive laboratory strength tests confirm initial results.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the washability characteristics of 14 coalbed samples collected in Wyoming. Such data is needed to evaluate the quality of the coals of the West where most of our low-sulfur-content coal reserves are found. Of the 14 samples included in this report 13 had a total sulfur content of 1.1 percent or less. All of the samples contained low per¬centages of ash or could be readily washed to a desirable ash level with minimal loss of yield. The coals ranged in rank from high-volatile B bituminous to subbituminous C, although 10 of the samples were high-volatile C bituminous. The coalbeds varied in thickness from 4.5 to an unknown thickness greater than 67.5 feet.
