The Track Rock corundum mine was among the numerous corundum deposits investigated during the war by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop domestic reserves of that critical mineral. In the investigation of this property 562 feet of trenches were excavated and a l25-foot adit was reopened for the purpose of locating veins to of corundum which had been previously reported to occur in that locality. Only very minor amounts of corundum were disclosed in both the surface workings and the adit. The project was begun in May 1943 and completed in November 1943.

This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date. As the use of electricity becomes more and more general in mining opera- tions, interest in regulations governing its application becomes greater. During the past year the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines has made a study of State regulations now in force relating to the use of electricity in coal mines. Technical Paper 271, entitled "State Mining Laws on the Use of Electricity in and about Coal Mines", has been published as a result of this study. The present paper represents a compilation of all laws relating to accident prevention with respect to electrical circuits. This group of regulations is perhaps the most important of any that relate to safety in coal mines. Its importance is shown by reference to accident statistics in Bulletin 115, (Fay, A.H., Coal-Mine Fatalities in United States, 1870-1914, Bureau of Mines, 1916), which show that about 77 per cent of the fatalities due to electricity in and about coal mines were caused by direct or indirect contact with trolley or other power circuits. In actual number this means that of 710 men killed by electricity, 546 were killed by contact with electric wires. Undoubtedly, a large percentage of these accidents might have been prevented had the wires been properly guarded. The compilation follows:

"IntroductionIn part 1 of this paper, the results of the experimental work in a wind tunnel under controlled conditions were presented. To understand the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust under mine conditions, experiments were performed in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine of the US Bureau of Mines. The mine airway experiments were designed to study the variations of ambient concentrations along the length of an airway, and the deposition rates and deposition velocities in an airway cross section. Other objectives of the study were to investigate the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust with regard to air velocity and particle density, the size distribution of the airborne dust cloud as it travels in the airway, and the size distribution of the dust particles deposited along the airway. Other objectives of the study were to compare wind tunnel results with In-Mine results, whenever appropriate.Experimental ProcedureLocationA complete description of the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) can be found in the US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8911 (Mattes et al., 1983). This mine provides excellent facilities for dust experiments. The airway dimensions are similar to those of a coal mine airway. The mine has a drift (D Drift, see Figure 1) that extends almost 500 meters without interconnecting airways, stoppings, or bends. The D drift measures approximately 6m in width and 2,25m in height.The Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine· is ventilated by a variable speed, 75 kW (100 hp), 28,3 m3/s (60 000 cfm) blower fan installed on the top of the ventilation shaft. Air velocities of 1, 1,3 and 1,8 m/s, respectively, could be obtained in the D Drift. However, the temperature changes at the surface can cause small variations in air quantities and velocities underground. The low background dust level in the mine reduces the problem of sample contamination from other sources of dust. Extended periods of uninterrupted data collection can also be scheduled. Mine airway parameters which are important for the analysis include the dimensions of the airway and the ventilation data such as the air velocity, and the pressure loss in the drift. All these data were acquired during altimeter surveys which were conducted prior to each of the experiments."

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the positive ions and neutral species produced in glow discharges of gas streams containing 1.0 percent NO in helium, 29 percent dry air in helium, and 1.06 percent NO in N2, Mass spectrographic measurements were conducted for gas pressures from 2.3 to 10.0 torr and dc currents from 10 to 20 mAo Ion species observed included NO+, N2 +, O2 +, N+, and 0+ with lesser amounts of He+, He2+, and N02+. Variations in various ionic and neutral species with discharge duration were interpreted to be consistent with an electrically induced dissociation of NO to produce N2 and O2. No nitrogen oxides were observed to form in glow discharges of the helium-air mixture.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

"It has only been in recent years that the proper ventilation of metal mires has received serious consideration. Increasing temperature and humidity with greater depth in some of the larger mines of the West prevented the efficient operation of the mines and made the installation of mechanical ventilation systems necessary. Doors that interfere with tramming are generally needed to control properly the mechanically induced air currents and are one of the inherent disadvantages of the system. In fact the necessity for the use of doors in the main haulageways has discouraged the installation of mechanical ventilation in some metal mines.A number of mining companies in Arizona are using ventilation doors which can be opened and shut mechanically by the motorman without leaving his seat or stopping his train, end thus interfere very little with the transportation of the ore. The Copper Queen Branch of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation at Bisbee introduced these ventilation doors and adapted them from those in use in the company's coal mine at Dawson, New Mexico. Other mining companies have installed the same type of door and it is now being used in a number of districts in Arizona.The doors at the Calumet and Arizona mine in the Bisbee district are representative of those in use. The doors at this mine are substantially built of 2-inch lumber, are air tight, are well placed and have two openings or passageways. The main door, which is used for the motor trains, is 5 feet wide by 6 feet high and is opened by compressed air and closed by a counterweight. At the side of the motor door is the man door, which is 16 inches wide by 5 feet high and is opened and closed by hand."

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing the silica dust exposure of equipment operators at surface mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on enclosed cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimen­tally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use and wind velocity effects on cab penetra­tion (inside to outside cab concentration ratio). Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab penetration. Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.

The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

Under the present emergency every consumer should store as much coal as he can. Although there is no shortage of coal, there is likely to be a shortage of labor to mine excessive quantities in the fall, and railroads cannot be expected to deliver coal promptly on account of the need for transporting war materials. Some miners must join the armed forces, and those who are left may be unable to mine coal as rapidly as you will need it when winter comes. When the first cold days arrive, there may be a shortage of trucks to deliver coal. Deliveries may be planned in advance, and your turn might not come until it is too late.

The purpose of this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to design and construct a fluorescent X-ray spectrograph for dynamic rate studies of selective oxidation in molten metals and to establish basic principles for interpretation of data obtained by this method. An X-ray spectrograph was constructed in which the sample holder is a resistance wound furnace; it was operated up to 800° C. in oxidizing atmospheres. No difficulties were experienced with the cooling or heating systems nor with the protective layer of mica around the X-ray tube window, even though the oxidizing surface of the metal is only 0.5 inch from the X-ray tube window, Means are provided for heating under controlled atmospheres for selected time? temperature cycles.

Approach Two types of noise control packages have been developed, that can be readily fabricated and installed into bulldozers by mine personnel. How It Works Both of the noise control packages reduce the noise exposure of the operator by two techniques, blocking the noise paths or absorbing the sound before it reaches the operator. Both airborne noise paths and noise paths through the machine are blocked. One noise control package is designed for bulldozers having ROPS (Roll Over Protection System), but no cab. The Bureau of Mines evaluated short-delay coal mine detonators manu-factured by three domestic companies for electrostatic sensitivity, strength, and no-fire current level. Electrostatic sensitivity was studied in pin-to-pin and pin-to-case modes employing lO-kV potential. Strength of detonation was measured in the Bureau's underwater test fa-cility. No-fire current was measured using a constant-current power supply unit. Test procedures and experimental data are included.

"Oil-shale camps are peculiarly favored, in that before they are establishes it can be ascertained with a degree of certainty, that the life of the project is not limited. Unlike camps at metal mines, where the metal content of a given area is frequently an unknown quantity until after years of development, oil-shale camps should, from the outset, be planned and. built as permanent types of camps. Where this procedure is followed camps will be established which better serve the needs of the industry and the cost of their general care and upkeep will be less.Selection of camp or townsite.The site of the camp or town' whether on company property or not, should be selected with care. It should be separate if possible from the location of the plants of the company so as to be free from noise and fumes and so as to provide a change of environment for employees in going from their work to their homes.The principal features governing the site to be selected are as follows:Drainage. The general contour of the surrounding country should be such that drainage is away from the site. The camp or town should, if practical, be situated on higher ground than that in its immediate vicinity.Soil. The nature of the soil on which the camp or town is located may bear a decided relation to health. A porous, well underdrained top soil of at least four feet in depth insures dryness and facilities the placing of foundations and the laying of water mains and sewer pipes. Such a soil also is an advantage in growing trees, shrubs and grass plots, which are a decided adjunct to making the community attractive.Enviroment. The contiguous territory should afford no unwholesome sur¬roundings such as swamps Or accumulations of stagnant water.General Considerations. The water supply to be provided and the method of disposal of wastes influence to a certain extent the location of the camp or town-site. The means of supplying water, whether by gravity or by pupping, and the disposal of sewage, whether by outfall, system, sewage disposal system through septic tanks, broad irrigation or filter beds, or cesspools will govern the location of the site topographically in relation to source of water and point of disposal of sewage.* This article was prepared as part of the paper ""Use and Supply of Water for the Oil-Shale Industry"" by J. "A copper-palladium-gold-silver ore is being mined at Salt Chuck, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, from which a concentrate is produced that contains 40 to 50 per cent copper, and considerable amounts of palladium, gold and silver. There has been much difficulty in obtaining assays for palladium, gold and silver from the mine, smelter, sampler, and umpire that check within reasonable limits. While the results for copper content have not been unusual, the results for palladium have varied as much as 0c8 oz. on 3 oz. material, results for gold differed by 0.1 oz. on 1.6 oz. materials, and for a silver content of 7 oz., results differed by as much as 4.0 oz.The Bureau of Mines was requested to determine the causes of variation in the results of the different assayers, and to develop a satisfactory procedure for analyzing such ore.Three samples of concentrate were received for analysis, two small lots that had previously been assayed by the various laboratories, and one large sample. The large sample was dried and ground in a ball mill, put through a 150-mesh screen, and then returned to the ball mill for thorough mixing. The small samples were ground to pass a 150-mesh screen and then mixed on a mixing wheel.The large sample (No. 1) was analyzed by five different procedures, one of the small samples (No.2) by three procedures, and the other (No. 3) by two procedures (the two small samples being too small for further tests). The different procedures tried and the results obtained arc presented below. The samples of concentrate were from ore mimed and milled by the Alaska palladium Co. at Salt Chuck."

Develop improved blasting practices that can help to curb overbreak in highwalls at surface mines, thereby reducing the hazards of rock-falls to workers and equipment, The Problem The serious hazard in surface mining is the falling of rock from highwalls. Poor highwall stability is caused in part by geologic conditions, but often is aggravated by faulty blasting practices, where the explosive energy not only fractures the rock to be excavated, but also damages the rock that borders the excavation. This reduces the general stability of the hlghwall and increases the rockfall potential. The probability of injury to mine workers or damage to equipment associated with exposure to the highwall increases with the height of the highwall and the extent of its overbreakage. Most rockfalls occur in the first 15 days after a new highwall is exposed. This statistic is significant since most of the work below a highwall is done during this period. The area of greatest hazard is within 25 ft of the toe for rocks that fall vertically, and up to 90 ft from the toe for falling rocks that are deflected by the highwall during their descent, The workers most frequently involved in such accidents are dozer operators, ground laborers, and shovel operators or oilers.

The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

The Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive investigation of the old lead diggings in the Wisconsin portion of the Upper Mississippi lead-zinc field in September 1947 to determine whether enough lead was present in shallow deposits to justify exploitation by modern open-pit methods. Because of the large number of areas of surface diggings, it was necessary to limit the investigation to only a few representative areas. Initial studies, therefore, included test pitting and hand auger-drill sampling at two sites n Grant County and one site in Lafayette County to determine whether further extensive sampling in that area was warranted. Results indicated that certain portions of the area contained substantial amounts of lead and, zinc; accordingly, more detailed sampling was undertaken, and the results will be described in a later report. Another phase of the general investigation was drilling and test pitting at the Nigger Jim Lafayette County. This 10 the third of the series and summarizes the work on the White property to develop the western extension of the Big Dick ere body, where four churn-drill holes totaling 679 feet were drilled. Inclusion of the White property in the study was justified because old reports indicated (1) production of ore from mines in the vicinity disclosed a high ratio of lead to zinc, (2) ore was present in the west heading of the Big Dick mine when it closed, and the attitude of the Big Dick ore body was such that a vertical hole would encounter ore that might be present.

Introduction A wealth of information exists which deals with electrical grounding, both from a general viewpoint and from a specifically mine-oriented approach. Many parameters must be investigated in order to thoroughly cover all of the variables which govern the performance of electrical grounding systems. The emphasis of this work on open-pit practices re- presents a new development in the field of grounding research, and an exhaustive review of the relevant historical documentation is especially desirable. Grounding System Purposes What purposes are served by a grounding system? The answer is four-fold and may be summarized as follows. First, it must limit potential gradients between conducting materials in a given area (56). When a phase conductor comes into contact with a machine frame, current flows through the equipment, which tends to become elevated above ground by an amount equal to the voltage on the conductor. If a man were to touch the machine while he was simultaneously connected to ground in some manner, his body would also tend to become elevated in potential, possibly to a lethal extent. Thus, the grounding system should provide a low- resistance path for the fault current to return to the source. The maxi- mum potential to which a man could be exposed when touching a machine frame is equal to the voltage drop along the ground conductors inside the power cable, as shown in Figure 1 (54).
