One of the chief hazards in mining bituminous coal is the accumulation of coal dust in the mines . When coal dust is thrown into suspension , it can be ignited and exploded by electricity through short -circuiting of mining machinery and trolley wires , or by arcs and sparks . The Bureau of Mines has endeavored to assist the coal -mining industry in preventing disasters from this cause by urging that all bituminous -coal mines be rock -dusted . As it has been difficult to convince some mining men of the danger of ignition of coal dust and of the effectiveness of rock dusting in preventing widespread explosions , a small , portable , coal -dust - explosion gallery has been designed to demonstrate the explosibility of bituminouscoal dust . Such galleries are furnished to Bureau engineers , inspectors , and safety instructors to illustrate visually and impressively the Bureau's accident -prevention educational work on the causes and prevention of dust explosions in bituminous -coal mines .

This paper discusses the fact that US coal mining organisations are losing the knowledge they need in order to be able to respond to emergencies. The authors note that knowledge management provides a useful perspective from which to view the problem, but that the debate about what constitutes knowledge should be broadened to include a debate about what constitutes management. It is argued here that knowledge is actually shared knowing distributed across group members; that such knowledge can be managed by cultivating it; and that narrative is the medium through which this may be done. The paper then examines NIOSH research that has attempted to use such an alternative knowledge management approach to help potential mine emergency responders better deal with the predicaments they are likely to encounter on-site.

"Filter samplers are one of the simplest methods and, in some instances, one of the only methods that can be use to obtain samples of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Once collected, particles are normally analyzed directly on the filter by gravimetric, chemical or microscopic techniques. However, it is sometimes desirable to resuspend the particles in an airstream for analysis. This would be the case if the size distribution of the particles were to be measured using one of many particle sizing techniques such as inertial classifiers, optical particle counters or the TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer CAPS).A ·technique has been recently developed whereby one can resuspend particles from filter samples in an airstream. The technique has been used for the resuspension of coal dust from filters. The resuspended particles were then introduced into the APS. This development was necessary since an APS can not be taken directly into an underground coal mine. For this application, particle samples are collected on membrane filters in the underground mines. The mass concentration of the particles determined through gravimetric analysis. The particle size distribution was tl1en determined by resuspending the particles and passing them through a TSI Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). Excellent agreement has been obtained between the size distribution directly measured underground with a cascade impactor and that measured from the resuspended particles. For this experiment, an open-faced filter sampler was placed adjacent to the cascade impactor in the n1ine. The particles collected on the filter were resuspended in the laboratory and Measured with the APS.A venturi aspirator is used in the apparatus developed for resuspending the particles. The venturi has a small diameter capillary tube placed in the venturi throat. High velocity air flow is passed through the venturi, thereby, creating a low pressure region at the exit of the capillary tube. The low pressure draws air through the tube. The filter with deposited particles is located at the inlet to the capillary tube where the air flow into the capillary resuspend the particles. Once airborne, the particles are deagglomerated as they pass through the high velocity air flow in the venturi throat."

An important part of initiating a site-wide ergonomics evaluation process is prioritizing jobs to be analyzed. While injury data is important, other factors such as worker discomfort and physical exertion requirements, should be considered. This paper describes the use of four sources of data (injury records, the Nordic Standardized Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, supervisor interviews, and management concerns) to prioritize jobs for ergonomic analysis. The approach described integrates the four sources using a decision matrix to prioritize jobs for ergonomics analysis.

As a part of ongoing research into the sulfidation partitioning of selected complex minerals, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research designed to selectively recover Cu from sulfidized chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Ferric chloride (FeCI3) solutions leached >90 pct of the Cu and <20 pct (sometimes < 10 pct) of the Fe in the sulfidized concentrates. Cupric chloride (CuCI2) leaches were even more selective, solubilizing essentially 100 pct of the Cu and < 5 pct of the Fe. In contrast, leaching non-sulfidized CuFeS2 with either FeCl3 or CuCl2 showed that somewhat more Fe than Cu dissolved. These studies demonstrate that Cu is substantially more leachable from sulfidized CuFeS2 than from nonsulfidized CuFeS2? The Cu-and Fe-bearing constituents generated as sulfidation products, CuS (covellite) and FeS2 (pyrite), respectively, are differentially dissolved. The solubility of Fe from pyrite in sulfidized CuFeS2 is much lower than the solubility of Fe from complex nonsulfidized sulfide where Fe and Cu are bound in the same crystal lattice. Thus, the Cu dissolves selectively, producing a high-Cu filtrate from which Cu can be recovered by cementation or by electrolysis. Flotation of CuS-FeS2 mixtures indicates partitioned phases can be physically separated if effective liberation can be achieved. Magnetic separation tests yielded less promising results.

The construction of explosion-proof electric mine equipment for operation in gassy coal mines of the United States was begun as early as 1903. In 1.906, similar equipment with special protective devices was built for export. An investigation of explosion-proof motors was conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines during 1910 and 1911. In other words, this was among the first efforts of the Bureau directed toward the saving of life and property subsequent to its establishment by act of Congress in 1910. In these early motors, those with special devices for relief of explosion pressures predominated. At that time it was generally considered that, by providing for pressure relief, the enclosures could be made lighter in weight because of the lower explosion pressures developed within.

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

Fusion of an 86-percent euxenite concentrate with ammonium sulfate was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Reaction for 4 hours at 400° C results in conversion of both the rare-earth elements and the titanium-columbium components to water-soluble compounds. Similar results are obtained with ammonium bisulfate. Stirring the fusion mass decreases the reaction time substantially. Alternatively, treating the fusion product with a 3-hour, 650° C calcining step renders the non-rare-earth constituents insoluble, thereby allowing selective leaching of a pure rare-earth fraction with an overall yield of 97 percent.

[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). (4) These results yield the standard Gibbs energy of formation for the reaction 0.9 Fe (s) + 0.5 S2 (g) = Fe0.9 S (s) (5) ?G°f = -35.229 + 12.67 x 1073T+-0.104 kcal/mole (839.5 - 1,086.6 K). Growing concern from labor unions, regulatory agencies, and industry about the safety of a prevalent underground coal mining method which utilizes remote control has prompted human factors field evaluation of mining activities. Remote control operations were implemented with little consideration given to human-system interactions. Ideally, collecting and analyzing information prior to implementing new technology would have helped to address potential problems. One such problem that operators and other mine personnel are faced with is the question of where they should safely position themselves to avoid injury while remotely operating machinery. To determine work methods employed by machine operators before and after implementation of the new method, work sampling techniques have been used to provide data about positioning of face crew members at different points in the mining cycle. This data provides information for optimal positioning, leading to safer operating procedures and identifying training shortfalls.

A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coalbed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 ft3 /day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

In March 1937 the entire country was shocked by news of an explosion of gas in a New London (Tex.) schoolhouse, which resulted in the death of 280 pupils and 14 t eachers. The Government investigators of this disaster believed that the cause was the ignition and explosion of a large volume of explosive natural gas-air mixture that had accumulated in a poorly ventilated space beneath the first floor of the main school building and that this accumulation was due to leakage from gas lin suspended underneath the floor to carry the gas supply to the school.!i/ For some years there has been a potential explosion hazard in school houses and other buildings that are supplied with water from deep wells in certain parts of Illinois. Notwi thstand.ing the disaster at New London, Tex., and the fact that there had been gas ignitions at four water wells in different parts of the State, the explosion hazard in schools and other buildings was not fully recognized until a few months after the disaster in Texas, when an explosion occurred in the settling basin of the municipal water works of Clinton, Ill., and another in a pump house of the municipal water works in Normal, Ill, The explosion in the settling tank of the municipal water works in Clinton, Ill., occurred on August 12, 1937, and a.id considerable damage to the settling tank, but fortunately no one was injured. At the time of this explosion rapairs'and aJ.terations to the water plant were in progress, and 10 men were employed in the immediate vicinity of the settling tank. Two of these men were enlarging a hole in the concrete side with an air hammer for the installation of a larger discharge line.

Phthalic anhydride is a solid having the formula C8H4O3. It is an important intermediary in production of anthraquinene, alkyd reins, and plasticizers. The combined annual production of phthalic anhydride reported by 10 major manufacturers for 112,250 tons. The raw materials in the manufacture of phthalic anhydride have been the source of numerous fires and explosions. Consequently, the need was felt to determine the temperature flammability and the ignition temperatures crude basic raw material in most phthalic anhydride production crude phthalic anhydride, and pure phthalic anhydride.

This report presents a comprehensive tabulation of lifting cost data collected from oil companies in many different fields. These data were collected during the writer&apos;s studies of surface equipment and methods of pumping oil wells, in practically all of the important oil fields in the United States and are based on average operating conditions at 57 groups of properties with a total of 4,497 producing wells. Although lifting cost is only a part of the total cost of producing oil, it nevertheless gives a representative cost figure for purposes of comparison.

On a continuous miner coal face methane concentrations are affected by the quantity of fresh intake air reaching the face. When mining the box cut on a 12.2-m (40-ft) two-pass extended cut face, the continuous miner is always at the point of deepest penetration, and operation of the machine-mounted dust scrubber and water spray system improve the flow of fresh air to the end of the box cut. However, when the continuous miner leaves the box cut to begin cutting the 40-ft slab, little is known about how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a full-scale study to answer this question. Tests were run to determine how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut with the continuous miner at three locations in the 40-fttwo-pass extended cut mining sequence; at the end of the 40-ft box cut, at the start of the 40-ft slab cut, and 6.1 m (20 ft) into the slab cut. During these tests, methane gas was uniformly released at the end of the 40-ft box cut. Methane concentrations measured0.3 m (1 ft) from the roof and face of the box cut were used to estimate face airflow quantities. Fresh air flow rates of 1.89and 4.72 m/sec (4,000 and 10.000 cfm), scrubber flow rates of 0, 4,000 and 10,000 cfm, water spray pressures of 0 and3827 kPa (0 and 120 psi), and a blowing curtain setback position of 15.2m (50 ft) were used during these tests. To improve ventilation to the end of the 40-ft box cut when the continuous miner was starting the 40-ft slab cut and 20 ft into the slab cut, the blowing curtain was advanced from its 50-ft setback to locations 40-ft and then 8.5 m (28 ft) from the face. PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer&apos;s stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.
