As part of the continuing effort by the Bureau of Mines to promote mine safety, research work is being conducted at the Experimental coal mine, Bruceton, Pa., on the prevention of coal-mine explosions and on other mine-safety problems. The principal subjects studied during the past 2 years are briefly described in this paper. Although at present these problems are relevant particularly to the mine layout and to high-speed mining practices in numerous American coal mines, it is hoped that the findings will prove interesting and useful also to our European research colleagues. Some of the investigations treated here will be presented in greater detail in forthcoming Bureau of Mines reports. 1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF COAL CUTTINGS The seams in mist American bituminous-coal mines are undercut, shear-cut, or top-cut before blasting. The cuttings arc generally loaded out with the balance of the coal. However, in some mines it is not economical to load and remove cuttings from the mine. This applies especially if the cut section of the seam is of appreciably lower grade than the rest of the coal, or if the cut is made partly into an adjacent stratum that is high in incombustible content. In such mines the cuttings are sometimes stored in random heaps in rooms or other areas, along the ribs of mine entries, or in layers on the floor of rooms or entries.

Wettability measurements and laboratory waterflood tests were compared under a wide variety of conditions. Experiments were conducted with synthetic and natural crude oils, treated and untreated outcrop and oilfield sandstone cores, and synthetic brines with and without caustic, detergent, or phosphate additives. Measurements were made on equilibrated and unequilibrated systems at 77° and 150° F. Wettability was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines method from capillary pressure curves determined with a centrifuge. The waterflood data were fitted by empirical curves; the parameters of the curves characterize primary and subordinate production and also give the ultimate oil recovery. Results showed that wettability measurements at 77° F were useful predictors of recovery efficiency in waterflood tests run at both temperatures. Oil recovery in the early stages of waterflooding increased with increasing water wettability; however, the ultimate recovery was highest at a slightly oil-wet condition. The oil displaced at highest speed in the centrifuge was correlated with ultimate recovery in waterflood tests. Chemical additives to the brine sometimes lowered wettability and also sometimes improved waterflood recovery, but wettability and recovery were not correlated with additives present. The effect of additives on recovery in waterflooding was best seen in water-oil ratio curves.

Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

As part of the Bureau of Mines methane control program, the Pittsburgh coalbed was studied in Washington and Green Counties, Pa., and in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Va., where this coalbed is now being mined at its greatest depth. The coalbed thickness appeared to be structurally controlled; the bed was generally thinner near the axes of anticlines and thicker near the axes of synclines. The overburden isopach shows a similar relationship. Most of the clay veins in coal occur in the synclinal troughs, generally under sandstone roof. Cleat orientations measured in 18 underground mines showed that face cleats are perpendicular to the axial trends of the folds, and the butt cleats are parallel to the axial trends, indicating structural control of the cleat. Measurement and analysis of surface joint orientations provide a method for predicting the cleat orientations of the coalbed, but linears measured from infrared photographs and photoindex sheets helped only to determine regional trends. The results of these investigations provide a geologic framework for rational planning for underground mine development to use the best available technology to cope with methane emissions, coalbed discontinuities, and related ground support problems.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

The first well that produced commercial quantities of oil in the Cook Inlet Basin of Alaska was completed in 1957. Since that time oil production in the basin has increased rapidly and by the end of 1969 had reached an annual rate of 74 million barrels. Five major oilfields had been developed, and two additional discoveries awaited development. Estimated amounts of recoverable oil by primary and secondary recovery methods total 2.7 billion barrels, or 36 percent of the estimated oil originally in place. Repressurization by injecting gas or water in formations containing undersaturated oil has significantly increased the volume of recoverable oil. All production has been from formations of the Tertiary age; that much of it is from depths of 10,000 feet or more is unusual for Tertiary formations. The oils are low in sulfur and contain low to moderate amounts of asphalt.

Safety devices and guards are often looked upon as the last word in safety by the men around the shop or large industrial plant . However , thorough knowledge of the details of their jobs and of the dangers attending them are even more important . It should be unnecessary for all men to go through the experience of the first man to meet an unknown danger , but that appears to be about the only way by which many learn . Practically every danger connected with the job around a mine , blast furnace , steel mill , foundry , coke oven , cement mill , or other operation , was encountered for the first time by someone , and if he was fairly fortunate he either got hurt or just missed being injured and lived to tell his " budaies " how it happened; he spread the knowledge of that particular danger . Sometimes , but not often , a man can foresee a danger . If he could always be on guard and remember everything he had ever learned and also know everything that had happened to the other fellow , and then let that knowledge keep him aware of the dangers in his own immediate " job , " so that he would work the safe way for both himself and the other fellow , he would have what safety engineers call " safety consciousness . " Being safety conscious is a fine attribute , as it really means knowing all about one's job . A man who is really safety conscious is one of the best and most efficient workmen in the whole plant . The boss wants men of that kindmen who want to learn and who try to learn every little detail about their jobwhere there is danger of spoiling the heat or getting burned by hot metal in a steel plant or of loading rock instead of coal or ore in a mine . Such men know how to do whatever job they are on easily and with the least amount of hard work and at the same time get it done as quickly as possible with safety . A man who is safety conscious has to nearly all intents and purposes developed eyes in the back of his head , if he is in a big mill where there if something going on all around him . These eyes are not real eyes , but they are what might be termed a sixth sense which he has developed by his experience in the mill as well as in other dangerous work which he may have done before in other plants . There may be occasions when a man's safety consciousness will leave him for just a short time ; this is likely to happen when he is thinking about a quarrel he had with his wife which has not been cleared up happily , or perhaps when he has bought too many things on installment and with sickness at home

This paper, describing the milling operations of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Balmat, N. Y., is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on practice at various mills in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company also operates a mine end mill at Edwards, 12 miles northeast of Balmat. Mining practice in the district, as exemplified at the Edwards mine, is described in another information circular of the Bureau of Mines.3 The writer gratefully acknowledges the generous cooperation of the company officials which made this investigation possible, and wishes to thank R. J. Mechin, manager, P. W. Wolf, mill superintendent, and F. G. Kuehl, assistant mill superintendent, for their helpful assistance. Especial thanks are due J. S. In the course of exploratory drilling during World War II by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic and Critical Minerals investigations Program, a problem arose as to the ultimate disposal of the drill core resulting from that program. The difficulties experienced in obtaining factual information to evaluate mineral deposits examined (during that program) influenced the Bureau in a decision to catalog and store the drill cores for future reference. Initially, the drill cores were stored at the nearest Bureau of Mines station that had space available for the purpose. Recently the Bureau stations at Minneapolis, Minn., and Denver, Colo., were designated as the locations of permanent drill-core storage facilities. Drill cores that are retained from Bureau of Mines mineral-exploration projects are stored at these two locations and are given preference in selecting cores for storage. Drill cores are accepted also for storage from other Government agencies, State agencies, private companies, or individuals on the basis of available facilities and consistent with the significance of the core in relation to Bureau of Mines objectives and national interest. Selection and acceptance of such drill core are determined by the Bureau of Mines. The drill cores stored at the two locations are available for inspection by any person having a legitimate interest in the mineral deposits represented by the cores. Approximately 1,850,000 feet of drill core can be stared in the facilities now available to the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 475,000 feet of drill care is stored or scheduled for storage at Minneapolis, Minn., and 240,000 feet of core stored or scheduled for storage at Denver, Colo. A list of drill core now in storage at the Bureau of Mines core-storage facilities at Denver and Minneapolis is included as appendix A.

"The Avon mica district of Latah County, Idaho, is situated on a heavily forested spur of the Thatuna Range at an average altitude of 4,000 feet. The nearest rail connection is at Avon, a small farming settlement 7 miles to the south. The main supply point is Moscow, Idaho, which is 35 miles by graveled and graded county roads from Avon.Discovery of mica-bearing pegmatites in 1885 was followed in 1888 by exploitation of several outcrop deposits. Although factual data are unavailable, past production appears to have been well in excess of $100,000. Recent production (September 191 to April 1945) amounted to 65,824.78 pounds of trimmed sheet mica and 33,294.17 pounds of punch mica having a total gross value of $434,298.The several properties of the district are variously owned by estates, individuals, and the State. When active, all wore under lease or sublease to individual operators.The deposits are in an area of pre-Cambrian schists adjacent to a small granitic outlier of the Idaho batholith. The pegmatites are nearly concordant in dip and strike to the foliation of the enclosing schists. The more persistent bodies are usually tabular, lenticular, or pegmatite. Individual dikes range in length from 10 feet or less to 300 feet.The recoverable crude mica content of the pegmatites ranges downward from a maximum of 115 pounds per ton of pegmatite mined. Material discarded in rifting and trimming operations further reduces recovery to a maximum of 5 pounds per ton -of pegmatite mined. The average recoverable sheet content of the 'recently operated .deposit is estimated at 2 pounds per ton of pegmatite -mined. Available data indicate that about 21 percent of the district's recent production of trimmed sheet mica has been ""Group A"" material suitable for exacting condenser requirements. A few of the dikes contain local concentrations of beryl.Reserves of the three known major deposits of the district are estimated at about 600 to 1,000 tons of combined ""indicated"" and ""inferred"" crude block mica. One of these deposits is inferred to contain between 150 and 450 tons of beryl.It is believed that those mica reserves are minable only under a cost-market price ratio similar to that established during 1943 and 1944. A small part of the reserves can be ""high-graded"" under the present price structure. Profitable recovery of the beryl would require a market price four to five times that paid in 1944.Preliminary examination of the Avon mica district was made by the Bureau of Mines in the summer and fall of 1942. A study of the Muscovite mine and a brief reconnaissance of the surrounding district led the Bureau to recommend that the district be explored by angle-dozer trenching."

The galvanic corrosion properties of titanium in contact with commercially pure aluminum, copper, or type 302 stainless steel in some of the common organic acids were investigated. Acids used in these experiments were 10 percent formic, acetic, lactic, citric; 1 percent oxalic and tartaric; and 9 percent oxalic. Electrode-potential measurements and several types of galvanic couple experiments were carried out. Solutions were aerated by three methods: Flow of air, flow of helium, and natural aeration. Work was done at 35° C. with couples consisting of equal areas of the 2 metals. Titanium was resistant to corrosion in most of the organic acids studied, whether alone or in contact with a dissimilar metal. However, titanium coupled with aluminum did corrode in 1- and 9-percent oxalic acid solutions. Contact with titanium usually caused aluminum to corrode by galvanic action. Copper was subject to galvanic attack in 10-percent acetic acid with a flow of air. Contact with aluminum to some solutions in which titanium is ordinarily inert and noble with respect to aluminum caused titanium to corrode

The Bureau of Mines determined the costs associated with lithium production (in various products) from demonstrated resources in seven market economy countries (MEC's). This analysis evaluated the relative economic and resource position of 16 mines or deposits, including 6 producers and 1 (Bernic Lake) operating at pilot scale. The demonstrated resource of recoverable lithium within the deposits studied is approximately 2.2 million metric tons (mt). Virtually all known MEC resources and production were covered, including resources in Chile (59 pct of the total), the United States (13 pct), Australia (11 pct), Canada (10 pct), and Bolivia, Zaire, and Zimbabwe (combined 7 pct). In addition, the large potential of lithium-enriched brines is assessed, especially those in the Atacama Basin, Chile, where production began in 1984. The lithium resource consists of lithium in spodumene, brines, and to a small extent lepidolite and petalite. Most MEC lithium trade originates from the United States, though development of brine deposits in Chile, and potential development in Bolivia, could threaten the U.S. position. Economic analysis indicated that all lithium being recovered from producing properties could be produced at less than the published market price, and that MEC resources from these properties are adequate to supply any foreseeable demand.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft3 plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.
