Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. "The methods and technologies to be used for environmental monitoring of seabed mining activities are a key issue. Due to the large water depths, there are special challenges with respect to the monitoring equipment that is suitable. DNV GL has built up substantial experience of environmental monitoring from oil & gas projects in deep waters in the Norwegian Sea.Monitoring equipment and experiences from the oil & gas sector can to a large extent be applied to seabed mining.BackgroundThe International Seabed Authority is currently developing an environmental management strategy for the Area (ISA, 2017) as a part of the work on the regulations for exploitation for mineral resources in the Area.The draft environment strategy contains provisions related to monitoring and reporting of the activities. "INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

"SUMMARYThis paper describes challenges faced when executing a programme of monitoring to measure the dynamics of currents and sediment plumes at a seamount and the solutions identified to deliver the measurements. The study site was the Tropic Seamount, which extends some 3300m above the surrounding seabed and is found at the southern limit of the Canary Island Seamount Province. The purpose of the study, which forms part of the Marine E-tech project, was to provide information on the interaction of flows with the seamount and to assess the behaviour of sediment plumes that could be generated from potential seabed mining operations targeting the recovery of ferromanganese crusts. Since the crest of the seamount is submerged to a depth of 1000m, much of the work was undertaken using remotely operated and autonomous vehicles supported by measurements from the surface vessel. Despite only limited information on currents being available for planning purposes, the combination of short term forecasting using a 3-dimesional hydrodynamic model of the study area coupled with the collection and analysis of reconnaissance data collected during the first phase of measurement activities made it possible to plan and execute a number of detailed hydrodynamic experiments on the seamount crest. The results of these experiments have advanced the understanding of the behaviour of sediment plumes in the deep ocean and will ultimately improve our ability to manage the impacts which may arise from deep sea mining operations."

In mid 1993, Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, based in Germany got the order to develop a sampling tool capable of penetrating all different types of seabed sediments including cobbles and boulders and into bedrock. BHP and their partners Benguela Concessions Ltd., had been convinced by the Bauer Trench Cutter Technology and a large scale test in Germany that this system will be the right one to fulfill their expectations for sampling the diamond area off the coast of Namibia. The technique of the tool is based on Bauer's standard cutter technology, which is widely used for the installation of cut-off and diaphragm walls all around the world. The two counterrotating cutter wheels with 12.1 tom torque each cut an area of 3 x 1.2 m (up to 3 x 3 m are possible). The material mixed with seawater was then pumped to the separation plant on board the vessel Geomaster with a capacity of approximately 700 m3/h. Cutter wheels and mud pump were mounted on a special cutter frame and connected by wire ropes and hydraulic hoses to the vessel. An outer frame with four telescopic legs supported the cutter vertically on the uneven seabed and allowed a controlled penetration of the tool up to 6 m into the diamond bearing ground. The tool required a total power installed of approximately 800 kW. All hoses, the 6-inch mud hoses as well as the hydraulic hoses, were stored and compensated on drums on board suitable for a water depth of up to 200 m. Launch and recovery of the tool was effected through the moon pool of the vessel and the 25 m high, special designed drill tower. The 65? to sampling tool had been commissioned in early 1994 in Cape Town. After intensive testing the sampling programme of more than 4000 holes could be successfully completed by January 1995.

Recent research both on active and fossil systems has demonstrated that shallow subseafloor replacement processes are not only viable depositional mechanisms for massive sulfide mineralization, but likely contributed as a major component of the mineralization occurring in large VHMS deposits and in many present-day seafloor hydrothermal systems. In the giant Neves Corvo deposit, as in many others VHMS deposits of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, there is overwhelming evidence for silicate-sulfide replacement processes being largely responsible for the efficiency of the ore-forming systems and huge size of the deposits. Textural evidences at all scales, coupled with a well-constrained mass-balance geochemical analysis, indicate that extensive replacement in the lavadominated volcanic rocks of the footwall sequence, and disseminated replacement mineralization in the volcaniclastic and/or sedimentary units were major mechanisms of ore formation in the Neves Corvo deposit. Shallow metal deposition prior to fluid discharge on the seafloor is likely to play a major role in seafloor massive sulfide mineralization. This premise should be envisaged as critical in evaluating the economic potential of seafloor resources, and should certainly be part of the equation when plans for seafloor mineral exploration missions are drawn.

Between April 2000 and April 2002, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Exploration and Mining has led 6 research expeditions totalling 160 days ship time in waters of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Australia. Five expeditions were undertaken aboard the Australian research vessel Franklin following successful competitive research proposals, and the sixth used the Indonesian vessel Baruna Jaya VIII (see Table 1). In addition, two CSIRO participants joined JOIDES Resolution for the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 in the Manus Basin of PNG. The major scientific objective underpinning these expeditions was to locate and study present-day seafloor and sub-seafloor hydrothermal ore-forming activity in order to develop improved methods of exploring for ancient mineral deposits on land that originally formed by similar processes. The research has been supported financially by a number of Australian-based mineral companies, by Australian international aid agencies, and by appropriation funds from CSIRO, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Indonesia, Portugal, New Zealand, United States of America, South Korea, and the host nations. Building upon earlier successes in the 1986-1997 PACLARK-PACMANUS programs in the Woodlark and Manus Basins of PNG, we have sought to examine a wider range of geological settings in which ancient orebodies are inferred to have formed, including both volcanic and sediment-hosted environments. We have now visited volcanic arcs, fore-arc and triple-junction related submarine volcanoes, and back arc basins associated with convergent plate margins in the SW Pacific and SE Asia, as well as conceptual Mississippi-Valley-type targets associated with warm seeps at passive margins in the Great Australian Bight (see Figure 1). Surveys ranged from northern Sulawesi via far western Bismarck volcanic arc near PNG-Indonesia border, through the eastern Manus Basin and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni chain in PNG, the western Solomon Islands festoon, the San Cristobal arc, parts of the Vitiaz arc, to the northern and southern New Hebrides arc in the Solomons and Vanuatu.

"With the acceptance of an application and a signed contract for prospecting deep-sea sulfides (2012) between the Russian Federation and the ISA, at present it is particularly important to assess the quality of oceanic sulfide minerals and to reliably estimate their resources.Some procedures of geochemical classification (chemical analyses, mineral composition of SMS) and calculations (density of ore, density of the mineral part of the ore, porosity and moisture contents) were used for estimation of mineral resources potential.The key characteristics for estimating the predicted resources of hydrothermal ore fields are the metal contents and the density of wet and dry sulfide ores. However, in the future it is impossible to provide an estimate of the predicted resources without taking into account the following important factors:- the quantitative ratio of main sulfide minerals;- proportion of non-metallic components (opal, quartz, talc);- the replacement of primary minerals by copper sulfides;- texture-structural features of sulfide ores.The offered mineral classification of the SMS is based on the prevalence of minerals in the ores and partly on their composition. The main ore-forming minerals of SMS are pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Sulfide mineralization is accompanied by the presence of nonmetallic minerals, where quartz and opal prevail, and where we also meet aragonite, talcochlorite and anhydrite."

Kennecott?s Ledgemont Laboratory developed the Cuprion Process to recover metal values from manganese nodules in the early 1970s. A reducing leach of monovalent cuprous ion attacks the manganese oxide matrix, converting the manganese dioxide to manganese carbonate and releasing the copper, nickel, cobalt, and zinc as ammine complexes. Cuprous ion is generated by contacting leach liquor with carbon monoxide. Copper, and nickel, are recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Cobalt is precipitated as cobalt sulfide and recovered as cobalt powder. Manganese, molybdenum, and zinc can be recovered optionally but have not been included in this process. Kennecott authors have described aspects of the process, but the Cuprion process has not been revealed except in patents. Tables are included for capital and operating costs and revenue. Even though economic recovery of nodules is not anticipated in the foreseeable future, some of the process steps may have application in other places. The Ledgemont Laboratory was a unique operation we think worth documenting. The report is based upon work done up until the mid 1970s. The report represents the work of the entire Kennecott nodule team. It is this author?s intention to save this result and credit the work of that nodule team. The paper is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Herbert Barner, a key member of the team who died in 2003.

Rodriguez Seamount, located 150 km off the central California coast at the base of the continental slope, was studied using the ROV Tiburon aboard MBARI?s R/V Western Flyer, October 13-16, 2003. Fe-Mn crust and rock samples were collected along the SW flank of the seamount at water depths from 700 to 2100 m; bottom-water dissolved oxygen content (O2) and temperature were determined at each sample site. Fifty-three samples of bulk crusts, crust layers, and surface scrapes (~0.5 mm) were analyzed for 59 elements. Data allow for the correlation of crust compositions with precisely known water depths and seawater O2 measured at the actual site of sample collection. This is the first detailed study of Fe-Mn crust compositions in a region of strong continental-margin upwelling. Compared to open-ocean seamount Fe-Mn crusts, Rodriguez crusts have significantly higher (2-6 fold) mean concentrations of Fe (26.9%), Al (1.65%), Si (13.0%), Cr (82 ppm), Th (64 ppm), and Ag (1.7 ppm); and significantly lower (2-8 fold) mean concentrations of Ca, P, Bi, Co, Cu, Ni, Tl, and especially Te (8.2 times lower). All but one Fe/Mn ratio are >1 compared to <1 ratios for open-ocean crusts. O2 contents (0.35-2.03 ml/L) are nearly perfectly corrected with water depth and elements correlated with one are correlated with the other. The Fe-Mn surface scrapes represent 60-450 ka (mean 150 ka) of growth, whereas the dissolved oxygen contents of seawater represent an instant in time. Assuming that the entire sample set was affected uniformly by oceanographic changes, we suggest that correlation of elements with O2 may reflect oceanographic processes. O2 has a negative correlation with P, V, As, Fe, U, Be, Pb, Cr, Mg, Y, Bi, Te, and REEs (except Ce) and a positive correlation with aluminosilicate-hosted elements (Al, K, Rb, Cs). This later relationship is related solely to water depth, indicating that detritus shed down the seamount slopes accumulates in greater abundances in deeper-water crusts. Si/Al ratios indicate that the detritus includes a large component of biosilica produced by upwelling-mediated high productivity. These observations are supported by positive correlations of aluminosilicate-hosted elements with crust growth rates (range 1.2-13.0 mm/Myr). In contrast, other elements (Sr, Co, Mn, Mg, Te, As, Mo, V, W, U, Ti, Ni, REEs, etc.) are negatively correlated with growth rates. Growth rate has a weak positive correlation with O2. These compositional characteristics indicate that even though low-O2 seawater acts as a reservoir for Mn and associated elements and produces slow growth rates, which would allow for the concentration of elements and surface oxidation processes to occur, the high rate of input of detritus and high bioproductivity ameliorate the strong concentration of most metals. This dilution is significantly enhanced by the doubling of FeOOH in the crusts--the main cause of the generally high growth rates compared to open-ocean crusts. The high growth rates limit the oxidation of Co, Tl, and especially Te on the crust surface, which is reflected by their relatively low concentrations. Within the range of oxygen contents measured, O2 has less of an influence on crust chemistry than does the availability and incorporation of FeOOH and detritus.

Seafloor polymetallic sulphides are distributed in the EEZ of Japan, including substantial deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Bonin back-arc basin. In this new frontier, the successful development of these resources in Japan is expected to bring about a new domestic supply of mineral resources. The initial stages of this development are authorized by the Basic Plan on Ocean Policy, approved by the Japanese Cabinet on April 26, 2013, and the Plan for the Development of Marine Energy and Mineral Resources, formulated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 24, 2013. In 2008, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC), commissioned by METI, began a survey and technological development programme for the development of the seafloor polymetallc sulphides (PMS) based on these Plans. The examination of four different fields: the evaluation of the amount of the resource, environmental assessment, mining technology, and processing & smelting technology, are concurrently promoted, aiming for commercialization as soon as possible. Based on the results of research for properties of geomorphology and marine environments of the target test sites in the Okinawa trough, which have been ongoing for several years, the preparation of the pilot lifting test included an in-situ excavation and crushing test conducted using test excavating and crushing systems.

The release of methane as free gas from the seafloor into the water-column well within the hydrate stability field is a natural process observed today in various ocean settings, such as the Cascadia margin, the Black Sea, the Guayamas Basin, and the Gulf of Mexico. The subsequent dissolution of gas bubbles into the water-column determines the vertical distribution of aqueous methane in the water-column and the upwards methane flux. Understanding this process not only is essential to describing the impact of natural deep-sea gas seepage, but also to assessing the hazard potential from blowouts and offshore exploitation activities, which are steadily expanding to greater ocean depths. Furthermore, the fate of methane from seeps contributes to scenarios of global change in the past and future involving the large scale destabilization of gas hydrates on a. We recently reported on the extended lifetime of methane bubbles within the hydrate stability field due to the formation of a hydrate skin (Rehder et al., 2002), based on in situ measurements of methane and argon bubble dissolution in the depth range 400 to 800 m. More recently, these observations were extended to depths from 900 to 1500 m. Single bubbles were injected from the ROV Ventana into an attached, back-illuminated, flow-through imaging box. The ascent of individual bubbles within the imaging box was recorded with Ventana?s HDTV camera system by piloting the 3-ton ROV upward, at the bubble rise velocity, for up to 400 m of vertical transit. Observed rise velocities were approximately 30cm/sec for all depths. Post-dive analysis of the HDTV video allowed detailed measurements of the bubble shrinking rates. The results of the earlier and new experiments lead to the following conclusions: (A) Methane bubbles released below the hydrate stability field showed markedly enhanced lifetimes, attributed to hydrate skin formation. The change in radius with time, dr/dt, varied from -7.5 micrometer/s above the hydrate stability field to about -1 micrometer/s at the deepest release depth. (B) Bubble lifetime within the hydrate stability field increased with distance in P-T space from the hydrate phase boundary. (C) Before hydrate skin nucleation, dr/dt for CH4 bubbles was comparable to dr/dt above the hydrate stability field. Although variable, the onset time for the hydrate skin effect to occur generally decreased with distance from the hydrate phase boundary (super-pressurization and super-cooling with respect to hydrate formation). (D) Even before the onset of the hydrate skin effect, a slight decrease of dr/dt with increasing depth was observed.

This article is a summary, with documentation and references, of recent global developments in identifying environmental issues affecting the marine mining industry. It is recognised that marine mining for various products occurs at various depths from shallow water (e.g. aggregate and diamond mining) potentially to great depths (e.g. metalliferous muds, and manganese crusts and nodules). Nevertheless there are environmental issues in common, even though the options for resolutions will vary greatly. The point of this review is to identify the issues, so that where site-specific resolutions are considered, it is possible to draw on experience with the issues elsewhere. Related mining issues, e.g. tailings effluent quality, orebody geochemistry, are mentioned where relevant but are not detailed in this article, although obviously they are a part of there solutions to the environmental issues. The environmental issues and their resolutions are important - on the basis of the ethic of not creating more impact than is inevitable, and the long-term financial and social costs at a mine-site of not getting the resolutions right.

The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has been recognized these 30 years. The thin layer-type coverage and the micro-topographic undulation of basement affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Because of these distribution characteristics, no economic feasibility has been recognized through the past economic analyses. On the basis of a recent geological study about seamount rocks, a possibility of by-product substrate recovery for phosphorous supply with cobalt-rich manganese crust mining has been highlighted. In the mining model, the substrate rocks are utilized as phosphates for agricultural and chemical usages. Under some preliminary technical and economic assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crust mining venture is examined. The results show a better economy of the venture including the substrate rock usage for phosphorous supply. Introduction Cobalt-rich Manganese Crusts and the Economic Feasibility Cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and higher cobalt concentration than manganese nodules (Cronan, 1980; Halbach, 1982; Manheim, 1986). In the earlier stage, the geological distribution characteristics were reported (Cronan, 1984; Clark et al., 1984; Misawa et al., 1987; Pichocki and Hoffert, 1987) and a systematic feasibility of the mining was studied (Hawaii DPED, 1987).

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Inactive sulfide chimneys contain the first primary, free gold grains found at a hydrothermal site on a mid-ocean ridge (P.A. Rona, Y.A. Bogdanov, E.G. Gurvich, N.A. Rimski-Korsakov, A.M. The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.
