"The fluidized bed at Division Ministro Hales (DMH) division of Codelco in Calama, Chile is currently the largest operating roaster for partial roasting of arsenic rich copper concentrates. The roaster converts the Mina Ministro Hales (MMH) enargite rich (Cu3AsS4) copper concentrates into calcine with a low arsenic content that is suitable for mixing with other copper concentrates feeding a flash furnace. The plant sets a new standard for the processing of arsenic rich concentrates, both from the quality of the calcine as well as the environmental performances. The process technology and expertise are based on the solid practical experience of treating arsenic rich concentrates from both the Boliden smelter and Outotec.The partial roasting process is located next to the mine and concentrator and includes a sulphuric acid plant with auxiliary equipment. The produced calcine has an arsenic content significantly below target and the residual sulphur meets the requirement of the flash furnace. The plant operates with high efficiency cyclones resulting in a low amount of calcine passing to the hot electrostatic precipitator (HESP). The small flow of HESP calcine dust can be combined with the low arsenic calcine and still meet the flash furnace feed arsenic requirements.SO2 formed during roasting is converted into sulphuric acid, while volatized arsenic is recovered in the wet gas cleaning section of the acid plant along with a large proportion of antimony present in the MMH concentrate. Arsenic is stabilized as calcium arsenate and sent to disposal at a specially prepared site.The present production rate (September/October 2015) is close to or higher than the original maximum design capacity of the plant.INTRODUCTIONMineralogyThe mineralogy of an ore and concentrate is important, since there is a direct link between roasting performance and concentrate mineralogy. The MMH concentrate has a good combination of minerals that makes the roasting process efficient and flexible. The main minerals are pyrite, enargite and chalcocite (Figure 1). The inert content is about 15% and consists mainly of silicate and alumina based minerals. The lead content is very low and this is desirable, since the presence of even a small amount of lead will cause a substantial increase of sintering during roasting."

It is designed to facilitate planning to make the best use of the resources. It provides information to identify areas where managerial action is required to make improvements. The optimal geochemical parameters required to form ellringite in a lime-remediated site have been investigated with the use of thermodynamic modelling. The speciation of sulphate and 10 metals analyzed in samples of a mine tailing from northern Quebec was calculated with a computer model. The model also includes calcium, which would result from the addition of lime to the system. Two speciation calculations were done. The first one is a hypothetical speciation before the onset of precipitation and was used to devise the stability fields of minerals susceptible of forming in high pHs. The stability fields were determined by building activity ratio diagrams with sulphate, aluminum and calcium species concentrations for pHs ranging from 4 to 14. The investigation was carried out for a 25°C solution with an ionic strength less than 0.12. Thermodynamics predict that an optimal stability field for ettringite in the mine tailing samples containing 10-3 mol/L SO4-2,10-2 mol/L of AI(OH)4 requires at least 10-2mol/L of Ca+2 and a pH larger than 11.6. The sulphate contents of the mine tailing samples, however, limit the precipitation of ettringite and monosulphate could be an end-precipitate. The second speciation is in equilibrium with precipitates and provides information on the speciation of the residual metals. If ellringite could be precipitated as a stable form, it could serve as a sorptive agent for residual metals, and, due to its binding properties, consolidate tailings.

"Bentonite clay has been the most common binder for iron ore pellets. Although bentonite increases pellet strength and durability, it has several disadvantages. For example, its use increases the cost of pellets and decreases pellet purity due to its composition and the higher levels of flux required to meet basicity limits. Several new types of binders have been proposed to replace clay. The binders include starch, modified humic acid (MHA), and dispersants. These binders were used to pelletize a magnetite concentrate from the United States. Typical doses of each binder type were 0.05-0.1 % starch, 0.5-0.75 % MHA, and 0.05 % dispersant. At these doses, the pellets exceeded the minimum recommended values for wet drop, dry compression strength, and fired compression strength. Pellets made with the MHA and dispersants had the lowest abrasion rates of the new binders, and were comparable to pellets made with bentonite clay. In this paper, we compare the new binders, considering pellet quality and the advantages and disadvantages of each binder type.INTRODUCTIONIron ore pelletizers need binders in order to make good quality iron ore pellets. The typical binder is bentonite clay, an alumino-silicate material. Bentonite increases the ballability and strength of iron ore concentrates, but reduces pellet iron grade and reducibility. As high quality bentonites can be expensive to ship, low quality bentonites are often used at significantly higher doses – this reduces iron grade and reducibility even further. Thus, several new types of binders have been proposed to replace bentonite clay.In this paper, we present several new binders for iron ore pellets: starch and modified humic acid (MHA). These have been tested alone and in mixtures with dispersants, or else with bentonite clay. Starch, MHA and their mixtures are briefly described below."

The transfer of hot metal desulphurising from the torpedo cars to the hot metal ladles at the IJmuiden BOS plant no.2 caused a decrease in ladle lining life from 680 to 470 heats. Changing the desulphurising agent CaC2 for CaO during a trial period, for environmental reasons, led to a further decrease in refractory life. Availability of the ladles became critical and the major reasons for the low life were identified. Solving one of them, temperature, quickly resulted in restoration of the original lives. However, re- introduction of the new desulphurising agent on 50% of the heats again resulted in a decrease, this time from 700 to 550 heats. In order to be prepared for the full introduction of the new agent, thorough investigation of worn linings was conducted, revealing the major (chemical) wear mechanisms. With these findings, a new design for the hot metal ladle is proposed.

The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded at different defocusing distances on two surface conditions (as-cast or machined) using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser system at a power of 2.5 kW and a welding speed of 6.0 m/min. Two welding modes (conduction or keyhole) have been observed. The adjustment of defocusing distance can greatly influence the establishment of conduction or keyhole modes. On the machined surface conditions conduction welding is obtained at a power density of 4.0 x 105 W/cm2. In contrast, keyhole welding is reached at a threshold irradiance of 1.5 x 106 W/cm2. Neither conduction nor stable keyhole modes have been established at a range of power density from 7.7 x 105 to 1.2 x 106 W/cm2 on the machined surface conditions. On the as-cast surface conditions keyhole is obtained at a power density as low as 4.0 x 105 W/cm2 but good surface quality is obtained at a defocusing of +2 mm. The as-cast surfaces require lower power irradiance for the formation of keyholes indicating that they have higher energy absorptivity for Nd:YAG laser beams probably due to coarse surface morphology.

INTEREST in the mineral possibilities (gold, copper) of northern Quebec, north of the Quebec-Cochrane branch of the Canadian National railway, has centred for many years in the Chibougamau district (see Figure 1). Since 1934, however, promising gold discoveries in the Rose Lake-Florence River section, 115 miles southwest of Chibougamau lake, have widened the interest, and prospectors have examined other parts of the country between Chibougamau lake and Bell river and the surrounding districts. The object of this paper is to !resent an outline of the geology, and to describe the mineral deposits, o part of this region, or, more specifically, of the part embraced by the Opawica-Chibougamau and Waswanipi map-areas(l), which include the districts about Chibougamau lake and Rose lake-Florence river, where mineral deposits are now in course of development either by surface or underground work. Early discoveries, developments, and explorations in the Chibougamau district are well summarized in the report of the Chibougamau Commission, published in 1911(2). The Commission discredited previous optimistic accounts of mineral discoveries in the area, made initially in 1903, but at the same time they expressed the opinion that, from a geological standpoint, the district promised a reward to diligent and intelligent prospecting. Their general conclusion-that prospecting in the area was not then (1911) commercially advisable in view of its inaccessibility and other handicaps shifted interest from the district until, some years later, valuable discoveries were made in the Rouyn area, and aircraft widened the field of successful exploration. During the past ten years or so, considerable energy has been spent in promoting the development of the district. The net result has been the discovery of a number of prospects, the majority of which have been explored only by trenching and, in most cases, diamond drilling.

"The presence of radon from uranium-bearing ores, waste and from backfill material introduced underground to provide ground support, work platform and waste disposal functions, requires that ventilation controls be established to maintain safe working level concentrations. One approach has been developed at Queen's University to quantify radon and radon daughter source level s and to estimate ventilation requirements necessary to maintain these safe levels.Knowledge concerning the sources of radioactive contaminants and their production quantities is of value for planning and design stages of ventilation control systems. For any given mine layout, radiation level estimates may be forecast and modified by ventilation network design where excessive production quantities may exist.Behaviour of Radon Gas in MinesRadon gas, produced from the decay of Ra-226 in a host medium, will diffuse through porous media. In areas adjacent to mine workings, radon will be liberated into the mine atmosphere. The rate of radon emanation is proportional to the rate at which radon is produced within the host material (a function of the ore grade of U308) , to the radon concentration gradient in the host pores and to the diffusion properties of the material.The radon source concentration is determined by the rate at which Rn-222 is produced by the decay of Ra-226, and by the emanating coefficient (E), or fraction of the radon which escapes from the source matrix and is free to diffuse through the pore spaces."

"The effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) including cold working by tension or rolling before aging on mechanical properties and a dispersion of secondary phase particles of an AA2519 alloy (Al–5.64Cu–0.33Mn–0.23Mg–0.15Zr–0.11Ti–0.09V–0.08Fe–0.01Si (wt. %)) was examined. It was shown that the use of tension to impart pre-strain =10% in the alloy provides the best combination of properties in peak aging condition of the material. The AA2519T87 alloy processed by tension exhibits the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 425.4±2.4, 475±2.4, 12.1±0.4, respectively. The one pass rolling leads to -5% decreases in yield stress and –20% decreases in ductility. Dislocations serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?'-phase precipitation. The positive effect of tension is attributed to the formation of more homogeneous dislocation structure, uniform distribution of ?'-phase particles with higher aspect ratio. Precipitation of the O–phase plates on {111}a habit plane was detected. In addition it was shown that the low angle boundaries are heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?' and O particles.INTRODUCTION Precipitation-hardened alloys are a commercially important group of the materials because their mechanical properties can be modified by treating and changing the microstructure. Age-hardenable aluminum alloys belonging to the Al–Cu–Mg system are widely used due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance attributed to the highly efficient strengthening by the ?'-phase (Palmer, StJohn, Nie, & Qian, 2017). An AA2519 alloy exhibiting superior mechanical properties among high-strength Al–Cu alloys (2XXX-serie) due to minor Mg additives. It is known that, in alloys with high Cu/Mg ratio (=5.6) the classic precipitation sequence (Palmer et al., 2017; Wang & Starink, 2005; Wang et al., 2010) of supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) decomposition occurs: SSSS ? "The PSI-200 is a rugged, innovative, and easy to install on-stream size analyzer. Its calibration is simple and can be done on-line, during operation. Two measurements are displayed on the panel, which are expressed as percent passing a selected size, or as any statistical diameter. These two measurements are given as two continuous 4-20 mA output signals. Operation alarms are displayed on the screen or are given as digital output signals.The PSI-200 has been used in various applications at Lakefield Research. Particle sizes ranging from 10 µm to 450 µm have been monitored successfully, with an accuracy of 1- 2%. Having the size measured continuously and reliably, optimum conditions have been established for the grinding circuit, resulting in a superior quality in pilot plant testing.INTRODUCTIONThe challenge of any operating plant is to optimize product quality, maximize throughput and minimize operating costs. The importance of particle size measurement at a grinding circuit is well recognized. Monitoring continuously the particle size and keeping the product as uniform as possible is crucial to the whole mill operation regardless of the nature of the operation.Various techniques and instruments have been developed over the years attempting to give reliable on-line size analysis data. The operating difficulties and the reliability of these equipment still present major drawbacks and none of them proved to be widely accepted.PSI-200 is a relatively new on-line analyzer. The operation is simple and of low cost and the maintenance required minimal. It measures particle size and it displays two parameters of the solids size distribution, either weight fraction of passing a certain size or any statistical diameter. Two analog outputs can be sent to a process control system and through a supervisory control loop the correct action can be taken to maintain the desired particle size (perhaps adjust the feed rate to the grinding mill)."

"Keymet Mine lies on the Elmtree River 4 miles west of Petit Rocher and about 18 miles northwest of Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. A good gravel road runs through the property.The deposit was discovered in 1880 when a vein 7 to 8 feet wide was re-ported. In 1883 the first shaft was sunk as part of an exploration program which was carried out sporadically until 1897, when the company dissolved. Activity on the property was intermittent until 1946 when the property was again staked and during the next year diamond drilling intersected the vein in several places. In December 1949 Coulee Lead and Zinc Mining Company optioned the property and held it until its sale to Keymet Mines Limited in June 1952. By July of the same year work had begun on a three-compartment shaft.Early development work was concentrated on the 150, 300 and 450 foot levels but the shaft has since been sunk to I,228 feet to allow for eight levels at intervals of 150 feet. Little lateral work has been done to date below the 600-foot level.The first mill constructed to treat the ore was to go into production in the spring of 1954, but was destroyed by fire. A second mill, having a capacity of 200 to 300 tons a day, was officially opened October 25th, 1954. Present shipments are zinc and copper-lead-silver concentrates.The rocks of the area are shale, conglomerate, limestone, and quartzite with minor interbedded volcanic rocks, all probably of Silurian age. Small plugs of Devonian acidic intrusions occur 3 miles east and about 5 miles northwest of the mine. Minor dykes of both acidic and basic rocks occur on the mine property. In many of the fine-grained sedimentary rocks the more brittle laminre have been brecciated and give the rock the appearance of an argillaceous conglomerate."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. The Boliden AITIK copper mine is located 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. A pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2005 with the aim of increasing the capacity of the existing processing plant. After analysis, options to upgrade the existing plant were abandoned in favour of building a new processing plant, with higher capacity and therefore greater profitability. A new plant could be designed with greater flexibility to make potential future expansions easier. A feasibility study for a new 36 Mt/y processing plant including fully AG grinding circuits and flotation was completed in 2006. The project was approved by the Boliden board shortly thereafter. Construction started in the beginning of 2007 and was completed during 2009. Commissioning of the new plant was undertaken in the first half of 2010. The grinding circuit consists of two lines with each line consisting of a 22.5 MW AG mill and a 10 MW Pebble mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The nominal production level is 2 200 t/h for each grinding line. This paper presents the start-up and operation of the grinding circuit.

Green chemistry principles will be discussed, and examples will be given of the use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) to selectively separate valuable metals such as rhenium and palladium from various copper refinery feed streams. Recovery of these metals has numerous advantages including (i) conservation of valuable resources, (ii) prevention of environmental damage, and (iii) elimination of capital and operating expenses due to re-processing or disposal of metal-bearing streams. INTRODUCTION Refining of copper ores has a long and successful story. The history of copper, one of the first metals mined in human history, illustrates the global challenges faced as a result of increased demand for major metals and for by-product specialty metals found with them in trace amounts (Izatt et al., 2014). Copper has valuable properties, which have sustained its use over the centuries. It is an ideal material for creation of novel materials. Some desirable properties of copper that have proved valuable in our high-technology society include suitability for alloying with many other metals; ease of joining by soldering and brazing; good combination of mechanical qualities; high resistance to corrosion; suitability for many artistic purposes; and, of great importance in the modern era, efficient and economic use as a conductor of electricity. Copper mining in the U.S.A. began in the late nineteenth century in Montana (Izatt et al., 2014). The estimated total amount of copper mined globally before 1800 is about 5 million tons, four times less than is mined in a single year today (Flanagan, 2018). Production of copper in the U.S.A. has remained fairly constant at about 1,300,000 to 1,400,000 metric tons per annum from 2013 to 2017. Specialty metals such as bismuth, rhenium, molybdenum, and others that have become essential in our 21st century technology, and precious metals such as silver, gold, and the platinum group metals (PGMs) are concentrated by geochemical processes in trace amounts in copper ores. These specialty and precious metals were discarded into tailings in early mining operations, since limited extractive technologies existed and uses for most of them were limited. Thus, economic benefits for recovering them were limited, primarily, to silver and gold. Today, copper processing is the main, and often the only, commercial source for certain of these elements (Izatt et al., 2014). For example, molybdenite (MoS2) is the predominant ore mineral of molybdenum mining (Pohl, 2011). Cu-Mo-Au porphyry ore deposits supply ~75% of the world’s copper, 50% of the molybdenum, nearly all of the rhenium, and 20% of the gold. Typical ore grades are 0.5–1.5% copper, 0.01–0.04% molybdenum, and <1.5 g/ton gold. Molybdenite is the primary source for rhenium, among the rarest of metals, which is an essential component of super alloys, such as turbine blades in the aerospace industry (Pohl, 2011). Most rhenium is obtained as a by-product of molybdenite from copper mines in Chile. The case of rhenium raises an important issue. Continued availability of rhenium, selectively concentrated in copper ores, depends on continued mining and processing of copper. Since the mining company’s main interest is typically in copper production, continued recovery of rhenium and other specialty elements present in the ore body is at risk. Dependence of specialty metal supply on continued mining of major metals exists in several additional cases including indium, gallium, selenium, tellurium, germanium and bismuth (Pohl, 2011). PGMs, on the other hand, are typically mined for their own value, which far exceeds that of associated base metals. However, copper ores often contain marketable amounts of platinum and palladium, making their separation of interest, if this can be done economically.

"Smelter Feed Preparation Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Sudbury Operations, operate 4 mills and a smelter to produce Bessemer Ni-Cu matte for refining in Norway. Approximately 1400 tons of Ni-Cu concentrate are produced daily which are dried from a filter cake containing 14% moisture to 7.5% moisture pellets. Concentrate drying is done by 4 rotary dryers as shown in the 'Dryer Performance Data' at four separate locations. The dryers all form part of the feed preparation stage prior to sintering.The rate at which concentrate can be produced through the Sinter Plant largely depends on the quality of the dried product which makes up the feed. A feed consisting of mostly hardened pellets will sinter much faster than a feed which consists of broken pellets and dust. Dryer products require:1. Good green strength to survive shipment and handling.2. Correct moisture content.3. Sizing within a range ideally from 1/4"" to 10 mesh in diameter.Dryer performance data is shown in Table 1. Capital costs between the two types of dryers are comparable with the Roto-Louvre producing generally a larger better-formed pellet. Dryer feeds differ in that at both Hardy and Fecunis, Ni-Cu concentrate filter cake is the only feed while at the Falconbridge slurry plant the dryer feed can consist of up to 10% by weight of smelter flue dust resulting in a combined concentrate-dust pellet for feeding to the Sinter Plant. To the Falconbridge Sinter Plant dryer, dust and limestone are added for the smelting process in addition to Ni-Cu concentrate."

Using a robotic 4kW Nd:YAG-laser system, Inconel 718 (1 mm sheet) was welded with and without filler wire to investigate the effect of processing parameters, including power input and welding speed, on the weld geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties. By means of both nondestructive testing and microscopic examination, the weld quality was studied to determine the nature of the welding defects (porosity, cracking and bead shape) over the processing range of 3-3.5 kW for the power input and 4.5-6 m-min-1 for the welding speed. Application of the design of experiment methodology permitted the examination of the relationship between the process parameters and mechanical properties, from which the optimized laser welding conditions could be determined for joining Inconel 718. In particular, the research results indicate that Nd:YAG-laser welding technology can achieve defects free, mechanically sound welds with narrow fusion and heat effected zones.

The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

"With the advent in Canada of large open-pit equipment, the associated wire rope required must keep pace, especially in design and construction, along with the field that leads to increased rope life.This paper will first describe the various types of shovels and draglines in use today and also the unique characteristics of the wire rope required to efficiently service this equipment.Emphasis will be placed on the special equipment and techniques required in the wire rope manufacturing, along with the maintenance procedures required for a profitable operation.IntroductionOpen-pit and strip mining is increasingly playing an important role in the Canadian mining industry.An integral part of the surface mining industry is the excavation equipment used both to strip the overburden and remove the actual orebody. Two of the more prominent pieces of equipment are the electric power shovel and dragline. These two types of equipment have increased significantly both In size and number over the last decade.Wire rope plays a significant part in the operation of these machine s. Proper selection of the correct wire rope as well as proper maintenance procedures, can result in a major saving of a mine&apos;s wire rope consumption.The most prominent ropes for shovels are the hoist ropes. Some shovels also employ crowd and retract ropes. Boom pennants are manufactured from both wire rope or galvanized bridge strand.The most prominent ropes for dragline excavators are hoist, drag, and dump ropes. Some dragline excavators have boom hoist ropes, and most large dragline excavators have a boom suspension system using galvanized bridge strand."

"Srnoky River Coal is capable ofprocessing 3 million tonnes per year ofrun-of-mine coal at the Smoky River Coal preparation facilities to produce 2.1 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile coking coal for export markets. Multi-seam surface and underground mining operations are scheduled to maintain raw coal feed to the plant. Two beneficiating circuits wash the coal. A heavy medium cyclone circuit cleans the plus 0.5 mm coal and a froth flotation circuit cleans the minus 0.5 mm coal. Clean coal is thermally dried, loaded into unit trains, treated for dust suppression, and transported to west coast port facilitiesf or export. Plant by-products are used as thermal fuel Jn an adjacent power station. Quality control procedures ensure efficient resource recovery for a yield of uniform specification product, at a 7% ash level. Introduction Smoky River Coal operates surface and underground mines in the Smoky River coalfield. Approximately 3 million tonnes per year (mt/ a) of run-of-mine (ROM) coal can be processed at the coal preparation plant to provide 2.1 mt/ a of clean, high quality, low volatile bituminous coking coal. Coal is processed by heavy media and froth flotation cleaning circuits and is thermally dried.Raw Coal Characteristics The characteristics of the ROM coal, both in terms of quality and size consistency, vary with intrinsic seam qualities and mining methods employed. The two seams mined (No. 4 and No. 10) show distinctly different washability characteristics. Seam No. 4 contains relatively few middlings and can be readily cleaned by dense-medium cyclones and froth flotation to give a clean coal at specification ash content. Seam No. JO is more difficult to wash, and the ash content of the clean coal is higher than No. 4 seam at the same operating conditions. However, when the upper I m is excluded from the plant feed, the remaining lower section has washability characteristics similar to No. 4 seam. Coal mined by underground means sometimes contains caprock and consequently tends to be dirtier than similar coal mined by surface means."
