"A review is presented of a growing number of imperatives, some self-imposed, some imposed by society, which the mining and metals industry faces in carrying out its business. These imperatives bear on all activities from the exploration phase, through engineering, design, plant construction and operation, to decommissioning.IntroductionThe mining and metals industry must learn to cope with, i.e. manage, a growing number of imperatives. Some of these, such as the need for responsible stewardship of natural resources, the requirement to respect laws and regulations, the need to provide for safe and healthy workplaces, and the need to provide appropriate returns to investors of capital , have been with the industry for a long time (fable I). But the industry now faces additional imperatives that are growing in number and in importance (fable 2):• There is the growing concern about the impact of operations, not only on the workplace environment and the external environment, but also on the need to monitor not only the chemical concentrations in various effluents but to also monitor the effects of such emissions on the environment; i.e. there is a growing concern about the ""net"" consequences of operations.• There is the need for on-going improvement in productivity and safety to compete and survive in a global economy. The global business environment has become paramount.• There is the imperative to failsafe all designs, equipment and operational procedures, and having done that to provide for containment of unavoidable spills, and to have ready and in place systems for emergency response.• There is the need, indeed the imperative, to involve all employees in various quality improvement programs.• There is the imperative to face up to ""virtual elimination/zero emissions""; and• One must have waste management plans in place to cope with the need to reduce, reuse, and recycle; and• There is the need for decommissioning plans for all operations, for the restoration of business habitats to their original states (or better). Indeed, one must engage in the decommissioning exercise from day one, i.e. right from the time of design and commissioning."

"The legacy of abandoned mines in Canada creates issues that impact on both the health and safety of Canadians and the environment. Solutions to the problems of abandoned minesites require a detailed understanding of site conditions, the engineering solutions which may be relevant, and planning for effective use of the land. In this paper, the authors outline the basic thrusts that have been developed at CANMET to address this problem. These include: multiprovincial agreements to develop a national database; methods of site rendering; a ten-year research program to develop engineering approaches; the review of a large number of case studies; and outlining the associated risks. Examples of the applications of this research are provided in the areas of: municipal, provincial, and federal co-operative projects; site-specific applications; and international linkages."

Preceded by brief general considerations such as the development of the mining industry in. the Province of Quebec, the choice of plant location, the types of problems studied etc., the paper gives a complete description of this new research and treatment center for metallic, non-metallic and asbestos ores. Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. THE Michipicoten area, one of numerous iron-bearing "Archean" segments in the Shield, contains two main types of iron formation, a normal Keewatin-type, consisting of interbanded chert, siliceous magnetite and jasper, and, gradational to this, a carbonate-sulphide type which contains large de-posits of siderite and pyrite. The carbonate-sulphide type of iron formation bears a direct and intimate relationship to the volcanic development of the area; it there-by affords some insight into genetic problems of Archeanron formation in general. The purpose of this pa-per is to summarize the geological setting of Michipicoten iron formations and to briefly review genetic aspects of recent work in the area. GENERAL GEOLOGY in largely by assorted volcanics and sediments of the Michipicoten series and younger, regional granite masses. (Fig. 1). The Michipicoten series comprises a thick assemblage of mixed flows and pyroclastics together with elastic sediments and banded iron formations. Teck Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead complex at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. Since 1997, KIVCETTM flash smelting technology has been utilized for the treatment of zinc plant residues and lead concentrates. Trail Operations’ furnace uses four water-cooled jackets for bullion tapping. This paper provides an overview of KIVCET bullion tapping for the past 16 years, and discusses successes and challenges encountered with respect to operations, training and monitoring.

"The possibilities of expanding the production rate from the Copper Mountain Mine have been examined using computer programs for analysing a complete range of data, beginning with the diamond drill assays and embracing all steps up to the final rates of return.Programs have been developed to calculate the mineralization inventory file, a matrix of blocks containing the grade and the type of mineralization estimated for each block. Given the topography, prices of metals and costs, the pit limits are optimized using a three-dimensional technique. Within the pit, ore reserves at any cutoff can be calculated. Mining of the pit is then simulated using an interactive production scheduling program on a timesharing computer. The annual tonnage and grade figures from the production schedule are input to a financial analysis program, where the present value and the rate of return are calculated at various metal prices. The expansion possibilities can be run through the programs with their respective costs, and evaluated using the rate of return on the marginal cash flow compared to the additional capital expenditure."

"Belts of Yellowknife Supergroup volcanic and sedimentary strata in the Slave Structural Province are separated by granitoid complexes. The strata and most intrusive rocks are 2.7 and 2.5 Ga old, but rocks around 3.1 Ga have been recognized in some of the complexes and are believed to represent a once-extensive sialic crust. Volcanics were erupted along rifts in this crust and the rifts became sites of crustal foundering and the development of troughs that filled with turbidites of volcanic and granitoid provenance. Present margins of the granitoid complexes may be close to the original margins of deposition of volcanics, with associated mineral deposits, and close to the thickest parts of basins of sedimentation.The Hackett River volcanic belt extends 100 kilometres between Mara River and Back River and is crudely S-shaped, with a northern sector surrounding a core of granitoid basement rocks, a northeasterly facin g central sector and a southerly facing southern sector. Up to 8 kilometres of andesitic volcanics with intercalated felsi c volcanic rocks are preserved within the central sector. The f elsic rocks include thick lenses of volcaniclastics with large, quartz-eye-bearing clasts, but the known metal deposits are not associated with these. Both of the deposit areas, the Hackett River area in the northern domal sector and the 'A itch ' Lake area 40 kilometres to the south in the central sector, are near the tops of relatively thin atypical volcanic sequences above suspected basement rocks. The Yava deposit near 'A itch , Lake overlies a unit of subaerially deposited, welded, andesit ic ash flows and the Hack ett River deposits overlie highly metamorphosed volcaniclastic rocks that include suspected ignimbrites.The deposits are notably argentijerous and lead-rich. They consist of stratigraphically zoned sheet-like bodies of iron sulphides, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite underlain by altered rocks containing chalcopyrite stringers. The Yava deposit was formed where hydrothermal fluids exuded through the fractured floor of a flooded caldera basin. The Hackett River deposits may have been formed in a similar setting and it is not inconceivable that all the known deposits in the belt were formed in a single large caldera basin, although there is no independent evidence for the required major fault separation between the Hackett River dome and the 'Aitch' Lake area."

"Gold is conventionally analyzed using fire-assay or other destructive chemical methods that impose significant sample preparation, OH&S, and skilled labour requirements. Developed over the past 15 years by the CSIRO, PhotonAssay provides a new approach. A high intensity, high-energy x-ray source is used to activate atoms of gold and other elements in bulk mineral samples. The resulting activity is counted to automatically, accurately and rapidly determine metal grade. Samples weighing 0.5–1.0 kg can be measured in a few minutes with minimal preparation. As the method is matrix-agnostic, traditionally hard-to-assay materials such as highly refractory ores, carbon pulps and copper concentrates require no special treatment. We present the status of commercial PhotonAssay systems being developed by Chrysos Corporation. The first unit with a throughput of up to 80 samples per hour is to be deployed in an Australian assay laboratory in late 2017; smaller systems suitable for providing real-time assay directly at the mine-site will be progressively rolled out from mid-2018. Performance results from extensive testing using both mine-sourced and standard reference materials are presented, demonstrating the sensitivity and accuracy of the method. Implications for replacing conventional gold assay in exploration, mining and processing operations are discussed.INTRODUCTION Accurate methods for assaying ore grade are essential throughout the exploration, mining and mineral processing value chain. The discovery and evaluation of new ore deposits, reserve and resource definition, mine operations planning, ore processing, metal accounting and product quality evaluation all rely on accurate measurement of the valuable metal content of bulk materials. The analysis of gold presents particular challenges, stemming from the very low concentrations at which commercial operations run (often part-per-million (ppm), or equivalently one gram-per-tonne levels or below), and the highly heterogeneous nature of many gold deposits. These challenges mean that any analytical method must have high sensitivity and be capable of measuring large-mass samples. The most widely used quantitative analytical method for gold is fire-assay (Hoffman, Clark and Yeager 1998). An initial ore sample typically weighing several kilograms is dried, crushed and pulverized to allow a small sub-sample (10–50 g is common) to be representatively drawn. The sub-sample is mixed with flux, litharge (lead oxide), a reducing compound and other reagents. The mixture is fired at a temperature of 1000–1200°C until molten. After cooling, the slag is removed and the lead button containing any gold present in the sample is remelted in a porous cupel. The lead is absorbed into the cupel, leaving a gold prill which is either weighed directly, or dissolved in acid and analysed via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP or ICP/MS)."

"The Cumberland Basin of Nova Scotia has long been considered a structural basin by virtue of the elliptical outcrop and inward dip pattern of the Pennsylvanian outcrops. Recent published and unpublished data indicate that subsidence began in the late Devonian, perhaps resulting from a graben or rift. The Mississippian sediments which filled the growing depression were continental, lacustrine and marine with evaporites. The cessation of the riftforming processes is recorded by the alluvial swamp-type sediments of the Pennsylvanian which filled the depression. In excess of 25,000 feet of Carboniferous rocks are believed to be present in the deepest part of the Basin. Starting with the rift hypothesis, we can speculate on the kinds of sediments, their location and the structural features present beneath the Pennsylvanian surface. Using surface exposures and a limited amount of subsurface data, we theorize that (1) the Mississippian evaporites acted as glide zones which effectively divided the Basin into two horizontal structural layers. The rocks above the evaporites, responding to Appalachian stresses, formed the long diapiric folds with cores of overthickened evaporites. Below the evaporites the structures are related to movements of the rift floor, compaction closures and structures formed by differential horizontal movements of the rift walls. (2) The rift, in its deeper parts, will have more and a greater variety of marine rocks than the outcrops indicate. Should the rift hypothesis be correct, the possibility of finding hydrocarbons is enhanced."

It is appropriate to set out a few of the more significant objective of an: accounting system: (1) The provision of historical data <•concerning past events, for the information of shareholders, tax authorities, etc. This data can also be used as a tool to predict the future. (2) The provision of a record to safeguard the company's assets and to form the basis of any claim for insurance or other damages. (3) The provision of an accounting framework in making an economic study of a proposed course of future action such as the development of an orebody or the outlay of a substantial sum for new equipment. Summary This paper discusses the fundamental principles which allow the development of a new method for studying the deformation and failure of metals in terms of &apos;internal microstrains&apos;. Internal microstrains mechanical and magnetic properties are defined and their influence on of metals is outlined. A research programme at present in progress will determine whether magnetic measurements of internal microstrains give sufficiently accurate values for predicting the performance of metals under service conditions. These magnetic test techniques are also being used to detect the beginning of plastic deformation and to trace the development of deformation processes and failure. Results of the experimental work in each field will be published. Introduction Any attempts are being made to develop a complete theory embracing the mechanical behaviour of metals. In spite of the amount of experimental data available, the theoretical approach is rather difficult, since most of the mechanical properties of a metal are determined by deviations from the pure chemical composition or the perfect crystal. Both types of deviation are difficult to reproduce experimentally and to describe theoretically. In general, there are three main avenues of approach to the problem being followed today.

"The Gregg River project is located 40 kilometres southwest of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and east of Jasper National Park. This metallurgical coal mine has been developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Mana/ta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truckshovel open-pit operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. Mining operations started in October 1982 with plant start-up following in April 1983. Introduction This paper is an overview and update of the Gregg River project, a metallurgical coal mine being developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. The Gregg River Coal leases cover 3440 hectares and are located 40 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and north of Cardinal River Coal Mine (Fig. 1). This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truck-shovel operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. A total of 31.5 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal will be sold to the Japanese over a fifteen-year term. At present, mining operations are ahead of schedule and the plant started up on schedule in April 1983. Access and Climate An all-weather road, Highway 40, connects the minesite with Hinton (the nearest commercial centre) and a Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) spur line connects the minesite with the C.N.R. main line in Edson. Hinton is accessible by road chartered airline and rail. ' ~h~ rug~ed and varied topography in the area creates large vanations m temperature and precipitation over short distances. The region is characterized by precipitation throughout the year long cold winters and short cool summers. The mean temperatur~ of the area range from a low of -14°C in January, the coldest month, to a high of 12°C in July, the warmest month. Long-term precipitation data indicates a mean yearly precipitation of 870 mm of which 620Jo occurs during the summer months."

"Gamma-ray spectral logging, a useful technique for uranium exploration and evaluation, has generally been underutilized by the Canadian mining industry. Provided that the technique is properly applied, it is capable of yielding reliable quantitative information regarding the distribution of uranium and other radioelements along the borehole under most conditions.In practice. there are numerous factors which potentially can degrade the quality of the log and thus any quantitative interpretation based on it. Fortunately, the appropriate choice of logging equipment and technique can avoid many such problems, and corrections can be applied to the data to compensate for most of the others."

Cameco's Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) started commercial uranium ore production in 2015. Initial mining was focused in areas of the ore body with relatively low concentrations of elements of concern (EOCs). As mining progressed into areas of the ore body that were richer in EOCs, some statistically significant behavior of certain analytes was noted in the water treatment circuits. It was ultimately found that the CLO ore body natively hosts numerous alkyl arsine compounds in addition to inorganic arsenide minerals. The alkyl arsines were found to be recalcitrant to typical adsorption on ferrihydrite, with the degree of recalcitrance associated with the degree of alkylation. A number of changes to the process circuits and water balance were performed and planned in order to inhibit the transport of alkyl arsines from the ore stream into the process water stream, and to optimize the overall site water usage. In some instances, the interactions of equipment in conjoined circuits of the process had controlling effects on the behavior of the overall circuit. Work continues to iterate upon the capital design features in order to further tighten the water balance, and to optimize water usage and operating costs.

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. Personnel of Mexicana de Cobre, a subsidiary of Southern Copper located in Nacozari, Sonora Mexico have been working in the past few years on the development of a process to treat and manage, in an environmentally accepted practice, the residues and effluents generated during the process. To date, this team has been reviewing existing technologies and also has explored new alternatives. At the end of this phase, a novel, efficient and complete process has been configured which will be able to treat some solid and liquid streams such as Teniente converter dust, Peirce Smith converter dust, a Sb-rich precious metals slag, copper refinery electrolyte bleed, acid plant blowdown and an acid bleed of the precious metals plant. The process will consist of a leaching stage, followed by a very selective copper precipitation using novel technology which has been named as back reactions. After copper precipitation, impurities (As, Sb and Bi) will be precipitated mainly as arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) using H2S(g) which will be generated by means of a new process developed in our company. At the end of the process, small volumes of arsenic trisulfide will be vitrified and then disposed as a stable residue.

"The No. 6 orebody is located 6 miles from the main op.eration of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited and includes open-pit and primary gyratory crushing facilities. Ore is transferred by truck to the secondary crushing facility at the main plant. About 3,500 tons of ore per day are crushed to minus % in. and ground to 68 per cent minus 400 mesh in rod and ball mills for flotation feed. Conditioning and aeration precede rougher flotation, and four stages of cleaning bring concentrates to a grade of 42 per cent Pb + Zn + Cu. Middling products are reground and refloated in a secondary flotation circuit, producing a cleaner feed and a final tails product. Primary bulk concentrate is treated with sulphur dioxide and steam-heated to l 70°F and the majority of the gangue is floated off, leaving a product that assays 57 per cent combined Pb + Zn + Cu and is suitable for marketing. This material is thickened, filtered, dried and loaded into railway cars for shipment to the smelter. Reagent use on flotation is conventional, with many compromises in dosage required to maintain the recovery of lead and zinc in the most advantageous proportions. Many refinements in the flowsheet have been made since start-up in 1966, and more may be made as laboratory and plant testwork indicate possible improvements."

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .

In the thiosulfate leaching of gold, degradation of the thiosulfate reagent is a major cost. One of the intermediary degradation products is trithionate, which also inhibits gold recovery from solution by ion exchange. Little attention has been given to this species in the context of gold leaching - the limited information on trithionate and its solution chemistry available in the literature is seldom directly related to gold leaching conditions. This review is a compilation of the published knowledge on trithionate, with a specific focus on identifying the relevance of this information to gold leaching and the shortcomings in the knowledge base.

The lion share of lithium produced globally originates from South American salars. The standard operation for lithium production utilizes an array of evaporation ponds. This process consume vast areas and is either very slow when relying on solar evaporation - roughly 18 months of residence time; or with very high energy consumption since over 90% of initial water volume needs to be evaporated. A new technology, based on solvent extraction was developed. Results indicate a distribution coefficient up to 30, and selectivity greater than 1,000 towards Na extraction. The loaded solvent is stripped using a strong mineral acid, and the product solution is the lithium derivative of that stripping acid. Utilization of this new LiSXTM technology results in reducing the area needed for a commercial plant as well as reduces the residence time. In addition applying different stripping acids can diversify the product line of such facility.
