Fine tailings produced in the milling process have traditionally been disposed of in tailings ponds. Attempts have been made to use these fine tailings in backfill, however, to date the majority of backfill operations have utilized only a small percentage of fines. The remaining fines are, therefore, being sent to tailings ponds creating a waste disposal and environmental problem. This disposal practice is even more acute in the gold milling industry where fine grinding, required for value liberation, results in the production of large quantities of fine tailings, of which a large percentage cannot be used in backfill. Through Cold-Bond Tailings Agglomeration (CBTA), these fine tailings can be agglomerated into pellets which can then be used as a coarse aggregate in back-fill. This paper presents the results of using these pellets to create an Agglomerated Tailings Paste Fill (ATPF) made entirely of fine gold mill tailings and cementing binders. Through this process, supplementary imported aggregates such as sand, gravel, rock-chips are not required while still maintaining adequate back fill strength. By using this CBTA technology, fine tailings are diverted from tailings ponds and becomes utilized as a value added resource in the form of aggregates for use in paste fill.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. "The Geophysics/Geochemistry Section of the Ontario Geological Survey initiated an aerial geophysical survey in the James Bay Lowlands, Cretaceous Basin area, District of Cochrane, Ontario. The survey was contracted to Scintrex Limited and was carried out in 1978. Approximately 8000 line kilometres of airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data were recorded. The Tridem airborne electromagnetic system was employed, mounted in a twin-engined PB Y Canso aircraft. This specific Tridem system uses a vertical coaxial coil configuration and measures in-phase and quadrature components of the secondary field at 500, 2000 and 8000 Hz.The primary purpose of this survey was to map subsurface conductivities and, in particular, to search for lignite deposits. Physical property measurements show that electrical methods should detect differen ces in conductivity between the moderately conducting clay-lignite horizons and the less conducting clay, soil, muskeg and gravel horizons. A preliminary Tridem test survey, as well as surface DC resistivity soundings, confirmed this approach. The interpretation of the present survey data indicates that Tridem is a suitable electrical method to aid lignite exploration in the James Bay Lowlands."

SINCE the beginning of this century the non-ferrous mineral industry has contributed $17,809,-000,000 to the economic growth of Canada. To contemplate the vast amount of investment capital required and the resultant beneficial distribution of these billions of dollars for labour, transportation, supplies, taxes and dividends, challenges the imagination. It is the purpose of this paper, (a) to trace the development of the industry since its formative period to the present; (b) to discuss the current situation and problems; and ( c) to attempt to peer into the hazy future. Although there are 21 metals currently being produced in Canada which are classified as non-ferrous, or as alloying metals, copper, lead, zinc, nickel-the metals which will be discussed in this paper-constitute almost 60 per cent of their total value. ;The story

This paper presents the High Current Density (HCD) Silver Electrorefining Process. A 25-year history of development of the silver electrorefining process as well as associated equipment is given. The process is simple and robust, but at the same time highly automated. With low operating costs and man power requirement it allows consistent production of 99.99 % quality cathode silver. The process ensures that no toxic gases are formed in the working environment. Silver Electrorefining is a heart of a Silver Refinery plant covering the complete range of processes from casting of silver Doré anodes to casting of the bars of refined silver or/and silver granulation. The process has been successfully applied at 11 installations world-wide with plant capacities ranging from 30 to 1500 tpa.

Over the years, concentrator plant design has evolved from a large number of small grinding mills to a small number of large mills. In many cases, all of the tonnage runs through a single mill (typically a large SAG mill), so that the plant?s performance hinges on the productivity of this one machine. Industry specifications attempt to address the critical nature of today?s grinding mills in a manner that is often overly complex, neglects economics, and is not clearly focused on the end user?s goals. This paper surveys current industry practices, and proposes an improved approach to standards writing recognizing that product design, procurement, manufacturing, and quality are all inter-related in contributing to a project?s success. The lessons learned here can be extended to specifications for all types of machinery.

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "There is general consensus that as the world continues to change at an ever-increasing pace, companies must continually adapt their operations in order to remain competitive. Those that change fast enough, survive; those that don’t, perish quickly. Today, we hear that it is not worth the time preparing corporate business plans as they are out-of-date before the ink is dry. Within the corporate environment of the 1990s, we must “think” strategically, be a “learning organization”, keep our costs low, focus on our core competencies, stay as flexible as possible and create value. So-called “sustainable competitive advantages” can be obsolete before a patent is issued — if its even worthwhile patenting the advancement. This is industry in the 1990s.Now, while all this radical change has been underway in the global industrial environment, what have Canada’s universities been doing to keep pace with the change affecting one of their major stakeholders? Have they adapted their products and services to suit the new market conditions? Have they built closer links to industry to try to understand how better to serve this important client? Do they welcome industry input as to how to redefine their mission, objectives, strategies or their course contents? Do their students graduate with skills ideally tailored for the global mining industry? In the era of communication, can they write high quality reports in English, never mind speak French or Spanish?In an effort to provide Canada’s engineering faculties with a “blueprint” for the future, the Canadian Academy of Engineering pre-pared a report entitled “Engineering Education in Canadian Universities”, published in August1993, which concluded with the following recommendations:"

"Starting January 1, 1987 employers, employees, and other taxpayers are confronted with a new set of rules dealing with the taxation of travel and housing benefits relating to isolated posts in Canada, and tax deductions relating thereto. The new rules may not be the simplest in the world, but they are reasonably fair and at least offer a hitherto unknown degree of certainty as to how such allowances are to be treated. IntroductionThe first shoe fell on February 26, 1986 when Finance Minister Michael Wilson' s first budget presented the framework for the future tax treatment of travel and housing benefits (so-called ""northern allowances"") provided to residents in remote regions of Canada. The second shoe fell some ten months later on December 22, 1986 when the Minister of Finance filled in the earlier announced framework with detailed rules. We now have a complete picture of the tax treatment of northern allowances. Here is what the picture looks like with effect from January 1, 1987.According to Revenue Canada, the net housing benefit to employees will be equal to the value of the accommodation provided, less any rent they have paid. In major centres such as Yellowknife and Whitehorse, having a developed rental housing market, the benefit amount will be based on the fair market value of the rental accommodation in that location. In other areas, employers will be required to value the housing benefits and, to assist employers, Revenue Canada has provided the following guidelines: Common shelter- $100 per month including the value of subsidized utilities Apartment! duplex-$270 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $400 per month including the value of subsidized utilities House-$450 per month excluding the value of subsidized utilities, or $650 per month in- c1uding the value of subsidized utilities.The amounts established as the values of accommodation will be adjusted annually after 1987 based on the housing component of the Consumer Price Index."

Slurry pipelining, as now under-stood and practised, can only command marginal interest in Canada, as long-distance railway freight charges in this country are generally lower than slurry pipeline tariffs. Several alternatives to conventional slurry transmission are, however, now emerging, and two such alternatives are briefly discussed with reference to coal pipelining. In one, coal is transported as a suspension in oil; the other contemplates the movement of paste "slugs." Preliminary economic estimates indicate that the resulant process simplification and adoption of common carrier principles could lead to cost reductions that might make Western coal competitive with imported fuel in the power generating stations of eastern Canada. R ECENT appraisals of slurry pipelining techniques, some-what incongruously 'based upon the performance of successful installations (1,2), are making it increasingly apparent that current solids pipelining methods can only command marginal interest as methods of bulk commodity transportation (3). Biooxidation of a high arsenic-bearing refractory gold ore was investigated to determine the arsenic removal efficiency by the cultured bacteria and to examine the effect of biological pretreatment on subsequent gold cyanidation. The biooxidation pretreatment process utilizes the ability of adapted acidophilic bacteria to oxidize pyrite and arsenopyrite and release the encapsulated gold. The released gold can be efficiently extracted by the subsequent cyanidation process. The biooxidation experiments were conducted with cultured bacteria using various sizes of agitation tanks. Leaching results showed that over 96.26 % arsenic extraction could be obtained from this ore after 6 days of bioleaching with continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Gold extraction during the cyanidation process was increased from 29.35% to 96.71% after biological pretreatment. The content of arsenic in the biooxidation residue was reduced to below 0.3%. "With falling rare earth metal prices, low cost beneficiation of rare earth minerals is essential. The “Flotation-Agglomeration-Magnetic” (FAM) separation process is a newly developed technology by IMUMR to economically recover rare earth elements from different types of deposits. The theory of FAM process is to selectively agglomerate rare earth particles and separate from gangue minerals by bubble flotation process. The flotation product is further upgraded by magnetic separation. The FAM process has been successfully applied in industrial production on the Dalucao rare earth ore, Sichuan, China. The average REO grade of rare earth concentrate is 65% in the latest 12 month production run, with an average recovery of 55%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) include fifteen lanthanide elements coupled with two chemically similar elements (yttrium and scandium). These elements are split into two sub-groups, La to Sm are classified as light rare earth elements (LREEs) and the remaining elements including yttrium are heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) (Kumari & Panda, 2015). The demand of rare earth elements surged in recent years due to their increasing usage in diverse industrial aspects including high strength magnets, phosphors, clean energy, polishing compounds and catalysts (Goley &Scott, 2014).More than 250 REE-bearing minerals have been discovered, but many minerals are with very low concentrations of REEs, varying from 10-300 ppm (Adam &Ping, 2013). The most common rare earth minerals mined are bastnaesite, monazite, xenotime and ion-adoption REE (Chelgani & Rudolph, 2015; Kanazawa & Kamitani, 2006). Before the 1960s, most rare earth resources were extracted from monazite in the beach placer, with the exploiting of Mountain Pass in the United States and Bayan Obo mine in China, bastnaesite became the chief mineral source of rare earth resources (Klinger, 2015). These minerals are commonly separated with gangue minerals by froth flotation, gravity concentration, magnetic separation, or any combination thereof based on their specific physical characteristics (Zhou & Wang, 2014; Adam & Richard, 2014; Yang & Satur, 2015; Xia & Brian, 2015a,b)."

"Bankfield Consolidated Mines, Limited, and Tombill Gold Mines, Limited, in the Little Long Lac area, Ontario, mined an orebody that was common to both. The discovery' of this orebody was made by surface prospecting in May, 1932, on Bankfield ground, following an original discovery made in the same manner on the same property on a small reef in Magnet lake in October, 1931. The production from the two mines between 1937 and 1942 was approximately 135,000 oz. gold from about 420,000 tons of ore, an average grade of 0.32 oz. a ton. Production was nearly equally divided between the two properties. Both mines are now closed, the ore exhausted.""The ore is mainly sheared and fractured greywacke and porphyry impregnated by silica and small amounts of metallic minerals. To a lesser extent there are definite quartz veins in the ore zone""(l). The metallic minerals present were principally pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, and native gold .As at other mines in the Little Long Lac area, an elongated, broad, deep trough of folded, steeply dipping volcanic and sedimentary rocks, striking roughly east-west and surrounded by younger granite, is host to the orebodies of the Bankfield and Tombill. In the immediate area of the two mines iron formation and conglomerate bands occur nearby both north and south of an intrusion of porphyry-Cliorite, suggesting repetition of beds and folding. Although considerable drag folding is in evidence, folding on the above scale has neither been proved nor disproved."

"Within the continuous scenario of reduced aluminium price and plants production costs increase, the energy consumption optimization in the aluminum electrolytic pots continues as the main focus for the producers. Energy consumption was chosen as a key performance indicator to drive the efforts and actions for improvements. Alcoa improved the energy consumption by approximately 3% from 2005 to 2015. This improvement was a result of best practices implementation, new technologies introduction, strategic actions with plant curtailments and management practices. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of the management practices for planning and operational improvements beyond the technology changes. About 10 years ago, Alcoa reorganized its approach to retain knowledge in the Smelters by using a Best Practices format. For each specific subject, a skilled team defined the minimum requirements and the Best Practices for several aspects of operation and maintenance, which affect the environment, safety, cost, customers and performance. These Best Practices were deployed to all Smelters combined with training sessions to process and operation professionals. We will describe how the Best Practices were organized, the deployment strategy used, and the approach to measure the plants’ success. We will describe the management approach that includes Manufacturing Analyses focused on 3-year potential, annual planning, and weekly monitoring of plant stability. A manufacturing analysis is organized at select plants with cross-functional participation of specialists from technical, operational, procurement and finance. The output of a manufacturing analysis includes a roadmap of enablers to improve energy efficiency. A quarterly follow-up of enabler deployment is held with the plant and resources that participated in the analysis. Annually, there is a Planning Process where energy consumption enablers are selected to be implemented during the next 3 years for each plant. A monthly critical analysis is made by the plants with regional best practice support. On a weekly basis, key performance indicators are reviewed with determination of a stability index for each plant. Any deviation signal of unstable condition is alerted and supporting resources are diverted to the plant to reverse trend with countermeasures.INTRODUCTIONDue to factors like excess aluminum in the market and lower consumption in China, the LME price is declining along the last years, as showed in Figure 1. In 2011, the price peaked at US$ 2,400/ton and since then, continues to trend down and approaching the lowest level at US$ 1,500/ton in the last 5 years."

"Drilling results from the established levels at AngloRouyn Mines Limited had indicated inadequate tonnages to meet the planning schedule. It was decided to develop the main zone of the orebody below the bottom working level of the mine. The orebody dips north at an average of 50 degrees and plunges to the west at about 10 degrees. Due to the need for rapid development of this area, a decision was made to use trackless equipment.This paper describes the method used and highlights the use of small 5-ton diesel trucks as carriers for the 2-cu.yd LHD machine. The method achieved advances of about 1,000 feet per month, at a dip of 12 degrees over a length of close to 2,000 feet, using as few as 20 men per day."

Introduction During the past summer, detailed geological mapping was extended to cover the entire group of 31 claims owned by Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Ltd., and considerable new information was revealed by development and exploratory work underground. These new facts provide a more complete view of the lithology and structure of the area than has heretofore been available. They also necessitate revision of certain interpretations presented last year by Peale (l), and have served to straighten out some of the problems suggested by Porritt (2). The purpose of this paper is to outline in a broad way the relations as now understood and to discuss in detail certain points which should be of interest to members of the Institute. Maps and records by the mine staff have been freely used in arriving at the interpretation presented in the following pages. The writers are especially indebted to Mr. R. V. Porritt, the mine manager, with whom many of the problems touched upon were discussed on the ground and whose intimate knowledge of the geology of the underground workings aided greatly in testing various hypotheses. The writers have profited greatly, also, from close association with Dr. W. F. James during the course of the work. Permission to publish the included data has very kindly been given .by the management.

"Crush pillars are designed to be in a crushed state whilst being formed at the mining face. The residual stress state of these failed pillars provides a local support function in mining stopes and is used in the majority of the intermediate depth South African platinum mines. On mines utilising crush pillars, the pillar dimensions are selected to achieve a width to height ratio of approximately two. This is not achieved in most cases as a result of practical mining problems and poor pillar-cutting discipline. Furthermore, pillar dimensions are seldom adjusted to compensate for the various factors governing crush pillar behaviour. The pillars should, however, be in a crushed state whilst being formed or whilst still in close proximity to the mining face to prevent potential damaging seismicity.An underground investigation was conducted into the behaviour of the crush pillars in a trial site on the Merensky Reef at Lonmin Plc. The aim of this investigation was to examine the mechanism of pillar crushing and the related rock mass behaviour. The underground test results and pillar behaviour are compared to a limit equilibrium model to investigate if the model provides a useful approximation of the behaviour of the crush pillars. This paper details some of the preliminary findings.INTRODUCTIONOn most mining operations, the design of crush pillars is based on trial and error. As the pillar strength is unknown, the pillar sizes are adjusted to obtain the correct behaviour. Crush pillar dimensions are generally selected to give a width to height ratio (w:h) of approximately 2:1, (Ryder and Jager, 2002). Several factors affect the behaviour of the crush pillars and in many cases satisfactory pillar crushing is not achieved. This results in a seismic hazard in many of the mines using crush pillars. If pillar crushing is not initiated whilst the pillar is being formed at the mining face, as the mining face advances and the pillars move to the back area of a stope, some pillars may burst while oversized pillars may punch into the footwall. If pillars are designed in such a way that they are fractured during cutting by the face abutment stresses so that the pillars will already have yielded and reached their residual strength, further compression of the pillars will be associated with an increase in load and stability will be ensured, (Ozbay and Roberts, 1988). The stiffness of the strata must therefore be greater than the post-peak stiffness of the pillar (Figure 1) or violent pillar failure and hanging wall instability will occur. The pillar design should be aimed at determining pillar dimensions for which the post-peak curve of the pillar is as flat as possible."

In industry, mineral and ore are still hand-picked and current automation potential is only utilised in a handful of specific applications. Recently a number of technological developments took place that may increase sorting potential, save mill costs and lead to lower overall tonnage costs. ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.
