"The Thyssen Mining Group of Companies has successfully applied ground freezing technology to numerous projects throughout Europe and North America for over 100 years. Recently, the aspect of data acquisition and data verification has received greater focus.Thyssen Mining has been engaged in several relatively deep shaft sinking projects over the past five (5) years, all of which have required ground freezing to successfully sink through water bearing rock. To safely and economically sink through a quantity of water similar to Saskatchewan’s Potash Mines, it is imperative to understand freeze wall thickness and growth rate.Critical to understanding freeze wall thickness and growth rate, is the collection of accurate data as well as the interpretation of those data. The data can then be utilized to gain a better understanding of the freeze wall growth rate in active projects as well as to provide data to be utilized in modeling for future projects.This paper elaborates on the installation and operation of the data acquisition system utilized at the Newmont Leeville project, Nevada’s first frozen shaft project. In addition, this paper elaborates on the methodology developed by Thyssen Mining to manipulate the freeze wall data derived through the data acquisition system.The successful incorporation of the new system of collection and analysis of freeze wall data for the Leeville Project has given Thyssen Mining a high degree of confidence in the understanding, as well as prediction, of the ground conditions during shaft sinking.This paper will include:•,A brief description of ground freezing and its objective;•,An overview of previous data acquisition methods employed;•,Current data acquisition methods;•,Installation requirements; and,•,Data manipulation and presentation methods."

"This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

"This paper briefly describes the surface mining operations at Smoky River Coal Limited (formerly McIntyre Mines Limited, Coal Division) near Grande Cache, Alberta. Geology, mining methods, equipment, manpower and reclamation and environment topics are discussed. Introduction Smoky River Coal Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of McIntyre Mines Limited of Calgary, Alberta, produces a high quality, low sulphur, low volatile bituminous coking coal from its minesite located at west central Alberta, approximately 20 km from the town of Grande Cache and 360 km west of Edmonton (Fig. I). Most of the coal property is contained within a 30 km long by 20 km wide block lying in a northwest-southeast direction in mountainous terrain. Elevations vary from 920 m above sea level ·at the plant·site on the Smoky River to 1,600 mat the upper levels of current and proposed mining operations. A total of 11 coal seams have been identified. Only two seams, No. 4 Seam and No. 10 Seam are currently considered of major commercial value. These seams are recovered by both surface and underground mining. Approximately 650Jo of the plant feed coal is obtained from a conventional shovel/truck surface mine; the balance is mined underground by room-andpillar methods. Background In 1921, McIntyre Mines Limited acquired some 26,300 hectares of coal leases at Smoky River. Since then the leases were explored intermittently by different companies including McIntyre. In the mid-l 960s exploration activities increased and several feasibility studies were completed. Development of the area was undertaken by McIntyre in 1968 and, in August of the same year, a long-term contract was signed with a consortium of Japanese steel mills for delivery of 2 x 106 t of clean coking coal for 15 years commencing in 1970. Production was focussed on underground mining, using longwall methods."

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that, in celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metalturgy chose our Province of British Columbia as its locale in this, our own Centennial year. I am sure your organization is justifiably proud of its achievements and growth over the period of its sixty years, and we, for our part, are justifiably proud of our growth over our first one hundred years. With your kind indulgence I pro-pose to talk to you today about our industrial growth, or, to put it an-other way, to highlight, historically, our progress in industrial development over the past one hundred years, and to take the liberty of speculating on what we may reasonably look forward to over the next few years. I am sure, Mr. Chairman, that some may have questioned the appropriateness of a talk on the industrial development of British Columbia to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, strangely enough, we in British Columbia owe our origin, constitution-ally and industrially, to the mining industry.

"There is a considerable resource of data for spherical charge cratering, both as single charges and in row-of-charge geometr(1). The data are. however, based on cratering performance to a single free planar surface.In practice. the more common circumstance involves an angular surf ace geometry. such as occurs at the toe of a bench or the wall of a stope. It is for the purpose of investigating this circumstance that the described test work was conducted.The test objectives were: (1) to observe the change in single-charge cratering performance between planesurface and angle geometry; (2) to identify the optimum performance of single charges cratering to a plane surface. cratering from a bench sub-grade position and cratering from a condition of zero sub-grade or stope wall geometry; and (3) to observe the performance of row-of-charges cratering to an angular surface at various row burials and spacing. The row charge burial and spacing dimensions were to be expressed in simple numerical multiples of single-charge depth-of-burial data."

"Unusually rich molybdenum ores (cutoff grade = 4.10/0 Mo) hosted by Lower Cambrian black shales have been mined since 1985 near Zunyi in the province of Guizhou in China. Similar ores were once worked for Mo and Ni near Dayong in the province of Hunan. In both mining areas, mineralization occurs in Lower Cambrian black shale (Niutitang Formation and stratigraphic equivalents) as a single sulfide bed or lens with exposed thicknesses up to 15 cm and reported thicknesses up to 35 cm. In addition to high Mo values (4% to 7%), ore samples contain up to 7% Ni, 2% Zn, 2.5% As, and several hundred ppb Au and Pt-group elements, but the precious metals have never been recovered from the ores. Sporadic occurrences of Mo-Ni sulfide ore beds are found in at least five provinces stretching approximately 1600 Ian from Yunnan to Zhejiang. None of the Mo-Ni ore-bed occurrences has any obvious connection with mafic or ultramafic source rocks. Similar occurrences containing elevated values for Ni, Mo, and PGE exist in Devonian black shale in the Yukon. Future exploration for Pt, Au, Mo, and Ni deposits should consider this previously unknown type of sediment-hosted mineral deposit.Sommaire - Des minerais anormalement riches en molybdène (teneur-limite = 4.1% Mo) provenant de schistes argileux noirs du Cambrien Inferieur ont été exploites depuis 1985 près de Zunyi dans la province de Guizhou en Chine. Des minerais semblables ont déjà été traire pour Mo et Ni près de Dayong dans la province de Hunan. Dans ces deux régions minières, la minéralisation se présente dans le schiste argileux noir du Cambrien Inferieur (Formation Niutitang et équivalents stratigraphiques) sous forme de couche ou lentille unique de sulfures avec des épaisseurs exposées de plus de 15 cm et des épaisseurs rapport6es de plus de 35 cm. En plus des fortes teneurs en Mo (4%-7%), des échantillons du minerai contiennent jusqu’ à 7% de Ni, 2% de Zn, 2.5% d'As, et plusieurs centaines de ppb d'or et d'éléments du groupe du platine; toutefois, les métaux précieux n'ont jamais été récupérés des minerais. Des présences sporadiques sous forme de couches de minerai sulfure de Mo-Ni se retrouvent dans pas moins de cinq provinces s'etendant sur 1600 km de Yunnan a Zhijiang. Aucune de ces présences de minerais, sous forme de couches, ne semble associée a des roches du type mafique ou ultramafique. Des présences similaires contenant des teneurs élevées en Ni, Mo et EOP se retrouvent dans le schiste argileux noir Devonien du Yukon. "Three varieties of till are recognized in the Beardmore-Geraldton area: local lodgement till, nonlocal carbonate till, and local supraglacial till. The local lodgement till unit is examined in detail for the first time in this paper. It is the best potential overburden exploration medium for gold and other metals because its particles were locally-derived and deposited subglacially, probably within a few kilometres downglacier (southwestward) from their sources, and have not been diluted by distantly-derived glacialdebris. Both local tills are richer in gold and other metals, relative to nonlocal carbonate till. Local lodgement till rests on bedrock and was encountered frequently at or near the surface in thin drift/bedrock terrain (a widespread terrain type within the west half of the study area), and commonly at the base of boreholes in thick till terrain.INTRODUCTIONDrift prospecting in areas of glaciated terrain has been well documented (in a variety of journal publications and symposium volumes; e.g . Strobel and Faure 1987; MacDonald and Mills 1988) and has proven valuable especially where overburden thicknesses hinder traditional exploration techniques. Drift prospecting techniques may well prove valuable in the Beardmore Geraldton area. This applies especially to the Wildgoose Lake Turkey Lake area where a thick and laterally extensive sheet of nonlocal carbonate till has impeded conventional mineral exploration programs (Fig. I; note the lack of gold occurrences around Wildgoose Lake).Till in .particular has been cited as the best prospecting medium among the various types of glacial sediment (e.g. Shilts 1984). Three end member till varieties are recognized in the study area: (I) local lodgement till which rests directly on bedrock; (2) non local carbonate till; and (3) local supraglacial till which occurs predominatly within, or just downglacier of, upland areas where it commonly mantles the other till varieties. Previous authors have documented how the non local carbonate till hinders gold exploration (Geddes and Kristjansson 1986; Karrow and Geddes 1987; Kristjansson 1986; Hicock 1986, 1987a, b, 1988; Kristjansson and Thorieifson 1987; Thorleifson and Kristjansson 1987, 1988a, b) and why the local supraglacial till may be a good unit for prospecting (Hicock 1986). One detailed surficial geology map sheet of the area has been published (Kristjansson et al., 1988) and others are in preparation. Closs and Sado (1981) reported on the geochemistry of soils and glacial sediments in the west half of the study area. This paper documents the local lodgement till unit and demonstrates why it is the best overburden unit to use for drift prospecting."

"Removal of radium from uranium tailings would substantially lessen their environmental impact because it would eliminate, or greatly reduce, the hazards arising from radon emanation, leaching of radium, dust dispersal and gamma radiation. A process is described to extract radium from tailings by leaching in 3M Nael solution. The radium can be rapidly leached at ambient temperatures by either multi-stage contact in agitated vessels or washing on a tailings filter cake. Extraction efficiencies ranging from 80 to 94% have been measured for tailings derived from a number of Australian ores.Methods for radium recovery from the leach solution by precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption have been examined. Precipitation as barium/radium sulphate appears to be the most suitable approach. A possible flow diagram for the process is proposed which involves recycle of the saline leach liquor.IntroductionDisposal of mill tailings is the most contentious environmental issue facing the uranium mining industry. The conventional approach to managing tailings is to store them in a dam above ground. Attempts have been made to stabilize some tailings piles by physical or chemical methods. In a few cases, the tailings have been covered with earth and revegetated. However, most tailings piles from abandoned mills are in a neglected state and subject to the erosive and dispersive forces of nature. The cost of remedial action is high. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has estimated that it will cost up to $130 million to rehabilitate abandoned mill sites in the U.S .A..Environmental authorities are now insisting that uranium mining companies improve their methods of tailings disposal. In the United States, the preferred approach is burial, either in mines or in specially excavated pits. Tailings retention systems as operated in Canada are regarded as storage facilities until an acceptable method of disposal is found. In Australia, the Fox Commission recommended that tailings from the Ranger project should be returned to the open-cut mine. Returning tailings to the mine has considerable merit, but it is not always a viable option. In many underground operations, it is not physically possible to fit all the tailings in the worked-out mine. In other cases, the groundwater hydrology of the mine may be unfavourable."

MR. G. G. BOWSER: Mr. Kalbhenn's paper is an excellent one and is a concise description of a very interesting piece of work. It is well known that a great deal of preliminary study was given to this job before the final plans were made. It is due to this thorough preparation .chat the work progressed so satisfactorily, smoothly, and safely. The ideas carried out in the construction of the hardwood pack, timbered compartment, inclined raise, loading chute, and steel-boomed room, all contributed to a successful conclusion of the work. The extra care in being certain that the compartment shafts were well timbered was especially necessary on account of the difficult blasting conditions. In other words, the foundations .of this job were well and truly laid. The blasting in this work was very difficult due to the nature of the Strata. Working under an ever precarious roof condition and completing .this job with only two lost-time accidents is a record of which to be proud. The shaft men engaged on this work are also due for praise. I regret I did not visit this work while it was in progress. It was not in lack of interest. This, however, more or less proves that the blasting end .of this job went along with practically no trouble. I have seen the nature of the rock, as I made several visits to the tunnels while they were being put through from the Phalen to the Harbour seam. According to figures in Mr. Kalbhenn's paper, the explosives consumption works out to 1.61 pounds per cubic yard of rock in the solid, or 0.8 pounds per ton. The explosives consumption in the tunnels ran from 2.86 to 3.46 pounds per cubic yard or an average of 1.58 pounds per ton of rock. Of course, the rock in the shaft was blasted in the most economical way possible, as far as powder costs are concerned, as the face advanced at close -wright angles to the strata and gravity was acting with the explosive. The tunnels were driven nearly 'end on' the strata and bottom holes had to be lifted, and I believe there was some re-drilling of ribs left in the floor. I would like to congratulate Mr. Kalbhenn on his very fine paper.

"The Kidd Creek copper smelter started operation in June 1981 using the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process. A steady increase in plant production rates has been demonstrated, and the annual tonnage of concentrate smelted is now double the original design rate. This paper summarizes recent modifications made to increase concentrate feed rates, increase on-line time, reduce copper losses and control the impurity level in anode copper. It includes improvements made to furnace design, improvements to reduce downtime f or boiler cleaning, and improvements made to the acid plant to allow handling of increased gas flowrates and higher gas strengths while maintaining low acid plant emission rates. IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Division of Fal conbridge Limited operates a base-metal mining and metallurgical complex, located in Timmins, Ontario, which includes an underground mine, a 13 500 tonne/day concentrator, a 130000 tonne/year zinc plant and a copper smelter and refinery, The copper smelter and refinery were commissioned in 1981, with an installed capacity of 59 000 tonnes/ year of cathode. The smelter, utilizing the continuous smelting technology of the Mitsubishi Process, has subsequently been expanded in production capacity, and in 1991 produced 113 500 tonnes of blister copper The capacity of the refinery, which uses Onahama No. 3 tankhouse technology, has been increased to 96 000 tonnes/year of cathode. The capacity increase at the smelter has been realized through the input of additional oxygen to both the smelting and converting furnaces, without increasing the process off-gas flowrate through the associated waste heat boilers.In this paper, a brief review of smelter operation and modifications in the period 1982 to 1987 is presented, together with a more detailed discussion of operation during 1988 to 1991, and a discussion of future planned improvements."

It was determined by the authors that the water that remains in the filter cake after filtration in iron ore concentrators can contain several hundred times greater concentrations of calcium ions and other cations, due to surface chemical effects carrying the ions along with the water. Filter cake from two plants was analyzed. The water retained in samples of magnetite concentrate filter cake in Plant 1 contained 5088 ppm calcium and 5995 ppm magnesium, while the Plant 2 filter cake contained 231 ppm calcium and 119 ppm magnesium. These levels were dramatically elevated compared to the water that was removed from the concentrate by filtration for recycle to the plants (9 ppm calcium/15 ppm magnesium for Plant 1, and 11.9 ppm calcium/9.3 ppm magnesium in Plant 2). In addition to possible effects on agglomeration performance, the presence of these cations also affected the efficiency of filtration. In order to reduce the effects of these cations on filtration in Plant 2, carbon dioxide was injected into the slurry before it entered the filter press. This was found to increase filtration rates by up to 23.7%. Comparison of the results from the two plants shows that the concentrations of cations present in the filter cake will vary greatly from plant to plant, with correspondingly large variations in their effects on plant operations.

"Galena is the finest component of the product of a closed-circuit grind treating a lead-zinc ore, largely due to preferential recycling of this high-density mineral by the cyclone. For example, at the Pine Point Mines concentrator, for ~ 55% -200 mesh over-all, the galena will be close to 95% -200 mesh. This sliming of the lead can limit recovery, selectivity and dewatering. A proposed circuit modification to reduce the sliming is to incorporate a unit cell. A simulator was constructed to study the No. 3 grinding circuit at Pine Point modified by a unit cell on ball mill discharge (BMD).The simulator used a cumulative size basis rate-of-breakage with plug flow ball mill model, the parameters being obtained by laboratory grinding tests. Flotation and the cyclone models used a cumulative recovery/size matrix. The behaviour of each mineral, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and calcite/dolomite, was simulated. Simulation was adapted to a programmable calculator. A close fit to the existing circuit performance at two tonnages and mineral mixes was established.The simulator showed that the modified circuit could significantly coarsen the Pb grind, from 95% to —50% -200 mesh, depending on recovery, without substantially altering the size of the other minerals. The other principal findings were: compared to laboratory flotation tests on existing circuit BMD, the unit cell concentrate (CONC) will be coarser and markedly lower in grade; relatively low unit cell stage recoveries are desirable, because the cyclone scavenges the tail to give a circuit recovery which is higher than the unit cell stage recovery; unit cell stage recovery should not exceed the cyclone stage recovery, as the latter is the maximum circuit recovery; low unit cell stage recovery helps offset the disadvantage of the high flow at BMD; other high-density minerals will also be scavenged into the CONC, as illustrated by pyrite, making CONC quality difficult to maintain; density control of BMD flotation does not greatly alter feed density to the cyclone or ball mill.Possible plant metallurgy is forecast for a CONC diverted to final lead concentrate."

"In today's operating and investment climate, project evaluation is both more important and more difficult. It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project's commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

THE prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first (1) was published in 1937; the second (2), in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research. HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUM Animal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings. Through the courtesy of the Aluminum Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average for the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder. The harmlessness of aluminium was, by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.

Until a fire occurs, insurance and prevention work are often looked on as unavoidable necessities, but as insurance is back of all business credit, it is essential to know that in case of damage money will be available to cover the loss; while the interruption of production, often caused by a fire, brings home the realization that if prevention work avoids such an interruption, it is well worth while. Fire insurance is a legal contract guaranteeing the payment of large amounts to an owner, but it is possible there is no other important contract that receives so little consideration. Although previously carried on elsewhere, it is only of recent years that insurance engineering has been actively followed up in Canada, with inspections of an owner's property carried out for his benefit. Now inspections of this kind are made, advice on fire prevention and protection work ?is available, reports with recommendations with regard to the above are furnished periodically, and with this method applied the owner receives the broadest possible cover and security at the lowest cost. Rates are set by the underwriters by rating schedules which charge for defects in a building and allow credits for protection and other favourable features . These schedules are based on the past record of loss of mining properties as a class, so that a fire in another mining property indirectly affects you, but the amount paid is reduced in proportion as your property is improved. The writer feels, from personal experience, that there is no industry where fire prevention receives more attention than the mining industry, and it is a pleasure to advise that, due to this co-operation, some reduction in the basis rates for mining risks is now being made by the underwriters.

"This paper describes the successful pilot plant testing of a flowsheet, developed at INCO Ltd.'s J.Roy Gordon Research Laboratory (JRGRL), for improved separation of the constituent minerals in a bulk copper nickel concentrate.The flowsheet utilized the fact that xanthate concentration on the mineral surfaces is the most important variable affecting the high lime separation and that reduction of the xanthate concentration could be effected by an oxidative conditioning stage.When the adsorbed xanthate was reduced to a suitably low level, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite could be floated to leave a high grade nickel concentrate as the residue. Sodium cyanide was added to the froth product to depress pyrrhotite and any remaining pentlandite. The temporary depression of chalcopyrite by the sodium cyanide was overcome by introducing a conditioning step following cyanide addition. The advantages of the flowsheet; improved copper-nickel separation, operation without heating of the pulp, production of both high grade nickel concentrate ( 29. 5% Ni, . 26% Cu) and copper concentrate ( <O. 5% Ni, 30% Cu) were all realized."

I HAVE considerable hesitation in preparing and presenting this paper. These machines have been such an intimate part of my own experiences and predilections for such a long time that J would find it difficult to tell the story in an impersonal way. They have had several attractions for me. They were needed for the study of the fundamental features of modern milling, size analysis and accurate batch concentration of the very fine particles. I had been a millman once, a real operating millman, and, when I became academic". I always had the craving to link the academic laboratory with the field, as Rittinger and Richards had done. My first milling experience was with a small concentrator at a tin mine in Bohemia, forty-seven years ago. There was no assay office and the testing of our tailings was by means of a "Vanning Shovel", introduced from Cornwall by Captain Josiah Thomas, the great Josiah of Dolcoath, some fifteen years previously. This was a most effective instrument and it has always been a puzzle to me that it has not been more universally used by millmen. Later, at Freiberg, on the other side of the Erz Gebirge from the tin mine, I was introduced to the "Sichertrog", made out of wood shaped something like a very shallow boat or an elongated saucer, a most effective piece of apparatus when. the difficult technique of handling it was once achieved. Later, in the Slocan in British Columbia, my partner, the late Maurice Bucke, used a short length of flat trough or launder suspended by four wires, with which he got very satisfactory results as a small batch concentrator. In the University laboratory we had frequent need for something of this kind, and many efforts were made to solve the problem. With W. E. Johnston, we were working on the problem of gold-bearing telluride ores, which called insistently for a separation of the very fine telluride particles which existed only in minute quantities in the Kirkland Lake ores. Under this spur there finally developed the Superpanner, which is a mechanized combination of the Vanning Shovel, the Sichertrog, and the Maurice Bucke suspended launder.

"A computer program is described which will analyze the stability of coal pillars. The extent of the peripheral failed zone and the central elastic core of the pillar, the stress distribution across the pillar and its strength can be determined by a ""sliceby- slice"" analysis technique. The program incorporates a brittle/pseudo-ductile transition point so that a pillar may fail by brittle fracture or pseudo-ductile yield. It is shown that:(i) There is a minimum pillar stress below which fracture cannot initiate; hence there is a minimum pillar strength. (ii) In specific circumstances (narrow pillars) , once fracture initiates at the pillar edge it must propagate immediately to the pillar centre. This unstable situation is called ""catastrophic"" failure and might be regarded as a model of a pillar ""burst "". (iii) For wider pillars, the failed zone ex tends gradually into the pillar as the loading increases until it reaches the pillar centre when the pillar is deemed to have f ailed. This is called the point of ""ultimate"" failure.The critical pillar widths to avoid catastrophic and ultimate failure can be calculated.A hypothetical analysis of five rib pillars is given to illustrate the application and the results obtained from the model. The model is then used to analyze three case histories taken from the literature. The first demonstrates the applicability of the brittle/pseudo-ductile failure criteria for Pittsburgh coal. The second compares the pillar strength formulae derived here with those of Salamon and Munro(13) and Bieniawskiou . The final case history compares the model analysis with field stress measurements in a yielding pillar. In all cases the model results are compatible with the case histories."
