The recycling of steel is a crucial aspect of the shift toward a sustainable metals industry. The emphasis on steel recycling through the introduction of the scrap based mini-mill concept is also matched with a desire for greater product quality and reduced environmental impact, which, in turn, has generated important innovations. There have been significant advances in the technology for recycling steel over the last 20 years and this paper will provide an overview of these developments and discuss future directions in steel recycling including scrap management, control of tramp elements, electric arc furnace technology and ladle metallurgy.

A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. This then has implications for resource classification if the classifications are based heavily on the OK quality without consideration of the true SMU distribution.CITATION:Kentwell, D, 2014. As an integral part of the conversion from rail haulage to conveyor haulage at Henderson, over six kilometres of drifting and several large complex openings were mined. The deepest of these areas was nearly two kilometres beneath the surface, bringing all of the challenges of rock stress and heat that come with mining at these depths. Though many mines operate at these depths, the development of the infrastructure necessary to support a 36 000 tonne per day caving operation brought some unique challenges to the development mining activity. The issues handled include: finding experienced staff for a æfast trackÆ development program; rock bursts and ground conditions; inflow of 50 degree centigrade water; acceleration of the project completion; large diameter raise boring and difficult muck handling.

Forty two new apatite and zircon fission track analyses on the Kubor-Marum-Bena Bena area of northern Papua New Guinea severely constrain the timing of tectonic events and hence the tectonic models for New Guinea, particularly arc-continent collision. In addition, the data can be analysed regionally in terms of known and assumed lithospheric fault zones inferred to control mineralisation (eg. Corbett 1994; Kendrick et al 1995; Hill et al 1996) to determine reactivation of these zones. When combined with the new kinematic plate models for the evolution of New Guinea (Hall 1997) there is the potential to predict likely zones of mineralisation. The low-medium grade? Palaeozoic rocks of the Bena Bena terrane yielded a zircon fission track age of 17 Ma, indicating the time of cooling below 200¦C. The age is consistent with `the shift, at about 16-18 Ma, from volcanolithic sediments to mixed provenance sediments rich in quartz and metasedimentary lithic fragments in the southern Finisterre Ranges (Abbott et al. 1994). This shift was recorded in the Sukurum Formation, which ranges in age from Middle Miocene to Pliocene with quartzose and metasedimentary grains in all samples. Although recording rocks at temperatures of 200¦C and hence depths of ---5km, the 17 Ma age suggests the Bena Dena terrane was rapidly cooling at that time due to uplift and erosion, supplying metasediments to the southern flank of the Finisterre Range, currently 100 km to the east. Significantly, the Middle Miocene Akuna Intrusive Complex, dated 14-17 Ma by Page (1976), lies almost entirely within or adjacent to the Bena Bena terrane. Potentially the uplift, erosion and cooling of the terrane at 17 Ma may have been caused by the rising plutons. If so the 800 sq km exposure Akuna Intrusive Complex at the SE end of the Bena Bena terrane may have been the focus of uplift and supplied the metasedimentary detritus to the Finisterre Range. This suggests that the Finisterre Range was not far removed from the Bena Bena terrane, perhaps less than the 200 - 400 km indicated by Abbott et al (1984). The Akuna Intrusive Complex probably resulted from subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate beneath the PNG margin. In order for the subducted slab to reach depths of -100km below the area to facilitate partial melting and plutonism (Hamilton 1994), subduction probably commenced 3-5 Ma Ma before plutonism, ie at or prior to 20 Ma suggesting a significant change in the tectonic regime at -20 Ma, perhaps related to collision of the Solomons - Ontong Java Plateau collision (eg. Hall 1997). The main result to emerge from the 28 apatite fission track analyses is that the whole of the study area underwent rapid cooling due to uplift and denudation in the Late Miocene, mainly between 7-10 Ma. Results from several samples indicate that they were not totally overprinted prior to uplift indicating maximum burial of -3 km in the Middle Miocene, assuming normal temperature gradients. The burial is less if higher gradients are assumed, allowing for Middle Miocene plutonism. The Late Miocene cooling in the Mobile Belt agrees well with the Pliocene to Recent cooling in the Fold Belt to the SW, interpreted to be due to uplift and erosion associated with fold and thrust deformation of the Miocene Limestones (Hill & Gleadow 1989). This timing relationship suggests, that compressional deformation in the Mobile Belt occurred in the Late Miocene, at 105 Ma, and that the deformation migrated towards the undeformed foreland in the southwest in the Pliocene, at 5-2 Ma. The regional Late Miocene uplift and denudation in the Mobile Belt is also consistent with that postulated by Crowhurst et al (1996; 1997) for northwest PNG, although they considered the event to have occurred mainly from 8-5 Ma. If so, then the uplift and denudation may have been migrating from east to west as well as to the south into the Fold Belt. These timing relationships place significant constraints on tectonic models for the area, indicating that the major compressional pulse in PNG commenced in the northeast at -10 Ma and migrated to the southwest and west in the latest Miocene to Pliocene. This suggests that the initial arc-continent collision and associated shortening occurred in the Late Miocene around -10-12 Ma. This immediately followed intrusion and cooling of the Akuna Intrusive Complex at -17-14 Ma and the Bismarck Intrusive Complex at -12.5 Ma (Page 1976), indicating a linkage between the end of plutonism and the start of compressional deformation. The timing is consistent with the observation of Hamilton (1994) that in areas of subduction `the common regime in overriding plates is extensional and leading edges are crumpled only in collisions. This suggests that the Middle Miocene magmatism in northern New Guinea occurred during extension above a subducting slab and was terminated by Late Miocene arc collision and resultant compression commencing at -10-12 Ma. In general, these data indicate that the acme of denudation and cooling in the Mobile Belt was in the Late Miocene, with relatively little denudation there since. In contrast, Hill & Gleadow (1989) found that the peak of denudation in basement outcrops in the Fold Belt was in the Pliocene at -4 Ma. Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

Gas drainage has been practiced for many years mainly for safety reasons in various countries in Europe, in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Legislation has been developed to control the production, transport- ation and utilisation of methane and associated gases. Gas drainage is now being carried out at some Australian Collieries, but as this is a new venture little specific legislation is available. This paper briefly describes the drainage methods and legislation applied overseas, gives a brief history of gas drainage in N.S.W. and indicates the deficiencies of the present legislation. It outlines the approach to new legislation which will deal comprehensively with gas drainage operations and utilisation in New South Wales.

Gold is actively precipitating at grades up to 80 g/tonne at and near the surface of the Waiotapu geothermal system, located in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Many characteristics of this active system makes it analogous to the environment deduced for epithermal precious metal mineralisation in the circum Pacific region.The near surface area of the geothermal system is approximately 17 km2, caused to an extent by the upflow of deep, neutral pH fluids being deflected into a lateral flow of several km. This fluid has pervasively altered the rhyolite pyroclastic and ash deposits to an assemblage generally characterised by the term propylitic; major vein mineralisation is not observed. The temperatures at the 1100 m limit of drilling are 300¦C, and decrease to the surface along a boiling point curve.Condensation of steam and H S (subsequently oxidised) at the surface (derived 2from deep boiling) results in the formation of heated acid sulphate waters. These have caused a shallow (50 m) cap of advanced argillic alteration. Mixing of this oxidised condensate with the deep neutral pH fluid appears to be the principle cause of gold deposition from thiosulphide complexes. The major focus of gold mineralisation is in Champagne Pool, a hot spring which fills one of several 900 year old hydrothermal eruption craters.

The recovery of Copper by solvent extraction was arguably the most significant hydrometallurgical development of the 1960's. However, only dilute solutions at relatively high ph. could be treated effectively. ICVAcorga introduced in the 1970's the much stronger salicylaldoxime based reagents, which resulted in a dramatic change in plant configurations. So for example plants which normally use 3 extraction stages and 3 stripping stages could be reduced to 2 + 2 staging or 2 + 1 staging, even for high copper tenors at low ph. Leach liquors up to 40 g A copper are being treated at some locations so that almost any copper bearing liquor can now be purified by solvent extraction. Following a considerable amount of research and development effort ICI/Acorga have made further significant advances in the application of copper solvent extraction. The first of these is in computerised flowsheeting. In conjunction with ICI's Process Technology Department, Acorga have developed the Minchem Computer program, which uses laboratory generated equilibrium data to facilitate optimisation of metallurgical operating parameters. The program can operate in two modes, prediction and assessment so that given suitable extract and strip isotherms plant performance can be predicted for a given set of conditions. Alternatively existing plant performance can be assessed rapidly and accurately, thus providing a valuable quality control tool. Pilot plant work can now be restricted to evaluation of the physical aspects of the SX circuits, and to looking for the unexpected. Secondly using the patented 5-Nonyl Salicylaldoxime in precise admixture with a number of carefully selected strip modifiers, the Acorga M-range has resulted. Reagent selection from these new extractants can now be based on how the reagent can alleviate the remaining problems such as hydrolytic stability, transfer of iron, and organic losses by entrainment which may be related to particular features of the operating plant. Thus the Acorga M-range has enhanced and significantly extended the use of solvent extraction for copper, whilst refinements in the processing of metallurgical data has considerably simplified circuit design and analysis of results.

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

The proposed underground mine at Porgera forms an integral part of the Porgera Joint Venture project in Enga Province in the remote Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The total in-situ reserves are approaching 400 tonnes of gold making the Porgera deposit one of the largest in the world. The remote, rugged and inhospitable terrain, recent unstable geological environment and primitive yet socially complex nature of the densely populated local community, combine to make the Porgera project very different to developing mines in Australia. The Porgera project is a challenging and exciting mining exploration venture in the final stages of feasibility study submission and negotiations with the National Government of Papua New Guinea. A 1476 m exploration adit was driven in the footwall of the high grade mineralisation for diamond drilling purposes as part of the evaluations necessary for the feasibility study. Ground conditions encountered have ranged from weak mudstones with high water content, requiring immediate steel set support, to competent intrusives.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia.As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary.The works are situated at Port Kembla (New SouthWales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. Thi.s will mean a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operations. The works as they exist are capable of turning out 1200 long tons of refined copper per month. It is gratifying here to note the unqualified success with whichthe E.S.A. refined copper met with on first being put on the market.

Mine ecological monitoring schemes are often conducted only to address compliance and in some cases do not have the sufficient statistical power or understanding of ecological systems to assess, quantitatively, the meeting of rehabilitation targets or mine impacts. Monitoring schemes for rehabilitation commonly rely on analogue sites or premining baselines (reference sites) to assess whether rehabilitation sites are ecologically similar and thus successfully rehabilitated. In the case of monitoring for mine impacts, if the impacted sites diverge from reference data, the site is considered to be impacted. Fundamental to any monitoring scheme is testing the sampling design to ensure that it can detect these differences if they are present through adequate sample sizes (ie statistical power). However, a good understanding of the ecological system is required to ensure that differences detected are ecologically significant. Modelling ecosystem properties can provide a quantitative understanding of how ecosystems change over time and space, in response to natural environmental variations and thus aid in determining significant ecological differences. Furthermore, modelling methods can be used to predict future ecosystem states. Within the ecological literature, guidelines for robust statistical monitoring designs and modelling methods exist but are not routinely being used in the mining industry. This paper uses simple examples to discuss: problems with current compliance monitoring methods; importance of robust statistical techniques; and how modelling can assist rehabilitation assessment and guide monitoring schemes. The aim of this paper is to describe general monitoring and modelling methods that could be potentially used for mine site monitoring and closure assessment. These methods are often considered by mining companies as an extra expense that provide little practical benefit, and the domain of academia; however, engaging these methods may be more cost-effective in the long-run than conducting untargeted monitoring schemes that give no confidence to regulators on whether rehabilitation criteria have been met. Currently, many commercial sinter plants are exploring the potential addition of high-grade iron ore concentrates to improve the sinter grade. A better understanding of the ore blend, granule behaviour and green bed properties is critical to making this change and maintaining productivity in the sinter plant. This study compared the performance of a laboratory scale granulation drum to a commercial scale unit. The blend used was an Asia-Pacific style sinter blend containing iron ore concentrates. The operating conditions of the two granulation drums (laboratory and commercial scale) were fixed at the same Froude Number (0.00337), space factor (15 per cent) and residence time (4.5 mins). The granules were characterised by measuring their mean size, size distribution and green bed voidage. It was found that the laboratory scale granules were representative of commercial sinter plant granules at similar moisture content. When the moisture was fixed at ~6.9 per cent, granulation time had no significant effect. A further fundamental investigation was undertaken to measure the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity of the individual ores used in this study. The kinetics of water absorption were measured which showed that water absorbs quickly into the ore particles within the first 60 seconds, slowing down until final saturation was attained after six hours. A linear relationship between the water holding capacity and intra-particle porosity was noted for different ore particle sizes. The results of this study provide a baseline understanding of the current commercial sinter blend and encourage exploring the specific effect of increasing the proportion of ultrafine concentrates in sintering in a future study.

Combining ultramafic mine tailings and acidic mine drainage via mineral carbonation to sequester carbon dioxide, presents an opportunity to minimise waste on mine sites. Low pH mine water with trace element concentrations can be effectively treated by high magnesium mine tailings, a useful source of finely ground reactive matrix. By using milled tailings for mineral carbonation, there are negligible energy requirements for communition of ore rocks to reduce particle size. This study aimed to assess the technical applicability of reacting ultramafic tailings and acidic mine water through mineral carbonation technology in the mining industry. Dissolution has been identified as the rate limiting stage in mineral carbonation; hence the study focused on identifying optimal dissolution conditions. Ultramafic tailings (particle size <100 µm) derived from serpentinite ore, were reacted with a typical mine water that was synthesised in the laboratory. Through variances in the solid to liquid ratios and temperature of dissolution, a maximum five per cent magnesium dissolution efficiency was reached at 50 g/L and 100°C. The acidic mine water was neutralised (from pH <2 to pH ~6) and iron, copper and zinc ion concentrations reduced significantly during the formation of solid precipitates. Carbonation was undertaken by injecting carbon dioxide into the magnesium-rich solution to form stable carbonates. The experimental work demonstrated proof of concept; however, dissolution efficiency and carbon dioxide sequestration was low, indicating that further research would be required before larger scale implementation.CITATION:Malli, H, Bouzalakos, S and Timms, W, 2015. An important task therefore, is to create future attractive mining workplaces that engage and motivate young people to work within the industry. Our intention with this article is to illustrate a possible way forward for the mining industry to form such workplaces. We discuss different aspects of an attractive workplace and summarise our findings in a specification of basic demands dealing with safety, physical and psycho-social work environments and social responsibilities.

B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

The Rum Jungle Uranium Province is lo cated on the western margin of the Pine Creek Geosyncline approximately 60km south of Darwin. Uranium was discovered in the Embayment area (Whites Deposit) in 1949, spurring active ex- ploration and leading to the discovery of the Rum Jungle Creek South Deposit in 1959. With the discovery of the Alligator Rivers Uranium Field, new criteria in the understanding of the controls for mineralization sparked a re- surgence of exploration activities in the Rum Jungle area. Uranerz Australia Pty. Ltd. (UAL) commenced exploration in the area in the late 1970's in joint venture and in its own right. Two domal Archaean granitic complexes, the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes, domi- nate the area. They are unconformably mantled by Lower Proterozoic sediments metamorphosed to middle to upper greenschist grade. The Lower Proterozoic sediments are unconformably over- lain by remnant blocks of Carpentarian sand- stone, generally preserved in downfaulted blocks. Over a six year period extensive geolo- gical, geochemical and geophysical programs were conducted to reinvestigate previous target areas and locate new prospective zones. Exten- sive shallow bedrock drilling showed that lo- cally the stratigraphic succession is quite variable and cannot always be divided into an ordered succession for correlation with groups and formations established by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). Deformational events resulting in intraformational recumbent folding and overthrusting also account for repetition of certain lithotypes.

In 2005, Dyno Nobel Canada Inc, DynoConsult and CANMET-MMSL used their pool of expertise in blasting, ground control, open pit and underground mining, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a research project aimed at evaluating the role of electronic detonators in the development of a sustainable energy-efficient rock reduction process. The overall objectives were to improve health and safety in a mining environment and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The study was conducted in a quarry located in Nova Scotia, Canada, with the objective of taking advantage of the higher accuracy and flexibility of electronic detonators towards improving blast efficiency and measuring its impact on productivity in a quarry environment and energy savings. Optimising the blast sequence was the first aspect to be considered before starting to look at designing bigger blasts and achieving productivity improvements, without creating additional environmental concerns, as the quarryÆs location was representing a challenge in itself in the surrounding community. The use of high-speed cameras (500 fps) was an improved means of analysing blast dynamics during the firing sequence. Seismic monitoring and linear superposition techniques were also applied to validate the sequences to be tested in all three specific geological areas. The combination of field measurements allowed to identify the optimal blasting sequences that would then be delivered accurately with the electronic initiation systems. The data from 12 blasts (six with electronic detonators and six with pyrotechnic detonators) carried out in three different geological formations (soft, medium and hard rock) showed that the electronic blasting technology could increase rock fragmentation by 15 to 20 per cent. A more uniform distribution of rock fragment size was also obtained. Blast improvements on downstream processes resulted in a five per cent productivity increase in rock excavation and transportation, a ten per cent energy reduction in primary crushing and a 15 per cent increase in the primary crusher throughput. A prototype soft-sensor based on primary crusher data (eg energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computer process model were developed for online measurement of a rock operating work index. Furthermore, rock samples were collected and specimens were prepared in order to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock materials, evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and examine the development of micro and macro-fractures under binocular and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. A reduction in rock hardness by about 30 per cent was observed after blasting. During most of its history, the metallurgical industry has been seen as a source of pollution for the environment. However, during the second half of the 20th century, as the world environmental legislation became more protective and the global environmental conscience consolidated, this landscape began to change. Metallurgical activities have become increasingly related to the social and environmental impacts caused by human activities. With the adoption of environmental management in steel plants, there has been a significant change in steel-related activities which have begun to introduce modern plants, managed with environmental, social and productive efficiency. More and more, steel companies search for a decrease in negative impacts of their industrial operations on the environment, fitting them to the current environmental legislation and even increasing productivity and profitability. The steel industry has started to become a clean and more efficient industry. This work presents a case study of a sustainable steel plant project, located in an environmental preservation area. The project includes treatment and reuse of industrial liquid effluents, air emissions control, noise control, recycling, recovery and adequate waste management. It also incorporates production processes using clean technologies, capable of coproducing energy resources which may be used in the plant showing how is it possible to produce steel with environmental and social responsibility and even increase the enterpriseÆs profitability.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points.
