Drilling underground can be a hazardous undertaking in many circumstances. Raiseboring and boxhole boring underground could form an integral part of the block caving production methodology and getting the right mix of technical capability, ergonomics and economical viability has been the goal of many machine manufacturers. With the introduction of the Terratec Universal Boring Machine concept, flexibility of raiseboring, downreaming and boxholing has been enhanced by the introduction of a single machine that will perform all three processes. In addition to its technical flexibility, additional safety features have been introduced that will eliminate many sources of injury by mechanising most of the operational procedures. Together with the one-man remote operation, this machine design addresses and solves many of the safety issues. This paper outlines the machine concept, details its safety features and shows the techno-economic advantages for use in the block caving environment. Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large massive orebodies because of the inherent low costs and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are mined by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Extraction of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling (Figure 1).

In an on-going study of the chemistry of base metal sulphide flotation, the effect of the inclusion of cyanide in the reagents suite has been studied, with special reference to ore from Pasminco Mining's Elura mine. Cyanide has been variously described as an iron sulphide depressant, a preventor of sphalerite activation and as an activator of galena. In the case described here, the cyanide appeared to act as an enhancer of the galena flotation performance, raising the lead recoveries by 25 per cent but leaving the sphalerite and pyrite responses unaffected. The lead rougher flotation performance with and without cyanide was investigated over a wide range of redox potentials (0 mV to 400 mV SHE). In all cases, the inclusion of the cyanide brought about an increase in the galena recovery and was responsible for a faster rate of galena flotation during the initial stages of the beneficiation. A surface characterisation study (XPS) of the lead flotation stage, with and without cyanide, indicated that the reagent interacted specifically with the galena and pyrite minerals. It was possible to correlate the surface absorption of the cyanide on the lead and iron sulphides with improvements to the flotation performance using the combination of surface spectroscopy and laboratory flotation Testwork.

An alternative stoping method has been adopted for narrow vein stoping at the Tasmania Mine in Northern Tasmania. Colloquially described as ‘Radial-in-Reef’ (RiR) stoping, the method employs the drilling of radial rings in the plane of the Reef from a drill stub located at the geographic centre of the proposed stope panel.Production from the Western Zone of the Tasmania Reef has been undertaken remotely from the Reef since 2007, after a detailed geotechnical engineering analysis indicated that the integrity of the sill drives could not guarantee an acceptable level of confidence should an anticipated seismic event occur within a radius of 10 m. The key tenet of the remote mining approach was the exclusion of personnel from sill drives once stoping had commenced. The remote mining method had to be ‘retrofitted’ to four existing stoping blocks totalling 11 sill drives which totalled 160 m vertically. The remote mining method proved to be complex, cumbersome and very expensive. However, the ore was extracted successfully.By early 2010, previously developed ore had largely been exhausted and the future development with an orebody open at depth presented the opportunity to review the current extraction method. However, the new extraction method needed to maintain the tenet of excluding personnel from sill drives of active stoping blocks, but seek opportunities to reduce the difficult and costly aspects of the previous method. The new ‘Radial-in-Reef’ stoping reduced the development requirement from six to two drives per ore block. Cost implications aside, the significant reduction in prestoping extraction ratio was expected to also reduce the likelihood of seismicity. Transverse production rings were designed to be drilled radially from a drill stub mined from a mid-stope footwall drive. Stopes totalling up to 7000 tonnes were planned be fired in a single electronic blast. Extraction was designed to take place from a basal sill drive under teleremote operation. At the time of writing, the method was under trial.

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

Effective control of blast vibration and flyrock requires that significant factors be identified and quantified, that the blast be designed to ensure both blasting efficiency and compliance with applicable limits, and that the blast design be effectively implemented by field personnel. Significant factors contributing to ground vibration and airblast are: charge mass; distance and direction relative to the blast; drilling design: burden, spacing; stemming height and material type; hole diameter and depth; and initiation sequence and direction.In addition, airblast may be strongly influenced by shielding and meteorological conditions. Ground vibration is also influenced by the transmission characteristics of the ground and soil. Flyrock throw is determined by charge mass, burden, stemming height, blasthole diameter and depth. The contribution of each of the factors has been quantified and models developed to enable the environmental outcomes of blast design to be predicted. Environmental blast design is necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory limits and the implementation of æsafeÆ exclusion zones for flyrock clearance. This paper discusses the models used for environmental blast design and demonstrates the often significant effects that lapse during implementation of the design can have on predicted outcomes. In practice, drillers and shotfirers are sometimes confronted with situations that require modifications to the blast design to cope with the real site situation. Methods are presented that may be used by drillers and shotfirers to evaluate the effect of these modifications, the tolerances that must be reached during their work practice and checking procedures, and the consequences of their actions.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. Having passed through a number of previous phases the best longwall results in Australia have shown a significant increase in the last two years. The results expected from a longwall face can be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the utilisation, and the available operating hours. Back analysis of the results achieved suggests that, on average, recent improvements arise from the higher capacity equipment recently installed; the utilisation has in fact reduced slightly. Review of the constraints which limit the longwall results, i.e. shearer speed, AFC capacity, support, advance rate, and man travel speed, shows that little improvement can be expected in the ideal production rate in thinner seams. In thicker seams the AFC often proves the overriding constraint and further increase in equipment size could lead to increased future ideal production rates and is expected. In all cases a concerted effort to increase the utilisation achieved is likely. For deep mines with thin to medium seams this offers the most viable path to improvement; by contrast thick seams with highwall/shallow access may benefit from further increase in equipment size.

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

We outline a first version of an ambitious goal: The world's first horizontal (matrix-independent) generic sampling standard. The specific needs and requirements are overwhelming, as all the world's analytical standards follow strict matrix or material type classification pigeonholes, leading to a plethora of analytical standards. One could rightly expect a similar multiplication regarding sampling standards, yet the singular HORIZONTAL is aimed at being truly generic. Also the existing style of standards writing is cumbersome and partly contradictory. The current work is presently being pursued in CEN and European Union standardisation regimens, for which reason full disclosure and publication is not allowed. Respecting this constraint, we unofficially present selected key issues involved in developing HORIZONTAL: The objective and scope of a horizontal sampling standard is to delineate the minimum set of principles and procedures needed to guarantee documented representative sampling for all types of materials. The horizontal standard is designed for two types of use: 1. auditing/assessing/ improving the reliability of an existing sampling procedure, and 2. design and implementation of a new sampling procedure (new lot type). The principles in this standard are all derived from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), but the standard is far from a mere collection of TOS principles. Representativeness is a characteristic of the sampling process, not of samples themselves. For practical purposes, the horizontal standard follows the fundamental distinction between 'stationary lots' (0-D, 2-D, 3-D lots) and 'dynamic lots' (within TOS aka process sampling - including extended, non-moving 1-D lots). TOS' principles of 'correctness' must never be broken at any stage, lest representativeness is irretrievably lost. The horizontal standard is not written in the mandatory fashion for legally binding matrix-specific standards, eg ISO - for the present overarching purpose a different style had to be developed. The standard must be immediately understandable in full, which merits special demands, eg extensive use of didactic illustrations. HORIZONTAL introduces an all-inclusive sampling variability measure, Relative Sampling Variance (RSV) which is for sampling of stationary lots as variographics is for process sampling - RSV is to be used as a quality criterion for any stationary sampling procedure as applied to a specific heterogeneity (lot/material). The target for this standard is all individuals, companies, organisations and regulatory bodies who are responsible for sampling: technicians, process engineers, laboratory personal, academic and industrial scientists as well as project leaders, technical managers/directors and top managers. Based on current R&D we illustrate the principles promulgated by HORIZONTAL with cases from exploration and mining of minerals commodities, a Finnsh 'Autosampler' at work in the mining context (RSV) as well as sampling equipment for use in the cement and mineral commodities industries. The paper reviews some of the aerodynamic factors in the blast furnace process and outlines the areas requiring further study. Detailed discussion is given to the pressure drop in both the dry and the wet zone of the furnace and an optimum coke size is suggested for minimum pressure drop. The effect of various charging sequences on the distribution of the gas in the furnace shaft is treated and notes on stack injection included. Flow phenomena limiting blast furnace output and the influence of aerodynamics on the movement of the bed in the furnace are outlined and these include fluidisation, flooding and raceway formation. A mention is made of alkalis, sulphur, zinc, softening, and oil injection and the mixed effect in blast furnace economics of increased tuyere velocity as problems requiring further research.

Concern has been expressed that Vezins can be biased when used for sampling fine materials if the cutter speed is as high as the 0.6 m/s which is often used. Using modelling techniques that consider airflow as well as particles, we have endeavoured to investigate sampling bias as a function of the size of fine particles, cutter aperture, cutter speed, shape of cutter blades, and the size of the gap between the inlet pipe and the cutter blades. Using crude estimates of the rate of airflow and a simple model of a single particle moving through air led to an approximate rule that bias will not occur due to mechanisms related to airflow for particles larger than about 200 microns; and bias will always occur for particles smaller than about 40 microns. Gold was initially discovered at Ballarat in 1851. After initial alluvial mining, underground quartz mining commenced in 1853, continuing until 1918. The historic miners were considered to be capable of mining anywhere in the world after overcoming the difficult conditions within the Ballarat goldfields. Whilst mining has changed dramatically since the early 1900s the challenges with underground mining at Ballarat have not. Modern pumping systems cope with the moderate water inflows. However, modern machinery and efficient mining methods influence opening sizes and extraction techniques. In some cases modern techniques have accentuated the challenging ground conditions and complex orebodies that were faced by the historic miners. As the Ballarat East project has progressed towards production, technical challenges relating to geomechanics and mine planning are being resolved resourcefully.

As part of a research program sponsored by Continental Copper and Steel Industries, Inc. (cos), investigations have been conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. to study the effect of high current densities on electrolytic processes. The importance of high current densities has long been recognized, particularly in the deposition of copper, and the results of considerable research on the subject have been reported in recent years (19 29 39). This is not surprising because, besides plant capacity, current density is the other major factor which will determine the process economics. In the production of electrolytic copper, current efficiency, steam consumption, number of cells, building area, metal inventory, cathode purity, and power consumption are all affected by current density. The ability to maintain a high current efficiency and satisfactory cathode purity while increasing the current density to twice or three times that commonly practiced could result in considerable saving of capital investment and reduce the operating cost per ton of metal produced. The optimum current density i.e., that current density of which production cost would be at a minimum, can be established from an analysis of the various inter- relating factors (49 59). A review of.all operating electrolytic plants (electrowinning and electrorefining) will indicate that most of these plants are operating at 50% or less of the optimum current density (6). One of the reasons for not using the optimum current density may be attributed to the fact that conventional electrolytic tank- house equipment does not perform satisfactorily at high current density operations. Various investigators (19 79 8) have attempted to overcome this limitation by modifying the design of the electrolytic cell, virtually unchanged since it was first introduced in the late 1800's. Previously, these attempts have not resulted in,a cell design suitable for commercial application. However, recently, a cell has been designed which performs efficiently under such conditions. This is a CCS development (patents applied for).

The Black Star lead and zinc ore-bodies, situated in the western zone of mineralisation at Mount Isa occupy an area 2000 ft. long with varying widths from 100 ft. to 300 ft. The strike is N5°W, and the average dip 60° West.To test at depth the potentialities of this area, an extensive diamond drilling campaign was commenced on 16th October 1927. It was continued, with from one to six machines working, until the end of 1931. During this period, 26 inclined holes, with an average depth of 1224 ft, and a total footage of 31,828 ft. were completed. A vertical hole, 2452 ft. deep, for comparative purposes, has been omitted.These drilling operations came directly under the charge of G J Gray, General Superintendent of Mount Isa Mines, and, in the early stages were supervised by E. D. McDermott, of the Mining Trust, London. The foremen, who were in charge of various sections of the drilling operations, were: H Vale, F Bray, J Winston and A A Sanstedt.

Most blast fragmentation models assume the rock mass properties, explosive properties and blast design variables to be constants and uniformly distributed within a blast. However, in reality all these input variables vary within a blast resulting in variation in the resulting fragmentation size distribution. A stochastic modelling approach is introduced in this paper to quantify this variation. This technique takes the input variables as statistical distributions rather than constants and through several thousand iterations, generates a statistical representation of the expected fragmentation resulting from a production blast. A case study of three production blasts from a large open pit mine are presented and the modelled fragmentation æenvelopeÆ shows good agreement with the fragmentation æenvelopeÆ estimated from Split image analysis. The various blast-related parameters influence different parts of the fragmentation distribution, eg rock strength and explosive velocity of detonation have most impact on the fines. The technique is used to identify the parameters that have the greatest influence on various size fractions. Such an analysis will be useful to direct resources to efficiently minimise the variation.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

FOR some time past keen interest has been shown in both America and South Africa in the mining drill-steel problem. This interest has extended to Australian mining fields, and Australian drill users, ever desirous of increasing efficiency, are vigorously attacking the problem. The writer has recently been engaged in the investigation of the problem on two of ,the biggest mining fields in Australia, and has formed very definite conclusions concerning the causes of many drill-steel casualties. He puts these views forward in the hope that they may be of interest to, both drill manufacturers and drill users. The subject is here dealt with mainly from the aspect of the properties of the steel and the modifications of these properties whensubjected to various manipulations. It is generally admitted that the drilling machine has greatly increased in power and efficiency during recent years, and the consequence is that the machine is demanding better service from the steel. This is being impressed on the drill users by an increase in steel casualties. This fact has led many mining people to the view that the machine has developed so rapidly that the steel maker has not been able to keep pace, and that consequently the steel isfailing by fatigue 0:1; so-called crystallization. This view is rather depressing. The writer, on the other hand, is inclined to discountenance fatigue as a serious factor under good normal working conditions where the steel is carefully manufactured and supplied to the user under suitable structural and sound conditions, and has subsequently received kind treatment at the hands of the drill sharpener and the drill user.It is not reasonable to attribute failures to fatigue until it has definitely been proved that the steel is fundamentally sound and is in the best structural condition to resist the stresses it is called upon to withstand, and, this being so, that all fundamental principles of...
