When a new material becomes available to industry, it is useful to describe its properties as a guide to its most effective application; and when the new material may be produced in compositions having a series of graded properties, tests to select the combination of properties best adapted for various uses are helpful. The class of materials to be considered in this paper are hard tool materials produced by processes of powder metallurgy from hard carbide constituents and various matrices of iron, nickel or cobalt, or alloys of them with tungsten, or tungsten and carbon. The customary use of carbide hard alloys is for metal-cutting tools; although wire-drawing dies, lathe centers, follow rests, grinding rests, burnishers, rolls, extrusion dies, measuring gauges and micrometers, and a number of other tools are also made with these hard alloys as the essential wear-resisting parts. The properties and tests to be considered are those affecting these uses. In the development of tool materials since the industrial revolution we have had carbon tool steels, Mushet steel, high-speed steels, stellites, and now cemented carbide compositions. For an understanding of the latter category of materials their properties and uses relative to the older and more familiar tool materials will be considered. Hardness has been the property of greatest practical interest in tool materials. The word "hardness" is a generalized term lacking definite-ness unless the specific test used is described. However, efforts to explain physical properties as a consequence of chemical bond, and distance between atoms in chemical compounds have been illuminating. This seems the most generalized attack on the problem, and is based upon the idea that atoms in a lattice are held together as the square of the valence and inversely as the square of the distance between the atoms. PENNSYLVANIA will be remembered, as long as oil is produced, as the cradle of the industry of petroleum in North America. It was on Oil Creek, near Titusville, Venango Co., .that Cola Edwin L. Drake, superintendent for the Seneca Oil Co., brought in the first commercial oil well on Aug. 28, 1859. Great difficulty was experienced in getting the well down to the producing depth of 69 ft. (21 m.) with the spring-pole system then in vogue for punching shallow water wells, so the novel expedient of driving an iron tube through the surface clays and quicksand was finally resorted to. The well had an initial yield of 25 bbl. a day on the pump, but soon went off, though 2000 bbl. were produced by the end of the year. With the Drake well a success, a young industry sprang into being, the rapid growth of which has been second to none in the country and the value of whose product is only surpassed by that of coal. For years the only producing territory, the Pennsylvania-New York field attained its greatest production in 1891, when the bringing in of the McDonald pool, between Pittsburgh and the West Virginia line, gave a total of over 33,000,000 bbl. At present the field, combined with West Vir-ginia and southeast Ohio, gives 25,000,000 barrels. GEOLOGY AND STRATIGRAPHY In general, the Appalachian field is a huge geosyncline, the axis of which runs roughly northeast-southwest, from north of the New York state line south through Brookeville, Kittanning, Pittsburgh, Washington, through the southwest corner of the state of Pennsylvania into West Virginia. Minor folding has accompanied or followed the dominant fold of the field, and it is from these structures near the Pennsylvania-West Virginia line and their influence on the accumulation of oil and gas that I. C. White, state geologist of West Virginia, obtained his evidence for anticlinal guidance of prospecting.

The Oklahoma legislature recently passed a bill providing for "the creation of an oil and gas department under the jurisdiction of the Corporation Commission, authorizing the Corporation Commission to appoint a chief oil and gas conservation agent, and conferring exclusive jurisdiction on the Corporation Commission in reference to the conservation of oil and gas, and the inspection of gasoline and oil, the product of crude petroleum, and repealing all acts or parts of acts in conflict therewith and declaring an emergency." Some of the functions of the new bureau include the receiving and filing of all well logs, and the direction and supervision of plugging all abandoned oil and gas wells, under rules prescribed by the Corporation Commission. The two leading petroleum-producing States of the country, Oklahoma and California, have now established oil and gas bureaus with a staff of inspectors to see that the important rules relating to the conservation of oil and gas are thoroughly enforced. The economic significance and the value of well logs in the conservation work has been recognized, and the necessary legal action taken to insure and procure them. William B. Heroy, of the Government Land Classification Board, in a personal communication to the writer, says that the drilling of wells is also regulated by public authority in the Roswell artesian basin in southeastern New Mexico, where a permit must be obtained for the drilling of any well and a certified log of the well recorded with a county official. The method is said to give fairly satisfactory results. In a recent article1 a National instead of a State Bureau was suggested for collecting and filing well logs. In discussing the paper, L. L. Hutchison characterized such a plan as impractical because the average driller or contractor will often juggle or guess at the log and will not keep the record sufficiently close or accurate, making it necessary to maintain a special man at each well for the sole purpose of obtaining

THIS paper is based upon 12 years' experience in the Southwest, including three years that were spent in constant traveling as examining engineer for the Phelps-Dodge Corporation. The material was gathered during rather extensive work in Bisbee, Clifton-Morenci, Globe, and Tombstone, and also on short and rapid trips into most of the mining camps and prospect fields of New Mexico, Arizona, the desert country of California, and as much of Sonora as was safe at the time. My methods of observation and my deductions are not put forward as new or scientific; they are simply rough field methods, based upon short notes, rough sketches, and largely upon memory, which I have found useful for coordinating geological data for the purpose of passing quick judgment on mining possibilities in certain districts exhibiting uniform characteristics. The opportunities for observation have been better these last few years than ever before, clue to the unprecedented activity in mining, which has caused the reopening of hundreds of old mines and the starting of even more numerous prospects all over the mining States. POSSIBLE SYSTEMS OF CLASSIFICATION By Geological Provinces There are a number of well defined geological provinces in the territory under discussion, and a study of their individual features is of interest. The following are a few of those that axe most striking in their uniformity. 1. The "Desert province," extending roughly from. Wickenburg, Ariz., to and beyond Barstow, Cal. In its north-south extent it reaches up to the Colorado River and clown into Sonora, but overlaps other provinces. It is characterized by a worn-down basement of schistose and granitic rocks, on which rest remnants of Paleozoic and pre-Paleozoic sediments, including very old limestones. The sediments are disrupted and contorted. Alteration in the mineralized areas is very prominent, especially in the schists and limestones. Cenozoic volcanic rocks, principally of semi-basic composition, have been intruded into this complex and sometimes cover it as lava flows.

In the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Probably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section A0 at the start of the test, as a function of the strain e0, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwikl, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area A. a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain e0 = ?L0 is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?LO in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and e0 does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would be thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. In some cases the so-called "true stress," obtained by dividing the load P by the actual area of cross section A existing when the load P was applied, is plotted as a function of the strain

Discussion of the paper of D. Foster Hewett, Bulletin To. 27, March, 1909, pp. 291 to 310. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.:-Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally dis¬covered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit essentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection. Vanadium was first discovered and recognized as a distinct element in the slags obtained in smelting the titaniferous magnetites at Taberg, Sweden. For a long time, therefore, we looked upon the titaniferous magnetites as its hone. Analyses proved, years ago, that it was present in the ores of this type in New Jersey and in the Adirondacks. It was quite rarely determined, but when looked for it was, I think, invariably found, although the Amount seldom exceeded 0.5 per cent. of V,05., In just what combination it exists in the titaniferous ores is uncertain. One might imagine V2O3 replacing some of the Fe2O3 of magnetite; or, since in the lead series vanadates and phosphates are closely akin, one might wonder if a lime-vanadate could take the place of apatite. Yet no lime-vanadate has been found in nature, and apatite itself is usually rare in the titaniferous ores. When percentage-curves are plotted for a series of analyses of the ores, the line of vanadic oxide shows a curious sympathetic behavior with the line of chromic oxide;' but the data are somewhat limited, and no compound has sug¬gested itself which throws light on the matter. Work on the calculation of vertical two-phase flow gradients by Cia. Shell de Venezuela has been based mainly on the "energy-loss" method proposed by Poett-mann and Carpenter in 1952. The "energy-loss-factor" correlation proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was based on relatively low-rate flow data. This correlation proved inapplicable to high-rate flow conditions. In an attempt to establish a satisfactory correlation for high rates, a series of experiments was carried out at rates up to 5,000 BID in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's La Paz field in Venezuela, using tubing strings fitted with electronic surface-recording pressure elements. As a result of these experiments a correlation between energy-loss factor and mass flow rate was established which is believed to be applicable to a wide range of conduit sizes and crude types at high flow rates (e.g., above 900 BID for 27/8-in. OD tubing). It is anticipated that the resulting gradient calculations will have an accuracy of the order of % 5 per cent. At lower flow rates the energy-loss factor cannot be considered as constant for any mass rate of flow, but varies with the free gas in place and the mixture velocity. No satisfactory correlating parameter was obtained. As a practical compromise for low flow rates, a modification of the curve proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter was used. In practice this was found to give gradient accuracies of approxirnately ± 10 per cent clown to flow rates as low as 300 B/D in 27/8-in. tubing. INTRODUCTION Production operations in Cia. Shell de Venezuela's light- and medium-crude fields are principally concerned with high-rate flowing or gas-lift wells. Under these conditions the analysis of well performance, the selection of production strings and the design of gas-lift installations are vitally dependent on an accurate knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in vertical two-phase flow. Initially, attempts were made to establish the gradients empirically as done by Gilbert,' but the results were not reliable due to scarcity of data over a full range of rates and gas-oil ratios. Several methods of calculation based on energy-balance considerations were attempted, but the computations were cumbersome and the results cliscouraging. In 1952 a paper was published by Poettmann and Carpenter' which proposed a new approach. Their method was also based on an energy-balance equation. but it was original in that no attempt was made to evaluate the various components making up the total energy losses. Instead, they proposed a form of analysis which assumed that all the significant energy losses for mutiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional 1osses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. The basic method was applied in Venezuela to the problem of annular flow gradients in the La Paz and Mara fields" This involved establishing a new energy-loss-factor correlation to cover high flow rates and, also, some adaptation of the method to permit mechanized calculation using punch-card machines. The final result was 1 set of gradient curves for La Paz and Mara conditions which proved to be surprisingly accurate. With the encouraging results of the annular flow calculations, several attempts were made to obtain a corresponding set of curves for tubing flow. Here, unfortunately, little progress could be made. The original correlation of Poettmann and Carpenter was based on rather 1imited data derived from low-rate observations in 23/8- and 27/8-in. OD tubing. It did not cover the higher range of production rates, and extrapolation proved unsuccessful. A new correlation covering high flow rates was required, but this proved to be extremely difficult to establish since tubing flow pressure measurements at high rates did not exist—due to the difficulty of running pressure bombs against high-velocity flow. The necessity for reliable tubing flow data increased with the development of the new concessions in Lake Maracaibo, where high-rate tubing flow from depths of 10,500 ft became routine. Thus. it was decided to set up a full-scale test to establish a reliable energy-loss factor for tubing flow conditions. A La. Paz field light-oil producer with a potential of approximately 12,000 B/D on annular flow was chosen. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarise development of design processes used in the 1100 oreoody as a result of experience encountered. Design methods have been developed as a result of the history of ground behaviour, free-standing qualities of cemented back fill and mass blasting techniques. This paper contains an historical review of design methods previously described by Matthews ( 1972 ) , Hornsby and Sullivan (1977 and 19781, Kirkby, Blair and Hutton (19781, and Stewart (1980). The reasoning behind design philosphy changes are discussed and placed into context with methods now adopted. The 1100 orebody is Mount Isa's main producer of copper ore (5 million tonnes per year ) . Proven reserves are 120 million tonnes at 3.2% Cu. Location of the 1100 orebody in relation to overall mine geometry was well described by Dayton (1976). Geology The orebody is located in a series of massive brecciated shale lenses, in either a siliceous or dolomitic matrix, surrounded and separated by a uniform shale sequence. The whole formation is truncated at depth by a faulted contact with a greenschist facies metamorphic sequence below (Figure 1 and Figure 2) Mathias and Clark (1976). The breccia is known locally as silica dolomite and contains nearly all the economic mineralisation. Interfingering of shale and breccia often results in irregular boundaries to the silica dolomite and the ore limits. Geometry The geometry of the orebodies is shown by Figures 1, 2 and 3. Figure 3 also shows the location of the copper orebodies in relation to the lead orebodies. Structure Although the orebody is contained within the massive breccia (u.c.s. 150-250 MPa), it is cut by shear zones sub-parallel to the regional bedding (north-south striking, dipping approximately 60o to the west), and diagonally by major transverse faults (Figure A). These major faults have continuity in excess of 300 metres, with varying amounts of displacement up to 200 metres, and are zones of potential movement.

OF SPECIAL importance in the design and construction of an iron blast-furnace plant are tile raw materials to be employed. Obviously the iron must come from some ore of that metal, but the many kinds available lead to important differences in plant arrangement, and in the design of furnaces and accessory equipment. For instance, the bulk of the gangue in the ore is subject to wide variation as is that of the ash in the fuel. A gradual increase in the bulk of raw material necessary to produce a ton of pig iron has been noted, but this has been more than offset, so far as costs of operation are concerned, by improvements in the machinery used for handling large quantities of ore. coal limestone, and slag. The mechanization of coal and iron-ore mining. the building of big ore boats and limestone carriers, of ore docks for fast loading and unloading, and the general use of heavy railroad equipment have all contributed to greatly reducing the number of man- hours required to mine, transport, and manufacture the raw materials into a ton of pig iron. This looks like a big saving and it is. If it were not for these big labor saving machines it would be impossible to produce the tonnage of iron and steel that is made each year in this country. On the other hand, the total capital investment necessary to bring down the man-hours per ton of pig iron to a 2.3 hours average at the blast furnace and to a total of only 12 man-hours from ore to metal (see Table 1) is so great that even the present high price of pig iron is probably not far above the true cost of manufacture when all the fixed charges are properly included.

A published calculation method for predicting incompressible, multidimensional fluid displacement has been adapted to the problems of water and gas coning in oil wells. Since depth and radial distance from the wellbore are the two key dimensions affecting the shape of a gas or water cone, coning calculations are well suited to the use of two-dimensional methods. The alternating direction implicit procedure (ADIP) was used for relaxation calculations of two-phase potentials in a two-dimensional grid. From the potentials and the capillary pressure relationship, saturation and pressure distributions were calculated which trace cone growth with time. Predictions have been made for well producing histories both before and after core breakthrough. To check validity of the method, two-dimensional calculations have matched the coning behavior and produced water-oil ratio history of a laboratory sand-packed model. They have also matched the coning behavior of several producing wells, for which the calculations were compared with produced water or gas cuts and logs showing water or gas cone movements. INTRODUCTION The application of two-phase, two-dimensional calculations using ADIP to various reservoir flow problems has been described in the literature.1-3 When adapted for computer solution, this method has proved to be a powerful tool for simulating well and reservoir behavior. This paper discusses the method as applied to well coning calculations. Single-well and coning calculations comprise an especially difficult class of two-dimensional problems which require special techniques for computer calculation and determination of reservoir characteristics. Refs. 4 through 8 describe previous approaches to the coning problem. Several examples of water and gas coning calculations, including studies on both laboratory models and producing wells, are presented here. The two-dimensional method accounts realistically for the most critical parameters affecting coning behavior, including production rate, formation stratification, horizontal and vertical permeabilities, depth of well penetration, gravity and capillary forces. The method considers the different densities and viscosities of the two phases and the relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics of the rock and fluids. In addition to tracing cone growth in the vicinity of the wellbore, the method calculates the overall movement of the fluid interface throughout the well's drainage volume. Incompressible fluid flow is assumed to occur between the producing interval and the well's limit of drainage. Calculations can be made for the producing history both before and after cone breakthrough. A typical two-dimensional grid or array of blocks used to solve a coning problem contains about 400 blocks. The well's cylindrical drainage volume can be represented by about 20 radial subdivisions and the formation thickness by 20 vertical subdivisions. The grid spacing is normally smaller near the withdrawal interval to define the cone shape accurately. For this work we used an IBM 7074 digital computer having a core memory of 10,000 ten-digit words. A typical study, covering 5 to 10 years of well producing history, required from three to six hours of computing time. MATHEMATICAL SIMULATION OF CONING BEHAVIOR BASIC METHOD In coning calculations, the reservoir volume drained by the producing well is represented by a two-dimensional system of blocks as shown in Fig. 1 for water coning studies. The horizontal dimensions of the blocks increase with radial distance from the well axis in geometric progression, i.e., the block size is small near the wellbore and large near the well's drainage radius (re). Annual Meeting, Philadelphia May, 1873 THE Institute assembled in the room of the Board of Trade, Mercantile Library Building, on Tuesday evening, May 20th, at 8 o'clock P.M, Hon. W. D. Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. The Council reported, through the President, that the Institute had during the past year, held three meetings, in New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. The resignation of Herbert Hoover, Director General of Relief in Europe, from his post as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Food Administration Grain Corporation, in which capacity he had served for nearly two years; and the reorganization of the corporation under the name of the United States Grain Corporation, with Julius Barnes, United States Wheat Director, as its new head, took place at the annual meeting of the stockholders, held in New York, July 1. This action on the hart of Mr. Hoover is believed to be one of the first steps in his intended withdrawal from public service upon the conclusion of the war service of the various departments of the Food Administration, or as soon as they shall have been absorbed by other agencies. The Grain Corporation has been, for the past two years, a vast collection and distribution agency. Its function has been to assist in supplying to the Allies and the American Army and Navy large quantities of wheat, wheat flout, and other foods, with very little disturbance of American prices, and with such an even control of American distribution that reserves from one crop to another have been brought down to the lowest possible compass and without the dvelopment of actual scarcity anywhere in the United States. In the year just past, it carried on all the buying and the shipping for, the Belgian Relief Commission, until the commission retired on May 1 and the Belgian Government itself undertook its own overseas supplies. During the twenty-two months of its existence the corporation had disbursed $3,500,000,000 and collected an equal amount, selling for over-seas shipments commodities valued at $1,800,000,000, at an operating expense of about $3,250,000, or one-sixth of 1 per cent. During this time it has not lost a single dollar through fire loss.

UNQUESTIONABLY the Coal Division has never had a meeting in which so many outstanding technical papers were presented of immediate practical application to problems of personnel, mining, safety, preparation, combustion, and carbonization. Should there have been those present with the lingering idea that all that was needed for success in the coal industry was a strong back and a weak mind they must have had a rude awakening.

THIS paper is a general discussion of developments in our reverberatory smelting practice during the past five years. It deals briefly kith changes in furnace types ; changes in furnace feed ; de- crease in the amount of slag produced; relation of slag assays to copper loss in the slag; increase in the grade of matte and furnace capacities. The reverberatory is but one unit in the copper plant ancl 'any discussion of it must be considered with reference to the other units and to the plant as a whole. A change in the grade of concentrates at the concentrator puts an entirely new aspect on reverberatory smelting and, likewise, a change in the grade of matte at the reverberatory affects the rate and cost of converting. The introduction of differential flotation in 1927 had a very marked influence on all smelting operations and its effect will be noted

Grad, the abbreviation for Graduate Resume Accumulation and Distribution, is a computerized information retrieval system operated on behalf of college placement officers around the country by the non- profit College Placement Council, Inc. Grad is free to all engineering candidates (regardless of the number of years of experience) and is a means of getting together college alumni who are seeking new employment and prospective employers. Who is Qualified? Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or. in lieu of this, be accredited by a professional institute such as AIME as a full Member.

The University of Idaho Mining Society held a meeting on Oct. 23, and elected the following officers: President, Sam Bloom; Vice-President, Lloyd McDougall; Secty Treas, Jess W. Wade. Regular meetings are held on the first and third .Tuesdays of each month, for informal lectures and reports on technical subjects. The Mining Club of the University of Wisconsin has held four recent meetings On Oct. 17, sixteen new members were inducted, and a committee was appointed to buy a Liberty Bond. The second meeting, Oct. 31, was devoted to general entertainment, at the home of Professor McCaffery.
