Much has been said about the foreseeable exhaustion of known mineral reserves-particularly in the United States. It is claimed that we are about to become a have-not nation insofar as certain essential minerals are concerned; and in this respect our position is often contrasted with that of the world as a whole, largely because we have drawn so heavily on our domestic resources during the last fifty years. As a matter of fact, the difference is not great if one takes a reasonably long-term view of the situation. No one denies that nature endowed the United States richer in mineral resources than any other equal area. It is granted that we have skimmed the cream of many kinds of minerals; but in a free international trade in minerals it would not be many decades before the richer deposits-at least the deposits easy of discovery throughout the world would be depleted to much the same degree as those in the United States today. For it is a fact that the problem of satisfying the needs of our industrial society for minerals is fundamentally worldwide in scope. The singular and significant attribute to all minerals is that there is but a single crop. Forests can be grown, but mineral deposits can be replaced only by finding new ones. Thus, one of the vital tasks of the mining engineer, the petroleum engineer, and the geologist is to find these new mineral resources. Another task is to devise means and methods for the exploitation of, at costs that are economic, low-grade deposits and those deeply buried in the crust of the earth. The first need, however, is to find the deposits in the ground. If the assumptions of those who today fear an early exhaustion of all deposits are valid, the outlook for continued material and social progress is gloomy indeed. I take a more optimistic view, for it is my belief that vast new sources of needed minerals will have come to light before our known resources are gone. The real question is whether the outside layer of the crust of the earth that is accessible to engineers contains adequate mineral deposits; and whether engineers can find those deposits. The answer must be based on geologic science, geologic fact, and mining history. Every continent, and almost every country, has yielded minerals of industrial utility in substantial quantity. Mineral deposits are widespread. Geologists know the conditions that were favorable to the occurrence of ores and the types of rocks in which various kinds of ores may ordinarily be found. They know that such rocks occur over broad regions of the earth's surface. They also know that in large areas rocks that are potential carriers of ores are covered and concealed by material of entirely different character. Such cover may consist of lava flows, layers of volcanic ash, or beds of material washed down from the surrounding mountains. Sometimes those covers are thick, sometimes relatively thin. But men well-qualified to pass judgment are sure that concealed deposits, large in number and in size, exist close enough to the surface to make exploitation practical. Only by actual penetration of the surface can this contention be proved, but to conclude otherwise would be to ignore the laws of probability and to deny the over-all consistency of nature. The task of probing the crust of the earth to determine the location of these deposits, and to obtain some notion of their size and quality, poses serious problems. However, they should not be beyond human solution. Much more research must be done in analyzing and explaining the laws of ore deposition. New tools, in the shape of techniques and methods and of mechanical and electrical devices and instruments, must be developed. But no reasonable person can doubt that these objectives will be achieved. As the need becomes increasingly pressing, scientists and engineers will supply the imagination and the ingenuity that will provide the solution. The time and effort thus far devoted to the development of methods for locating hidden ore bodies have been pitifully meager. Energetic investigation of the subject of applied geophysics is essential to the success of the mineral industry, and I have no hesitation in predicting that effective techniques will be found and successfully applied. AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites, we have made a determination of the effects of cobalt on the activity of carbon in y iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Co alloys were equilibrated at 1000°C in controlled CO-C02 atmospheres, following the procedure of R. P. smith.' The 0.010-in.-thick samples were analyzed for carbon by microcombustion analysis2 to give a set of isoactivity curves. The latter were converted to activity-coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith's data' for the activity of carbon in pure iron measured in a CO-C02 mixture. Table I shows the composition of the base alloys used, while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In the notation of Wagner,' the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Eq. [I] adequately correlates the experimental points for those alloys which were prepared from electrolytic iron by arc-melting (2,4, and 7 pct Co). The results for the 10 pct Co alloy (supplied by Crucible Steel Co.) do not correlate with the others. In fact, the experimental points for this alloy correspond to an interaction parameter of It is possible that the interaction parameter is a function of concentration for large cobalt additions, but we are inclined to attribute the discrepancy to the presence of a significant amount of aluminum added to this alloy for deoxidation purposes (Table I). Preliminary measurements for the system Fe-C-A1 have indicated an interaction parameter of Which implies that the effect of aluminum in solution on the carbon activity is sixty times greater than the effect of an equal weight percentage of cobalt. These observations cast some doubt on the precision of the results of Chandhok, Hirth, and Dulis who used this same 10 pct alloy for their experiments, obtaining an interaction parameter of E = 2.2. There is considerable doubt as to the activity of a plane Fe-C system. Using a CH4-Ha mixture, Smith obtains cg = 6.1 for the effect of carbon on the activity of carbon in austenite, rather than the value of 8.9 given in Eq. [I]. The use of CHa-Ha mixtures has recently been questioned by Kaufman, Radcliff, and cohens who state that there is some possibility that other hydrocarbons are formed. Fortunately, the determination of the interaction parameter is not sensitive to the coefficient of Nc. For example, using the CHI-H2 results we obtain a value which is almost the same as that obtained using the CO-CO, results. The authors wish to thank Mr. E. J. DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. Just three years after researchers announced its development, Dravo is putting the finishing touches on a new $60-million Thiosorhic lime mine/kiln complex near Maysville, Ky. Electric utilities in western Pennsylvania and Ohio have already signed long-term contracts for over three-quarters of the projected 907 000-t/v (1-million-stpy) production. Thiosorbic lime, a flue gas desulfurizing agent, proved in industrial testing that at high emission levels (greater than 3000ppm SO2) it could be twice as effective in SO2 capture as conventional lime, while eliminating the major problem of scaling and plugging of scrubber equipment.

Production of anhydrous zirconium tetrachloride by direct chlor- ination of a zirconium oxide carbon mixture in a silica-brick-lined chlorinator is described. Theory and thermodynamics of reactions are discussed. A pilot-model chlorinator and full-scale production equipment are described and operating data are included. ANHYDROUS zirconium tetrachloride required as a starting material in the Kroll process for production of ductile zirconium has been produced in this country principally by chlorination of the carbide or "carbonitride" made by reduction of zircon sand concentrates with carbon in the arc furnace. This process and the equipment used have been fully described.'.' It is well known that zircon or badde-leyite ores may be chlorinated directly with chlorine in the presence of carbon, and this one-step approach would seem at first glance to be preferable to the two steps involved in the carbide-chloride operation. As previously discussed1 considerations leading to adoption of the longer process were: 1—Chlorination of the carbide proceeds rapidly at temperatures below 500°C, whereas temperatures above 900°C were considered necessary for chlorination of zircon-carbon mixtures. 2—The highly exothermic nature of the carbide-chlorine reaction makes it self-sustaining, while heat must be supplied continuously in direct chlorination of the ore. 3—Silicon was thought to be chlorinated along with zirconium in the direct chlorination of zircon, leading to high chlorine consumption. In production of carbide in the arc furnace, silicon is driven off as silicon monoxide and does not enter the chlorinator. 4—For efficient direct chlorination, the ore must be finely ground and intimately mixed with carbon, and the mixture briquetted. 5—Direct chlorination requires a much larger chlorinator for a given production capacity than chlorination of carbide. Recently it has become necessary to produce large quantities of zirconium metal from a chemically purified zirconium oxide. Since the cost of the latter is high, the relatively high losses encountered in production of carbide in the arc furnace could not be tolerated, and a graphite resistor furnace5 was developed for production of carbide, which was then chlorinated in equipment previously used for chlorinating arc-furnace carbide. This method of operation was quite satisfactory, and losses in the carbid-ing step were minimized. However, operating costs were relatively high, and the process did not lend itself particularly well to large-scale operation because of the multiplicity of small units required and the hand labor needed to load, unload, and maintain the furnaces. To chlorinate the carbide, a vertical-shaft chlorinator was used in which the charge was heated with a central split graphite-rod resistor.' Operation of this chlorinator was somewhat less satisfactory with the resistor furnace carbide than it had been with the arc-furnace carbide due, principally, to the differences in physical properties of the carbide. The arc-furnace carbide is obtained as a fused metallic-appearing mass which can be crushed to -1/4 in. with production of a minimum of fines, whereas the resistor-furnace product is lightly sintered and produces a large proportion of fines in crushing and handling. These fines tend to pack in the chlorinator and promote channeling. which results in poor chlorine efficiency and low capacity. Data based on production of 22,000 lb of chloride from resistor-furnace carbide in this equipment are shown in Table I. Necessity for increasing production of chloride from about 2,000 to 15,000 lb per week led to further investigation of possible methods for direct chlorination of the oxide or oxide-carbon mixtures. Direct chlorination of the pure oxide presents much less difficulty than chlorination of zircon sand or oxide ores. The oxide is easily ground to —200 mesh, and no silica is present to cause excessive consumption of chlorine or contamination of the product. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the critical pressures of gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems of the type encountered in gas and solvent injection processes. Experimental data from 14 systems were used to develop the correlation which expresses critical pressure as a function of composition, C7+ mol weight, and C7+ characterization factor. Critical pressures predicted by the correlation for the 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems have an average deviation of 2.8 per cent of the experimental values. The correlation war used to study a wide variety of other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature whose critical conditions are in the range of interest in oil recovery work (100 to 280F and 2,000 to 6,000 psia). Critical pressures predicted by the correlation had an average deviation, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 5 per cent for 20 miscellaneous mixtures from the literature, and 6.4 per cent for I7 methane-butane-decane mixtures reported by Sage and Lucey. INTRODUCTION Predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures is an important part of phase behavior calculations. If the critical point can be predicted for a specific mixture, the separation between the bubble-point and dew-point regions will be defined, and physical properties of the mixture can be calculated by using the principle of corresponding states. Numerous correlations for predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures have been published. Six of these correlationsl-8 were for light hydrocarbons, and two correlations7,8 ere for high boiling-point petroleum distillates. Organick9 And Eilerts" presented correlations which combined the published data from both light and heavy mixtures, and these correlations became the only available methods for predicting critical pressures for wide boiling range mixtures. In the course of the authors' work on secondary recovery by gas and solvent injection, experimental data were obtained for 14 mixtures of dry gas, ethane-propane-butane solvents, and various reservoir oils. The critical pressures and critical temperatures of these gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems were in the range of 1,900 to 4,800 psia and 180 to 265F. The critical pressures predicted for the 14 mixtures by the correlations of Organick and Eilerts had an average deviation from the measured values of about 13 per cent. The authors felt that it was necessary to develop a better correlation for engineering calculations and the resultant correlation, which is presented on Figs. 1 and 2, predicts the critical pressures of the 14 mixtures with an average deviation of 2.8 per cent. The validity of the correlation was tested by applying the correlation to other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature. This subject is discussed later in the paper. The authors feel that there is also a need for an improved critical temperature correlation for gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems. However, developing a critical temperature correlation is a significant study in itself and is not included in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL DATA The compositions and critical points obtained by the authors for 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil mixtures are shown on Table 1. The methane concentrations in these mixtures varied from 20 to 63 mol per cent. The intermediate hydrocarbon group, consisting of ethane, propane, and butane, varied from 20 to 64 mol per cent, and the concentration of the C,, fraction from 10 to 20 mol per cent. The physical properties of the C,, fraction covered the range from light, paraffinic, nonasphaltic (Mixtures 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) to heavy, aromatic, and asphaltic (Mixtures 13 and 14).

Rock engineering involves uncertainties which are large and difficult to quantify. The traditional design approach to these uncertain- ties has been conservatism, and has been satisfactory to the extent that failure rates are reasonably small. Yet, a price is paid for conservatism, and that price is not always small. Today, reliability and risk analysis are finding use in rock engineering. The introduction of such methods, usually under the name 'probabilistic design,' is controverisal. However, if the jingoism of both sizes in this controversy is stripped away, it appears that new insights about uncertainty in rock engineering are emerging.

A new method is proposed to obtain automatically an unbiased estimate of the interdendritic spacing A. It is shown that the structure can be built by a random distribution of a rectangular basic unit. The usual definition of the interdendritic spacing yields a value 1 which, coupled with A, gives the shape of the basic rectangular unit. A study of the relationship between dendrite arm spacing and solidification rate was conducted as a part of a research program on dendritic solidification. For any comparison between theory and experiments to be meaningful, it is necessary to measure reproducible and clearly defined spacings. Fig. 1 shows clearly that even in a fairly simple structure such measurements are difficult. if we compare photos (a) and (b), we can hardly assess which one shows the larger spacing. Moreover, the quantity to be measured can be defined in several ways. On a small scale, dendrites seem to be distributed in a very regular and ordered way. However, on a larger scale, this regularity no longer exists. The usual way to measure spacings is to pick up some rows of dendrite stalks; such measurements are obviously biased since less orderly regions are not taken into account. A more objective method is to section the picture with randomly oriented straight lines and average the measured interdendritic spacings. The purpose of this paper is to show that such measurements, which can be conducted automatically, yield objective and reproducible results which are directly related to characteristic features of the dendritic structure. I) THEORETICAL ANALYSIS 1-1) Mathematical Morphology and Function of Co-variance. Matheronl and Serra2 enlarced- the definition and geometrical meaning of the notion of covariance to encompass problems in mathematical morphology. A brief review of part of their theory can be stated as follows. THE "miracle of production." which was such an essential element in winning the European war, was nowhere more in evidence than in our Western States. In shipbuilding alone the Pacific Coast States -et a mark never before equaled, and in production of war goods of many kinds, both Rocky Mountain and Coast States accomplished more than their proportionate share if measured by population standards. This was only possible because of the building of immense new plants of many types, largely financed with Government money. Their operation has built up payrolls in the West and brought a measure of prosperity which Westerners are naturally anxious to have made permanent. A widespread doubt obtains, however, throughout the nation and even in the Western States themselves, as to whether, and if so to what extent, this may prove possible. The question has been raised as to whether the national treasury has not been raided to stock the Western ranges with a voracious breed of white elephant .

ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust- collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market out- lets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk so-ton lots direct to the consumer. POTENTIAL MARKETS FOR FINE- MESH COAL DUST In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. To be more specific, a few of the better known operations of this type must include: colloidal-fuel plants, briquetting plants, “sea coal” distributing plants, water-purification plants and obviously, pow-

The Institute assembled in the room of the Board of Trade, Mercantile Library Building, on Tuesday evening, May 20th, at 8 o'clock P.M, Hon. W. D. Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. The Council reported, through the President, that the Institute had during' the past year, held three meetings, in New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. DATA pertaining to pipe line flow for both oil and gas in horizontal or nearly horizontal pipe lines are both extensive and accurate. However, the pipe formulas used to determine pressure drop for flowing fluids (liquids and gases) under conditions of horizontal flow are not generally applicable to flowing oil and/or gas wells. Except for some data developed in small laboratory set-ups, little or no information was available concerning flow of oil and gas mixtures in vertical pipes, when, in 1928, the writer began the development of a method for computing pressure drops in the pipes of flowing oil wells, as outlined in this paper. In 1929, Uren1 presented some findings based on laboratory experi-ments in which vertical flow of an extremely heavy crude oil was induced, by means of air through a 2-in. pipe, 41 ft. long. The friction factors derived from the experiment, as well as values for pressure drop per 100 ft., are not believed satisfactory in their application to flow problems in the field. Versluys,2 also in 1929, presented a mathematical development of the theory of flowing oil wells, and in 1930, gave a companion paper3 setting forth some principles governing the choice of length and diameter of tubing in oil wells. Since the termination of the study presented in this paper, another. valuable contribution pertaining to the problem, of vertical flow was made by Moore and Wilde.4 Although there were writings dealing with the principles of the gas-lift, a search of the available literature indicated that specific information on vertical flow was lacking with the exception of the writings of Uren, Versluys, and Moore and Wilde, to which reference .has been made.

When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

The National Mine Health and Safety Academy near Beckley, W. Va., is dedicated to reducing accidents and improving health conditions in the mining industry through education and training. Though this basic mission remains unchanged, the Academy now serves a much broader mining community than it did when established in the late 1960s. From its original emphasis on training federal coal, metal, and nonmetal mine safety inspectors, the Academy has expanded its programs to reach mining industry and labor representatives, state agency employees, and university students taking mining-related courses. The Academy's resident programs, short courses, seminars, and continuing education courses cover a wide range of subjects and various experience levels, but all have been developed with one idea in mind - to reduce accidents and health hazards through education and training of the widest possible audience.

Various estimates have been made as 60 the percentage of oil left in a field after the wells have become so small that it is no longer practical to produce them. Engineers have given the matter much study and can substantiate their figures by data taken from fields from the Appalachians to California. The average oil sand has a porosity of about 20 per cent., which gives a capacity per acre-foot of approximately 1500 bbl. The sand thickness in Oklahoma pools averages 20 ft. With 20 per cent, porosity and a 20-ft. sand thickness, the capacity per acre is 30,000 bbl., yet these pools will seldom yield more than 5000 bbl. to the acre. These figures gupport the theory that at least 50 per cent. of the oil remains in a sand after all known methods to recover it have been used. Certainly we can never recover all the oil, unless in years to come oil becomes so rare and yet so necessary that the price will justify sinking shafts into the abandoned fields and regular mining methods of drifting and stoping. However, with improved methods of production and conservation of the natural agencies of expulsion, we should be able to increase recovery. It is with this in mind that this paper, relating to the effect of back pressure on wells, is presented. Except in the fields where production is caused by hydrostatic pressure, the chief agency for getting oil out of the sand into the hole is the gas that occurs with the oil. After the pressure has declined, probably gravity also is a factor, but not an important one. With a given amount of oil in a sand and a given amount of gas occurring with the oil, the ratio of gas volume per barrel of oil is the key to the ultimate recovery from that sand. Our efforts should be along lines that will lower this ratio and make the gas, the agency given us by nature, do its work better and yield more of the oil, of which it is a part. T. E. Twitchell: While I was attending St. Albans High School, my uncle, who had been the American Consul in Kingston, Ontario, for many years, told me of the excellent mining school there. He also introduced me to a Canadian mining engineer who sparked my interest in mining by noting the possibility of achieving personal success without always being under salary. Well, that appealed to me, so I applied to the Kingston School of Mines at Queen's University.

It is situated at College, near Fairbanks, Alaska, approximately on the 65th parallel of latitude, and therefore just south of the Arctic Circle. It is farther north than Hudson Bay, and in about the same latitude as southern Greenland.
