DESPITE the intense preoccupation of most of those members connected with the mining, concentration, and reduction of iron ores, the luncheon and subsequent technical session of the Eastern Magnetite Committee were exceedingly well attended. Many of the older faces were absent, but new ones took their places. More than sixty, all told, took in the technical session. Chairman Crockett opened the session by calling upon Meredith E. Johnson, whose paper, with its accompanying graph, was in reality a comprehensive historical review of iron mining from colonial days to the end of 1941. with some notes on current expansion which indicates that New Jersey is destined to become a still more important. factor in the production of magnetite ores.

SEVERAL methods are available for determining pole figures by X-ray means.' The earlier film methods have been replaced by techniques in which the intensities are measured by Geiger counters on an X-ray diffractometerZm7. These methods utilize either flat transmission or reflection samples,214°8 cylindrical specimens,3 or spherical specimens.7 A single transmission or reflection sample will not yield information over the complete pole figure. The cylindrical specimens suggested by Nortod and the spherical specimen of Jetter and Borie7 have the advantage of allowing the whole pole figure to be obtained without any corrections to the intensity for absorption, There is a lower limit to the size of sheet which can be conveniently studied, however, and sample preparation can be rather tedious. Probably the most common method today for determining the complete pole figure is that developed by Schulz. A flat reflection sample is used for determining the pole figure from the center out to about 70". Because of the geometry of the system used, little or no correction for absorption or irradiated volume is necessary.4'6 A separate transmission sample is used for the region near the edge of the pole figure. This procedure requires two separate samples, one of which must be a thin carefully-prepared transmission sample. Furthermore, since the reflection and transmission data are in different arbitrary intensity units, a region of overlap must be obtained, and the intensity data from one set of measurements converted to units of the other. These are serious disadvantages of this method, and they point out the need for a simplified procedure. Since the reflection technique can be used for planes whose normals lie up to about 70° from the sample surface normal, it is apparent that a complete pole figure can be obtained by reflection alone if sample surfaces are cut at oblique angles to the rolling plane Specifically, if a rolled sample is cut so that the normal to the surface formed lies equidistant (54" 44') from the rolling plane normal, rolling direction, and transverse direction, then complete information for one quadrant of the pole figure can be obtained by reflection from the surface. Fig. 1 shows this oblique surface, as well as the position of the pole of this surface in the pole figure. When a surface has been cut oblique to the rolling plane, the standard polar stereographic net is inconvenient to use, and it would be more desirable to have the center of the net coincide with the pole of the oblique plane. Fig. 2 shows such a net, where the center has been offset 54' 44' to correspond to a specimen cut as in Fig. 1. This net was in effect obtained by rotating a standard polar stereographic net 54" 44' with the help of a Wulff net. With the experimental setup used. a sample can be cut from plate of 1/2-in. thickness or br Gen- erally thinner sheet is under investigation, and a composite specimen must be used. A convenient procedure has been to bond together, using epoxy resin, sufficient sheets to form a cube. These are clamped in a vise, and when dry, the whole vise is rotated and a flat surface ground at the required angle. The sample is then mounted inside a larger steel ring using Koldmount, the backside ground flat and parallel to the approximate desired thickness. The sample is then polished and etched to remove any effects of cold working during grinding. With this method only one quadrant of the pole figure is obtained. Often pole figures show symmetry around the rolling and transverse directions, and any slight asymmetry is due to scatter. Should the pole figure not be symmetrical, four oblique surfaces, corresponding to the four quadrants of the pole figure, would have to be examined. In most cases there is symmetry at least around the rolling direction, which reduces to two the number of quadrants to be investigated. For many purposes all that is required is an average polefigure for the four quadrants. This canreadilybe obtained with composite specimens of sheet material, where sheets Corresponding to each of the four quadrants can be intermixed. The four quadrants can be obtained by considering sheet in the normal position, and by rotatiolls of 180" around the sheet normal, the rolling direction, and the transverse direction. If desired, the whole thickness of the sheet can be used, yielding an average of the surface and interior textures; or the surface material can be removed from each sheet, resulting in a pole figure for the center alone. Eugene S. Meieran of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has independently developed the same method. His results, adapted to a pole figure goniometer with a specimen spiraler, will be described in another publication.

BEFORE me is a colored mining-claim map of the productive portion of the Robinson Mining district-sometimes called the Ruth-Kimberly area-that lies a few miles west of Ely, Nevada. It covers an area of 20 sq mi and at the end of 1954 had produced just under 2,000,000 tons of copper and about 2,000,000 oz of gold as a by-product. The three principal colors on the map and the meaning of each are: Red -Property of the Nevada Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, formerly known as the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. Yellow -Property of the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation. Green --Consolidated Coppermines property under lease to Nevada Mines. The striking feature of the map is the crazy-quilt intermingling of the colors and the tendency of property lines to intersect ore bodies. For example, the westerly one-fourth of Nevada Mines' Copper Flat pit, source of most of the ore,up to date, is in Coppermines property. Nearly half of Nevada Mines' Veteran pit is on leased claims; and Nevada's new Deep Ruth shaft is on a right of way on ground originally owned by Coppermines. On the other hand, the original Ruth underground mine and the new Kimbley pit are on Nevada Mines property; and the Morris and Brooks opencut mines, the most important of Cop-

Previous laboratory studies have demonstrated that the injection of small quantities of reverse wetting agents during water displacement can increase oil recovery from unconsolidated porous media.9 In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to determine more fully the effects of reverse wetting treatments and to clarify the mechanism by which increased oil recovery is effected. Water-oil displacements were performed in beds of 140-200 mesh silica sand. Hexylamine slugs (injected after 0.25 pore volume of water throughput), when adequate in size and concentration, were effective in promoting additional oil recovery. Their effectiveness increased with the quantity of amine injected. However, slugs of sufficient size and concentration to stimulate oil production at water flow rates of 34 ft/day did not do so at 4 ft/day. Visual studies in a glass grid micromodel have shown that the stimulation of oil production, via ayueous hexylamine, is a result of transient changes in the oil wettability of the pore walls. if the amine slug is of sufficient size and concentration to induce significant changes in the adhesion-tension, large continuous oil masses will be formed. if the superficial water velocity is high enough to result in rapid desorption of the amine, a favorable "wettobility gradient" may be established across the masses; under such conditions, high oil mobility is observed, and increased oil recovery results. INTRODUCTION It is generally agreed that the efficiency of oil displacement by water in porous media is limited in part by capillary forces which cause the retention of isolated masses of oil — resulting in the so-called "irreducible minimum oil saturation". Recent estimates10 indicate that there are about 220 billion bbl of petroleum in United States reservoirs which are not economically recoverable with present techniques (such as water flooding). This amounts to almost five times the known recoverable reserves. It has been recognized for some time that a suitable alteration in the water-oil interfacial tension and/or the contact angle, as measured between the water-oil interface and the solid surface, should result in better displacement efficiency. Surface active agents can be used as interfacial tension depressants to accomplish this objective,1,2,7 but unfortunately, the additional oil recovery is seldom commensurate with the treatment cost. In contrast to interfacial tension depressants, the effect of contact angle alterations on water-oil displacements has received relatively little attention in the literature. It is known that the wettability affects the displacement process.3,4,11 Displacements in water-wet systems generally result in lower residual oil saturations than those in oil-wet systems. The effect of "'transient" wettability alterations concurrent with the displacement process have been investigated by Wagner, Leach and coworkers,4,11 wherein it has been demonstrated that the establishment of water-wet conditions during water flooding of oil-wet, oil-saturated porous media is accompanied by significant increase in oil displacement efficiency. Michaels and Timminss studied the effects of transient contact angle alterations resulting from chromatographic transport of reverse wetting agents through unconsolidated sand. It was demonstrated that chromatographic transport of short-chain (C4 through C8) primary aliphatic amines can improve oil recovery and that the recovery increases with the quantity of amine injected (i.e., with either the amine concentration or the volume of the slug injected). Circumstantial evidence indicated that the increased displacement efficiency resulted primarily from transient changes in wettability of the porous medium. In the Present investigation. additional information has been obtained on the effects of reverse wetting treatments and the mechanism by which increased oil recovery is accomplished. Twelve years ago, the Director of the United States Geological Survey addressed to the Secretary of the Interior a letter calling attention to the government's need for liquid fuel for naval use and pointing out that the rate of increase in demand was more rapid than the increase in production.' This letter, in a way, inaugurated the policy of public oil-land withdrawals, which was well founded in its primary purpose of protecting the oil industry and highly desirable in its immediate effect of checking the over-development of that day in California. Unfortunately, however, through delays in legislation, this policy may be regarded now as having outlived both its intent and its usefulness. In 1908, the country's production of oil was 178,500,000 bbl., and there was a surplus above consumption of more than 20,000,000 bbl. available to go into storage. In 1918, 10 years later, the oil wells of the United States yielded 356,000,000 bb1.—nearly twice the yield of 1908—but to meet the demands of the increased consumption more than 24,000,000 bbl. had to be drawn from storage. Nor is this all of the brief comparison. In 1918, our excess of imports over exports of crude petroleum was nearly 33,000,000 bbl. whereas in 1908 we exported 3,500,000 bbl., which was net, as we had not begun to import Mexican oil. In this period, the annual fuel-oil consumption of the railroads alone has increased from 16,871,000 to 36,714,000 bbl.; the annual gasoline production from 540,000,000 gal. to 3,500,000,000 gal. This record may be taken not only as justifying the earlier appeal for Federal action, but as warranting deliberate attention to the oil problem of today. Need of Future Supply The position of the United States in regard to oil can best be characterized as precarious. Using more than one-third of a billion barrels a year, we are drawing not only from the underground pools but also from storage, and both of these supplies are limited. In 1918, the contribu-

A school grows big only as its usefulness increases and it will shrink rapidly if inefficient. Usefulness must be recorded in terms of service within the economic structure of the Commonwealth. Under this premise, modern mineral industries colleges must recognize and give equal significance to three interrelated, interdependent functions of service: namely, (1) resident instruction, on both the undergraduate and graduate levels; (2) research under an experiment station plan; and (3) extension training under three classifications, class instruction, correspondence instruction, and informal instruction. To train potential leaders for the mineral kingdom, to discover and teach new truths is only half of the job. Through extension training, equal attention must be given to the on-job, vocational-technical, upgrading of skilled workers on the production line. Similar to the School of Agriculture, the School of Mineral Industries is the only one in the Commonwealth offering the three functions of service in each of the subject-matter fields in mineral arts and sciences. The functions of service must be based on the modern conception of mineral conservation (Fig. 12). Conservation of minerals differs from conservation of natural resources in general because man must find new mineral deposits and excel the geologic forces of nature in processes of concentration. The basic density equation originally dericed ' to predict the increase in density of a compact of spherical particles with the progressive deformation at the points of contact has been further modified to include the yield strength of the material. This has been done by assuming that the contact areas grow to stable sizes under a fixed stress which is equal to three times the yield strength. The final equation has the form: where Do and D me the initial and final bulk densities of the compact, u is the applied pressure, and Y is the yield strength of the material. This equation was tested with the data obtained on spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The calculated yield strength t~alues for lead and sapphire are within the range of values reported in the literature. A few of the earliest hot pressing models proposed to explain the mechanism by Murray, Livey, and williams2 and then by McClelland3 are based on a plastic flow mechanism. However, more recent investigations suggest that the overall densification process is a combination of several mechanisms, such as particle rearrangement, fragmentation, plastic flow, and stress-enhanced diffusional creep. While fragmentation and particle rearrangement are considered to be responsible for the densification in the early stages,"475 it has been concluded that the final stages of hot pressing are controlled by stress-enhanced diffusional creep.516 The manner in which the densification takes place, i.e., by fragmentation, particle rearrangement, plastic flow, or stress-enhanced diffusional creep, would depend upon the type of material, the temperature, and the stress level used during the hot-pressing experiments. Metal compacts can be expected to have a much greater contribution from plastic flow than ceramic oxides. Also, plastic flow would be a significant contributing factor to densification at high temperatures and high stresses. Most of these works, directed towards elucidation of densification mechanism, have dealt with kinetics of the process. The results of most of the authors vary from one another and they have proposed either new empirical or semiempirical equations to fit their data. The densification rate was found to vary with the type of the powder, shape and size of the powder, initial packing density of the compact, and a few other factors such as rate of heating, pressure, and so forth. Beyond the initial stages, the densification process has been considered to be as time-dependent flow, controlled by a diffusional process, e.g., Nabarro-Herring creep. Palm our, Bradley, and johnson' have attempted to use modified creep rate equations to interpret the data of densification under hot-pressing conditions. Beyond the initial stages, however, the densification would be controlled by a process depending upon the temperature, pressure, and size of the powders. It is the authors' belief that such densification cannot be exclusively controlled by a single process and so attempts should be made to study some observable phenomenon like microstructure, yield strength, and so forth. The emphasis of this work has been toward studying the densification problem from a more fundamental point of view. Some of the principal variables, like initial packing density, mode of packing, and size of the powders, have been controlled to a great extent. The total strain produced on pressure application (instantaneous) in such a case can be considered to be due to plastic and elastic deformation. The elastic component of the strain can be determined by decreasing the load to the initial value. The strain remaining then can be correlated with the contact areas produced by deformation and the corresponding applied load. In a previous paper,' the possible deformation behavior of spheres in a compact has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally tested. The change in contact area radius a relative to the particle radius R was related to the bulk density and the bulk strain for simple and systematic modes of packing. Tt was found that a density equation relating the above parameters can be represented by: where D and Do are the bulk densities of the compact at any value of a/R and a/R = 0, respectively. This basic equation should hold for any material as it was derived from geometrical considerations alone. An attempt has been made in this work to include the yield strength in the above density equation, so that a knowledge of the properties of any material can be used in predicting the densification behavior during the hot-pressing process. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATTONS The deformation of two spheres in contact under a static load can be compared to the deformation occurring between a hard spherical indentor and the flat face of a softer metal. Tt has been shown theoretically by both ~encky~ and lshlinskyg and experimentally by ~abor" that, for a material incapable of appreciable work hardening, the mean pressure required to produce plastic yielding (for deformation occurring between flat face and a hemispherical indentor) is approximately equal to three times the elastic limit, Y, of the material (in tension or compression experiments). Tabor has further observed that the same relationship is valid in the case of work-hardening materials, if the elastic limit at the edge of the indenta-

Although determining and controlling specific gravity of operating medium in a heavy-media plant manually presents no problem, there are advantages to automatic recording and control. The two installations discussed employ the usual method of measurement. Pneumatic control with band control and reset features is used to regulate dilution water and hence specific gravity. Difficulties have been mechanical in nature and associated with obtaining a proper I sample and maintaining tight air connections in bubble-tube piping:

Y.:—Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally discovered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit eesentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection.

An Interstate Mining Commission organized in Raleigh, N. C., on April 27 still has no offices, no budget and only four members, but it could spell the beginning of the end for the state-to-state environmental control variations that have lately been con- founding the mining industry. Established by Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, the new organization is committed to protecting land, water and other resources through improved strip and other mining practices. In pursuit of this end, it has broad authority to study all mining activities affecting the environment and to recommend improvements in mining practices and in laws regulating the mining industry. The Startup The Commission was created under an interstate Mining Compact enacted in the 1960's by the legislatures of the four member states. According to the rules of this Compact, the Commissioners in the new organization are, ex officio, the governors of the member states-namely, Chairman Louie B. Nunn (Ky.), Vice Chairman Robert W. Scott (N.C.), David Hall (Okla.) and Milton J. Shapp (Pa.). Each Commissioner, however, must appoint an advisory body to counsel him in matters relating to Commission business and delegate one member of this body to act as his alternate. Each advisory body must include representatives of mining, conservation and other public and private interests.

INVESTIGATORS in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial tempera-tures; i. e., 1000° to 1800° C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree.

It is a rare work of art that attains the proportions of a major construction project. One instance of such a phenomenon is Bartholdi's Miss Liberty, which was designed and built section by section in Paris and then erected in New York Harbor. Another is Borglum's massive presidential quartet hewn from the granite of Mount Rushmore. Now, however, there is a new monument in the making which will completely dwarf all others. The sculptor of this supercolossus is Korczak Ziolkowski, a colorful, bearded genius who assisted Borglum on Mount Rushmore and is now carving his own granite masterpiece from Thunderhead Mountain near Custer, S. D., just ten crow-flight miles away from Rushmore.

Selected technological developments applicable to lead and zinc mineral processing and changes in Australian concentration practices made since 1770 are reviewed. Laboratory and pilot plant studies of two new ores have been conducted since 1770. These have resulted in final flowsheet proposals which are described. New production capacity since IT0 has been based on plant expansion or the retreatment of oxidised tailings from plants operating pre-1940ts. Major developments in existing plants have come from the application of computer control to crushing, grinding and flotation and the installation of on-stream analysis systems. Flowsheet configurations have been altered in a number of plants. Selected research topics applicable to lead and zinc processing are also reviewed.

THE B-Ni system was chosen for this study because of the great interest being shown in boron-fiber-strengthened composite materials. Boron fibers were obtained from Texaco Experiment, Inc. They average 4.2 mils in diam with a 0.5-mil tungsten wire in the center. In order to make the diffusion couple, the fibers were included in the nickel matrix by electroforming. The samples were placed in a preheated furnace for the desired temperature and length of time. Sectioning and polishing the samples revealed concentric rings as shown in Fig. 1. The average penetration distance, X, was calculated by measuring the radius of the second phase (the white shell in Fig. 1) and subtracting the original radius.
