The object of this study is to investigate the effect of prior tensile strain on the fracture stress of a metal. This is done in a theoretical manner starting from the point of view developed by the author in his thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals. The results are compared with experimental findings and a rational interpretation is given to work that shows the variation of fracture stress with prior tensile strain. Theory op Fracture In the thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals developed earlier,' it was shown that a critical strain energy per unit volume exists. This is characteristic of the material and may be calculated from basic thermodynamic data. When the area under the flow curve reaches this characteristic value, fracture occurs. The general criterion for fracture is expressed in the form « ± u. = JLJW/V [r] where L, is the latent heat of melting of the unit volume, AV/V is the ratio of the change in volume of the unit volume to the original unit volume on passing from the solid to the liquid state, uo is an initial energy density, and J is a conversion factor, which changes energy from heat to mechanical units. As a first approximation, it will he assumed that the stress-strain curve is the straight line that extends from the point of maximum load onward, extrapolated back to the axis of zero strain, for example, line AC of Fig. I. If the point of intersection of the straight line with the axis of zero strain is represented by v., and the slope of the straight line is p, the analytic form of the flow curve is a = (To + pd [2] and the strain energy per unit volume evaluated from Jud6 becomes (u,6 + pa2/2). When this latter term reaches the critical value JLbVIV (designated hereafter by M), it is assumed that fracture occurs. This leads to the following expression for the fracture stress: a; = V«r.2 + iMp [3] The strain at fracture may be calculated from Eqs 2 and 3. It is assumed in this paper that the initial energy density is either zero or that it may be neglected. Furthermore, the complicated states of stress and of strain existing in the necked region of the tensile specimen after "necking" has occurred will also be neglected for the present, so that average conditions will be assumed to prevail. After showing continued and very satisfactory progress until the close of 1931, the oil industry of the Soviet, Union experienced very great difficulties, and since 1932 has not only failed to complete its assigned quotas but has fallen farther and farther behind them, and in fact during 1932 and 1933 Russian production has been below production in 1931. In 1934 the total crude oil production of 169,200,000 bbl. exceeded that of the former peak year, 1931, when 156,100,000 bbl. were produced. The production during 1934 amounted to 78.65 per cent of the plan. The failure to complete the plan has been due to the inability of the oil trusts to develop new fields; the fields that have been producing since 1917 still account for between 75 to 80 per cent of total production. The failure of the Soviet Government to develop new fields has been due to unsatisfactory organization of the geological work, to the extremely slow drilling of wells and their exploitation, and to the very much delayed development of the few areas that have been discovered. The official overestimation of the proven reserves of the country has undoubtedly been an important factor in giving the Soviet industry too much confidence when actually such reserves have been small. The official Soviet estimate of proven reserves of Russia is now placed at 21,000,000,000, bbl., while in fact such reserves, if estimated on a conservative basis, do not exceed 4,200,000,000 bbl., as will be shown later in this review. The refinery branch of the industry also showed unsatisfactory results with a recovery of gasoline, both straight-run and cracked, of only some 16 per cent of the total runs to stills. In fact, the showing of the refineries has been so unsatisfactory that the exports of gasoline have been greatly curtailed from 1933 to 1934, dropping to 10,000,000 bbl. in 1934 from 12,230,000 bbl. in 1933. With the indicated increase in domestic demand, together with but slightly increased refining capacity, the volume of available gasoline for export probably will be reduced to about 6,000,000 bbl. during 1935. Research and Development, once considered a luxury item only for well-heeled companies, has in the last two decades come into its own as a vital contributor to the fortunes of electronic, automotive, chemical and aerospace firms. In terms of money and talent poured into research, the mining industry is still far behind those industries. Although the U.S. Bureau of Mines, plus various mining and manufacturing firms and universities have made notable contributions to mining technology, the historical pattern of mining R&D shows a heavy reliance on the results of research in other industries. It is difficult to tell whether this pattern will change significantly in the future, but there is evidence of a growing awareness by mining officials that greater R&D efforts are going to be required not only to meet the nebulous demands of tomorrow's world but to meet the ever-present, mounting pressures being generated by "intra-metals" and "inter-materials" competition.

The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center's 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."' The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.

As part of the mine permitting process as delegated by the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977 the regulatory authority must assess the probable hydrologic consequences and cumulative hydrologic impacts of surf ace mining. The U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM), in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment and ENCORE Systems Inc., has developed a user friendly groundwater model that is capable of predicting the effects of surface mining on groundwater quality and quantity. The model is a variation of the Prickett-Lonnquist model which has been modified to be specifically applicable to surface mine applications. This model is presently being used by OSM, the states, and industry to determine mining impacts on groundwater resources. The model is designed for use by the hydrologist with minimal computer training. The model accounts for multiple pumping wells, injection wells, multiple mine pits, and mine pit movement through time. This paper presents an example of how the model may be used in permit application review and how the model can be used by industry to simplify permit preparation.

The Bryan Mound salt dome in Freeport, Texas, has some of the largest and oldest solution caverns in the U.S. There are a total of five caverns of varying shapes and sizes randomly distributed throughout the salt dome. When the caverns were converted from a brine production to an oil storage operation, the effects on long-term stability of the caverns and inter-cavern behavior were analyzed to evaluate the future safety of the storage operation. The analysis was based on a worst-possible-case scenario, including accidental wellhead pressure loss. The impact of this pressure loss upon the thinnest partition between the two closest caverns was analyzed, using a case example of storing lightest weight LPG, thereby creating maximum differential pressures between these two caverns. The finite element method with the REM computer code was utilized for this analysis. Results of the analysis illustrate the basic mechanisms of the long-term behavior of the multiple caverns in the LPG storage operation.

In talking with a good many people, I have discovered that concrete is being used A good deal for a wide variety of oils ranging from 14° to as high as 40° Bé., especially, by some of the western railroads:, If any member has had experience, in storing gasoline in concrete, I should like to learn of it. KNAPP, Ardmore Pa.).-I have had considerable experience in building masonry tanks for gas Holders. I do not believe it is possible to build a concrete or masonry tank of any kind. With hydraulic cement, mortar, which will be absolutely water-tight, unless the bottom and inner wall, after completion are waterproofed with some impervious material. The same will be true of oil tanks, the bottom and inner face of which must be made impervious to oil. Masonry tanks are intended to be sunk in the ground. All that the wall of the tank then amounts to is a retaining wall to keep the excavation in shape and to receive an impervious coating. The bottom of, a; tank, when empty, must be protected by a relief valve from any hydraulic: pressure acting from below. At ordinary prices, for sheets, a tank 100 ft. diam by 20 ft. deep can be built of steel much quicker and cheaper than of masonry. Several years, ago I saw very large oil storage tank under construction in California the bottom and sides being concrete. The sides were, sloped at about the single of repose for the material excavated: If you build a steel oil tank, you can get. .men for the work who do nothing else, and you, are likely to get a satisfactory job; but if you wish to build a concrete or masonry tank it is almost: impossible to find men skilled in building absolutely water-tight masonry Work. A three ton per day blast furnace using blast temperatures up to 2200°F was operated to recover manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The spiegel product containing 12 to 24 pct Mn was blown in a basic converter to high manganese oxide slag as described in the paper which follows this one. HE steel industry, which uses over 900,000 short tons of contained manganese yearly, depends on the maintenance of supplies of manganese from foreign sources such as India, Gold Coast, and Union of South Africa. Domestic ores furnish less than 10 pct of the yearly requirements of metallurgical ores and, unfortunately, the United States has no large, or even moderate, grade deposits that could supply a major portion of the requirements for many years. It may be necessary to obtain manganese from low grade materials, even though the cost is appreciably higher than when imported ores are used. An American Iron and Steel Institute questionnaire prepared in 1949 revealed the startling fact that open-hearth slags contained about as much manganese as is imported annually. The quantity of slag produced each year by integrated steel plants (not including cold-melt shops) and the manganese contained in the slag follows: Flush slag, 4,500,000 net tons a year containing 408,000 net tons Mn; tap slag, 7,230,000 net tons a year containing 364,000 net tons Mn; for a total of 772,000 net tons Mn. Some of this slag is returned to blast furnaces but about 75 pct would be available for the recovery of manganese. In several decades, when many of the present sources of high manganese ores have been depleted, open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore may become the major source of the manganese required for steel production. In 1948, manganese-ore imports from the U.S.S.R. were 427,000 net tons or 34 pct of the foreign ore. Imports from this source were only 81,000 tons in 1949. It became evident that adequate stockpiles of manganese could not be accumulated for many years. The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research program on methods for increasing domestic production of manganese and entered into a cooperative agreement with the American Iron and Steel Institute for recovering manganese from open-hearth slags whereby the Institute provided additional research funds and trained operating personnel. Description of Process and Equipment Numerous pyrometallurgical and hydrometallur-gical processes and combinations of the two can be applied to the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The process being developed at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines consists of: 1—Reduction of open-hearth slag in a blast furnace to recover the iron and manganese as spiegel-eisen with 12 to 24 pct Mn. 2—Selective oxidation of the manganese from the blast-furnace metal in a basic-lined converter to produce a high manganese slag with up to 60 pct Mn content, which is a synthetic ore for the production of ferromanganese. Chi phase (body-centered cubic, a = 8.89A) was found in as-cast 23 pct Cr-10 pct Mo-Fe alloy as well as in heat-treated 316, 316L, 317, and modified 446 stainless steels. Chi phase resembles sigma phase in its metastability, chemical composition, and brittleness. Microstructure and some of physical properties of chi phase were developed. MOLYBDENUM has been established as a desirable alloying element for the enhancement of corrosion resistance in Cr-Ni steels and creep and rupture strength in high temperature alloys. On the debit side, however, the molybdenum addition has been known to stimulate u formation. When the molybdenum-bearing steels were subjected to prolonged heating at elevated temperatures, losses of corrosion resistance and/or ductility have been observed. Andrews1,2 first found the existence of a new phase among the anodic FeC13 extracts from type 316 stainless steel solution treated and then reheated from 800" to 1100°C. This phase was designated x and was identified by diffraction patterns as of body-centered cubic structure with a value equal to 8.89? and similar to that of a manganese. He found that the x phase in this steel always coexisted with s phase, but failed to distinguish one from the other by metallographic technique. No definite conclusion was drawn regarding the equilibrium temperature ranges of these two phases. The appearance of Andrew's work recalled an un- explained structure observed several years ago at the Allegheny Ludlum Research Laboratories during the investigation of an experimental alloy containing 25 pct Cr, 10 pct Mo, and balance Fe. X-ray diffraction patterns on the as-cast material revealed the presence of a body-centered cubic phase having a lattice parameter of 8.89?. The structure was sufficiently similar to that of y chromium that for a time it was thought that the structure might be caused by the presence of some undissolved electrolytic chromium particles. The alloy as-cast was so brittle that it shattered after the slightest hot reduction by hammer cogging. This paper gives the results of some metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies on x phase as found in several experimental alloys as well as a few molybdenum-bearing commercial stainless steels. The analyses of materials studied were as shown in Table I. Experimental Procedure Metallography: Solid specimens were polished mechanically and etched in boiling 50 pct HC1 solution in order to best delineate x and s phases in the alloys studied. The PSU/MVS program, one of the computer programs for ventilation network analysis most recently developed at The Pennsylvania State University, was applied to the analysis of modifications to an existing ventilation system for a coal mine located in southern West Virginia. The program is well designed and has diversified capabilities which allow the users to make decisions on the optimum size and number of fans, the location and number of airshafts, and the optimum operational procedures. The mine had 10 working faces, from which the average production rate was about 5900 tons of clean coal per day. Two vane-axial mine fans were used in parallel at a shaft, and both of them operated simultaneously. One additional shaft was in the final construction stage and it would be used in four months to alleviate the load for the existing fans and distribute intake air more evenly. The overall ventilation surveys, including the altimeter pressure survey and the air quantity survey, were carried out in the mine entries, shafts, slopes, and gob areas. Computations were made using the above-mentioned computer program on the present condition and after one additional fan was placed in operation at the new shaft. Also, recommendations were made on the air route and fan blade settings for the most economical and efficient ventilation system. Further studies were carried out to decide the proper period when the third air shaft would be required according to the long-term mining plan. Additional branches were added for the next 4 years of the production plan, and the ventilation conditions were tested at the end of each year. Numerous combinations of blade settings and modifications of air routes were tested. It was recommended that the third air shaft be added at the end of the third year so as not to experience fan stall.

Since the Third Theory of Comminution was presented eight years ago (I) it has found increasing use in crushing and grinding problems. The practical utility of its wok index equation is quite generally acknowledged (2). However, its theoretical basis has been questioned in at least three technical articles (3) (4) ('). The purpose of this paper is to present experimental proof that it is scientifically correct. Particles under compressive stress are strained and deformed. They absorb strain energy, and when this locally exceeds the breaking strength, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends and splits the rock, releasing the strain energy as heat. The initial energy flow causes additional crack tips in highly strained areas. If the compression is rapidly applied by impact, crack tips may form before the strain energy has reached equilibrium in the particle, thus decreasing the total work input required for breakage. The energy necessary to break is essentially the energy necessary to produce crack tips, since the energy necessary to extend the cracks to breakage is already present as strain energy in the deformed particles. After breakage nearly all of this energy appears as heat. The crack length cannot be measured directly. However, in particles of regular and similar shape the crack tip length is considered as equal to the crack depth, or crack extension necessary to break, so that the crack length equals the square root of one-half of the surface area. The Third Theory states that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the total length of the new cracks formed. It can be confirmed by showing that a constant work input produces a constant length of new cracks when reducing the same material to different product sizes. This is done in the present paper on a wide variety of material. The constant work input was supplied by one revolution of the 12" x 12" laboratory ball mill used in making grindability tests by the Allis-Chalmers method (12) (13) The new crack lengths produced per mill revolution were measured from all available grindability test results at 28, 35, 48, 65, and 100 mesh on fifteen different ores, and were found to remain substantially constant for each ore at all mesh sizes. A new technique is used for the measurement of crack lengths. Size distribution plots of the mill feed and product are made by the Third Theory method (9) and the crack lengths are obtained from these plots by the procedure described in the present paper. The energy input required to produce a unit length is of fundamental importance in the size reduction of brittle solids. The crack length Cr is expressed in centimeters per cubic centimeter of solid material. It bears a definite relationship to the external surface area of the crushed or ground solid. A uniform particle shape must be assumed before the surface area and crack length can be evaluated. In this paper it is assumed that the relationship between the surface area and the particle volume of a particle d microns in diameter is the same as that of cube d microns on a side. The external surface areas of particles with a cubical breakage probably agree approximately with this rule, and correction factors can be applied when physical measurements of the surface areas are available for comparison. However, the assumption of equivalent cubes has been found satisfactory for most calculation purposes. Assuming equivalent cubes, one cubic centimeter of particles d microns in diameter will have a crack length Cr of v30.000/d centimeters, and a surface area of 60,000/d square centimeters. The specific crack length is thus equal to the square root of one-half the specific surface area. Where Sa is the surface area in square centimeters per gram and Sg is the specific gravity of the ground solid, then Cr = vSg . Sa/2 = 173.2/ vd (1)

One of the outstanding features of the year was a further marked decline in the footage drilled. This is estimated at 169,000 ft., as against 218,000 ft. for the previous year, and 372,500 ft. in 1930. Owing to repair work and improved production methods, there was an increase of about 4.25 per cent in the amount of oil won, the production being estimated at 10,160,000 bbl., or an increase of 400,000 bbl. over 1931 and nearly 750,000 bbl. more than in 1930. (See Table 1.) At the end of November there were 28 rigs in operation. During the first 11 months of the year 54 new wells were started; the average depth of those completed was 2476 feet. Owing to the continued restriction of drilling programs there has been little of outstanding interest in the way of new plant or technique. The use of the acid bottle, for testing the verticality of wells while drilling, has increased considerably, and this is now in use in practically every well except the very shallowest. During the last six months of the year fairly extensive use has been made of electrical coring. The number of wells started in the Colony up to the end of November, 1932, was 1894. The average number of producing wells during the year was 789, or 41.7 per cent of the total. Of these, 214 were flowing wells, 473 pumping, 80 bailing or swabbing, and 22 were produced by air or gas-lift. Although the last category represents less than 3 per cent of the total, there has been a marked increase in the use of air or gas-lift as compared with 1931. During the year there were 16 companies engaged in producing oil, as compared with 14 in the two previous years. In addition to one small refinery which started to operate at the beginning of the year, the five existing refineries worked continuously. At the latter very little has taken place in the way of extensions, except at one in the Parry Lands—Pitch Lake—Point Fortin area, where extensive alterations and additions are in progress, including the building of a deep-water pipe-line pier. When this is completed there will be five loading terminals, all situated in the sheltered Gulf of Paria, or west, coast, capable of accommodating ocean-going tank steamers. There

MANY attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals com-monly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compression or torsion test. THIS communication describes a series of experiments in which dislocation etch pitting was used to ascertain the depth of damage in crystals which were mechanically polished or which were cut with either a commercial metallographic cut-off wheel,* a com- All specimens were cut from single crystals of American Smelting and Refining Co. 99.999+ pct pure copper which were grown from the melt by the Bridge-man technique. The test specimens were disks, with faces being (111) planes and the disk axis a (111) direction. The disks were annealed in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr for 24 hr at 950°C prior to cutting or polishing and were given a light electropolishing in an ortho-phosphoric acid bath before etch pitting. Both Youngs1 and Livingston's2 reagents were used for etch pitting and the reagents gave identical quantitative results; however Livingston's reagent produced less staining and so all photomicrographs shown are of {111) surfaces etched with this solution. The surface of the annealed crystals showed well-defined subboundaries and a density of dislocations of about 1 X 106 per sq cm excluding those present in subboundaries, Fig. 1. The depth of cold work produced during mechanical polishing was determined after an annealed specimen was mounted in a paraffin holding block to protect it from extraneous damage. The exposed (111) surface was ground on metallographic papers and then polished on billiard cloth through 0.05-p alumina abrasive. It was necessary to remove about 0.3 mm (-0.01 in.) to obtain a structure representative of the annealed sur- face, indicating that the crystal was damaged to this depth during mechanical polishing. Silicosis is today's most important industrial disease and probably dates back to the Stone Age. Since the industrial revolution, increasing attention has been paid to those occupations where mineral dust is present in the air breathed by the workers. For many years it was assumed that the inhalation of all mineral dusts was hazardous. but investigations conducted in several countries pointed the statistical finger of guilt at free silica in any of its numerous physical forms as a dust of outstanding toxicity. Recognition of silica as the chief hazard has resulted in widespread use of the term "silicosis." Depending upon the concentration of finely divided silica dust to which the individual is exposed and the duration of exposure, silicosis may become a disabling condition in from one to thirty years. The structure of the lung and respiratory passages is such that only minute particles of silica can gain entry to the air cells in the lung (5 microns or under are most toxic). When these minute particles gain entry to the lung tissues they stimulate certain protective cells in the lung to multiply at an excessive rate. The cell's undergo inflammatory changes which result in nodular scars and a low-grade inflammation of the lung tissue. These progressive changes in the lung structure gradually encroach
