The studies of the mechanism of pre= cipitation and of the resulting property changes in aluminum-silver alloysl-3 have presented some new concepts of the aging reactioxl—concepts that may be fundamental in establishing a complete quantitative theory of age-hardening. With both aluminum-copper and aluminum-silver alloys, thin platelike aggregates form parallel to the Widmanstätten planes of precipitation.l,4 These platelets grow in lateral dimensions and in thickness with aging time until they arc thick enough to produce an X-ray diffraction line pattern. Their structure is that of a transition lattice which is coherent with the matrix, since the atomic spacings in the matrix and the precipitate are the same on each side of their common interface.2,4 The equilibrium precipitate forms later from and at the expense of the transition lattice. Since age-hardening occurs during the formation and growth of the transition lattice, the major contributor to the hardening no doubt is the stress condition in the matrix resulting from the matrix holding the precipitate in the coherent condition. The development of these stresses also appears to be responsible for an increase in the electrical resistance superimposed on the normal decrease resulting from a change in the concentration of the matrix during aging.3 The two consecutive reactions constituting the aging process are accompanied by characteristic microstructural alterations. The initial precipitation process results in the formation of a Widmanstatten figure, while the later transformation of the transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice is accompanied by a coalescence, in the case of aluminum-copper alloys,5 and by the appearance of light areas at the grain boundaries with aluminum-silver alloys showing a structural rearrangement of matrix and precipitate.3 This latter reaction is similar microscopically to the so-called "discontinuoils precipitation." Possibly discontinuous precipitation is a process that often if not always follows true precipitation of a coherent lattice and during which the transformation of the coherent transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice takes place accompanied by matrix recrystallization.3 Expermental Procedure The alloys were made using 99.97 per cent A1 or distilled magnesium, with

Flow and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even nni-.persal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non-mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manageable simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.' Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

The methods of handling the oil output of the Mid-Continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. Wooden Gaging Tanks Practically all of the oil sold to pipe line? and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-Continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways—leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The sizes in common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to 'settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks. strapping and Calculations After a gaging tank has been strapped (measured) and its contents computed, a deduction of 3 per cent. is made from its computed volume. A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risk of slope failure inherent in steeper slope angles. This paper describes the results of a case study in which a newly developed probabilistic economic analysis procedure was applied to the selection of a pit slope design at a large porphyry copper mine in the southwestern U.S. The paper also demonstrates the availability of the required data such as the probability of failure schedule and cost of failure models, under "real-life" conditions.

In connection with some of the experiments carried out by the writer on the behavior of gas and oil in a sand reservoir,' an interesting phenomenon was observed which may throw some new light on the problem of recovery of oil from a natural reservoir. The experiments are intended to show the effect of the surface area of the occluded gas masses, originally present in a reservoir, on the further evolution of gas from the oil and its consequent effect upon the rate of production of oil. The apparatus used in the experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. It consists primarily of a sand reservoir R and a displacement chamber D, which is used to induce small variations in volume. The reservoir and displacement chamber form a unit, and a lowering of the plunger D is equivalent to increasing the volume occupied by the oil and gas in the reservoir. The reservoir was first filled with dead oil and maintained under pressure until it was ascertained that most of the free gas had gone into solution. The volume of free gas present in the reservoir was computed from the coefficient of compressibility of the fluids by means of the displacement chamber D, reading to 0.005 c.c. and a special gage J reading to 0.02 lb. per sq. in. The oil was saturated with gas under pressure in reservoir S by circulating the oil for a long period of time through the gear pump B. Subsequently, the saturated oil was circulated through the sand reservoir following the circuit S6, B, S6, R4, the sand reservoir R, R1, R², F4, F1, back to reservoir S. In the following experiments the sand reservoir R was filled with gas-saturated oil at a pressure of 415Ib. per sq. in. with no free gas present. This was ascertained by closing off all the outlet valves and determining the coefficient of compressibility of the system by means of the displacement chamber D. The year 1935 witnessed one of the world's oldest industries—gold mining—attain the stature of a billion dollar business. Preliminary estimates indicate that somewhat over 30,000,000 oz. of gold was produced, the largest output ever recorded and exceeding the previous year by more than 11 per cent. Of this huge total the Witwatersrand field produced about 10,800,000 oz., compared with 10,480,000 oz. in 1934. Russia was apparently the stellar performer, and from incomplete data it appears that between five and five and a half million ounces were produced by the Soviets compared with 4,200,000 last year and 2,814,000 in 1933. The United States nosed Canada out of third place with a production of 3,546,000 oz. against 2,916,000 in 1934, while Canada increased her total from 2,965,000 to 3,291,000 oz. Similarly, gains of lesser magnitude were made in Australia, the Gold Coast and other countries. As a result of great activity in developing outlying areas on the Rand, and the great number of new companies building mills in Canada, Australia, the Gold Coast and the United States, the years 1936 and 1937 should see new high records, as these new producers will more than offset any decline in the older properties. The whole world has become "gold conscious" during the past three years. It has been the subject of innumerable articles by economists and others, but, unfortunately, because of their lack of actual mining knowledge, they have treated the production of gold as a static affair, ignoring geological and technical factors. It is hardly necessary to draw attention to the fact that the world's gold-mining industry was slowly but steadily shrinking in importance, owing to the gradual depletion of known deposits that were profitable to work at costs existing prior to 1929. The International Geological Congress at Pretoria and the League of Nations Committee drew attention to the estimates of the mining experts of the various governments predicting a steady falling off in world production. LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister's technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. In terms of the number of vacancies per unit volume Nv and the vacancy diffusivity given by

IT is generally believed that the amount of diamond drilling will increase appreciably in the next decade, as the seaarch for minerals throughout the world becomes more difficult and intense. An attendant problem may be one of short diamond supply, resulting in higher bit and drilling cost. With this background, the U. S. Bureau of Mines' and the School of Mines at the University of Minnesota' have established comprehensive research programs in diamond drilling. One of the several aims is the design of a more efficient bit, which would lower diamond consumption and increase rate of advance, both essential in reducing drilling costs. The objective of the specific research problem" discussed in this paper was an investigation of the cutting action of the cliamonds set in a diamond drill bit, cutting action meaning the manner in which the diamonds cut or. loosen the minerals in the rocks being drilled. In the literature on cutting action such descriptive terms are used .as: grinding, wearing, cutting, breaking, shearing, scraping, melting, and chipping. These actions were seldom described or defined. Grodzinski describes the cutting action of a single diamond in the shaping of certain types of material as "breaking out chips of the material." Brittle mate-. rials break as small separate chips, and tough materials, because of heat generated, give a continuous chip. Deeby said about diamond drills: "When diamonds are forced into the formation and rotated, they either break the bond holding the rock particles together, or they cause conchoidal fracture of the rock itself. The former action occurs when drilling in sandstones, siltstones, shales, etc. and the latter action when drilling in chert, flint, or quartz." He said that diamonds cut on the "grinding principle" but he does not define or elaborate on this action. The cutting action of diamonds on glass was first investigated about 1816 by Dr. W. H. Wol-laston, an English physicist. The best glass-cutting diamonds have a natural or artificially rounded cutting edge. This edge first indents the glass and then slightly separates the particles, forming a shallow and nearly invisible fissure. Since none of the material is removed, this action is one of splitting rather than cutting. No other reports of research work on the cutting action of the diamond were found, and further work was considered justified and advisable. It is impractical, even if possible, to observe directly the cutting action of a diamond drill bit in rock; therefore it was necessary to devise an indirect method. It was believed that a study of the following three observations would lead to a better understanding of the cutting action: 1—the appearance of the minerals or rock surface in the bottom of the hole, 2—the size, shape, and other characteristics of the drill cuttings, and 3—the condition of the diamonds in the bit. The cutting action in a particular rock probably varies with bit pressure and speed. If the bit were slowly lifted off the rock, the effect of decreasing pressure might obliterate those bottom hole characteristics that are specific at the test pressure. Likewise, if the drill were stopped with the bit still in contact with the bottom of the hole, then decreasing speed effects would tend to obliterate the characteristics at the set test conditions. Therefore, in order to preserve those cutting effects impressed on the rock at test conditions, it seemed necessary to lift the bit off the bottom of the hole almost instantaneously once drilling conditions, i.e., revolutions per minute, pressure, and water flow became constant. In addition to observing the cuttings, the bit, and the bottom of hole, it seemed desirable to collect some quantitative data for purposes of correlation with the observations and for a record of bit performance. Consequently such data as revolutions per minute, force applied, and rate of advance of the bit were recorded. Six rock types, listed in Table I, were chosen for the tests. It was felt that these rocks had most of the variable characteristics of texture, bonding, and mineral hardness met in the common rocks generally being drilled. The sandstone was so poorly cemented as to be friable, even though most of the cement was silica. The limestone, though well cemented, was quite porous. Originally it was planned to conduct the tesk work with a full-scale drill unit, using EX bits, 7/8-in. core, 11/4-in. OD. THIS shaft, located in the northern anthracite coal-field about 2300 feet southwest from the court-house at Wilkes-Barre, in the County of Luzerne, Pa., is the property of the Lehigh & Wilkes¬Barre Coal Company. The sinking and cribbing to the solid rock (see isometrical view on Plate IX) was conducted by Mr. W. W. Kenrick. Dimensions of the earthwork to the foundation of the cribbing, 51' 1/2" long, 17' 4" wide, 31' deep. Total amount of excavation in cubic yards, 998.5. Dimensions within the permanent cribbing, 45' 4" long, 11' 16" wide, 31' deep, divided into six parts by buttons 8" x 12", each division, 7' x 11’ 16". Permanent cribbing 12" x 12"; temporary cribbing 8" x 10"; backing, 3" thick ; clay puddle to ex¬clude surface water, 12" thick; conductors, 8" x 5"; lining, 1" thick from top to bottom of the shaft. In the latter part of the year 1871, Mr. H. Murray & Son contracted with the company for the continuation of the work at the rate of four hundred dollars per yard in depth, to a point 100 feet below the Hillman seam of coal ; for the succeeding 100 feet the price to be increased twenty-five dollars per yard, and so on until the bottom rock of the Baltimore seam of coal was found. The size of the shaft within the cribbing timbers is 45 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 6 inches, having six divisions of equal dimensions, 7 feet by 11 feet 6 inches, giving room for what is known as the" standard diamond" car, whose capacity when level full is 100 cubic feet, but when loaded by the miner 4 inches above the top contains 112 cubic feet.* Two divisions of this shaft are intended for hoisting coal from the Hillman seam, two from the Baltimore seam, one for ventilation, and one for pumps. The works were planned for two pairs of direct-acting, high-pres¬sure engines, twenty-four boilers, and for an estimated output of 2500 tons of coal per day from the two seams. * Size of the "standard diamond" car, 8' 10” x 4' 3" x 2’ 8” = 100.1.4; loaded 4 inches above the top, 8' 10” x 4’ 3” x 3’ “0"= 112.7.6.

FOR the second consecutive year, attendance at the Coal Division sessions far exceeded exoectations. Those in charge were continually faced with problems of finding seats and space for attending members. 115 seats were set - II~ for the annual luncheon meeting of the Division and approximately 175 members showed un. Since the hotel management would not serve more than the 115 it meant that 60 members were forced to eat elsewhere. This created hard feelings with some members. How- ever, officials of the Division were not able to obtain in advance any indication of this overflow crowd, but are suggesting to the New York Office that some means other than ticket sales be adopted to obtain an estimate of Division luncheon and dinner attendance. Members could be circularized prior to he meeting or they could be checked when registering as to the events they expect to attend. Under the inspiring leadership of Cadwallader Evans, Jr., Chairman, the Coal Division had a phenomenal growth during the year. Reporting at the luncheon meeting, Newel1 Alford stated that approximately 190 new members had been obtained. A few more years of continuing increase at this rate will make the Coal Division one of the largest Divisions in the Institute.

P. Shahinian and M. R. Achter (U.S. Naval Research Laboratory)—We should like to point out another instance where concentration of impurities in grain boundaries led to an embrittlement. In this case an impure nickel (99.8 pct) developed many more in-tergranular cracks during creep in a nitrogen atmosphere than in vacuum.5 In comparison high-purity nickel (99.99 pct) exhibited a much smaller atmosphere effect. We concluded that the interartion of the nitrogen with nitride-forming impurities concentrated at grain boundaries promoted inter-granular cracking.

Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table I), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term "potash" originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first U.S. patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 20.4 million short tons K2O produced in the world in 1970 (Eilertsen, 1971 ) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K,O, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1 .O% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K,O) . Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and meta- morphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such de- posits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of sea-water or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in [Table 1]. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971).

WARTIME depletion of the reserves of iron ore in the Lake Superior region of the grade and character now being shipped down the Lakes was serious. The time has come to take stock of the resources that remain in order to plan our future program of supply for our blast furnaces and protect, as far as possible. the tremendous investment made in the Lake Superior iron mining industry. Hugh M. Roberts and William H. Crago have estimated the reserves of the Lake Superior region in the United States at two billion long tons. These reserve figures are of direct-shipping ore and those concentrates produced by methods now in commercial use or those methods that may be expected in the near future. In their estimate they have assigned 392 million long tons to the Michigan ranges (all reserves in long tons) : 112 million tons for the Gogebic. 140 million tons for the Menominee, and 140 million tons for the Marquette.

In a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of Mining and Metallurgy, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose. we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step—the decision whether exploration should be undertaken—rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. Philosophy of Appraisal If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. flow then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects have already been ex-
