Rare earth element (REE) analyses of cumulus plagioclase from the PGE ore zone of the Stillwater Complex indicate that pressure fluctuations in the magma chamber acting on a single magma cannot be responsible for features such as the reappearance of Mg-rich olivine on the liquidus. The data are more consistent with a model involving multiple injection and mixing of geochemically distinct magmas. The PGE-bearing sulfides of the J-M Reef are associated with such a reappearance of olivine, indicating that the unusual location of the ore zone may be related to the addition of new magma, compositionally distinct from magmas that produced cumulates in the Ultra- mafic zone of the complex.

The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939. The problem of segregation and cavities in steel ingots is a subject which has given and is still giving metallurgists, engineers, and operators matter for serious consideration. This question has come more into prominence lately in the United States, due largely to the desire of railroad engineers to secure a better rail than they have obtained ill the past, as the service they demand is increasing in severity; and no doubt manufacturers will be able to meet what is required of them. The rails here are as good as those made in other countries, but the conditions of service and the extremes of climate are more Revere and consequently more breakages occur. Various reasons have been advanced to explain why rails may not be as good in quality to-day as in the past. Some engineers consider that modern methods of manufacturing, designed chiefly to obtain large output, tend to reduce the standard of excellence of more deliberate methods. Others think that 4-ton ingots are worse than those of 2 tons. Again, it is stated that the 100-ton heat in one ladle is too large, and is a step in the wrong direction in casting. My experience upon the question of the size of the ingot is that in rolling rails of from 85-to 100-lb. sections, the range of ingot is only practically such that the difference in the size does not help in the question of segregation, cavities, or blow-holes. I call attention to two ingots from work done at Pencoyd, Pa., 16 years ago. These ingots were bottom-poured, cast at the same time from the same center-runner, the one being 20 by 24 in. and the other 13 by 16 in. in size. ARTICLE I NAME AND OBJECT SEC. 1. This Institute is incorporated under the Membership Corporations law of the State of New York; its corporate name is American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Inc.; and its objects are such as are stated in its Certificate of Incorporation. ARTICLE II- MEMBERS SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise four classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Associates; 4. Junior Associates. All members shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that Honorary Members, Junior Associates, and Members and Associates whose residences shall be outside of the United States, Mexico, and Canada shall not e entitled to vote. Members and Associates residing within the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada, and not in arrears for dues, shall be entitled to vote in person at the meetings of the Institute, or, as hereinafter provided for, by letter ballot. SEC. 2. Members shall comprise all those persons who on the third Monday of February, 1918, were members of the Institute, and in addition thereto, all those thereafter elected or transferred into the class of Members. A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Members must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of-engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. Graduation from the scientific course of a college, approved by the Committee on Membership, shall be considered equivalent to two years' employment, as required in the previous sentence. Employment as a teacher of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy or chemistry, if in direct charge, may be considered a position of responsibility as specified in the second paragraph. Persons employed in research or any scientific literary work or in teaching in the scientific departments of colleges, approved by the Committee on Membership, who at the same time are engaged in consulting or in the active practice of mining, geology, or metallurgy, shall be entitled to consider the time so spent in active practice as equivalent to an equal length of time of employment in positions of responsibility, . provided the work done or the positions held seem to the Committee on Membership to warrant the. equivalency. The Permian Basin as it appears in the title of this article refers to three rather widely separated areas of production. It includes what are commonly known as the "Panhandle" fields of the northwest part of Texas; the West Texas fields, in the southwest part of Texas; and the New Mexico fields, in the southeast corner of New Mexico. These three areas are all included in a single province and produce the majority of their oil from limestones or dolomites of Permian age. The manner of accumulation of oil in the three areas is somewhat diverse. In the Panhandle, production is found on the flanks of an enormous structural ridge, the core of which is granite. In southwest Texas and New Mexico oil is produced from both gentle and steep folds and from lenticular areas of porosity. Production in Texas During 1927 Texas produced a total of 216,306,000 bbl. of oil of which the Permian Basin contributed 89,797,000 bbl., or 42 per cent. During 1928, Texas produced 255,021,000 bbl. of oil of which the Permian Basin contributed 145,955,000 bbl., or 57 per cent. The increase in total production is entirely due to the West Texas fields. All other districts in Texas declined during the year while the west Texas fields registered an increase of more than 71,000,000 bbl. West Texas daily average production increased from 260,752 bbl, at the beginning of 1928 to a maximum of 406,318 bbl. per day the first week in May. Due to prora-tion agreements, the production was held at a fairly constant level around 340,000 bbl. during the remainder of the year, having 345,660 bbl. the last week in December. Daily average production of the Panhandle fields decreased from 80,178 bbl. at the beginning of the year to 59,025 bbl. at the close of the year. The combined daily average production of the Panhandle and West Texas fields at the beginning of the year was 341,138 bbl. and at the close of the year was 405,408 barrels. Certain types of macromolecules added to water and salt solutions flowing in turbulent motion can reduce the pressure gradient. Alternatively, the volumetric capacity of a pipe for these fluids is increased by the presence of these materials. Examples presented show that the drag reduction can become significant. Thus, the presence of 0.28 per cent of a gum derivative in a solution of sodium chloride flowing at 200 gal/min in a 1.89-in. pipe yields a pressure drop which is 0.44 of the single-phase drop measured under the same conditions of turbulent flow; the addition of 0.1 per cent of a vinyl derivative to a I-in. water line yields a throughput capacity which is 1.78 of the single-phase capacity at the same pressure drop. It is further shown that these phenomena are distinctly different from previous observations with other classes of non-Newtonian systems. There a simple lowering of friction factors below the levels predicted from the resistance laws for Newtonian fluids is associated with a suppression of turbulent motion. A rational physical explanation for drag reduction is advanced. Briefly, the proposed mechanism is a storage by the molecular elastic elements of the macromolecules in solution of the kinetic energy of the turbulent motion. INTRODUCTION This study was inspired by a recent review of some paradoxical drag reduction phenomena in turbulent pipe f1ow.I Under very moderate conditions of turbulent flow, the pressure gradient necessary to pump solutions containing certain specific kinds of polymers, fibers and metallic soaps may become appreciably lower than that required* to pump the solvent, i.e., water or a low-viscosity hydrocarbon, under identical flow rates in the same conduit. As shown by our review, this phenomenon of drag reduction in turbulent duct flow was first noted during the second world war, apparently arising in connection with the development of flame warfare weapons. Since that time several papers illustrating this phenomenon have appeared: Toms, Oldroyd,3 Agoston et al., Bundrant and Matthews, Robertson and Mason,6 Ousterhout and Hall,7 Daily and Bugliarello~ Lummus, Anderson, and Fox. 9 That there are practical applications for techniques which increase discharge or decrease the pressure necessary to transport a liquid through a pipeline is illustrated in the patents which have issued which take advantage of this peculiar phenomenon, e.g., Mysels,l0 Dever, Harbour, and Seifert.11 One also finds fragmentary evidence of this effect in the data pertaining to a few of the polymeric solutions studied by Shaver12 and Dodge.13 However, these investigators were concerned with the development of friction factor vs Reynolds number correlations for a variety of non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions, rather than in a study of drag reduction-. A similar kind of drag reduction effect has been observed in gases. Sproull, for example, reports that adding dust to air flowing in turbulent motion through a pipe results in a lowering of the pressure gradient at identical flow rates. There are also military applications for reducing the drag on hydrodynamic vehicles. For example, the possibility of injecting a rheologically complex fluid into the boundary layers of bodies to reduce the skin friction has been investigated by Fabulal5 and Granville.16 Along somewhat different lines are the drag reduction studies of Kramer.17118 He has shown that skin friction can be reduced by covering the surface of a vehicle with a flexible skin. The effect is apparently due to the boundary layer being stabilized by the presence of the skin. Drag reduction by means of coexisting gas and liquid boundary layers, e.g., film boiling and continuous gas injection, has been proposed by Bradfield, Barkdoll, and Byrne,19 Cess and Sparrow,20'21 Sparrow, Jonsson, and Eckert.22 Here the skin friction occurs between a vapor and a surface rather than between a liquid and a surface. There are several references in the literature to friction-factor correlations for non-Newtonian solutions and suspensions: Shaver and Merri11,23 Dodge and Metzner, Clapp,25 and Thomas.26

Silicon carbide coated boron fiber (Borsic) reinforced aluminum composites were made which exhibit strength and modulus values predicted by the rule of mixtures. A successful technique for fabricating these composites consists of plasma spraying of monolayer filament reinforced tapes and subsequent diffusion bonding of these tapes into composites. The elastic properties of the composites were given by the rule of mixtures in reinforced directions. (The modulus parallel to the fibers was 32 x 106 psi for a composite with 50 pct by volume fibers. The other elastic properties for a composite with 50 pct fiber were transverse modulus = 14 to 16 X 10 psi, G = 9.5 x 106psi, and v,, = 0.23. Tensile strengths of over 190,000 psi were measured for the composites with 50 pct fiber and the average strength for these composites was 162,000 psi. These same composites had interlaminar shear strengths of 12 to 15,000 psi. Multidirectionally reinforced composites demonstrated the same reinforcement efficiency in strength and modulus as the uni-directimlly reinforced composites. Comrpessive strengths of composites with 50 pct by volume fiber were found to be greater than 250,000 psi. STRUCTURAL filamentary composite materials are being considered for use where high strength, high modulus, and lightweight materials are required. Metal matrix composites have been considered for use at temperatures ranging from cryogenic (aluminum stainless steel) to 6000°F (plasma sprayed tungsten plus tungsten fiber) and other requirements have been similarly diverse. Metal matrix composites offer high modulus and high strength in unreinforced directions, the ability to be joined by brazing or welding, and greater fracture toughness compared with the more easily fabricated resin matrix composites. This paper deals with the mechanical properties of aluminum boron composites, a system which is being considered for applications where lightweight, high modulus, and high strength are required at temperatures including those above the normal operating temperatures of resin composites. The boron fiber used in this investigation had an average room temperature strength of greater than 400,000 psi, a modulus of 58 x 106 psi, and a density of 0.09 lb per cu in. (2.6 g per cu cm).' The fiber used in the composites had a coating of silicon carbide to retard degrading reactions with the matrix at elevated temperatures. The coated fiber, which is sold commercially as Borsic: has been reported to have excellent resistance to degradation at temperatures up to 600°C in air and in aluminum2 and the same mechanical properties as the standard bare boron fiber. Fabrication of Composites. The composites were diffusion bonded from plasma sprayed monolayer tapes. These tapes were fabricated on a substrate of aluminum alloy foil which is incorporated in the composite matrix. The technique consists of winding a layer of fiber on the foil, and plasma spraying the balance of the matrix alloy over the windings which bonds all of the components together. Advantages of this process include the ability to achieve good fiber spacing, Fig. 1, the formation of a good bond between fiber and matrix (achieved during the plasma spraying), and the adaptability of the process for forming large and complex parts. This is particularly true when used with brazing foil backing which alloys low pressure bonding of the structural shape. PROPERTY EVALUATION TECHNIQUES Tensile test specimens, 5 to 7 in. long with a reduced gage section and ,030 to ,040 in. thick, were cut from composite sheets with a diamond saw. The gage section was .200 in. wide, while the gripped section was .240 in. wide and over 2 in. long in each grip. The standard gage length used was 1 in., however, transverse specimens (i.e., specimens with the fibers oriented 90 deg to the loading axis) were tested without a reduced section. Twelve specimens were also made with a 3-in. gage length but no significant effect of gage length was measured. The tensile test specimens were mounted in a fixture and aligned in friction grips using a 10X microscope. Unbonded foil doublers (0.010-in.-thick aluminum) were used to insure firm gripping with a minimum of damage to the fibers. The test specimens were transferred to the testing machine in a rigid fixture and mounted in the self aligning loading train. FROM the point of view of the metallographist, the adaptation of x-rays to the study of the crystal structure of metals is of the greatest importance. While one may hardly consider the findings resulting from x-ray study as revolutionary, their positive nature, compared with the deductions we have been forced to accept from the work that had gone before, gives firmer ground on which to build and furnishes new fields for speculation. Prior to the advent of the crystallogram, the best work on the crystal structure of steel was that of Osmond and Cartaud.1 They concluded, from their investigation with percussion figures formed at various temperatures, that alpha, beta, and gamma irons belonged to the cubic system and that they showed well-marked specific characteristics and could not have the same internal structure. What the internal structures were, they had no direct method of determining; but from a consideration. of the fact that the 001 plane (that parallel to the cube face) is a plane of perfect cleavage and minimum hardness in alpha iron and that the 111 (octahedral) plane is by far the most important in the crystallography of gamma iron, they were led to suggest the simple cubic arrangement as that of alpha and the face-centered cubic arrangement as that of gamma iron. They suggested the body-centered cubic arrangement as that of beta iron. The atomic arrangement of the various crystal forms of iron has been quite definitely determined in recent years by means of x-rays and the work of Westgren2 and Westgren and Phragmèn3 has been rather conclusive. They not only determined the atomic arrangement of alpha, beta, and gamma iron but also that of the high-temperature modification delta.

In speaking of the mining and economic conditions prevailing at the present time on the Rand, it is not my intention to go into the details of the mining practice, since this has been already well described both in the Transactions' and elsewhere,2 but rather to take a more comprehensive view of the industry and its surroundings as a whole, marking its general development and the lines of its future progress. In a paper entitled Deep-Level Shafts on the Witwaters-rand, with Remarks on a Method of Working the Greatest Number of Deep-Level Mines with the Fewest Possible Shafts,' presented to this Institute in August, 1900, I drew attention to the great cost of sinking the very deep vertical shafts that were then being seriously proposed as necessary for the development of the deeper areas, pointing out the strong advisability of working this ground by means of inclines to be sunk from the existing shafts of from 3,000 to 4,000 ft. in vertical depth. In this paper it is stated (p. 975): '" In short, practice upon the Rand now tends towards fewer vertical shafts and more underground inclines, especially for the very deep mining about to be undertaken." In consequence, the 6,000-ft. vertical shafts, at one time so much discuesed, have never been started, and they do not now seem likely ever to be. The necessity of placing all deep shafts further apart in order to make them control and exhaust larger areas was also dwelt upon. This economy wae vitally necessary for both

Concepts developed in a geologic data recording system at the Victoria, Nevada breccia pipe-skarn copper mine, are not fundamentally new, but represents expansion of earlier ideas. The basic philosophy is that a high quality geologic data base is necessary and should be complete, clear, standardized, neat, quantitative, and readily useable. It may be multi-colored or simply black and white. Graphic, descriptive and quantitative recording of data is essential. A format for core logging is presented and discussed, as well as a mu1tiple overlay system for recording data gathered in surface mapping.

When a mixture of chalcopyrite concentrate and lime is heated in air, the following reaction takes place: 2CuFeS2 + 4Ca (OH)2 + 8 ½ 02 ; 2Cu0 + Fe203 + 4CaS04 + 4H20. Ca (OH)2 is the only common reagent that will adequately control SO2 evolution in roasting. Other additives tried, including CaO, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaOH, MgO, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3, were not effective. All reacted with sulfur, but not to the extent that will be required to meet the new control regulations for sulfur oxide emissions. For example: when the concentrate was heated with the theoretical amount of limestone (CaCO3), about 55% of the sulfur was retained in the calcine; whereas use of the stoichiometric amount of Ca (OH), converted approximately 99% of the sulfur to CaSO1. In most of the experiments, Ca(OH)2 was formed by adding CaO to concentrates containing enough water to simulate filter cake from flotation circuit. This eliminated the need for drying the concentrate and utilized the heat of hydration of CaO.

Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. Captain Braxton Bigelow* Captain Braxton Bigelow was the son of Major John B. Bigelow, U. S. A., retired, and grandson of the late John Bigelow, author, and Minister to France under President Grant. Raymond Weir Smyth, born Nov. 3, 1888, was the son of Herbert Weir Smyth, professor of Greek Literature at Harvard University. He graduated (A. B.) from Harvard in 1909 and later pursued advanced studies there in chemistry and in metallurgy. He held the position of metallurgist for the American Steel and Wire Co. at Worcester, Mass., and also for the Steel and Tube Co. at Youngstomn, Ohio. For a time he was inspector of munitions for the British Government and stationed at the Railway Steel and Spring Co. at Latrobe, Pa. For a short time, in 1917, he was Inspector of Ordnance for the U. S. Government, and the following year, having entered the U. S. Naval Reserve Force, he was ordered in a similar capacity to the Midvale Steel Co. In September, he removed to the Navy Yard, League Island, Philadelphia, to train for the obligatory minimum of six months' sea duty. There he contracted influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, from which he died, September 27, at the Navy Yard Hospital. Atlantic Richfield Co. began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April 1975, in Live Oak County, Tex., 10 miles southwest of the town of George West. The operation is designed to produce 250,00 lb of U308 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Co., Dalco, and U.S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural cattle ranching and farming---but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well. A nine month enviromental baseline study was conducted on the property beginning in Feb. 1975. Plants and animals of the Clay West area were identified and representative terrestrial and aquatic communities were analyzed. Physical and chemical parameters of the soils were described and analyzed. The surface and underground waters were analyzed chemically; radionuclides, heavy metals, nutrients, and pesticide concentrations were measured in the creek sediments; bacteriological measurements were made in creek water and sediments; radionuclide and chemical levels in plants and animals, both terrestial and aquatic, were measured. These studies, though not required by existing, state or federal laws, were considered necessary to assess the existing conditions before operations began on site. The in-place leaching technique for uranium mining eliminates the enviromental disturbances associated with open pit or underground mining. No grinding and crushing of ore is needed, nor are large tonnages of waste tailings produced. Surface subsidence is not expected since less than 5 lb of uranium is present per ton of rock and even complete removal of such small amounts should not cause subsidence. Solution mining has fewer environmental problems than conventional mining. Members of the Texas Water Quality Board recognized the differences which exist and have recently formulated new environmental control procedures which apply specifically to solution mining. Some of the solution mining activities which are of particular concern are discussed in the following pages. Process Description The produced uranium-bearing solution is pumped through a pipeline from the pattern area to the plant area. The first pattern area consists of a nest of 125 fluid injection, production, and monitor wells [(Fig. 1)]. Injection wells have 4-in. casings and are spaced 50 ft apart on a square grid. Production wells have a 6-in. casing and are located in the center of each square. A block flow sheet of the plant is given in [Fig. 2]. The produced solution goes through parallel trains, each consisting of a carbon column and an ion exchange column in series. The carbon column removes any sand present in the produced solution and the ion exchange column extracts the uranium. The depleted solution is treated with chemicals and returned to the field for reinjection. The uranium retained in the ion exchange column is removed periodically with a sodium chloride solution. Uranium-bearing solution from the ion exchange column is passed through a charcoal column for removal of impurities and then to a precipitation tank where the uranium is precipitated as yellowcake slurry. The yellowcake slurry is clarified, filtered and dried to produce a granular yellowcake product. Environmental Considerations Sources of waste solutions to storage reservoirs, the backwash reservoir and atmospheric discharges are shown in the block flow sheet [(Fig. 2)]. These waste solutions pose a relatively small problem and are adequately controlled by conventional means. There is one area, however,

Aluminum which has lost its original identity as to source may be considered as secondary. This would include scrap originating in the fabrication of aluminum, which is not consumed at the plant of fabrication, and all material resulting from fabrication, which has lost its original identity regardless of whether it be consumed at the plant of fabrication or not. In general, secondary aluminum may be divided into two classes, commercially pure and alloyed. The chief impurities found in commercially pure aluminum are copper, iron, titanium and silicon; while in aluminum alloys, copper, iron, titanium, silicon, zinc, manganese, magnesium, nickel, or tin, may be present in varying proportions. Occasionally lead and antimony are found in secondary aluminurn alloys, especially if the alloy results from remelting vender's automotive scrap. Such alloyed elements as are found in the scrap cannot be removed on remelting. In this, the remelting of secondary aluminum differs from the smelting of secondary copper or most other secondary metals. The majority of secondary materials reach the consumer in the form of remelt ingot or remelt No. 12 ingot. This ingot varies greatly in quality, depending upon the source of the material, and the manner in which it is refined and blended. The principal differences between primary and secondary ingot are: 1. The composition of secondary ingot may be more or less inclcfinite. 2. Secondary ingot may contain more dross and oxide. Secondary ingot may, however, be used successfully in a great itiany products. Relation of Primary Production to Secondary Production Table 1, compiled from data published by The Ameriran Metal Market, gives an approxirnatc idea of the relation of primary to srcondary production. Information obtained from other sources leads the authors to believe that the figures for secondary production are somewhat low.

In my last report on Petroleum in Burma and India1, details were given of production and development up to 1932. It was pointed nut, that the only statements available for Burma were those published officially by' the Government of India in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India), which are issued about 10 or 11 months after the close of the year. Operations in Burma are almost entirely in the hands of three companies—the Burmah Oil Co., the British Burmah Petroleum Co. (with its subsidiary, the Rangoon Oil Co.) and the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co.—and these companies preserve a policy of secrecy, so that details are not available of new wells, depth, wells abandoned, or of other figures, except in so far as the Government considers it advisable to publish the information in its possession. GeneRal Developments in 1933-1934 As predicted in 1933, there have been no spectacular developments and no new fields have been discovered. Nor are there any new indications of a likelihood of fresh discoveries. The policy of extremely careful exploitation. has been continued and intensified; production is being maintained at an almost steady level and can be so maintained for many years to come—indeed, it is the policy of the leading company to permit refinery and local market requirements to dictate the production required. Contrary to experience in practically every other part of the world, India has shown a slightly decreased demand for petroleum products—especially kerosene, but also for gasoline. The increased use of electricity would explain the lower demand for kerosene, but the falling off in the demand for gasolinc can only be attributed, according to the Chairman of the Burmah Oil Co., to the depression and to the incidence of heavy taxation. In India (including Burma) as a whole, production was 305,018,751 Imperial gallons in 1931 (8,714,822 U. S. barrels); 308,606,031 Imp. gal. in 1932; 306,009,022 in 1933 and is estimated at 308,000,000 in 1934.

IN general, fatty acids or their alkali salts do not cause clean quartz to float. However, the presence of multivalent ions, such as the alkaline-earth metal ions and heavy-metal ions, can activate quartz and thus make it respond to soap flotation. The mechanism of activation and soap flotation of quartz has been studied.1-4 The problem was attacked by making flotation tests rather than by careful adsorption measurements on suspensions of ground quartz in solutions containing the activator and the collector. Attempts have been made to determine the adsorption of barium ion and calcium ion on quartz. The results have only qualitative value as the analytical methods were not adequately precise. Artificial radioactivity and progress in radioactivity detection have introduced a new analytical tool, which can have a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than that of other methods.5-6 In the experimental work described in this paper the radioactive tracers, barium 140 and carbon 14, were employed. Lauric acid was synthesized, having a radioactive carbon atom and was used with Ba140 to study the adsorption of barium and laurate ions from aqueous solution on ground quartz. Flotation tests, using the vacuum flotation technique,4 were run in conjunction with the adsorption experiments. The object of this investigation was to understand better the reaction mechanism of barium activation and soap flotation of quartz. Methods and Materials Quartz Sample Preparation: Lumps of hand picked quartz, washed free of stains, were reduced in size to -20 mesh in laboratory crushers. The product was boiled in concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the abraded iron. The cleaned product then was ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, using siliceous pebbles, to pass through a 200 mesh screen. The ground product was deslimed by sedimentation at 37 microns. This -200 mesh +400 mesh material was subjected again to boiling with concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by washing with distilled water and further desliming. The cycle was repeated until no trace of iron could be detected in the wash liquor. During the final washing, the pH of the wash water was checked to insure the complete removal of the acid from the mineral. The quartz then' was rinsed with conductivity water. The resulting product was dried in a drying oven and stored in mason jars. The impurities (spectrographic) were as follows: Al, 0.01 to 0.001 pct; Li, Mg, Mn,, Na, each less than 0.001 pct; Fe and Cu not detected. The specific surface of the quartz sample was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.7 The average of two measurements was 881 sq cm per g. The calculated specific surface for 37/74 micron quartz particles, using a surface factor of 1.96,8 is 900 sq cm per g. This is in good agreement with the measured value of 881 sq cm per g. Beta-Counting Method: The radioactive isotope of barium used in the experimental work was barium 140. It has a sufficiently long half-life, 12.8 days, emits high-energy beta particles (up to 1.0

Recently Chang determined heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide from 325" to985°Kand 326" to 912"K, respectively, and, using other published data, made certain solid-state calculations for these two compounds. Chang expressed his Cp values in units of cal per "g-atom alloy" OK. We consider this poor usage since l) tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide are not alloys, and 2) an atom of an alloy does not exist. However, one may convert his values to units of cal per mole OK by merely doubling them. For TaC he calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 9.07 x lo-' "g-atom per cal". We have refined the calculation of this parameter and have arrived at a much lower value. Rather than approximating the true coefficient of volume expansion, a,, as three times the true coefficient of linear expansion, a, we calculated u, from the TaCo.99, lattice expansion data of Fries and Wahman.38 At 25°C a, = 14.3 x 10s per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 13.32 cu cm per mole at 25°C. From the lattice compression data of Champion and Drickamer~' for "TaC,.,," we determined the room-temperature compressibility to be 3.5 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne by plotting l/Vo (aV/ap) vs applied pressure. (Since the lowest pressure at which Champion and Drickamer reported a relative volume was 20 kbars, one may calculate an approximate compressibility only. Chang calculated a compressibility of 3.175 x 10-l3 sq cm per dyne from the same data.) We also used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.38 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C. From these four values we calculated a Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 5.8 x 10-l4 mole per erg or 2.4 x lo- ' mole per cal, and a Cdil value of 2.3 x 10' ergs per mole OK. In the case of tungsten monocarbide no isothermal compressibility has been reported; however, one may calculate an approximate Nernst-Lindemann parameter by using the adiabatic compressibility reported by Brown, Armstrong, and Kempter." Using the WC lattice expansion data of Mauer and Bolz~l we calculated a, to be 12., x l0-' per OC. The molar volume was calculated to be 12.5 cu cm per mole. We used twice Chang's value of Cp = 4.18 cal per "g-atom alloy" OK for the molar heat capacity at 25°C. From these four values we calculated an approximate Nernst-Lindemann parameter of 2 x lo-' mole per cal, which is much
