APOCRYPHAL, no doubt, but widely entertained is the proposition that top-flight mining geologists never agree with each other on anything. Being rugged individualists, they frequently seem intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. However, one may suspect that controversy is often more apparent than real. For example, at last summer's meeting of the American Mining Congress, Ira B. Joralemon and Reno H. Sales, discussing "Mining Geology, Today and Tomorrow," seemed to be in serious disagreement over various phases of the subject; but much of this arises from the different angles of approach of the two distinguished and successful ore finders.

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse.

The Pueblo Viejo Mine, a 7, 250 mtpd (8,000 stpd) gold-silver cyanidation plant built by Rosario Dominicana S. A., was described in Volume I of this monograph. At the time of writing that volume, Pueblo Viejo had not yet gone on-stream and operating data or costs could not be presented. Since that time this information has been obtained and several interesting modifications and an expansion have been made to the plant. Because Pueblo Viejo is the largest open-pit gold mine in the world and one of the world's leading gold-silver operations with production of approximately 31 kg (1,000 oz) gold and 125 to 155 kg (4,000 to 5, 000 oz) silver per day, the authors have updated the previous data and flow sheet. The Dominican Government, which held a 4670 interest in Rosario Dominicana S. A., completed purchase of the mine to gain full control in 1979. Rosario Resources will continue to manage the mine, at least until the end of 1980. Gold was produced at Pueblo Viejo almost 500 years ago with initial production in the year 1505. Rosario Resources became interested in the property in 1969 and found surface oxidation had rendered the upper portion of the ore body amenable to direct cyanide treatment. The treatment of the underlying gold-bearing sulfide zone is still undergoing metallurgical studies. The ore is considered to be a laterite; and because there appeared to be few boulders in the ore zone, only a 400 m (16 in. ) square grizzly was initially installed ahead of the mills when the plant went on-stream in late 1974 at a design capacity of 7,250 mtpd (8,000 stpd). Operation also proved the ore to be harder than was originally anticipated. During 1967 a 1. 25 m by 1. 5 m (48 in. by 60 in. ) jaw crusher was installed to -feed the 1, 000 mt (1, 100 st) mill bin. Minus 200 mm (8 in.) crushed ore is fed directly to two 5.5 m by 1. 8 m (18 ft by 6 ft) semi-autogenous mills re-powered with 750 km (1,000 hp) motors and 50 mm (2 in.) grates. Each mill product is screened at 13 mm (1 /2 in.) by a vibrating screen. Screen oversize from each mill is combined on a single return belt equipped with a magnetic head pulley for grinding ball removal. The non-magnetic oversize is then split into two fractions for return to the primary mills. Originally, a minus 6 mm (1/4 in ) product was made on each screen and fed to a 300 kw (400 hp) 2.6 m by 3. 7 m (8-1/2 ft by 12 ft) regrind mill. Great strides have been made during the past few years in the field of rock mechanics, and steps have been taken to implement our newly acquired knowledge to advance the mining industry and improve the lot of the miner. This article is a summary of the latest progress in those areas of rock mechanics indicated by the subtitles. Let's look at these new tools for mining men. GROUND STABILITY DETERMINATIONS Much valuable information in the field of rock mechanics can be obtained by relatively simple, inexpensive measurements and observations, and this kind of investigation can be classed under the general heading of "Ground Stability Determinations." The instrumentation involved in this type of work is relatively simple and inexpensive, and its operation is not difficult to understand.1,2 Precise deformation measurements accurate to a few thousandths of an inch are very helpful in detecting stope convergence, pillar compression, floor heave, etc. Such measurements recorded over a period of weeks and months will detect and forwarn against failure of the overall mine structure long before any other visual evidence can be observed. Such advance warning then permits the introduction of sufficient artificial support in time to do some good. Instead of precise measurements which must be made with a special instrument, sensitive warning lights can be used which will flash red upon sensing movements as small as .002 or .003 in. These devices are well received by miners, and very practical under noisy conditions. High precision is important tit this area, but in large openings, engineer's tapes plus machinists scales reading to .01 in. may be sufficient. Uniform tensioning of the tape is of course essential. Long term, precise measurements have shown repeatedly that opening convergence lends to be slow and uniform except when accelerated to sudden large displacements by blasting, rock bursts or other sudden large scale failures. It is interesting to note that measurements in South Africa in very deep mines have shown 40% of the closure was footwall rise, and only 60% was hanging-wall sag.

The influence of a number of alloying additions on the structure and hardness of Ni3Al (?') has been studied. Three general effects have been observed.. solid-solution hardening, strain aging, and defect hardening arising from deviations from stoichiometry. The solid-solution hardening phenomena are complicated relative to binary terminal solid solutions due to the possibility of virtually independent substitution for the component elements and to the concomitant effects of strain aging. In many superior nickel-base high-temperature alloys the elevated temperature strength is attributable to the presence of a dispersion of Ni3A1 (?') in a solid-solution matrix. Examples of such alloys are Inconel X-550, Inco 713, Waspalloy, and Nimonic 80. It is, therefore, appropriate to seek a further understanding of the properties and alloying behavior of this compound. Ni3Al, the compound most rich in nickel in the nickel-aluminum binary system, was first detected by litakal but not established with certainty until the much later studies of Bradley and Taylor' and Alexander and Vaughan.3 More recently the mechanism of formation was clarified by Floyd4 who showed that Ni3Al is the product of a peritectic reaction at 1395°C between the melt and the compound NiAl in agreement with the original suggestion of Alexander and Vaughan.3 Ni3Al has the ordered face-centered-cubic or Cu3Au structure in which the nickel atoms occupy the face centers and the aluminum atoms the cube corners, a0 = 3.570A. Despite earlier reports to the contrary. the compound apparently remains ordered at least to 1000oC.5 It exists over a narrow range of compositions (-3 pct wide) whose limits and temperature dependencies thereof have been reviewed recently by Taylor and Floyd.' Most previous workers have found Ni3Al to be both hard and brittle7,8 although Maxwell and Grala8 obtained 2.5 to 6 pct tensile elongation at room temperature and Alexander and vaughan3 described the material as "hard and tough" on the basis of observations made while preparing metallographic specimens. In a recent study one of the present authors found that although considerable intergranu-lar brittleness was evident: individual grains of a coarse-grained inert atmosphere arc-melted specimen were readily deformable.l0 The same study also showed Ni3Al to have an anomalous temperature dependence of hardness in that such a curve exhibits a number of peaks between room temperature and 800°C which could not be associated with any microscopically observable precipitation reactions or polymorphic transformations. It was, therefore, proposed in the present study to elucidate the anomalous high-temperature strength behavior and to examine the solid-solution alloying of this compound and the effects of such alloying on hardness. Sample Preparation and Experimental Procedure-Samples, both of pure Ni,Al and of various alloyed solid solutions based on Ni3Al, were prepared by arc melting 100-g buttons in an inert atmosphere arc furnace. All buttons were heat treated for 4 hr at 1275oC and examined metallographically for homogeneity. Microstructures were typically homogeneous and single phase with ASTM grain size about 1 and unusually clean grain boundaries. Chemical analyses showed good correspondence (within a few tenths of a percent) with intended compositions. Microindentation hardness data were obtained from room temperature to 800°C in vacuo using a balanced-beam type loading system in an instrument to be described in detail elsewhere." In general a 100-g load, a loading rate of 1 mm per min and an indentation time of 15 sec were used. Various indenter materials were used according to the materials bein tested because of specimen-indenter interaction. Fl Measurements of the Vickers-type indentations were made at room temperature. Hardness-temperature curves were run at least twice on each sample to ensure that surface work-hardening effects had been eliminated." L. D. GODSHALL, Everett, Washington: This very interesting paper cannot fail to command the attention of every one who has ever had experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores. I wish to call attention to three very important facts brought out very prominently by the paper, namely: 1. The extent of accumulation of amalgam on copper plates in the form of scale, not removable in the ordinary manner; 2. The change in the relative quantity of the two metals in the amalgam as we. recede from the battery-discharge; 3. The difference in fineness of the bullion obtained from the above-mentioned scale as compared with the bullion from the daily clean-ups. From Mr. Bayliss's figures we find that during the life of the plate in question 14,942 tons of ore were crushed, yielding amalgam of the value of $5.03 per ton, or a total value of $75,158.26. The amalgam accumulating on the plate during this time as scale, we find to have had a value of $8340.54, or $0.558 per ton of ore treated, representing 11.09 per cent. of the total amount of amalgam saved in the ordinary clean-up; or, taking the amalgam saved by daily clean-up plus the amalgam-scale as representing the total saved on this plate, or 100 per cent., we find that the daily clean-up saved 90.01 per cent., while the scale represented 9.99 per cent. The above figures do not include some additional amalgam still adhering to the plate after scale had been removed. We are told that this was not an exceptional case at the Drum Lummon, but that other plates have even yielded a third more than the one in question. The interesting query now comes up, whether this experience at the Drum Lummon is exceptional or universal at all mills; and another question arises, as to how long such an accumulation might continue,

A previous article1 by the authors contained a general description of the new roasting furnace herein described but it did not go into detail as to the metallurgical behavior or the results obtained. Believing that such information would be of great value, they have elaborated on the subject and have given many unpublished details. The furnace described applies the principle of roasting finely divided zinc-sulfide ores, now produced in large quantity by the flotation process, in gaseous suspension; that is, the ore particles are carried, in suspension, in a current of air and gaseous products of the roast. The relatively great fineness of flotation concentrate presents difficulties and problems of roasting in furnaces of the ordinary type; the fine ore is forwarded through the furnace in the form of a shallow bed and its very fineness leads to dense impervious bedding which prevents oxygen from reaching the interior of the bed, thus unduly lengthening the time of roasting and preventing the elimination of the last of the sulfur. The fineness of the concentrate, normally, should lead to a rapid and complete roast, for the speed of roasting is a function of the surface exposed to oxygen, which surface is greatest, per unit of weight, in very fine material. The difficulty in bed roasting is to get the oxygen to the particle. If the fine ore, during the roasting, could be freely suspended in oxidizing gases, full advantage could be taken of the great surface conferred by its fineness. This fundamental idea, of course, is not new, for the Stedtefelt furnace, familiar to the older metallurgists, is an example of it; but the manner in which this is accomplished may be new. On July 27, 1919, there passed away a simple, unassuming gentle-man, who, throughout his life, allowed his intense modesty to keep him-self in the background and during his later years effaced himself so thoroughly that but few of his acquaintances knew aught of him. Yet he was one of our accomplished metallurgists, who did good work in the practice of his profession and lived an upright life. Now that he is no longer with us Franz Fohr cannot plead to be overlooked, and those who fondly remember him will be gratified by his receiving his due. Franz Fohr was born, Sept. 7, 1838, in Mannheim, Germany. Of his ancestry, education, and early career we know scarcely anything. We do not even know just when he came to America, or. what led him hither. The first record of his professional work in this country, found among his papers, shows that from July, 1870, to Jan. 1, 1872, he was superin-tendent of the Newark Smelting & Refining Works, then owned by Ed-ward Balbach & Son. At that time the Balbach works at Newark, established in 1850, and the Selby works at San Francisco, established about 1866, were the only important silver-lead refineries in the United States. Mr. Fohr may have been associated with the Balbachs for some time before he became superintendent of their plant or he may have come from Germany but a short time previously. At all events, it is certain that he was at that time an experienced and accomplished metallurgist. After leaving Newark and going to San Francisco, he soon formed a connection with Thomas H. Selby & Co. Early in 1874-this firm sent him to New York to procure information respecting the manufacture of white lead. His engagement in New York terminated on-Jan. 31, 1875. During 1875, Mr Fohr spent some time at Silver Islet and in the Lake Superior copper region, but of his work there no record remains. In the latter part of 1875, or early in 1876, he associated himself as metallur-gist with the Boston Silver Co., operating at Saint John's, Summit County, in which William L. Candler, of Boston, was the moving spirit. That company was developing its mine in 1875. At the end of that year it "had about 800 tons of ore on hand, about three-fourths of which is dress-ing ore, to be concentrated in its very systematic establishment and to be smelted into pig lead." Evidently Mr. Fohr was engaged for the latter purpose. Henry A. Vezin, erudite and painstaking, was the mechanical engineer for the company. In the fall of 1876, Anton Eilers took his family for the first time so far West as Denver and Mr. Fohr went with them. I do not think that Mr. Eilers had any connection with the Boston Silver Co., save possibly in a consulting capacity, but he visited Saint John's and the enduring friendship among Eilers, Fohr, and Vezin, which terminated only with their deaths, dated from that time.

"With a total value to date of well over $200,000,000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $ 100,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper.Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade.In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1 924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.The known mineralized area of the district is found in a broad syncline striking north and south. The west limb plunges sharply and extends for a distance on its dip of approximately one and a half miles to the trough. The east limb raises gently through a distance of about two miles to the east limit of known mineralization. This general structure is broken by local faulting throughout the district, the local structural conditions playing an important part in the ore deposition. The north end of the fold is obscured by a rhyolite flow and the south end stops against a monzonite stock."

FEW persons outside of the foundry trade have any conception of the great variety of sands now regularly specified and furnished, nor of the differences in foundry practice frequently resulting from apparently minor changes in sands. Conditions in each locality where the sands are mined and prepared necessitate special equipment designed to perform the work efficiently. The description that follows of the foundry sand producing operations is typical of the areas in New York and New Jersey, and particularly refers to the operations of the George F. Pettinos Co.

THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

Drilling in West Texas during 1942 was substantially less than in the previous year. In all. 1267 Wells were drilled, as compared with 2325 wells in 1941. Of these 1267 wells, 1052 oil wells, 10 gas wells and 69 dry holes were drilled in proven fields and 36 oil wells, one gas well and 99 dry holes were wildcat operations. Of the 36 wildcat wells completed as oil producers, 16 led to new field discoveries, three found new productive horizons in old fields, and 17 extended the productive limits of established fields. Where semiwildcat drilling took place along established productive trends, there was often no sharp demarcation between wildcat wells that extend field limits and normal development to fulfil lease obligations, other than the arbitrary classification of a well as a wildcat if it was drilled at a distance of 2 miles from a producing oil well. The dry hole drilled on the edge of a field may have proved a more hazardous operation than a semiwildcat drilled several miles from production but favorably located on structure. The percentage of successful wildcatting ranges from 26.5 down to 14 per cent, dependent upon the degree of inclusion of the semiwildcat operations. Irrespective of which figure was used, the West Texas area maintained its better than average exploratory position. No doubt a number of factors may have influenced the extent of the 1942 development. Among those arising from the economic dislocation attendant on the war effort, the following are worthy of note. Owing to inductions into the armed forces and shipyard competition for mechanically trained men, experienced drilling personnel was sharply reduced, thereby increasing drilling costs and well-completion hazards. Replacement labor has not met the same standard of responsibility or workmanship to which the oil industry has grown accustomed. Increased military consumption of aviation gasoline and other crude products, coupled with decreased domestic consumption of lower-octane gasoline, has stimulated the market demand for the types of sweet crude most readily processed with available refinery equipment to meet war requirements, and has depressed the market demand for the sour West Texas crudes. As a majority of the purchasers of West Texas crude normally ship a substantial portion of sour crude to the refineries on the Atlantic seaboard, the loss and diversion of tanker service between Gulf Coast and north Atlantic ports have further curtailed the market demand for this type of crude oil. As some purchasers of crude oil were able to move by pipe line their West Texas trunk-line capacity to Midwestern refining centers, they were not impelled to curtail purchases of West Texas crude. The varying ability of the purchasers of crude oil to market West Texas crude was reflected back to various fields to which they were connected, causing an unequal distribution of production as among fields and operators. "Titanium is a widely distributed, dark grey metal1ic element found in small quantities in many minerals. It has no important uses." Happily, this early quotation proved to be wrung; titanium has, on the contrary, found a large number of very important uses. The error in the 1926 quotation illustrates the problems associated with forecasting the future development of any metal. 'The paper will nevertheless attempt to estimate what will happen to the European titanium industry over the coming decade with slightly more accuracy. It was not until 1955 that anything other than pilot plant facilities were installed in Europe. In 1955 IMI's plant in England, two plants in Germany, one in France and one in Sweden came into operation. All the companies associated with titanium installed melting furnaces but only IMI Titanium has forging and rolling facilities devoted solely to the production of titanium. The other firms rely on the use of equipment of their parent steel companies for processing the me1 ted titanium ingots.

I HAVE now the duty—the very pleasant duty—to perform, of presenting to the Hon. Abram S. Hewitt the Bessemer gold medal for distinguished services to the iron and steel trade. When this matter was brought under consideration in London it was well known that, as Mr. Hewitt would be the first to acknowledge, there is more than one man in America upon whom we would gladly have cm ferred this distinction, and to whom this merit might be justly at tributed ; but Mr. Hewitt has been long known to our distinguished members on the other side of the Atlantic as one of the most active minds in the investigation of new methods of manufacture, and one of the most enterprising metallurgists on this side of the Atlantic. Well, gentlemen, we proposed to Mr. Hewitt that he should receive this gold medal, but I think it is quite right, and is his due, that I should state that he at once declined to receive it; and he declined in a manner which rendered it impossible to any one but very per sistent friends and very obstinate Englishmen to refuse. When we heard that our American friends had conferred once more upon Mr. Hewitt the distinction of President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and particularly with reference to our contem plated visit, and when we heard that he had been elected unani mously to that position, we felt that we had received the stamp of approval from this side. Gentlemen, as I said before, Mr. Hewitt has long been known to many of us in England as an advocate of scientific education. A report which he made of the metallurgical products at the Paris Exposition in 1867 was one of the matters which drew very clearly and distinctly the attention of the English iron and steel trade to the necessity of further improvement in our technical education as to iron and steel; and it was one of those beginnings which led ultimately to the foundation of the Iron and Steel Institute. Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. THE adoption of rock dusting, as a safety measure, has made notable progress in the West Virginia coal mines since May, 1925. At that time there were but two mines in the State that were thoroughly rock dusted, mines No. 2 and No. 12 of the Boone County Coal Corp., at Sharpless. Since then it is probable that 75 per cent of the coal operators in the State have given consideration at one time or another to rock dusting. This growth of interest followed the meetings of the various mining institutes all over the country, during the summer of 1925, at which papers were presented, drawing the attention of the coal mining operators to the merits of this safety measure. Yet outside of the experience with rock dusting at the Old Ben Coal Corp., of Southern Illinois, and the Carbon Fuel Co., of Rains, Utah, there had been no actual occurrence in the coal mines of the United States, which could be taken as positive evidence of the efficacy of rock dusting in the prevention of the propagation of coal dust explosions. The U. S. Bureau of Mines, however, had run innumerable tests under conditions which closely approximated actual coal mining conditions and had clearly shown that rock dusting was effective.

Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack.
