A fast, easy, and inexpensive method of determining the consolidation of overburden in surface mining operations through seismic analysis has been developed. The method involves use of a refraction seismograph which measures overall consolidation of subsurface materials, including such factors as rock hardness, stratification or lamination, fracturing or jointing, and the degree of weathering or decomposition. It also is possible to determine the thickness of various layers of subsurface materials to depths exceeding 100 ft.

THE typical block coal of the Brazil (Indiana) District differs in chemical composition but little from the coking coals of Western Pennsylvania. The physical difference, however, is quite marked ; the latter has a cuboid structure made up of bibuminous particles lying against each other, so that under the action of heat fusion through- out the mass readily takes place, while block coal is formed of alternate layem of rich bituminous matter and a charcoal-like substance, which is not only very slow of combustion, but so retards the transmission of heat that agglutination is prevented, and the coal burns away layer by layer, retaining its form until consumed. In particular, the problems associated with haulage of the gob back to the mine, the blown gob method of dispersion underground, and handling the refuse as slurry are discussed. A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

THE future of the steelmaking industry of the Birmingham, Ala., district is closely related to and, in a large measure, dependent on the development of workable, economic processes of ore concentration. Particular examples include: (a) deformations associated with longwall caving, (b) the effect of support pressure on roof deformation above a longwall face, (c) the effect of pack design on longwall access road closure, (d) the effect of rock deformation characteristics on floor heave.

A technique useful in the important area of process-model building is described. The procedure is illustrated in the development of a mathematical model to describe the unsteady-state process of batch ball-mill grinding. The influence of certain assumptions relative to model structure are quantitatively evaluated and reviewed.

Study results are presented in which gaseous oxygen was dissolved in the leach liquor at concentrations of the order of 300 ppm. This oxygen-containing solution was injected into portions of a field being operated on a commercial basis with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Comparative results indicate that uranium concentrations and production rates were essentially equivalent with these two oxidants.
